"If I chose to do a master's program, I don't believe I would have had as many opportunities, and master's-level clinicians tend to not make as much as doctorate-level clinicians/providers."

"I chose a Psy.D. program as opposed to a Ph.D. as my program really emphasizes putting what we learn in classes to practice in our practicum sites. I also did not want to attend a program so heavily focused on research."

LaGuardia Community College Partners With CUNY School of Professional Studies to Launch Online Psychology Academy

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (April 23, 2024) —   LaGuardia Community College/CUNY  is among the six CUNY community colleges partnering with the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) to provide associate-degree holders who majored in psychology or a related field with a seamless pathway to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

According to the  announcement issued by CUNY SPS , “This innovative collaboration, known as the Online Psychology Academy, will allow eligible graduates from the schools to be admitted into the CUNY SPS online BA in Psychology program without completing a transfer application. Additionally, even before students register, the Online Psychology Academy will ensure prospective students have an easy and supportive transition to CUNY SPS by inviting them to partake in a selection of engaging departmental programs and events.”

“Psychology is a top 10 college major nationwide and now, because of the SPS Online Psychology Academy, LaGuardia students will be able to earn their Bachelor’s degree entirely online in a nationally recognized and highly ranked program,” said Billie Gastic Rosado, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “We expect this to make a big difference for adult learners, parents, and working students, in particular, who will find the flexibility of an online degree program exactly what they need to fulfill their dreams of earning their degree without missing a step.”

In addition to LaGuardia, the other colleges partnering with CUNY SPS are Borough of Manhattan Community College; Guttman Community College; Hostos Community College; Kingsborough Community College; and Queensborough Community College. On April 19 the CUNY Central office hosted a signing ceremony where leaders from each school met to celebrate the launch of the Online Psychology Academy.

Under the terms of the Online Psychology Academy agreement, eligible associate-degree graduates from the six community colleges who have majored in psychology or a related field will qualify automatically for admission into the CUNY SPS BA in Psychology program, and will be awarded up to 60 transfer credits towards the bachelor’s degree based on the current (Fall 2023) Psychology curriculum. To qualify, graduates must have maintained a minimum overall GPA of 2.5, be in good academic standing, and have a minimum grade of C or better in psychology and other courses as designated by their School. Graduates who meet these requirements will not need to complete a transfer application, but instead respond to outreach from the CUNY SPS Psychology program and Admissions Office indicating their intent to attend the following semester.

The  CUNY SPS BA in Psychology  online degree program focuses on the scientific study of the human mind and behavior. As part of their studies, students select one of three tracks for their advanced coursework: Organizational Psychology, Psychological Development, or Psychopathology. Through these tracks, students also gain a solid foundation in research methodology, motivation, learning, social behavior, and development that they can apply toward a variety of careers, as well as graduate work in psychology and related fields.

Recognized continually for its quality, affordability, and accessibility, the CUNY SPS online BA in Psychology program has been ranked #8 in the nation on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Online Bachelor’s in Psychology programs for 2024, among many other accolades.

Graduate Diploma of Psychology

The Graduate Diploma of Psychology is designed for students new to psychology or those looking to build foundational knowledge. This course is a pathway to practising as a psychologist or applying psychology skills in various fields.

• Duration : Minimum 16 months part-time
• Prerequisites : Australian bachelor's degree in any discipline or relevant professional experience or successful completion of a Graduate Certificate of Psychology.
• Outcomes : Provides a foundational understanding of psychological science; pathway to becoming a professional psychologist; applicable skills in education, HR, marketing and human services.

Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced)

The Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced) is tailored for those who have completed an APAC-accredited undergraduate psychology degree or equivalent. This course leads towards registration as a provisional psychologist in Australia. Provisional psychologists can begin supervised practice while they pursue a higher degree.

• Prerequisites : APAC-accredited three-year bachelor's degree with a major in Psychology or an APAC-accredited Graduate Diploma in Psychology; minimum WAM of 70 per cent in one of these course
• Outcomes : Fulfils the educational requirements for provisional registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia; applicable in various human-centred fields like education, HR, marketing, human services and healthcare. Prepares you to continue your postgraduate studies with a higher education degree in Psychology or take the 5+1 pathway to becoming a fully registered psychologist.

About the program.

Format : In person on the Statesboro Campus Credit Hours : 69 Entry Terms : Fall, Spring

Georgia Southern University’s School Psychology Program is nationally recognized and NASP-approved. Students attending our program receive a well-rounded education of face-to-face and online courses as well as field-based training via projects in schools beginning early in the program. This program will provide you with training to serve children and adolescents with learning, behavioral, or emotional problems in educational settings. After successful completion of 69 credits for the Ed.S. degree, you are prepared to be a licensed/certified school psychologist in any state. Professional entry-level in the field of School Psychology in Georgia requires Professional Level Six (S-6) Certification which you are eligible for after successful completion of the prescribed Ed.S. Program of Study and a passing the GACE examination in School Psychology. Graduates who choose to practice in other states must review the state’s specific requirements and required exam scores for licensure/certification.

Throughout this program, you will receive practical instruction that will culminate in a yearlong, full-time internship as a school psychologist. The program will provide you the preparation and field experience required to deliver the highest quality comprehensive school psychological services.

• Complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or in education from a regionally accredited institution.
• Present a cumulative 3.00 (4.0 scale) or higher GPA on all undergraduate and graduate work (if any) combined.
• Submit three letters of recommendation from persons well acquainted with the applicants academic and/or professional performance.
• Participate in an interview on-campus or by phone if notified.
• Complete “Disclosure and Affirmation questions” that address misconduct disclosure, criminal background check, the Code of Ethics for Educators, and tort liability insurance. Students who are accepted into the program must agree to abide by the ethical principles established by the National Association of School Psychologists. Documentation of professional liability insurance must be submitted to the assigned advisor at the beginning of the first semester.

Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional students must earn grades of ‘B’ or higher in their first nine (9) hours of course work after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regular status.

*International transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES accredited evaluation service  and must be a course by course evaluation and include a GPA. ( naces.org )
