How to Teach /s/ Using Sound Shaping From /t/

speech therapy words ending in ts

This method works great for trying to establish an /s/ for the first time when a child has some kind of substitution error, meaning they make another consonant sound any time they should be making the /s/, such as a “th” (“thitherth” for “scissors”) or /t/ (“toup” for “soup”). When kids have substitution errors, you often have to trick them into making the sound correctly a few times before you tell them what you’re working on, and this technique works perfectly for that. It’s also great when the error includes some sort of mistake in placement for /s/, because the trick works by the same place features shared by /s/ and /t/.

What you need:

A child who can make a /t/ sound

The Process:

Cue the child to produce their /t/ sound and praise them for it. You can do this by having them imitate a /t/ a couple of times. Tell them you like how they’re keeping their tongue behind their top teeth.

Next, ask the child to make the /t/ sound again, only this time push the air out longer. When a speaker does this, they effectively make a “ts” sound. Model this for the child by doing it yourself a few times. In order to get praised for doing this successfully, you want to see that the child is keeping their tongue tip up behind their upper teeth and that the airflow is sustained longer than a /t/ sound, even if just for a tiny bit to start.

If it is, say “great job! Do that again!” Have the child repeat this sound a few times. Then ask them if they can make a REALLY long /t/ sound. Model producing a “ts” sound and hold out the /s/ sound while providing an additional cue about the duration of the sound. This cue can be running your finger from your elbow down to your hand, or along the side of a piece of paper. Anything to help illustrate that this is a /t/ sound that takes a looong time to make. Have the child produce this really long /t/ sound.

At this point, the sustained, long sound they’re making should sound like an /s/. Reinforce this great long /t/ by praising the child, then have them repeat a bunch of times, maybe 5 to 10 times in a row, until it seems to be pretty easy for them to do it. If they’re successful, great!

Then you can let them in on the secret—“hey, doesn’t this long /t/ sound remind you of /s/? Let’s try a few words” And see if they can still produce the sound correctly in some short words that end with “ts” like “eats,” “it’s,” “meets,” “let’s” and so on. We call this a facilitating context because the fact that the word has a /t/ followed by an /s/ means that a child who has learned to make an /s/ by shaping from a /t/ typically finds these words easy to produce. Don’t be surprised if the first time you try the word they go right back to the error pattern. In that case, break it down and go through the long /t/ process again. More repetition leads to more automaticity, and through many repetitions, the muscle memory for the sound becomes ingrained and allows the child to have more success when trying to “over-ride” the old error motor pattern.

If they’re successful with the /ts/ words, you can expand and work on more of these. Then, after a few days in a row of practicing final “ts,” see if you can introduce some words that start with /s/. We can use the same facilitating context trick for bridging to the new word position. For example, if /s/ at the start of words feels hard, try to use some facilitating phrases “let’s see,” “eats some,” “meets Sam,” etc. Then, after practicing these phrases, see if you can slowly drop out the first word. For example, practice “let’s see,” then “see.” Next, say “eats some” then “some.” Sometimes I’ve had success telling kids to “think about /t/” but not actually produce it before the /s/. This way you can move from the /ts/ before they become over-reliant on it.

How To Say T

To say “T,” put the tip of your tongue behind your teeth. This spot is called the alveolar ridge or the “bumpy” spot.

  • Tell your child to put his/her tongue behind his/her teeth.
  • The concept of “behind” can be tricky to grasp. If so, try to put peanut butter or yogurt on the “bumpy spot” to have him/her feel where his/her tongue should go.

Articulation Games For T

85 Final ST Words for Speech Therapy (Word Blends Lists)

Are you a speech therapist or parent looking for final ST words for speech therapy to practice with your child or student? Then this blog is just what you need! It has a word list of 85 final ST words that will help strengthen your child or student’s /st/ sound.

