What our users think about us

Gökhan

I have been a member of INOMICS community for over 8 years. I came across the platform when I was looking for a summer school in Europe to prepare myself for my Master’s studies, so I decided to give it a shot. As soon as I found my summer course on INOMICS (which I enjoyed a lot), I started to explore the website more and realized that I can also use it for finding great PhD programs, academic jobs, conferences and professional courses. I think it is the most complete source of information for students or career seekers in the field of economics. Gökhan, PhD Student in Economics at Ankara University

Carolina

INOMICS has been very useful to me! I mainly use it to find conferences and fellowships, and I find it is the most complete source out there. I also know that I will be using it to find job postings at the end of this year when I go to the job market! Carolina, PhD Student in International Economics at Brandeis University

The Ph.D. Program in the Department of Economics at Harvard is addressed to students of high promise who wish to prepare themselves in teaching and research in academia or for responsible positions in government, research organizations, or business enterprises. Students are expected to devote themselves full-time to their programs of study.

The program prepares students for productive and stimulating careers as economists. Courses and seminars offered by the department foster an intellectually active and stimulating environment. Each week, the department sponsors more than 15 different seminars on such topics as environmental economics, economic growth and development, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics, industrial organization, law and economics, behavioral economics, labor economics, and economic history. Top scholars from both domestic and international communities are often invited speakers at the seminars.  The Harvard community outside of the department functions as a strong and diverse resource. Students in the department are free to pursue research interests with scholars throughout the University. Faculty of the Harvard Law School, Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Business School, for example, are available to students for consultation, instruction, and research guidance. As a member of the Harvard community, students in the department can register for courses in the various schools and have access to the enormous library resources available through the University. There are over 90 separate library units at Harvard, with the total collections of books and pamphlets numbering over 13 million.  Both the department and the wider University draw some of the brightest students from around the world, which makes for a student body that is culturally diverse and likely unequaled in the range of intellectual interests of its members. These factors combine to add an important dimension to the educational process. Students are able to learn from one another, collaborate on research projects and publications, and form bonds that are not broken by distance once the degree is completed and professional responsibilities lead them in different directions.

Economics PhD

Becoming an Economist

With a PhD in economics, you can choose to become a college professor or work at the Federal Reserve, international agencies, consulting firms, private banks, or other for-profit ventures. Learn more about the economics profession here .

If you are interested in earning a PhD in economics, talk to your academic advisor early in your career. Competitive applicants have strong grades in their intermediate economics and advanced mathematics courses (see Choosing Electives guide for details), as well as research experience. For additional advice, read the following resources:

  • Masayuki Kudamatsu’s  Tips 4 Economists  links to a wide range of excellent resources with tips for applying to graduate school (and beyond).
  • Professor Wong's advice for those thinking about a PhD in economics or other quantitative social sciences
  • Former Oxy Professor Slavov's tips for applying to PhD Programs in economics
  • American Economic Association's resources for preparing for graduate school

You may also want to consider attending one of several summer programs for aspiring PhD Students. These programs are designed to help you prepare for graduate school, to connect you with peers and mentors, and to help you decide if graduate school is right for you. These programs include:

The AEA Summer Training Program & Scholarship Program . This 8-week intensive residential program "prepares talented undergraduates from under-represented groups for doctoral programs in Economics and related disciplines." The application deadline is often in January.

The Becker Friedman Institute Summer Institute . This 3-week program aims to increase the diversity of the economics profession by attracting “extraordinary students from colleges and universities around the country who would not otherwise consider studying economics — and to get them excited about this important area of study through exposure to some of the most innovative faculty in the field.” This program is ideal for college students early in their undergraduate educations. The application typically opens in December.

PREDOC is a consortium of universities and research institutions providing a pathway into PhDs in the social sciences. In addition to running a summer program, PREDOC also acts as a clearinghouse for research and job opportunities.

