Human resource management is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like management , operations management , project management , business , international business , MBA and more. That is why it is imperative to create a human resource management dissertation topic that is articular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.

This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best human resource management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Top 100 Human Resources Research Topics and Ideas

Table of Contents

Human Resources (HR) is a fascinating subject to study. Typically, this course covers a wide range of important topics including employee management, consistent ways to manage and lead a team, reviewing industry best practices, and much more. However, things get a little difficult for Human Resources Management (HRM) students, when they are required to generate some engaging human resources research topics. This is because the topics they choose should be distinctive and provide adequate scope for significant research and analysis.

Since many students experience difficulties with identifying an ideal topic for their HR research papers, in this blog, we have listed 100 outstanding HR research paper topics and titles as suggested by our experts. If you are wondering how to choose a good human resources research topic, then read this blog. Here, you will get amazing ideas for your HR research paper writing.

Understand How to Select a Human Resources Research Topic

Generally, the topic that you pick will play a significant role in the success of your research paper. So, when it comes to writing a human resources research paper, first, make sure to pick an ideal topic by following these steps.

Determine your area of interest

In the beginning, put some effort into identifying the human resources research area that you have strong knowledge and interest in. Working on a research topic from a passionate area or theme will help you conduct research with a lot of excitement and satisfaction. The HR research areas that you may consider are recruitment and selection, workplace compliance and safety, risk management, career development, etc.

Conduct a Preliminary Search and Gather Ideas

After finding out your field of interest, conduct a basic search and gather unique human resources research ideas. To collect research topics, you may read the latest credible materials such as magazines, journals, and published research papers that are relevant to the theme you have selected.

Narrow down the list

Once you have collected various human resources research titles, analyze them all and find out whether they have a good research scope and are feasible to complete the research process before the deadline. Never pick HR research topics that have limited or no research scope. Also, narrow down the list by ignoring the research topics that are already discussed and the ones with fewer sources for references.

Perform analysis

Analyze all the shortlisted research ideas and pick a topic that is unique, researchable, and contains a lot of sources and facts to prove a thesis statement. Most importantly, the topic that you give preference should match your university guidelines and align with your needs. Furthermore, the topic you select should allow you to achieve your goal.

Consult with your supervisor

Once you have selected a topic for your human resources research paper, discuss it with your supervisor and get their approval for the topic. By using their experience and subject knowledge, they will share some insights on whether the topic you have chosen will help you create wonders or not.

Human Resource Management and the Range of Research Paper Topics

Human Resource Management (HRM) is an interdisciplinary field that integrates aspects of management, psychology, sociology, economics, and legal studies. It is the art and science of managing people within an organization to maximize their performance, well-being, and alignment with strategic goals. As a broad and multifaceted domain, HRM opens doors to a wide array of research opportunities. This article will explore the essence of HRM, its historical evolution, theoretical frameworks, practical applications, and the myriad of research paper topics it offers.

Historical Background

The history of HRM can be traced back to the early 20th century, during the rise of the industrial revolution. The scientific management theory introduced by Frederick Taylor sought to apply scientific principles to worker productivity. As the business environment grew more complex, the Hawthorne studies emerged, highlighting the importance of social factors and human relations in the workplace. The evolution from personnel management to modern HRM reflects a shift from viewing employees as mere resources to recognizing them as valuable assets.

Theoretical Frameworks

HRM is underpinned by several key theories that guide practice:

  • Resource-Based View (RBV): Emphasizes the role of human resources as a competitive advantage.
  • Equity Theory: Focuses on fairness and justice in employee relations.
  • Expectancy Theory: Explains how employees are motivated by the expected outcomes of their actions.
  • Human Capital Theory: Regards employees as assets whose value can be enhanced through training and development.

These theories offer diverse perspectives for research, ranging from organizational behavior to strategic HRM.

