Konkani e-books
Konkani Folktales are the vehicles of value system of the community transmitted over generation to generations. There is an abundant wealth of life skills knowledge in it which are being transfered through oral narratives. World Konkani Centre strives for rejuvenation of folktale tradition which is fading away due to the modern lifestyle and societal structure.
World Konkani Centre has been working on technology to provide Konkani folktales in interactive eBook format since long. Here we begin with some eBooks and we will be adding more as and when we comes out with new. These eBooks are built with voice over and text highlighting. Presently eBooks are available in only a select few dialects. We aim to create these books in all Konkani dialects and scripts soon.
Please feel free to download and let us know your feedback so as we can constantly strive for better.

The Tribal Origin of Konkani Language
कोंकणी कोणाची? न्हय म्हजी, न्हय त ु जी. कोंकणी न्हय गोयं ची, गोयकारां ची कोंकणी आसा आदिवासीं ची (This article is based on paper " " The unsung linguistic subalterns in Goan history: the forgotten Konkani speaking Kukna and Gamit tribals of Pre-Portuguese Goa" presented in XVIII th loal history seminar , organized by Department of History, Goa University and directorate of archives and archaeology, Government of Goa, at Goa University on 6 th and 7 th March 2014) This paper challenges the popular and officially propagated myth of pre Portuguese Goa being projected as a the "mulpeeth" or centre of origin of Konkani language or proto Konkani language and puts forth the new hypothesis of tribal origin of Konkani language. It attempts to incorporate the definite contributions of Kukna and Gamit tribals, the original Konkani speaking inhabitants of Konkan as the true architects of the language. Interdisciplinary scientific efforts are advocated for rewriting the r...

Multilingualism in India has occupied the imagination of social scientists. Indian multilingualism is so proverbial that people often wonder how communication takes place. Continually emerging new powerful languages challenge the existing socio political order. As society and polity changes, the socio political status of a given language also change. The socio-political status of a language is not static it is liable to change as society and polity changes. This paper considers the dynamic relationship between Konkani language and society in Goa. Based on literature review and personal interviews with a number of language protagonists, this paper attempts to document the dynamic status of Konkani in pre Liberation Goa.

Data from four little-studied varieties of Indo-Aryan (Southern Palula, Northern Palula, Sawi and Kalkoti) spoken in the Hindu Kush is analyzed and discussed from a historical-comparative perspective. Evidence is presented showing that Kalkoti, until recently only tentatively classified, is part of this particular cluster of closely-related Shina varieties. An attempt is made at reconstructing some phonological and grammatical features of a common source speech, here named Proto-Dangari, and the order in which the present-day varieties may have split off. An important conclusion drawn is that Southern and Northern Palula probably are more distantly related than present-day similarities seem to indicate, the high degree of synchronic similarity instead being due to relatively recent convergence taking place in southern Chitral. It is hypothesized that the present speech communities are the result of two different westward routes of migration, one geographically linking Southern Palula (Ashreti) and Sawi with Chilas, the other linking Northern Palula (Biori) and Kalkoti with Tangir, both located in the same general area of the main Indus Valley.

The first half of the paper is an overview of various language families of South Asia, their location of speech, their strength, and their status as major and minor languages if any, with ample graphs, figures and maps. The subsequent parts of the paper focus on the languages of India. A historical account of each language family and their genesis has been discussed drawing research from historical and comparative linguistics as well as from population genetics. The latest research on the languages of Andaman and Nicobar has been presented for the first time. The issue of language vitality has been considered by drawing attention to the ever-increasing phenomena of endangerment of languages and language families. Language isolates are also mentioned briefly.

Among the overwhelming majority of linguists, the accepted model for the genetic affiliation of the Indic languages (Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Punjabi, Kashmiri, Gujarati, Bengali, etc.) is what can be called the Indo-European model. According to the Indo-European model, Indic languages are all descended from a single language that no longer exists (sometimes referred to as Proto-Indo-European), which is also the ancestor of the languages of Iran and most of the languages of Europe. In this paper I will offer a brief presentation of the assumptions underlying the Indo-European model and I examine two separate critical appraisals of it by the linguists Angela Marcantonio and Nikolay Trubetzkoy. I show that neither of their criticisms succeed in casting sufficient doubt on the Indo-European hypothesis, and neither offers an adequate explanation of the existing linguistic data. In the second half of the paper I shall draw a distinction between the hypothesis of a reconstructed Indo-European parent language, and the reconstruction of the culture and homeland of its original speakers. Acceptance of the hypothesis of the Indo-European model of language relationship need not entail acceptance of any single hypothesis about the prehistoric migrations of speakers of Indo-European languages or about their original culture.

Kodagu, a small district of Karnataka known as 'Kashmir of South India', is rich in natural resources in our multicultural country, India. A land that naturally experiences the intensity of all seasons. As "Hasirattal, Hasirittal, Hasirettal Kodaginali", this land which was covered with green bed has been caught in the trap of globalization-modernization and has also experienced some 'shock'. Despite its small geographical area, it has a special place in the map of India due to its distinct and unique culture, natural diversity, contribution to the country's defense sector and sports fields. River 'Kaveri' is not only the taproot of this district but also the lifeblood of Kodagu's identity.

Language and cultural shifts are the major causes of endangerment of any community, which begins from minor switching of practices and verbal repertoires and ends with a whole change of community, and finally culminates in the community losing its own identity. Language shift usually takes place in a bilingual or multilingual speech community. It is a social phenomenon, whereby one language replaces another in a given society due to underlying changes in the composition and aspirations of the society. This process transitions from speaking the old to the new language. This is not fully a structural change caused by the dynamics of the old language as a system. The new language is adopted as a result of contact with another language community. The term language shift excludes language change which can be seen as an evolution, and hence the transition from older to newer forms of the same language. Contact between two or more cultures often leads to different sociological processes such as acculturation, cultural change, cultural genocide, and cultural shift. Cultural shift occurs when a community gives up its own socio-cultural practices like customs, rituals and traditional beliefs, and is characterized by changes in cultural symbols, rules of behavior, social organizations, or value systems. It differs from the process of cultural change in which a community’s culture can evolve independently. Shifts may take place at the level of an individual speaker who gradually forgets or shifts to another language and consequently this language spreads to an entire community. This phenomenon can be seen among the Aranadans, a primitive tribal community found mainly in the Malappuram district and in other Northern districts such as Kasargode and Kannur of Kerala, owing to their irreverence towards the preservation of their own language and culture. The socio-ecological, psychological and educational factors impact their language and cultural shifts. This paper illustrates and clarifies the reasons for the language and cultural shifts of the Aranadan tribal community.
