Speaking of the bucket list, I want to marry jill, my fiancé. We have been planning our wedding since forever. A house in the suburbs, two beautiful kids, and peaceful life is what I want. To give my family complete attention, I have started investing my savings in multiple businesses. So, in the long term, I will not have to worry about supporting myself and my family. Among the four language skills, writing has always been the most challenging. Although it is clear to me what I want to say, somehow it does not translate to my writing. People tend to give a different interpretation of my writing, while at times people would come to me to clarify about what I was trying to say in my letter or written report. Despite my best efforts, I find that my writing tone, style, and at times, the use of punctuation, are the main problems in writing that hamper me from expressing myself effectively. Having identified my writing weaknesses, I plan to work on them the best I can. In order to improve my tone in writing, I plan to be mindful of my topic and stick with it from start to finish toavoid deviating from it. In the same manner, I will also try to avoid overemphasising on certain ideas as I find that I do this most of the time. I find that using straightforward language will help me boost my writing, so as trimming my sentences and using the right punctuations so as to to convey my message clearly. After looking at my writing skill, I have expanded my observation to takea good look around me and identify problems that I must have relegated at the back of my head due to some more pressing issues. One of these is the issue about pay. Althoug h the current wage for law enforcement officers like me is above average,the changing times have made it difficult for us to fulfill our financial needs and responsibilities. There are simply too many things, both in the needs and wants list, to financially address these days and what we are getting every month is making it impossible to do so. It is my hope, along with my colleagues, that the issue about pay raise will be addressed soon. Also, like most, if not all, police officers like me, I hope that promotion on the job will also be addressed accordingly in the near future. There is nothing more fulfilling in a job than being recognized and rewarded appropritately for all the hard work and dedication that one has put in.

Life can be very demanding and the things you have to deal with on a daily basis can have a huge impact on your energy levels and the achievement of your success . Each of these situations drains your reserves. Once you experience powerlessness, your brain “bookmarks” it and it is no surprise that it reappears again. To re-enforce this, you add convenient stories, such as, “I haven’t had the breaks”, or, “The times are just getting worse.”

What motivates you ?

Power needs to come from within you, however, it is important to understand that you are responsible for your own power alone. So, what gets you up in the morning and drives you every day ? This should be a question you ask yourself daily. What gives you the desire to do whatever it takes to succeed? Is it your drive for connection with others, growth as an individual, contribution, or how you will feel when you achieve your goals? It is important for all of us to know this so that we can approach our day with the total focus required for success.

Staying driven can be a challenge — your drive can be attacked by negative thoughts and anxiety about the future. Everyone faces doubt at some stage in their lives however, what separates the average performer from the highly successful is your ability to keep moving forward. Take a moment to imagine the single biggest thing that motivates you to succeed. When you create a plan, the likelihood that you will be successful skyrockets. Your plan will act as your roadmap to success. Once you’ve created a plan, you will know exactly what you need to do in order to be successful and how you’re going to do it.

If you don’t have a plan, you will be stumbling around working on tasks that don’t really matter, hoping to magically become successful. But success doesn’t happen by magic. It takes hard work — and with a little advance planning, you’ll be equipped with everything you need to begin that work.

Success comes to those who plan. Here’s how to start planning for all of your accomplishments.

Successful People are Planners

Success doesn’t come from luck. The most successful people didn’t just get lucky — they had a strategic success plan and then executed it. 

Whether you have business goals to accomplish or personal goals you want to tackle, achieving them starts with a well-written plan or process.

In addition to providing clarity on how to make progress, writing or planning ahead will make you feel more prepared as you face your goals head-on.

Simply put, if you have a plan, you have concrete next steps to follow. You aren’t just sitting around wondering how to be successful. Instead, you’re able to take action because your path is already laid out in front of you.

If you’ve ever written a book or an article, you might be familiar with this concept. If you sit down to write an article with no idea what you’re going to write about, chances are, the article won’t turn out well. You can write all day long — but if you didn’t have an outline to follow, your final article probably won’t make much sense. 

Planning for success is similar. You need a blueprint to help you move forward in the direction of your goals and dreams. And when you’ve taken the time to create that plan, you’ll know where you need to focus to see the biggest results .

People who accomplish goals at a higher rate are those who have developed an effective action plan . To create an action plan, you need to: 

• Decide exactly what you want
• Write your goal or goals down on paper
• Set a deadline for yourself
• Make a list of everything you can think of that you’ll have to do to achieve your goal
• Schedule everything into a comprehensive plan

This type of action plan is the best way to be successful in reaching your goals. But if it still sounds overwhelming, don’t worry! We’re going to dive into additional in-depth tips that will help you plan for success .