In my speech therapy sessions, I’ve seen that mastering consonants in final positions, especially sounds like “ST” is a common challenge for many individuals. As speech-language pathologists, we recognize the importance of addressing these specific speech difficulties. Final “ST” words require precise coordination of the tongue, lips, and breath. Improper articulation may lead to misunderstandings and can hinder effective communication.

In speech therapy, various intervention techniques are employed to help individuals produce these sounds correctly and consistently. These techniques involve strategic exercises, engaging activities, and sometimes, the use of technology to maintain motivation and track progress.

In this post, we will cover the importance of final consonants, as well as effective therapeutic strategies, activities and materials to use when practicing final ST in your speech therapy sessions.

To make your planning easier, we have provided 25 final ST Flashcards, as well as a word list of 20 common final ST words at the word, phrase and sentence level!

Key Takeaways

  • Understanding the correct articulation of final “ST” words to enhance clarity of speech.
  • A range of strategies and activities to help individuals practice and generalize the “ST” sound.
  • Materials and resources to ensure the transfer of correct “ST” articulation from therapy sessions to daily communication.

Understanding Final Consonants

The importance of final consonants in the English speech is a crucial component for clear articulation and proper language development. Let’s explore the specifics of this.

Phonological Processes

Phonological processes are patterns of sound errors that children use when learning to speak. One common process is the phonological process of final consonant deletion, where a child might omit the final sounds of words. This is a natural part of speech development but can persist as a phonological disorder if not corrected by a certain age.

  • Normal age for outgrowing final consonant deletion: by 3-4 years
  • Impact on understanding: can lead to misunderstandings if persists

Articulation of Final Sounds

Proper articulation of final sounds, particularly in consonant clusters, is key to clear speech. These clusters occur when two or more consonants are positioned together at the end of a word.

  • Complexity increases with more consonants: “past” vs. “pests”
  • Common final consonants: /t/, /k/, /n/, /m/, /s/

To master these, children must learn to coordinate a complex series of movements that may require speech therapy, especially if these sounds are persistently omitted or substituted as with consonant cluster reduction.

Impact on Language Development

Final consonants and sounds play significant roles in the morphological makeup of English. Failure to pronounce final sounds correctly can lead to deficits in both expressive and receptive language abilities.

  • Example of Expressive impact: “cat” may be misheard as “cap”
  • Receptive challenges: Difficulty in distinguishing between words like “hide” and “high”

Mastering these sounds ensures that our language development progresses normally and allows for the clear communication of complex ideas and tenses, such as pluralization or past tense.

Effective Speech Therapy Strategies

In our practice, we focus on concise, targeted interventions that address the specific challenges of each individual. Our strategies are designed to enhance language skills through consistent speech therapy sessions.

Using Minimal Pairs

Utilizing minimal pairs is a core part of our therapy. These are pairs of words where only the final consonant differs, highlighting the distinction between sounds.

  • mist / miss

Children practice these pairs, learning to differentiate and correctly produce the final consonant sounds.

Incorporating Phonological Approaches

Our phonological approaches, like the cycles approach, are structured and sequential.

  • Identify phonological patterns.
  • Target one pattern at a time.

This approach rotates through patterns to ensure all necessary skills are covered without overwhelming the child.

Targeting Final Consonant Sounds

When we work on final consonant sounds, we emphasize accuracy and clarity. We create a word list of target words that feature a variety of final consonants. For example:

  • List: nest, fast, test, dust, lost
  • Drills: We practice these ST final position words in repetition to build muscle memory.

Speech- language pathologists use effective techniques when targeting final ST articulation practice. Flashcards are a great way to drill and practice ST articulation. To make your speech therapy sessions easier, we have created 25 Final ST flashcards to practice ST articulation at word level, phrase level and sentence level.

Supporting a range of learners.

In speech therapy, we recognize that students of varying ages and abilities require tailored approaches to learning, especially when mastering final “ST” words. This is why we focus on creating adaptable strategies for young children and specialized considerations for those in special education to ensure effective learning and skill development.

