How to Cite a Thesis/Dissertation in Chicago/Turabian

Academic theses and dissertations can be a good source of information when writing your own paper. They are usually accessed via a university’s database or a third party database, or found on the web. The main difference between a thesis and a dissertation is the degree type they are submitted for:

• Thesis—A document submitted to earn a degree, such as a master’s degree, at a university.
• Dissertation—A document submitted to earn an advanced degree, such as a doctorate, at a university.

This guide will show you how to create notes-bibliography style citations for theses and dissertations in a variety of formats using the 17th edition of the  Chicago Manual of Style.

Citing an Unpublished Thesis or Dissertation

In rare cases, you may need to cite a thesis or dissertation that has not yet been published. This is particularly the case if you want to cite your own work or the work of a colleague.

1. First name Last name, “Title” (unpublished manuscript, Month Day, Year last modified), format.

Citing a published thesis, citing an unpublished thesis, citing a thesis in online database or repository.

• CMS 14.224: Theses and dissertations

Titles of unpublished works appear in "quotation marks"—not in italics . This treatment extends to theses and dissertations, which are otherwise cited like books.

The kind of thesis, the academic institution, and the date follow the title. Like the publication data of a book, these are enclosed in parentheses in a note but not in a bibliography.

If the document was consulted online, include a URL or, for documents retrieved from a commercial database, give the name of the database and, in parentheses, any identification number supplied or recommended by the database.

How to Cite a Thesis or Dissertation in Chicago Author–Date Referencing

Want to reference someone else’s thesis or dissertation in your own work ? This can be useful if you are working on an unusual topic where little research has been published or when you know someone who wrote their final master’s or PhD piece on the same topic you are studying.

As with any source, though, you’ll need to cite it properly. Check out our guide to find out how this works in Chicago author–date referencing.

How to Format In-text Citations

In author–date Chicago referencing , you cite a thesis or dissertation by giving the author’s surname and the date of completion in brackets. For instance, we could cite a source by “Carter” from 2001 like this:

Citing your sources is very important (Carter 2001).

If you’re quoting a thesis or dissertation, meanwhile, you should include the page number in your citation:

Place quotes “within quote marks” (Carter 2001, 65).

You will then give the full source information in your reference list.

Reference List Entry for a Thesis or Dissertation

In the reference list at the end of your paper, the basic format for a thesis or dissertation is:

Author Surname, First Name. Year of completion. “Title.” Type of paper, academic institution, year of completion. URL/database ID (if applicable).

If you’ve only referred to an abstract rather than a full dissertation or thesis, meanwhile, you can simply add this detail after the title:

Bibliography:

Thesis and dissertation can mean different things, depending on which institution the work is from.

At Auckland University of Technology (and other NZ universities):

• Thesis is used either for a doctoral or a master's degree.
• Dissertation is used either for a master's or a bachelor's degree with honours.
• Exegesis is the written component of a practice-based thesis where the major output is a creative work;  e.g. a film, artwork, novel.

In some other parts of the world, such as the United States, a dissertation may be used for a doctoral degree and a thesis   used for a master's degree. You can use the same citation pattern, no matter what the type of thesis is called.

List the type of thesis as it appears on the title page, but abbreviate dissertation as diss .

How to cite a master's thesis in Chicago

To cite a master's thesis in a reference entry in Chicago style 17th edition include the following elements:

• Author(s) of the thesis: Give first the last name, then the name as presented in the source (e. g. Watson, John). For two authors, reverse only the first name, followed by ‘and’ and the second name in normal order (e. g. Watson, John, and John Watson). For more than seven authors, list the first seven names followed by et al.
• Title of the thesis: Give the title in quotation marks.
• Degree: Type of degree.
• University: Give the name of the institution.
• Year of publication: Give the year of publication as presented in the source.

Here is the basic format for a reference list entry of a master's thesis in Chicago style 17th edition:

Author(s) of the thesis . " Title of the thesis ." Degree , University , Year of publication .

For books consulted online, include a URL or the name of the database in the reference list entry. For other types of e-books, name the format. If no fixed page numbers are available, cite a section title or a chapter or other number in the text, if any (or simply omit).

Journal article

In the reference list, include the page range for the whole article. In the text, cite specific page numbers. Who has the lowest car insurance rates in New Jersey? See new MarketWatch Guides list

It's no secret that car insurance rates have been on the rise.

In New Jersey, according to MarketWatch Guides, more than 20 companies raised rates by double-digits since January of 2023.