6 Steps to Plan For Success

You have the potential and ability to accomplish extraordinary things in your lifetime. In order to be successful in life , however, you need to follow a few key habits to help you create and execute your plan. 

Identify Time Wasters

The first thing you need to do to help you plan for success is to eliminate time wasters. Whether it’s the notifications dinging from your phone, the noise of the TV, your kids running around, or construction happening across the street, identify the time wasters and distractions in your life. Most likely, this step won’t take long — you’ll probably be able to easily zero in on the things that you spend time doing, but probably shouldn’t. 

While you might not need to eliminate these distractions completely, they need to go into their proper place. For instance, if you have kids, caring for them is an important part of your life. But you need to find the right balance of work and family time.

Make a list of the primary time wasters in your day or week. Then come up with a plan of attack for how to eliminate or minimize those distractions. Depending on the nature of your distractions, you might try:

• Putting your phone on airplane mode during certain times of the day
• Turning off the TV
• Getting a babysitter for your kids
• Working at a coffee shop or coworking space instead of your house
• Outsource low-value tasks (such as scheduling meetings or cleaning your house)
• Use automation where applicable

By identifying time wasters and taking steps to eliminate them, you’ll be able to be more successful and productive when needed.

Set Your Environment Up For Success

You may have already noticed how a messy space breeds distraction. If you’ve ever wasted precious time looking for that one document you know you have somewhere, or if you just don’t feel as productive when your office is cluttered, you aren’t alone.

There are science-backed reasons for how your physical environment affects your work.

Research has shown that clutter affects both your brain and your work. Our physical environments significantly influence our cognition, emotions, and behavior. What’s more, cluttered spaces can have negative effects on our stress and anxiety levels; our ability to focus; our eating choices; and our sleep. 

Whether your workspace is a room in your house, your office, or simply a table, you can take steps to clean and organize this space. There’s no need to completely redesign your office or deep clean your entire home. Instead, try a few of these easy, realistic tips to spruce up your workspace:

• Purchase (and use!) an easily accessible trash can
• Dust your desk on a regular basis
• Use drawer dividers to keep small office supplies organized
• Implement a filing system for papers, and shred documents you don’t need to keep
• Hide any cords, wires, or chargers that go with your devices
• Use a whiteboard or desk calendar to stay on track with appointments and meetings

Finally, tidy up your workspace each evening when you’re through working so you can start the next morning with a fresh slate.

Create SMART Goals

Setting SMART goals will greatly increase your chances of success. Your goals create the action plan you need, helping boost your productivity as you work toward success. 

So what exactly is a SMART goal? SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. The SMART acronym acts as a tool to help you ensure that the goals you create are geared to you and your means of success.

Here’s a further breakdown of this acronym and how it works:

• Specific — What do you want to do?
• Measurable — How will you track your progress?
• Achievable — How will you do it?
• Relevant — Is this relevant to your life right now?
• Time-bound — When do you want to do it?

As you plan out your SMART goals, write down each of these criteria and write a sentence or two about how your goal fits each. If you can create a goal that aligns with each element, your goal will be much more helpful to you in the long run.

Eat That Frog!

Are you familiar with the concept of “ eating the frog ”? This might sound strange, but here’s what it means. 

Mark Twain once said that if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that it is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long. 

To put this illustration into perspective, think of your “frog” as your biggest, most important task. It’s the one you are most likely to procrastinate on if you don’t do something about it. So “eat that frog” is another way of saying to do your biggest, hardest, and most important task first. 

This time management tip will help you unlock high levels of performance and productivity: Develop the lifelong habit of tackling your major task first thing each morning. Eating that frog before doing anything else is a common trait of successful people.

Create A Backup Plan

More often than we’d like, things don’t go the way we originally planned them. That’s why it’s important to have a backup plan — in other words, the steps you’ll take to achieve success if your initial plan doesn’t work out.

Maybe you have other goals you’d like to achieve in addition to the main goal you’re working toward. Consider setting one of these as your plan B. For example, perhaps you want to write a book and produce a documentary, and you’re focusing on the documentary right now. If the documentary doesn’t work out, you could switch gears and write a book instead.

Your backup plan doesn’t need to be very in-depth. In fact, it’s probably better that it isn’t: Research has shown that in some cases, having a backup plan can actually do more harm than good. But having a general idea of where else you could go will be extremely helpful if you do end up needing to pivot and try something else instead.