Key Functions and Practices

The scope of HRM encompasses various functions that address the needs of both the organization and its employees:

  • Recruitment and Selection: Designing and implementing processes to attract and hire suitable candidates.
  • Training and Development: Enhancing employee skills and knowledge through continuous learning.
  • Performance Management: Assessing and managing employee performance to align with organizational goals.
  • Compensation and Benefits: Structuring pay and rewards to motivate and retain talent.
  • Labor Relations: Navigating the legal landscape and fostering healthy employee-employer relationships.

Contemporary Challenges

Modern HRM faces several challenges that provide fertile grounds for research:

  • Diversity and Inclusion: Creating a workforce that represents various backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives.
  • Technology and Automation: Leveraging technology to enhance HR processes while considering its impact on jobs.
  • Globalization: Managing HR practices across different cultures and jurisdictions.
  • Ethical Considerations: Balancing organizational needs with ethical treatment of employees.

Emerging Trends

The ever-changing business landscape leads to new trends in HRM:

  • Remote Work: The rise of virtual workplaces and the associated management challenges.
  • Well-Being and Mental Health: Prioritizing employee health and well-being as part of HR strategy.
  • Sustainability: Integrating social responsibility into HR practices.

Range of Research Paper Topics

The complexity and diversity of HRM lead to an abundance of research paper topics. Here are examples from different areas:

  • Strategic HRM: Examining the alignment of HR practices with business strategy.
  • Employee Engagement: Exploring factors that influence engagement and its impact on performance.
  • Legal Aspects of HRM: Investigating laws and regulations affecting HR practices.
  • Organizational Culture and Behavior: Analyzing the influence of culture on employee behavior and organizational success.

Human Resource Management is a vast and dynamic field that intertwines various disciplines, theories, practices, and challenges. From historical roots to contemporary issues, HRM offers a rich tapestry of research opportunities. Human Resources Dissertation Topics

Human Resources (HR) is an exciting topic that combines theories from both Business and Psychology. This is such a broad field of study, so there are literally thousands of titles you could choose from when formulating your dissertation.

This article will introduce you to some of the key topics in HR such as Training and Development, Performance Management, Diversity and Inclusion, or Strategic Human Resources Management. We’ll acquaint you with the key debates and hopefully inspire you to come up with an interesting topic of your own!

Strategic Human Resources Management Dissertations

Training and development of human resources dissertation topics, hrm as competitive advantage dissertation topics, intrinsic vs extrinsic rewards hrm dissertation topics, employee retention dissertation topics, appraisals and feedback dissertation topics, performance management hrm dissertation topics, diversity and inclusion dissertation topics.

The field of HR has evolved significantly over the past forty years; whereas staff were once seen as a resource that needed controlling, staff are now generally perceived as one of the primary assets of the company. Moreover, most companies now subscribe to the idea that HRM should be ‘strategic’. What is strategic HRM?

Well, it essentially means that the HR policies and practices should help drive the business forward and help it to achieve its corporate goals.

As a student of HRM, you may wish to focus on Strategic Human Resources Management for your dissertation since it is a highly topical area of study. If it appeals, here are some sample topics:

  • Should Human Resources Managers lead the interviewing process for Banking recruitment? A critical analysis.
  • What is the link between employee satisfaction of pay and benefits and organisational performance?
  • Does offering employees paid charity days increase their organisational citizenship behaviour?
  • Keeping employees informed about corporate goals and achievements: Risks and Benefits.
  • Strategic HRM in SMEs: a worthwhile investment?
  • Defining the HRM strategy – How is it achieved in practice?
  • Mismatches between corporate and HRM strategy: A case-study approach.
  • Strategising for success – designing effective recruitment and selection campaigns for Teacher Training programmes.
  • What are the benefits of outsourcing SHRM?
  • Does HR sit and fit on the board?
  • Strategising and monitoring the employee lifecycle in a high-turnover environment.

Recognition of the importance of Human Resources has increased in recent years; this is a result of competition from overseas economies. In Japan, Germany and Sweden, for example, investment in employee development is higher than in the UK. This has led to some organisations reviewing their policies on training, introducing continuous investment in their employees.

Below are some suggestions as to how to narrow your human resources dissertation topics on training and development down to a specific topic.