Note that most students do not begin PhD programs in economics directly after their undergraduate career. Instead, students often develop their skills (and learn if a PhD is the right choice for them) by first working as an economics research assistant or analyst, or by participating in a one-year pre-doctoral master's program designed to enrich students' quantitative skills. Common pre-doctoral opportunities include:

  • Economic Consulting Firms: Analysis Group, Bates White, Brattle Group, Charles River Associates, Compass Lexecon, Cornerstone Research, EconOne, Edgeworth Economics, NERA, Quant Economics
  • Policy Organizations: RAND Corporation, The Brookings Institution, International Monetary Fund, Peterson Institute for International Economics
  • Federal Reserve Board and Regional Banks
  • Research Assistant Positions:  Many academic economists hire pre-doctoral researchers for full time employment. Available jobs are posted on the NBER Jobs site  and on the Econ RA Twitter Feed .
  • One-year Master's in Economics: University of Wisconsin, University of Texas at Austin, Duke University, Tufts University, UCLA, Washington University, and Vanderbilt University

Cutting graduate route an ‘economic own goal’, warn businesses

Universities losing income from international students would have to slash their r&d spending, letter to chancellor warns.

Cutting the graduate visa route would have a serious impact on UK research and innovation and damage the wider economy, business and university leaders have warned.

Ahead of the publication of a pivotal Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) report into the UK’s post-study work visa, 17 leaders from Chambers of Commerce and business networks from across the UK have written to the chancellor to warn against watering it down or scrapping it altogether .

It is the  latest attempt by the sector to exert influence  over the government on what has become a crunch issue, with protecting the visa widely seen as one of the only ways of averting further financial turmoil in the sector.

The letter,  coordinated by the University Alliance group of universities, has also been signed by leaders from the Russell Group and Universities UK.

It argues that if the government were to place any restrictions on the graduate visa route, it would have a “serious impact upon R&D capacity and return on government investment, besides causing damage to the wider economy”.

The higher education sector is the second largest investor in research in the UK, spending £5.6 billion on research in 2021.

The letter argues that because most of this investment is generated by tuition fee income from overseas recruitment, fewer international students in the UK will mean reduced investment in R&D.

Vivienne Stern, chief executive of Universities UK, said the UK seems “intent on dismantling” all the benefits that international students bring to the country, and warned that any changes to the graduate route will inevitably mean a decline in the UK’s research power.

“Universities of all shapes and sizes will need to make difficult choices about where to invest diminishing resources,” added Ms Stern. “This will mean further cuts to staffing, courses and research investment.”

“The business community and the higher education sector alike are worried about this because we know what it means: a crushing blow to our local economies.”

The letter cites data collated by IDP Connect that indicates that if the graduate route were removed, 45 per cent of international students would study elsewhere.

Jane Harrington, vice-chancellor of the University of Greenwich and chair of University Alliance, said restricting the graduate route would make UK universities less globally competitive.

“The government would need to find ways of covering the significant losses to research funding and wider export income caused by declining international student numbers. “This would be an extraordinary economic own goal.”

Kentucky No. 2 in economic development regionally, No. 8 in nation

phd economics jobs

Gov. Andy Beshear highlighted yet another recognition of Kentucky’s economic success.

“Kentucky has placed strongly in this and other recent rankings for economic growth, and that showcases what we already know: The commonwealth is the best place to do business,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “These rankings highlight the success we have had statewide and the major investment and job creation projects the state continues to attract. We still have work to do to meet our goals, but our efforts are gaining recognition at the national and international level. That success is due to the tremendous work of everyone who is a part of Team Kentucky.”

The Prosperity Cup recognizes the competitiveness of state-level economic development agencies and their success in landing capital investment projects according to data from 2023. It includes new and expanded facilities, total capital investment, new jobs created, corporate real estate rankings, state tax climate and the number of National Career Readiness Certificates per capita.

These rankings follow the announcement of 180 private-sector new-location and expansion projects in 2023.