Stay Open-Minded

Sometimes life is unpredictable — and we can’t plan for the unpredictable. Even if you have a backup plan, the chaos of life might throw you for a loop. When this happens, it’s important that you have the flexibility and comfort to adjust your plans as needed. 

Some aspects of your life might be easier to plan or control than others. For instance, you may be able to count on your children’s school schedule, but be unable to control when your boss needs you in a meeting. Figure out which parts of your life right now are immovable and which ones are more flexible. Then do your best to fit in the tasks you can control around the ones you can’t.

When you’ve planned out certain elements of your life, it should be easier to manage the unplannable moments that occur. The key is striking a balance between control and flexibility — planning certain things and staying more flexible for others.

How to Plan For Success

Success takes hard work. And it also takes careful planning. The best way to plan for success is to eliminate time wasters; set your environment up for success; create SMART goals; eat that frog first thing every morning; have a backup plan; and be open-minded and flexible. By following these steps, you will have a much higher chance of achieving success — whatever that looks like for you.

10-Year Life Plan Essay

Planning ten years of my life seems like a kind of challenge now. We can’t predict what will happen to us after several months. However, I believe that great success is impossible without personal motivation and clearly defined goals. Thus, my life plan essay should start with a clear objective.

In ten years, I want to own an event company that can be the best in its field. I have always been fascinated with this idea. The following 10-year life plan essay will consist of three parts that can help me structure my future and achieve all my goals.

I would like to organize great performances at different events every day. Can you imagine a holiday that never ends? And this will be my work. I will make people happier. Now I need to plan all the steps to help me achieve my dream.

The first step of the way of my goal’s achievement is education. My education will be done at the University of Nevada, where I am planning to study hospitality management as a major and event management as a minor. I am sure of the importance of hard study for my future work. I need to get at least a 3.5 GPA. The multiple locations can help me gain a diversified background and extend my knowledge.

Therefore, I want to do some internship while studying. Perhaps, I will visit different countries to explore the modern tendencies of business start and its future development. Swope says: “I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: “Try to please everybody” (Swope).

Therefore, I am planning to get experience in different fields because I am sure of their future importance for my business. The examples of some international companies can help me understand how to make my business prosper. To extend my experience, I will start my practice during the study.

I think that education is very important. The lack of knowledge can lead to the business’s incapacity and collapse. Today, the diploma plays a significant role. It gives an appropriate status and respect. A man with a diploma looks more confident and, of course, qualified.

Accreditation provides much more opportunities in life. Therefore, I am planning to study hard and get as much knowledge as possible. I am sure that the university I chose can help me achieve my goals. My education will give me the base for my future business.

It is the most important part of the life plan, which should clarify the goal and approaches to its achievement. Nowadays, the leaders of all companies know the value of settings achievable and understandable goals. Such issues are called smart goals, which need to get better results. These smart ideas help me share my vision of the business with the possible assistants (“Life Planning”).

My attention is turned to the use of certain tools that may help my project. For instance, I need to identify and list all the barriers that may be between me and my goal. I shouldn’t be scared of possible problems because it is an integral part of my future success. Being realistic, I realize all the difficulties I should overcome.

In the beginning, I have to clarify who will be involved in my business. This can be a family company, or I can cooperate with a wide circle of partners. What results do I want to achieve? I want to own a successful company that will be famous around the country.

Choosing the place location, I prefer my native city because it will be easier to find clients and partners. Thinking about these questions, I can clearly understand all the important keys to my goal’s achievement. I will get so many opportunities, so I shouldn’t be lazy in its use (Ashton 8). This is why I think it is the most important period of my life.

My lifestyle should accomplish my educational and professional background and skills. I am planning to do a huge social work and to promote equality among people. I want to help everyone that I can. But I have to learn more from the closest one.

My business will be closely related to people from different communities. Therefore, matching my wants, I should be ready to keep my mind open to different cultural issues and views. I plan to visit many countries to learn about cultural features. This will help in my work with clients.

According to Bukofsky, even my religious and spiritual conditions are very important for my business (34). Family relations also play a huge role in the business success achievement. Life planning is a process that may lead a person to take a more active role and to think about the future. Thinking about my future, I imagine a family that will support me and give me more motivation.

I totally agree with Carlson that “self-actualization is the key to self-help” (9). Although no one can control all life’s events, it is better to try being over random chance and fate.