  • The efficacy of digital vs face-to-face training: Insights for a post-COVID world.
  • Unconscious bias training: Helpful or harmful?
  • Exploring the link between training and development, employee engagement and employee retention.
  • Examining the important role of feedback in training.
  • Are training and development linked to employee engagement in temporary or casual positions?
  • How do organisations survive economic crisis (from the training and development perspective)?
  • Does training and development really impact the bottom line?
  • What skills are needed for today’s turbulent climate?
  • Who trains the trainers?
  • Soft skills, who needs them? A case-study of IT professional services industry.
  • Training and development in the Gig Economy – a worthwhile investment?

The resource-based view argues that a strong HRM strategy can become a firm’s competitive advantage. In order for the HRM strategy to become a competitive advantage, it should be difficult for other firms to imitate. That said, your dissertation could focus on whether and how contemporary organisations are achieving a competitive advantage through their HRM strategies.

  • How to implement knowledge transfer in IT professional services environments.
  • Retaining high-value staff to ensure a competitive advantage: a case study approach.
  • Exploring Google’s Human Resources advantage – what lessons can be learned?
  • Fast, cheap labour – Are Gig Economy employees obtaining a competitive advantage through exploitation?
  • Implementing digital solutions to enhance HRM and organisational performance.
  • Patagonia’s HRM strategy – why is it so difficult to imitate?

According to common sense, pay is the primary motivator for employees; pay is referred to as an ‘extrinsic’ reward. However, there is a lot of research to suggest that ‘intrinsic factors’ motivate employees, too (e.g., flexible working, respect, autonomy, a good relationship with their manager, and a sense of purpose through their work). Some might even say that intrinsic motivators are more salient for employee motivation than ‘extrinsic factors’ (pay and traditional benefits). This is one of the broad debates in contemporary HRM research. If you are interested in this debate, here are some titles you might consider for your dissertation:

  • Motivating millennials – how important is pay and benefits?
  • Does spirituality moderate the link between reward preference (intrinsic vs extrinsic) and employee motivation?
  • What is the link between employee autonomy and employee motivation? A case study of administrative offices in the UK.
  • Does performance-related pay undermine teamwork?
  • Why do some people carry on working after a significant windfall whilst others do not? A qualitative, interview-based approach.
  • How important is flexible working for employee motivation? A comparison between pre-and-post COVID-19 attitudes.
  • How to help employees create meaning through their work: A case-study approach of the healthcare sector.
  • Are extrinsic rewards an effective motivator in the caring sectors?
  • Do any of the ‘Big 5’ personality traits moderate the link between reward preference (intrinsic vs extrinsic) and employee motivation?
  • Extrinsic rewards fit for the 21 st Century – Exploring UK workers’ attitudes and expectations towards extrinsic rewards.
  • Are there differences in motivation between (intrinsic vs extrinsic) between British and Chinese workers?

Retaining the best talent is a challenge for many organisations, especially those operating in an industry with a skills-shortage, like the technology sector. That said, exploring how to engage and retain the best talent is vital. Here are some topics to consider:

  • What is the link between staff training, employee engagement and employee retention?
  • Can mindfulness-based employee welfare programmes enhance employee retention in high-stress industries?
  • The link between employee learning and development and employee retention.
  • The challenge of talent retention in the UK technology sector – an exploratory approach.
  • Is employee retention always desirable? A critical approach.
  • Exploring HRMs’ attitudes towards employee retention strategies in the banking sector.

Appraisals have been a common way of tracking performance and setting goals for improvement, especially in the public sector. However, more recently, theorists are starting to doubt the efficacy of formal appraisals as these can cause unnecessary stress. Moreover, they can feel a bit robotic and impersonal. CIPD now recommends that managers provide regular and consistent feedback to employees in an informal basis (but in a respectful way). In cases where meetings and appraisals are still taking place, these tend to be more forward-focused than backward-looking. That said, you might be inspired by one of the following titles:

Pragmatic HRM Research and its Pedagogical Implications Provisionally Accepted

  • 1 University of Lincoln, United Kingdom
  • 2 Crandall University, Canada

The final, formatted version of the article will be published soon.