Adaptations for Younger Students

For younger students, early intervention using simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words that end in “ST” is key to building phonemic awareness. It’s imperative we provide:

  • Visual aids : Using colorful pictures and flashcards can help to associate the sound with common objects.
  • Repetition and consistency : Repeating words such as “nest,” “rest,” or “best” in various playful contexts reinforces their learning.

Occupational therapy may parallel our efforts by involving sensorimotor activities that enhance the kinesthetic learning of speech sounds. This multidisciplinary approach often benefits young children immensely.

Considerations for Special Education

Students within special education often face unique challenges when it comes to speech development. Our goal is to:

  • Assess and address individual needs : Identify specific areas of difficulty with speech sounds and customize our strategies to meet these needs.
  • Use multi-sensory techniques : Integrating sight, sound, and touch to learn final “ST” words can significantly aid in the retention and articulation for these learners.

By always considering the individual learner’s needs and strengths, we cultivate an inclusive learning environment that supports all students in their journey towards clearer speech.

T Reading Paragraphs

Terry's taco house.

Growing up in Texas can be hot in the summertime. Our family likes to get milkshakes to cool off. Tonight our family is going to get Texas toast, tacos, and milkshake's at "Terry's Taco House".

My dad came home from work last night and said he was craving a taco from Terry's. It is the most terrific taco place in town.

Everyone will get a taco except for my sister Tia, she will probably get a hamburger. Don't get me wrong, Terry's makes good hamburgers, but their tacos taste much better in my opinion. Tia just isn't a big taco fan.

Most of the time she would rather find an exit than eat a taco. But when she wants a taco, she gets really excited about it. She is like my dad. Dad doesn't want to eat tacos very often. But when he does, move out of his way because he will run faster than a cheetah to get a taco.

When we go to Terry's tonight, I will find us a table by the window. Terry's restaurant sits right next to a busy street and I like to watch different things that happen while we eat our tacos. I've watched people change their car tires, drive with towels on top of their car, and find a turtle in the grass.

I always look forward to being together with my family and eating at Terry's. It is fun.

Teaching Dreams

When I get older I want to be a teacher. It has to be the coolest job in the world. The trouble is that I want to teach every subject. There are so many things to teach about and I don't think schools will let teachers teach about everything.

So far my list of things I want to teach about include: Jupiter and planets, writing fairy tales, growing potatoes and tomatoes, playing tennis, boat safety, and working in a hospital. Last week our class learned about alligators - this made me want to teach about animals. Then this week, I have learned about tools and building and that makes me want to teach about construction.

My mom also asked me if I would like to learn to play the guitar a few days ago.

"Of course I do. I want to learn everything so I can teach anything," I said. I tell my parents about how cool teaching is all the time. They won't tell me, but I think they get tired hearing about all of the different things I want to teach about.

They tell me I should definitely become a teacher if I love it so much. My plan is to teach high school classes in six different subject areas. I am starting to prepare now by learning as much as I can. I read a ton. I do a lot of interviewing too. Asking people what they do has taught me so much about things I can teach.

Teacher Trouble

We had my teacher over for dinner on Saturday night. My mom said it was because we needed to make her our friend. But it was quite the disaster. Not quite as frightening as a tornado, but pretty close.

I took her coat and hat at the door and timidly showed her into the dining room to meet my dad, Tom. He stood up so quickly that he knocked his calculator and notebook off his lap and onto the carpet. He shook her hand and said, "Well now aren't you as pretty as a parrot. I'm sure my son is as bad as two - no ten, tigers in your classroom." And at that, I started choking on the peanuts I had taken from my pocket and stuffed in my mouth so I wouldn't have to talk.

I ran to the bathroom as quick as a cheetah and spit the peanuts into the tub. I was trying to wash them down with water, but I was still choking. There were tears in my eyes and my tummy started to turn. I turned around and spit the rest of the peanuts into the toilet. I quickly used some toothpaste to brush up and a tissue to wipe my face. I returned to the dining room and took my seat. Then the rest of the disaster happened.