There is a difference between the person who goes to one’s goal and the man who can easily be influenced by random events. I will structure my life according to the daily plan. This will allow me to follow the main idea, which will lead to success. The life plan is a perfect method to figure out what is really important in life.

I have so many ideas and interests in different fields. I am fascinated by people who can concentrate on the most important idea and follow the plan. However, I should follow my own life plan for the future result. I agree with the statement of Barnett that people should discipline themselves. Following the main idea of life, it is possible to get better results and to make it fast (Barnett).

I have always been a goal-setter. Thereby, my Ten Year Plan is focused on achieving my high ideals and realistic goals. From time to time, it seems that goals are something that we strive to achieve but fail due to personal reasons or social barriers.

However, I am completely sure that a good life plan and motivation can lead to success in spite of all problems that may occur. My Ten Year Life Plan helps me to specify my goals and to see the key moments and the most important steps which can lead me to success.

In 1960, when my world turned upside down

After recently being hired as an engineer at the Sperry Gyroscope Company in Lake Success, I owned a new car for the first time. And there it was, my practically brand new 1959 Plymouth sedan, lying upside down on the shoulder of the Long Island Expressway.

My friend Charlie was there, camera in hand, saying, “Willy, you gotta do a handstand — it will make a great picture.” Then, two older women from streets adjoining the construction area walked over to ask if anybody had been hurt. When I said there were no injuries, one woman nodded knowingly and said, “Ah, they must have been good Catholics.” Well, not true.

Let’s turn back the calendar. It’s September 1960. The previous night, I had bought a bottle of vodka and planned to drink screwdrivers (orange juice and vodka) at a party in Forest Hills with my date, Jan.

However, unfamiliar with the effects of orange-flavored vodka, I became a “screwed driver” when we left the affair for our homes in Floral Park in my unseat-belted car. (Seat belts were not required then.)

Then it happened. While driving near the Grand Central Parkway exit, my eyes slowly closed, and my beautiful car hurtled up an immense pile of recently excavated earth (the LIE was still under construction). It rolled over in midair and came crashing down on the roof, the windshield shattering before my bloodshot and now wide-open eyes.

Jan and I were left lying upside down inside on the ceiling, amazingly unscathed. We crawled from the wreck, and soon the police arrived, requesting my license and registration. Unfortunately, my wallet was in the trunk, and when it was opened — it now opened down — my basketball also fell out and I had to chase it down the LIE. (It seemed important at the time.) I gave the police the requested documents, and they gave me a ticket for “Failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.”

Later that night, about 1 a.m., Jan and I got a ride home from a passerby. My car was left there, not blocking traffic and safely off the road, resting on its roof.

And now, not many hours after the accident, Charlie drove me back to the wreck and set about taking “the picture.” Ironically, lying near the car was a booklet that came with my vodka bottle: “How to Have a Vodka Party.”

A few days later, the car was junked, and although my car’s story ended, the picture’s story had just begun. I would periodically ask Charlie about it, and he’d say, “Yeah, I’ll find it one of these days.”

Eventually, I got married, had kids, and when they were grown, I told them of my misadventure and of the picture taken but never seen. After that, whenever my daughter, Bobbi, saw “Uncle Charlie,” she would ask about the picture, and he would tell her what he always told me, “Yeah, one of these days.”

Then at my son Stephen’s wedding reception in 1996, Charlie made a presentation — not to Stephen and his wife, Pamela — but to Bobbi, of a poster-size blowup of her father standing on his hands in front of his 1959 Plymouth resting on its roof.

The photo had been taken 36 years earlier, and I wasn’t sure it ever existed. But it did and now it hangs in my den, reminding me of that crazy night from the distant past.

Victoria's Free Kinder program has been running for a year, but a planned expansion has been delayed

Returning to Helm Street kindergarten feels like coming home for parents Aleisha Mackaway and Tyson Murphy, and their two daughters. 

Annalise, 6, and Lilliana, 8, both have autism and had behavioural issues before starting at the community-based kindergarten in central Victoria.

Lilliana was mostly non-verbal when she first started.

The family said it was an example of how kindergarten could change lives — both for the girls and their parents.

"Just watching the girls, how they developed over the years and how hard they worked to get them school ready … it nearly brings a tear to my eye," Mr Murphy said.

"Without [the staff], I would be an emotional and mental wreck," Ms Mackaway said.

But not everyone is happy with the Free Kinder program.

Expansion of Free Kinder delayed 

Free Kinder programs began in 2023 in most Victorian centres.