This chapter examines the interplay between human resource management theory and human resource management practice. It advocates that effective human resource management practice and theory are intrinsically intertwined and this indispensable link ought to be central to the pedagogy of management research methods. Through a greater embeddedness of the institutional and societal context in research method teaching, students can develop as scholars who understand their roles as facilitators of dialogue between researchers and a significant part of their audience (practitioners). The chapter conceptualizes this perspective as Collaborative Model in human resource management research, which then must hold centrality in the teaching of research methods in our university and college classrooms.

Democratizing design through AI

Lyle Regenwetter Hometown: Champaign, Illinois Advisor: Assistant Professor Faez Ahmed Interests: Food, climbing, skiing, soccer, tennis, cooking

Lyle Regenwetter finds excitement in the prospect of generative AI to "democratize" design and enable inexperienced designers to tackle complex design problems. His research explores new training methods through which generative AI models can be taught to implicitly obey design constraints and synthesize higher-performing designs. Knowing that prospective designers often have an intimate knowledge of the needs of users, but may otherwise lack the technical training to create solutions, Regenwetter also develops human-AI collaborative tools that allow AI models to interact and support designers in popular CAD software and real design problems.

Solving a whale of a problem

Loïcka Baille Hometown: L’Escale, France Advisor: Daniel Zitterbart Interests: Being outdoors — scuba diving, spelunking, or climbing. Sailing on the Charles River, martial arts classes, and playing volleyball

Loïcka Baille’s research focuses on developing remote sensing technologies to study and protect marine life. Her main project revolves around improving onboard whale detection technology to prevent vessel strikes, with a special focus on protecting North Atlantic right whales. Baille is also involved in an ongoing study of Emperor penguins. Her team visits Antarctica annually to tag penguins and gather data to enhance their understanding of penguin population dynamics and draw conclusions regarding the overall health of the ecosystem.

Water, water anywhere

Carlos Díaz-Marín Hometown: San José, Costa Rica Advisor: Professor Gang Chen | Former Advisor: Professor Evelyn Wang Interests: New England hiking, biking, and dancing

Carlos Díaz-Marín designs and synthesizes inexpensive salt-polymer materials that can capture large amounts of humidity from the air. He aims to change the way we generate potable water from the air, even in arid conditions. In addition to water generation, these salt-polymer materials can also be used as thermal batteries, capable of storing and reusing heat. Beyond the scientific applications, Díaz-Marín is excited to continue doing research that can have big social impacts, and that finds and explains new physical phenomena. As a LatinX person, Díaz-Marín is also driven to help increase diversity in STEM.

Scalable fabrication of nano-architected materials

Somayajulu Dhulipala Hometown: Hyderabad, India Advisor: Assistant Professor Carlos Portela Interests: Space exploration, taekwondo, meditation.

Somayajulu Dhulipala works on developing lightweight materials with tunable mechanical properties. He is currently working on methods for the scalable fabrication of nano-architected materials and predicting their mechanical properties. The ability to fine-tune the mechanical properties of specific materials brings versatility and adaptability, making these materials suitable for a wide range of applications across multiple industries. While the research applications are quite diverse, Dhulipala is passionate about making space habitable for humanity, a crucial step toward becoming a spacefaring civilization.

Ingestible health-care devices

Jimmy McRae Hometown: Woburn, Massachusetts Advisor: Associate Professor Giovani Traverso Interests: Anything basketball-related: playing, watching, going to games, organizing hometown tournaments

Jimmy McRae aims to drastically improve diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities through noninvasive health-care technologies. His research focuses on leveraging materials, mechanics, embedded systems, and microfabrication to develop novel ingestible electronic and mechatronic devices. This ranges from ingestible electroceutical capsules that modulate hunger-regulating hormones to devices capable of continuous ultralong monitoring and remotely triggerable actuations from within the stomach. The principles that guide McRae’s work to develop devices that function in extreme environments can be applied far beyond the gastrointestinal tract, with applications for outer space, the ocean, and more.