Nationwide, the company says that the consumer price index for  motor vehicle insurance increased 38.7%  from the beginning of 2020 to the start of 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

And everyone is feeling the squeeze.

MarketWatch Guides set out to find the cheapest car insurance rates across the country, from companies that still provide what they deem quality coverage and service. They dived into 130 providers and ranked them on 8,500 data points.

Here's what they found.

Cheapest car insurance in New Jersey

Overall, MarketWatch Guides says Geico takes the crown in New Jersey.

It shows up with the cheapest rate of $1,472 for full coverage and $633 for minimum liability coverage. The rate was determined by ascertaining the cost for a 2022 Toyota Camry driven by a single 35-year-old with a good credit history and clean driving record.

MarketWatch Guides also points out that USAA offers the cheapest rates in many states, but they did not include it in rankings since it is only available to members of the military community.

How to get the lowest car insurance rate

MarketWatch Guides also provided some ways to ensure that you are getting the lowest rate for your car insurance. Laws by state may vary and limit the availability of some options.

Those include:

• Using a  car insurance calculator
• Comparing local providers
• Getting a quote after improving your driving record and credit
• Including pay-per-mile insurance as an option (if you’re not driving your vehicle a lot,  mileage-based auto insurance  can be an option)
• Considering telematics car insurance, which determine your rate by your driving
• Looking for companies with discounts you qualify for

Common discounts include military, homeowner, good student, safe car, good driver, defensive driving courses, multi-policy or multi-vehicle, paperless and pay-in-full.

How to lower car insurance rate

If available from your provider, MarketWatch Guides says you also can work to lower your car insurance rate by:

• Paying your premium annually or biannually
• Improving your driver profile by taking a safe driver course
• Improving your credit score
• Driving a vehicle that costs less to insure
• Increasing your deductible
• Opting for less coverage

MarketWatch guides also ranked car insurance providers by cheapest medium and large companies, cheapest insurance for young drivers, senior citizens and high-risk drivers, like those who have a DUI, accident or multiple speeding tickets, the cheapest liability-only coverage, the cheapest coverage for those with poor credit, and other categories. Chicago fire season 12 episode 11 review: inside man.

After a handful of lukewarm episodes so far this season, Chicago Fire has finally delivered the heat we've been missing.

It's been a while since we've been this invested in an hour of TV, but Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 11 was intense and kept us on the edge of our seats.

We also finally got a taste of the Stellaride vibes we've been missing for so long!

We got a much-needed look into our favorite characters who haven't been given much emotional content to work with this season.

Stella's reaction to Severide's situation reminded us that these two actually do share more than a locker room. The rest of the crew showed how much they cared about Kelly, too.

One of the resounding themes from " The Wrong Guy " was the mystery surrounding two of Chicago Fire's newest characters: Jack Damon and Lyla Novak.

Yes, we've confirmed that her name is Lyla, thanks to a reader and some backup on Google!

The pair shared a moment of camaraderie during "Inside Man" as Damon panicked about being accused of being involved with Severide's disappearance. Novak reassured him that he shouldn't take it personally and that everyone was just freaked out.

It's hard to know if Damon is sincere. He seemed to totally come unglued at the thought that the others didn't trust him. But still, something is off.

On that note, Novak is almost as new as Damon is. Why didn't the cops question her, too? Ritter's tip about Damon is what triggered the suspicion, but it would have made sense to bring Novak in for an interview, too. We still don't know anything about her, really.

She even joked about it. Could there be something more beneath the surface of that quip?

Hopefully, the rest of this short season will have some answers for us about these newcomers. With a lot of heavy-hitting cast changes, Chicago Fire has had its share of shakeups, so it'll be interesting to see if these two become staples.

It's no secret that I love a good firefighter show. Chicago Fire, 9-1-1 , Station 19 — the thing these all have in common is how well the writers turn the team into a family.

The members of 51 are an actual family in some cases, of course, but even outside of the occasional coworker-turned-spouse or stepson-turned-employee scenario, the folks in this house have a real bond.

When any kind of tragedy strikes, they're there for each other. Because of that, the team's reaction to Severide being in danger wasn't a shock.

But it was a comforting reminder that the characters we know and love haven't disappeared despite some rocky developments so far in Season 12.

At times, it's been hard to tell where they stand with each other. The soapy nature of Chicago Fire can put relationships at risk of seeming shallow, and we've seen the writing veer into that territory recently.

Thankfully, it seems like we're getting back on track. I'm not saying the show's writers read my complaints about Stellaride cooling off and did something about it, but whatever the reason, the heat was back in this episode.