Under the scheme, the government provides 15 hours of four-year-old kinder a week, and 5-15 hours of three-year-old kinder a week.

That was supposed to increase to 30 hours a week for four-year-old kinder from 2026, but Victoria's state budget papers reveal this has now been delayed to 2036. 

Victoria is also in the process of building 50 new state government-owned and operated early learning centres.

But the budget reveals the construction of some of those centres has also been delayed, with the last 20 to be built by 2032. 

Premier Jacinta Allan has blamed the delay on workforce shortages. 

"We have a series of workforce shortages that are putting pressure on the delivery of these programs," she said.

"We have had to make a more gradual rollout of four-year-old kinder. 

"With this massive expansion of kindergarten, we need an extra 11,000 educators and teachers to deliver this." 

At Shinebright Helm Street in central Victoria, free kinder   has made a big difference for children from low socio-economic backgrounds.

"It's finally catching the children that have been missed and would have been missed," educator Beckie Parkinson said.

"The amount of families we have who call up and say, 'I'd like to do kinder, how much is it going to cost?' And we say it's free and they're blown away.

"We know without that relationship, children fall through the cracks, families fall through the cracks. This might be the first safe place they've ever really had."

Extra funding allowed educators at the Bendigo kindergarten to provide families with food relief, link them with health services and advocate for their children's needs.

Ms Mackaway remembers how hard staff fought to get her daughter Annalise into the dentist after she smashed her front teeth on a trampoline.

"They really pushed to get her on the waitlist to get her teeth removed. If it wasn't for them, we'd probably still be on the waitlist."

Kinder asks for toilet paper donations

But Free Kinder is causing problems as well as solving them.

Some Victorian council-run and community-based centres say it is financially unviable to operate under the new funding model, especially if enrolments drop.

They say the Free Kinder funding barely covers costs, and leaves them out of pocket for cleaning supplies, building maintenance, or expanding centres to fit the growing number of enrolments.

This has led to Melbourne councils Glen Eira and Knox's decision to close their kindergartens , while other councils, including Casey Council in the outer south-east, say they can't afford to expand their kinder programs to keep up with demand from the Free Kinder program.

In Melbourne's east, community-based sessional kindergarten in Bellevue has called for the state government to allow centres to charge parents a gap fee, so they can afford their program.

"We've had to make cuts to our finances so that we can pay wages, pay bills and buy the essentials," coordinator Carla Sutton said.

"We have to rely on parent donations. We're asking parents to donate toilet paper, boxes of tissue and paper." 

Ms Sutton said free kindergarten meant her centre gets $1,460 less per child, losing about $48,180 in fees.

"We've had to cut our cleaner down to three days a week to save $200 a week. It's actually quite embarrassing."

Ms Sutton said they had cut incursions and special programs like music, Italian, a petting zoo, and sport.

"I've never had to think twice about providing a quality program for children. Now it's, 'What are the children missing out on?'"

The state government said Free Kinder gave a sessional service about 30 to 40 per cent more funding compared to the average income from parent fees in 2022.

It said the small number of community-based session services that previously charged more were offered transitional support.

Early Learning Association of Australia (ELAA) chief executive Andrew Cameron said he was working with struggling centres to prevent closures.

"We'd like to make sure they're getting every support possible to meet their needs so they can continue to operate successfully."

Free Kinder a 'real success', peak body says

Mr Cameron described the Victorian government's reforms as "really positive and groundbreaking".

He said despite some issues, most children and families were benefiting from the Free Kinder funding model, and the high demand showed that.

"Most kindergartens are receiving higher levels of revenue to their services," Mr Cameron said.

"Free kinder has been a real success."

The state budget showed enrolments in government funded three and four-year-old kindergarten had increased to 146,900 children, up by 10,000 from the previous year.

Calls for 'rethink' on national kinder 

In Queensland, a Free Kinder subsidy for 15 hours for 40 weeks , or 600 hours, began this year.

Advocates said it disadvantaged low-income earners who still had high out-of-pocket childcare costs, while the Victorian model had significantly lowered costs for low-income parents. 

The NSW government's funded kindergarten scheme started in 2022, funding 15 hours per week in the two years before school.

With varying schemes around the country, Goodstart Early Learning has called for a national "rethink" to free kindergarten, to make it simple and fairer and to provide two years of 30 hours of early childhood education a week, at no cost to low-income families. 

The Productivity Commission will hand down its final report on a review of early childhood education in June.