Class Acts: Sophia Hatzikos

hr research topics for masters

The sun goes down on a fall afternoon. A lone figure circles the remains of old experiments. She wears thick blue gloves. She is unperturbed by the howling wolves.

In her video performance “Circle At Dusk (Tyson Research Center, Eureka MO),” Sophia Hatzikos explores the complex relationships between natural and constructed systems and between scientific and artistic research practices. Hatzikos expects to earn in May a master’s degree of fine arts in visual art from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

“It’s important to me to spend time in a place,” she said. At Tyson, a 2,000-acre environmental field station that WashU maintains a half-hour southwest of St. Louis, “I would set up the camera and move through the landscape. I like the idea of leaving a light footprint. Everything I touched was with those blue gloves.”

Blue — the color of the sky, of the ocean, of melancholy — figures prominently in Hatzikos’ work. Other recent projects include a series of works created on the Aegean coast; an installation made from a discarded agricultural pool; and a large mosaic, inspired by the motion of water, at WashU’s Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum .

In this Q&A, Hatzikos, discusses her work, cross-disciplinary research and art in the time of climate change.

Before coming to WashU, you conducted interdisciplinary research and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and visual art. What drew you to that mix?

I like researching, I like learning, I like talking with people. I really loved the lab! It took me a long time to acknowledge and claim the title of artist — because that does feel like a choice. (Other disciplines) have procedures and expected ways of being. Art didn’t have rules like that. There isn’t just one way to present things. I tend to collaborate with people who are pushing their own fields. I think that’s where I’ve had the most success. Art is the way I like to research, but I’m still really interested in how economics shapes our decisions. I partnered with a biology professor who taught me how to make biomaterials with agar, pectin and collagen. I haven’t really said goodbye to any of them.

You won a Sam Fox School travel grant to the coastal town of Malaki, Greece. The resulting body of work includes an ocean performance documented by drone and trompe-l’oeil sculptures resembling sea urchins and discarded brick. What was your process like?

I researched by swimming! I swam for miles along the shoreline. The sea is an interesting place for waste … . There’s an amazing amount of detritus because disposal is so expensive. Not everything is a relic. You find refrigerators. I would dive and collect objects, which I’d then recreate and reinterpret from memory. I would love to be able to take a 3D scan and not remove anything from the site. I came to this realization that artifacts are too factual. I wanted to create a little fiction, a little lore.

What role can art play in addressing ecological crisis?

A lot of my practice is about embedding myself within physical environments. As environmental calamity increases, I think we’re going to face a lot of loss and a lot of sadness. We’re not going to have answers. The question of why something happens can’t always be met with data. But there’s something potent about approaching the ecological conversation from a personal lens. Sharing narratives, sharing stories, interacting with people along the way … I think those things are helpful. They remind us that there are many ways of being with nature.

A capstone project is one of the final tasks in business school.  Through the process, whether an international business or HRMBA capstone project, students demonstrate that they understand the principles of their field and can practically apply this information. Many business students, especially those in human resource management, choose to use their final project as an opportunity to learn more about a particular subcategory as well as boost their resume. Since there are so many different career paths for HRMBA graduates, a targeted capstone experience can help these students jumpstart their career after graduation. Some human resources management capstone project ideas include the following.

1. Human Resources Theory into Practice

For this project idea, students can examine a few different theories in human resources or just do an in-depth study on one and describe what the selected theories look like in the industry. Many times, these capstone projects include an element of experiential learning where the student spends time in a workplace to understand what the job is actually like. During this experience, the student then watches for specific techniques used by the human resource department. Then, at the capstone presentation, they can highlight which theories and techniques were used at the work site and the results and any recommendations based on human resources theory.

2. Effect of Increasing Training Budget

This project focuses on the degree to which employee training can affect profits. For this capstone idea, after choosing a specific workplace, a student can examine the current training methods and determine what changes would be effective. Based on the data collected and predictive modeling techniques, the student can calculate the tipping point, or at what point adding money to training no longer increases profits and how much is added up until that point.