We saw the Stella we've always known her to be — passionate, dedicated, and even a little bit short-fused and explosive — and it happened because she was worried about her husband.

Her fear forced her into action, and she didn't care what risks she might be taking as long as it led her to Kelly .

When the two were finally reunited, it was all hugs and kisses (and later, once they were home alone, a little implied woo-hoo).

Like I've said before, no one needs a graphic sex scene to believe in a couple. The subtle glimpses we got into their love for one another did the trick to make me a Stellaride shipper once more.

Aside from all the drama and suspense, there was another little piece of magic between characters that was a joy to witness.

Once everything had been resolved, Cruz confided in Hermann that Chloe had asked for marriage counseling. Hermann's response was so encouraging and kind that it really made me feel all warm and gooey inside.

Something I don't think we talk about enough is the fact that this show nails the concept of wholesome masculinity. In the scene with Cruz and Hermann, we witnessed a conversation between two men about a vulnerable topic, and it was full of gentleness and care.

We don't often get to see examples of wholesome masculinity like that.

Someone usually has to crack a joke or do something "manly" to break up the tension from the vulnerability. But not here; Hermann was just open and understanding and willing to meet Cruz where he was to offer advice. We love to see it.

There were some folks missing (again) from this episode. Mouch and Boden are still away, and there is no word on when they're expected to come back.

Given the news that dropped about Eamonn Walker stepping back from the show , it looks like we've got an explanation for why Chief Boden hasn't been around. Here's hoping that Mouch isn't following a similar path.

This was really enjoyable to watch, and I just hope that the rest of the season follows suit.

The College’s new dean, Melina Hale, PhD ’98, brings leadership experience and unlimited intellectual curiosity to a crucial role.

Melina Hale wanted to study primates. The daughter of teachers turned travel agents, she had watched giant tortoises in the Galapagos Islands and gorillas in Rwanda. Throughout high school she had immersed herself in a volunteer position at the Museum of Science in Boston as a “junior curator” of live animals, including rescued or confiscated alligators, owls, kinkajous, and more that were part of the museum’s educational programs.

Dreaming of a career studying animal behavior, Hale, PhD’98, applied early to Duke University, with its famed lemur center. By the following fall, she was spending much of her time there, observing the animals, taking notes, looking for patterns.

In spring semester Hale enrolled in a small seminar taught by biologist Steven Vogel. He had recently published Life’s Devices: The Physical World of Animals and Plants (Princeton University Press, 1989), a lively meditation on the ways physical laws influence the mechanical design of plants and animals. “The questions of concern here are enormously diverse,” Vogel writes in the preface, “ranging from why trees so rarely fall over and the significance of the hull shape of baby sea turtles to the relative scarcity among organisms of right angles, metals, and wheels.” It goes on in this casually curious manner. Rutgers University doctoral student gives birth on same day she defends dissertation

NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey -- This Mother's Day will be especially poignant for a New Jersey woman who will not only celebrate being a mom, but also becoming a doctor.

Tamiah Brevard-Rodriguez was working on her doctoral dissertation presentation from Rutgers University when she went into labor on March 25.

She was only eight months pregnant and was scheduled to deliver her dissertation defense that day.

"I was physically prepared for a pregnancy, mentally my brain was not on a baby," she said. "So I was having a very emotional response to knowing I was in labor, knowing I had this defense. I was literally shaking."

She had everything planned out with staff and faculty at Rutgers to examine standards Black women face on historically white college campuses.

But things went off schedule when her water broke. Brevard-Rodriguez's wife rushed to their car after their doula told them to get moving as contractions increased.

The drive to the hospital was a race against time.

"The doula is trying to tell me don't grunt him out, just breathe and I'm like 'this baby is coming,'" Brevard-Rodriguez said.

At that point, her wife, Alyza Brevard-Rodriguez, said she was probably driving 120 mph on the highway.

"I had three pushes, so the first one was baby's head was crowning, second push he was out, third one we were just there," Brevard-Rodriguez said.

Once at the hospital, baby Enzo was checked out and all was well.

But since Tamiah was well-rehearsed for the dissertation, she delivered her defense about seven hours after Enzo came into the world.

"I was like, I think I could do it. I was prepared for it, what did I do, some final touches on it and I did the study," she said.

She said all she needed was a nap, a shower and to regroup.

No one knew about the delivery until after the successful defense was complete.

Brevard-Rodriguez will graduate on Sunday, which is also Mother's Day.