My mom served tortillas filled with turkey, potatoes, lettuce, and butter. My teacher ate them with her tongue half-way out. I don't think she liked them. And for dessert we had what my mom calls, fruit tacos - fruit in a hard tortilla shell topped with tangerine syrup and fried in butter. They were actually pretty good. But on the last bite, my teacher turned green, swayed a little and fell on the floor.

We called the hospital and they came and got her. I took her coat and hat and laid them on top of her as they wheeled her out on a stretcher. I did not want anything left behind to remember this awful night when we had my teacher over for dinner.

This list of functional words was professionally selected to be the most useful for a child or adult who has difficulty with producing the "T" sound.

We encourage you to use this list when practicing at home.

Doing home practice will help your child make much faster progress toward correct production.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are only able to see students/clients 30-60 mins (or less) per week.

This is not enough time  for your child to overcome an articulation disorder with the "T" sound. But with high caseloads...

...it's all SLPs can do.

There's  only so much time  in the day.

Every day that your child goes without practice  it becomes more and more difficult  to correct an "T" error because he/she continues to say it incorrectly.

Initial S and Final S Words for Speech Therapy

Need initial s words speech therapy lists? If you’re a speech-language pathologist looking for a quick list of initial s words and final s target words to practice during speech therapy, make sure to bookmark this post. You’ll also find some great ideas for making therapy more fun with a variety of engaging games, resources, and speech therapy activities for teaching the s sound. Not only does this blog post provide a list of initial and final s words, but it also suggests a variety of strategies for teaching correct placement. SLPs will be able to have a list of words on hand to easily use in the therapy room.

s sound articulation word lists

Correct Production of S

This blog post focuses on the correct production of s, but the production of z can be mentioned in this section as well.

A lot of time, s and z are speech sounds that a speech therapist will need to target during articulation practice. The s sound is a lingua-alveolar fricative sound. It is a voiceless sound, meaning the vocal folds do not vibrate. The z sound is voiced. The soft palate is raised during both s and z production. S and z can be made with the “tongue tip up” or the “tongue tip down”.

The lateral sides of the tongue need to be elevated and touch the sides of the upper top teeth (the upper molars). This allows for sagittal grooving of the tongue.

The middle of the tongue creates a funnel for airflow. The tongue tip lowers just slightly to create a channel to let the airflow pass through. This takes a lot of practice and coordination!

The jaw is in a high position, but it shifts forward slightly during the production of s.

The airstream moves forward and out of the mouth. The airstream continues while the tongue remains in place.

Common S Sound Errors

Children with articulation disorders may demonstrate a frontal lisp or lateral lisp when trying to produce /s/ or /z/.

An interdental lisp can be more common in young children. In fact, it can be developmentally appropriate while children are young. When your student is demonstrating an interdental lisp, the tongue is forward and protruding past the front teeth. The result is a “th” in place of the “s” sound (example: “thun” for “sun”).

When a child is demonstrating a lateral lisp , the tip of the tongue may be lifted, but the sides of the tongue are flat. When the sides of the tongue don’t lift, it results in the air flowing freely into the cheeks and mixing with saliva. Hilda Fisher described this as a “slushy L”. It is important to note that a lateral lisp is never developmentally appropriate. Learn about the straw technique for a lateral lisp .

Learn more about the different types of lisps here (which may include an interdental lisp, addental lisp, lateral lisp, palatal lisp, or strident lisp).

A few phonological processes may result in s or z speech sound production errors. A child may demonstrate the phonological process of stopping if he or she has a phonological disorder. When this occurs, the airstream is “stopped”. An example of this might be saying “tail” for “sail” or “do” for “zoo”. A speech pathologist may find minimal pairs to be a helpful tool when the phonological process of stopping occurs. Initial consonant deletion or final consonant deletion of the s sound may also occur.

How To Teach the S Sound in Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy Suggestions

Learning how to say the s sound can be hard work for many people. Students in articulation therapy must learn how to move and place the tongue correctly. The next step includes learning how to control and maintain the airflow steam.