3. Methods of Employee Performance Appraisal

Along with training, another aspect of human resources involves rating an employee’s performance in a variety of areas. Sometimes, this is based on definitive data, but other times, this involves quantifying less directly measurable skills. For this HRMBA capstone project idea, a student could explore ways of objectively scoring employee performance in these positions. Another aspect of this involves removing subjective bias during the interview process.

4. How Does the Human Resources Department Increase the Value of a Company?

This capstone idea focuses on the intrinsic value of a strong human resource department and how this affects different aspects of the company. Training methods, employee motivational programs, benefits selection, and recruitment processes all affect how employees view their workplace. Further, the student can describe how these also determine the opinions of other companies, potential applicants, and the general public.

5. How do Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Impact Organizational Performance and Innovation?

Increasing diversity at all levels of employment is becoming more important. According to Forbes , the field of human resources is changing, and one main aspect of this involves companies being open about the diversity of their staff or lack thereof. For this capstone HR  project, students demonstrate all the benefits of diversity in the workplace including the financial and cultural effects.

6. What Are the Key Factors that Contribute to Employee Turnover Within the Organization?

This capstone could be a research project looking at the top reasons for turnover within an organization.  While specific factors can vary based on the industry, several factors could be explored including:

  • Job dissatisfaction
  • Lack of career development
  • Poor leadership and management
  • Lack of recognition and reward
  • Work environment and relationships

If turnover is your area of interest, HRMBA students could partner with an organization to do an assessment and make recommendations.  Interviews or surveys could be conducted with management and former staff to learn more about their reason for leaving.  Recommendations could be made to the organization with ways they could reduce their turnover rate.

7.  What is the Relationship Between Employee Recognition Programs and Employee Morale and Retention?

Recognizing and appreciating employees’ efforts and achievements boosts their motivation and morale.  When employees feel valued and appreciated, they are more like to be engaged and productive.  But how do you know if your organization’s recognition program is effective?  A capstone studying an organization’s recognition program that includes interviews or surveys with staff would be of great value to an organization.  Some other HR project ideas in this area could consist of:

  • What are the key factors that influence employee retention within an organization?
  • What is the relationship between employee recognition and retention within the organization?
  • How effective are current employee retention efforts in reducing turnover rates?
  • What role does work-life balance play in employee retention?

8. How Does the Implementation of Flexible Work Arrangements Affect Employee Engagement and Work-Life Balance?

While flexible work arrangements existed before the COVID pandemic, there has been a 20% increase in companies who prioritize flexible scheduling since 2019.  After years of remote work, there is finally enough data to show that it works.  According to McKinsey’s American Opportunity Survey, 58% of Americans reported having the opportunity to work from home at least one day a week.  The survey also showed that 87% of workers accept a flexible work arrangement when it is offered.  Flexible work arrangements are a desirable feature for American workers.

Not every industry is structured to support work from home, so fortunately company leadership can choose from a variety of flexible work arrangements.  Here are some research questions that could provide some capstone project ideas .

  • What are the perceived advantages and disadvantages of flexible work arrangements from the perspective of both employees and employers?
  • What is the impact of flexible work arrangements on team collaboration, team building, and coordination?
  • How do different types of flexible work arrangements affect employee outcomes and organizational outcomes?

9.  How Does Leadership Style Impact Employee Motivation and Job Satisfaction in Organizations?

Human resources is a popular concentration within an MBA program.  MBA graduates are prepared for leadership roles within an organization, so their capstone experience must provide them with the opportunity to develop these leadership skills.  HR MBA capstone project ideas related to leadership style can be a journey of self-discovery.  Completing a capstone experience in an organization can help you identify leadership behaviors that drive employees to succeed.  By comparing the leadership styles within several different organizations, MBA HR students can begin to see which styles have a positive impact on an organization and which may be toxic.

At the end of most graduate programs, students need to display their mastery of the core competencies in their field. Completing a capstone project during an HRMBA program showcases a student’s knowledge and also allows students to focus on an area of human resources that is of particular interest to them.  We hope these capstone human resources /MBA ideas have been a helpful resource.