Those projects totaled over $4.6 billion in announced investments and more than 8,500 jobs. Among the announced projects:

  • North American Stainless, which in January announced a $244 million expansion to its Ghent facility, creating 70 new full-time jobs in the Carroll County area.
  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, which in May committed to retaining 700 full-time Kentucky jobs and investing $591 million to establish the company’s first U.S.-assembled battery electric vehicle in Georgetown.
  • Toyota Boshoku America, which in October celebrated the announcement of the company’s new $225 million “smart plant” in Hopkinsville, a project creating 157 new quality jobs for Kentuckians.
  • Stellar Snacks, which in October announced the largest economic development project in West Louisville in over 20 years, a $137 million investment creating 350 full-time Kentucky jobs at the new pretzel manufacturing facility.
  • INFAC North America, which in June broke ground on a $53 million expansion of its automotive-related manufacturing facility in Campbellsville, creating 220 Kentucky jobs.

Earlier this year, the publication announced Kentucky’s strong placement in Site Selection magazine’s 2023 Governor’s Cup  rankings, coming in third nationally in economic projects per capita and first in the South Central region. The commonwealth also secured the second spot in the South Central region for overall projects, building on the previous year’s strong rankings. Kentucky has placed in the top 3 nationally and atop the South Central region in the per capita rankings each year of the administration.

Canada to introduce new rules around off-campus work hours for international students

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

International students enrich Canada’s social, cultural and economic fabric. That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Students Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

April 29, 2024—Ottawa— International students enrich Canada’s social, cultural and economic fabric. That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Student Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today that the temporary policy allowing students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus will come to an end on April 30, 2024, and it will not be extended. This fall, we intend to change the number of hours students may work off campus per week to 24 hours.

Students who come to Canada must be here to study. As such, allowing students to work up to 24 hours per week will ensure they focus primarily on their studies, while having the option to work, if necessary.

As we head into the summer session, students who have a scheduled academic break can continue working unlimited hours.

In developing this change, we looked at the needs of students, policies in other countries, as well as research that has shown that academic outcomes suffer the more a student works while studying. It also strikes the appropriate balance so students have the option to work without compromising academic outcomes. More details will be shared in due course.

We also continue to develop the new Recognized Institutions Framework to reward postsecondary institutions that set high standards for selecting, supporting and retaining international students. We will continue to support and protect international students from financial vulnerability and keep protecting the integrity of the International Student Program.

“Working off campus helps international students gain work experience and offset some of their expenses. As international students arrive in Canada, we want them to be prepared for life here and have the support they need to succeed. However, first and foremost, people coming to Canada as students must be here to study, not work. We will continue working to protect the integrity of our student program.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Recent studies conducted in the US and Canada have shown that there is a considerable decline in academic performance for students working more than 28 hours per week, and that working more than 24 hours per week increases the chances that a student will drop out of their program.

Most countries that welcome international students set limits on the number of hours they may work while they study. Australia recently changed its policy to allow a student to work 48 hours every 2 weeks. In the US, students must meet additional criteria before being permitted to work off campus at all.

In December 2023, the Government of Canada raised the cost-of-living threshold that students must meet to be approved for a study permit so they are financially prepared for life in Canada and are not as dependent on working.

International students who begin a college program delivered through a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement on or after May 15, 2024, will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit when they graduate. Those who already started this type of program prior to May 15, 2024, will still be able to access a post-graduation work permit, provided they meet all other criteria .

The new letter of acceptance (LOA) verification process has been a success. Since its launch on December 1, 2023, through April 1, 2024, IRCC has

  •  received almost 162,000 LOAs for verification
  • confirmed nearly 142,000 LOAs as valid directly with designated learning institutions (DLIs)
  • identified almost 9,000 LOAs that didn’t match any LOA issued by a DLI or that the DLI had already cancelled before the foreign national applied for a study permit

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