Teach Normal Lingual Resting Posture

A lot of times, a great way to start is by explaining the normal lingual resting posture of the tongue and articulators. The tongue tip needs to rest near the alveolar ridge. The body of the tongue needs to be up and lightly suctioned to the roof of the mouth. This is the starting point for speech. I love to use a typodont to provide a visual for this. I use my hand raised into an arch to demonstrate how the center of the tongue needs to be lifted instead of flat.

A simple way to figure out if your student has normal lingual resting posture is to ask them! This is especially beneficial for children in the upper elementary school years.

I ask, “When you aren’t talking… where is the tip of your tongue?” Many of my students who have interdental lisps tell me their tongue tip is touching the front teeth at rest.

Teach the Long T

It may be helpful to teach your student a “ long t” . This is a sneaky way to produce the s sound by shaping it from the /t/ sound. Your student will say /t/, then carefully add airflow to elicit an /s/ sound.

After your student can say a long t, it can also be helpful to then focus on /ts/ at the final positions of words. For example, you might practice words like “cats” and “hats”.

Read more ideas for correcting a lisp here .

Decrease Stopping of S Words (Speech Therapy)

If a speech therapy student is stopping , a speech pathologist might it beneficial to use minimal pairs . An example of this might be practicing picture cards with “Sue” vs “two”.

If I am practicing the s sound in a target word, I keep it simple at first. This may mean practicing the s sound in simple syllables . Words like “see” and “say” may be useful targets. Following this, a speech therapist could choose simple CVC target words, like “sip”. After a while, these words may be practiced in simple phrases or short sentences.

More General Tips for Eliciting the S Sound in Speech Therapy

Speech pathologists may benefit by having the child  keep the jaw in an elevated position .

Finally, speech therapists may want to address letter-sound knowledge while teaching articulation.

Speech Sound Word Lists for the S Sound

The following word lists contain words with the initial s sound, medial s sound, and final s sound. These  articulation word lists  allow the SLP to easily work on a target sound in speech therapy. Quickly pull these word lists up during your speech therapy session and pair them with the game or activity of your choice. These lists make it easy to practice this sound at the word level! SLPs could also use these lists for auditory bombardment listening activities.

Speech Therapy Activities for the S Sound

A school speech therapist has a busy schedule and needs effective activities to use in therapy. These initial s and final s articulation cards are very effective for children who have speech sound disorders. For each articulation sound, a  speech sound mouth placement visual is provided. These articulation cards are also easy to send home for home practice. Family members can easily review the articulation s words as a carryover activity. To assemble, simply print out the cards, laminate them, then cut them out. Assemble them together using a binder ring for easy storage.

Here is another fun articulation activity to try! Your students can create manicures using play dough, magnetic chips, or dry erase markers. Have fun practicing target speech sounds while creating a manicure. This is the secret to making articulation drill fun! If you are a speech therapist working with students in person, then simply print and laminate the cards. Or, try using an annotate button with students to use this material during distance learning!

Finally, these minimal pair no prep worksheets will definitely become a staple in your speech therapy room! The minimal pair visuals used help reinforce contrasts between target speech sounds. Use these stopping minimal pair activity sheets to decrease the phonological process of stopping. These no prep phonology pages feature a simple layout to help the speech session run smoothly. According to one SLP reviewer, “This is a handy resource to have on hand with a great variety of targets. It’s easy to get so many trials with the targets immediately accessible for your target. The instructions for use are also clear and easy to implement.”

Some other simple articulation drill ideas for teaching the s sound might include:

  • play articulation tic tac toe
  • place articulation cards in a sensory bin
  • build “s” sound snakes out of play dough
  • go on an s sound scavenger hunt at school
  • hide articulation cards in a fun bin or container
  • fingerpaint a “snake” while practicing the s sound in isolation
  • do a simple “sink or float” experiment to practice the word “sink”

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
