Honors College
The Department of History invites students enrolled in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College to major in history and encourages current history majors to consider joining the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College.
Who joins the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College? History majors from all kinds of backgrounds have become members of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. You can read more about some of them below.
Why should you join the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College? There are many reasons to become a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. As part of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, you’ll graduate with honors, something very few University of Mississippi undergraduates can claim. There are also loads of additional perks. You’ll get the opportunity to take exclusive small courses with other honors students–history faculty, for instance, have recently offered honors courses on historical representations in videogames and the history of disease and epidemics in the United States. You’ll get priority registration. And you know that honors thesis you’re probably terrified to work on? It’s not all that different from the capstone research paper you’re going to need to write as a history major anyway!
Did you know you can join the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College even if you didn’t enter the College as a freshman? The Junior-Entry Program allows both transfer and current UM students to join the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. Through the Junior-Entry Program students will become involved in research in their majors, take Honors courses, and contribute to the larger society through community service.
Admission Requirements A minimum of a 3.50 undergraduate GPA Permission of the student’s major department At least 45 earned college credit hours
Honors College Requirements Successful completion of the Honors Capstone and Senior Thesis Successful completion of at least one other Honors course Successful completion of the Community Action Component while a member of the SMBHC
The Honors Capstone and Senior Thesis requirements encourage students either to develop their own scholarly interests or to become more involved with the research pursuits of University faculty. The completion of this independent work, particularly with the thesis, will set you apart from other university students. The most common experience for these two requirements is to do independent research with a faculty mentor in the junior year, and then write the results of that research as your thesis in the senior year. For more information on the capstone and thesis requirements, click here .
Participants in the Junior-Entry Program have 24-hour access to the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors Center, which houses a computer lab, lounge, kitchen, study rooms, and classrooms. With twenty-four hour access to the building, many students see the Honors Center as a place to socialize and as their “home away from home.” They also have the advantage of priority registration and have the option of living in honors housing.
Upon graduation, students who successfully complete the Junior-Entry Program will graduate as an Honors Scholar in his or her major (e.g. Honors Scholar in Biochemistry). The student will participate in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College commissioning ceremony, and the distinction of being an Honors Scholar will be noted on the student’s transcript.
The Junior-Entry Program is truly a rewarding experience. To apply, download the application . Or you can request a copy by calling 662-915-7294 or e-mailing honors@olemiss.edu. The application deadlines are the end of the first week of both the fall and spring semesters.
Want to hear more before you apply? Reach out to Professor Vivian Ibrahim (vibrahim@olemiss.edu) to learn more about what the Honors College can do for you and how to put together the best possible application. Once you’ve joined the Honors College, Professor Mikaëla Adams (mmadams@olemiss.edu) can help you network with other history majors in the Honors College and navigate the thesis-writing process.

Honors College Alumna Wins National Portz Scholarship
Genevieve verville's research could improve development, effectiveness of new drugs.
Genevieve Verville
OXFORD, Miss. – A recent graduate of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi has been awarded a prestigious scholarship from the National Collegiate Honors Council.
Genevieve Verville, a May 2020 chemistry graduate with minors in mathematics, biological sciences and psychology, has been named a 2020 NCHC Portz Scholar. The Montgomery, Alabama, native is one of four recipients nationwide and will present her honors thesis during the NCHC virtual conference, set for Nov. 4-8.
“I was thrilled to learn that other people outside of the University of Mississippi are interested in my research and I am excited to learn about the other Portz scholars’ research,” Verville said. “The general public would be interested in my research because the phenomenon known as the hydrophobic effect has many implications in developing new treatments for disease and in drug design and effectiveness.”
Dean Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez said Verville’s achievement reflects well on the college.
“We nominated Genevieve’s thesis over those of her 343 peers in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College given its depth and breadth,” he said. “The National Collegiate Honors Council chose three top theses, including Genevieve’s, over all the nominations submitted by the nation’s honors colleges and programs.
“Once again, our SMBHC scholars distinguish themselves not only on campus but in the nation with their scholastic commitment and pursuit of knowledge and understanding.”
The focus of Verville’s thesis was three organic molecules – called osmolytes – that are important to proteins. These molecules are trimethylamine N-oxide, known as TMAO; guanidinium; and urea.
Osmolytes play crucial roles in protecting cells against environmental stressors that can negatively affect them.
“The exact mechanisms by which TMAO stabilizes and both guanidinium and urea destabilize folded proteins and interact with each is still a mystery,” Verville said. “We used a technique called Raman spectroscopy to explore the interactions between the molecules of interest in water to better understand how they interact with each other and affect the adjacent networks of water.”
Beginning this fall, Verville plans to spend the next two years working as a post-baccalaureate research fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Following completion of her fellowship, she hopes to apply to doctoral programs to continue her education and research.
Nathan Hammer, the university’s Margaret McLean Coulter Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, served as adviser for Verville’s honors thesis.
“Genevieve is one of the finest honors students I have known in my 13-year tenure at Ole Miss,” said Hammer, who first met Verville when she enrolled in his lab as a freshman. “She first appeared as second author on a published paper that was featured on a journal cover in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B.”
Verville’s co-authorship on that first publication with Hammer stemmed from her taking over a project that involved studying TMAO’s interactions with urea and her making critical contributions that ensured its completion and success, Hammer said.
“At an early age, she (Verville) was operating on the level of a graduate student,” he said.
Verville’s thesis research is the basis of an upcoming article in the Journal of Raman Spectrometry on which she is first author. Hammer noted in his nomination letter for the Portz that “She developed her research plan on her own and I had complete confidence that she would succeed in seeing it through to a successful end.”
Verville said she thinks her thesis, titled “Raman Spectroscopic and Quantum Chemical Investigation of the Effects of Tri-Methylamine N-Oxide (TMAO) on Hydrated Urea, Hydrated Guanidinium, and Hydrogen Bonded Networks,” will be of interest to the other researchers because the nature of the interactions between the osmolytes continue to be debated.
The 55th annual NCHC conference was scheduled to be held in Dallas but was switched to a virtual format because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Croft Institute for International Studies and The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College
Most Croft students are also members of the Honors College. The two programs work closely together and have aligned many of their requirements, thus avoiding overlap and unnecessary duplication. For example, many Croft courses earn Honors College credit , while the Croft senior thesis does double duty as the Honors College senior thesis. Joining both Croft and Honors therefore does not mean taking on extra burdens. On the contrary, Croft and Honors perfectly complement each other.
Croft students do not have to be members of the Honors College. Croft students already have the most important advantages of the Honors College, such as smaller classes, individualized attention from faculty and advisers, a closely knit community of students, and special facilities, including dedicated computer labs and study spaces.
Membership in the Honors College adds to the special advantages of the Croft Institute. The Honors College provides access to additional opportunities, including scholarships, internships, eligibility for Barksdale Awards, and special faculty and staff resources.
