The website has a somewhat limited library compared to other sites on this list, but if you are looking for something out of the ordinary, you might find something on Movies Found Online.

Just be sure to keep your ad blocker on; Movies Found Online is prone to pop-ups here and there.

Popcornflix is a straightforward video streaming service to watch free movies online. It hosts tons of films, TV shows, and documentaries. The service has been around for nearly a decade now, but the library seems to have made a recent move towards B-movies. It features a well-organized directory to quickly peruse the various genres you are interested in, including new arrivals, foreign films, and even Popcornflix originals.

The Internet Archive is a little bit of an oddball in this list. Xumo is owned by Comcast, which also owns Peacock. Xumo has a number of older and more recent movies to watch, although most are not as high profile or have as high review scores as you can find on Peacock. However, Xumo does have a small number of exclusive films to watch.

Ever since the Australian government started cracking down on file-sharing websites and BitTorrent clients like Popcorn Time and Putlocker, streaming movies for free has become a tad trickier Down Under.

We’ve all used one of these sites in our most desperate moments. Maybe that movie you wanted to see before the internet spoiled it for you was delayed in Australia, or maybe you just don’t want to pay for  another  streaming service . Both valid reasons but it’s fair to say, we should be paying for our movies and TV shows where we can. It’s just that paying for it can prove difficult in Australia.

There are plenty of paid streaming services readily available in Australia (maybe too many) but far fewer opportunities to stream for free these days. Thankfully, the following services will allow you to stream an outstanding selection of TV shows and movies without any price barriers.

Best free movie streaming site in Australia

Tubi is a free-to-use streaming site that was purchased by Fox in early 2020. It was first launched in the US back in 2014 but only made its way to Aussie shores in late 2019. And, in case you were wondering, it is 100% legal to usel. Unlike most services’ subscription models, Tubi is 100% ad-supported. Here in Australia, giving Tubi a go won't cost you a thing.

Despite this, there aren’t quite as many ads as you might expect. According to Tubi’s support centre, their ad breaks are short (one to two minutes long) and only interrupt your stream every 15 minutes or so. To test it, we watched a movie and a couple of TV episodes and only experienced about half a dozen ads. That’s still nowhere near as many ads you’d have to sit through watching an episode of Masterchef.

Tubi’s no-cost admission is its biggest selling point but its massive library of movies is its second strongest draw. As you could probably guess, its catalogue of movies isn’t short of a few duds and B-grade bangers but that’s part of the charm. You can stream award-winning films like Brokeback Mountain and Birdman, bonafide classics like Metropolis and Nosferatu, as well as some of the worst and best-of-the-bad flicks like Samurai Cop and Plan 9 From Outer Space.

Looking for something new to stream tonight? These services offer free trials so you won’t pay a cent unless you decide to keep subscribed once your trial’s up.

Next best for free movies

Kanopy houses over 6,000 movies and over 100 TV shows but more important is the quality of movies you can find there. A huge number of Kanopy's movies hold an IMDB score of 7 or above. It’s also the only place you’ll find masterpieces like Kurosawa’s Rashomon or Tarkovsky’s Solaris, which is why it’s considered an invaluable free resource for anyone studying film.

But therein lies the biggest problem (and catch) with Kanopy. To access it, you need an eligible library card from a library that pays for it. While it might be free to you, a subscription to Kanopy can cost your library a small fortune, and depending on what plan your library pays for, you might be limited to ten streams per month.

Those caveats make it hard to recommend to a broader audience. Kanopy’s competitor Beamafilm offers a similar service but also gives the general public the option to pay for a subscription. That said, paying for it means it no longer qualifies as a free streaming service.

3. SBS On Demand

Best catch-up streaming site.

Where Kanopy is free with a few strings attached, SBS On Demand is a bonafide free movie streaming service so long as you’re willing to put up with the ads. SBS On Demand might not have the biggest movie library out there (just over 1200 movies at last check) but it does offer a curated collection of some truly outstanding films. On the fresher side of its collection, there’s Bong Joon Ho's award-winning Parasite, 2018 cult-horror flick In Fabric, and Barry Jenkin's drama If Beale Street Could Talk. There are a few quality classics too, like Rabbit-Proof Fence, Lion and Fitzcarraldo.

As you can probably tell by now, it’s not typically the place you go for action-packed comfort viewing but it’s not all so serious. I mean, it’s got the Timecop, The Fifth Element and cult-classic Near Dark at the moment but you probably won't find the latest Fast and the Furious movie streaming on SBS On Demand. 

SBS On Demand's better strength is the access it gets to critically acclaimed television. Donald Glover's Atlanta has long called SBS home here in Australia, but it's currently joined by comedy sci-fi The Orville. comedy quiz show Taskmaster, Fear the Walking Dead and AMC all-timer Halt and Catch Fire. 

4. ABC iview

Best free streaming site for families.

ABC iview and SBS On Demand are birds of a feather. Two of Australia's most cherished TV networks, evolved for the on-demand age. While SBS On Demand has a focus on highlighting multicultural voices in Australia, and more mature, high-brow content, ABC iview's focus is on family programming and locally produced comedy and drama. It's partnership with BBC also makes it Australia's closest thing to a free-to-air UKTV. Amongst the best of the Brits, you'll find popular crime shows like Midsomer Murders and Broadchurch, as well as modern hits like Killing Eve, Schitt's Creek and of course, everyone's favourite, Bluey. 

Bluey itself is more than enough to draw most Australian families in, but ABC iview is a veritable treasure trove for kids of all ages. The little ones will squeal with joy at the site of Peppa Pig, Octonauts, Bing and Sesame Street, whereas young teens will dig the selection  cartoons available; Dragon Ball Z, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Avatar: The Legend of Korra, just to name a few. 

And, of course, ABC iview is always worth signing up to if you follow the network's various national and regional news programs.

5. Prime Video

Best free trial for streaming movies.

When it comes to the sheer number of movies available, it seems you can’t go past Prime Video. Amazon’s streaming service had over 7,000 movies available when we last checked. More importantly, it seems they are the movies people want to watch.

Roku doesn't just make some of the best streaming devices ; the company also has a free streaming channel that you can access from any Roku product or the web. Here you'll find an impressive array of ad-supported TV shows and feature films you can stream for free – and while Roku's movie collection is modest, it has one of the strongest lineups of free TV shows you can find anywhere. 

There's a mix of classic and contemporary movies (like "Click," "Superbad," and "Minority Report") to choose from. There's no need to create an account (though you can if you want to) and ads, while present, are not overly intrusive. Newly-added titles on the platform include "The Lovely Bones," "Blackfish," and "Burlesque."

YouTube offers hundreds of free movies and TV shows (with ads), making it a convenient one-stop shop for all types of video content. YouTube is also one of the few sites where the content is rated by users and you can read comments about the movies as you watch them.

The best part about YouTube is that all the free movies are arranged in a single category.

Vudu is the streaming video arm of Fandango that offers both free and paid videos. It's easy to find the free content thanks to a Free link at the top of the page. There, you'll find thousands of movies – new and old, popular films, and schlock.

The site also does a great job of sorting the movies into categories like Mythical Creatures, New Releases, and Thrilling Suspense, for easy browsing.

Crackle has been around a long time — it got its start in 2004. And unlike some other streaming channels, Crackle is 100% free, offering all its content at no cost (with ads), so anything you see on the site you can watch without paying. 

You can browse movies and TV shows by genre, alphabetically, or search for a specific title.

Popcornflix is another completely free video streaming site, offering about 2,000 movies with ads in a variety of categories. Tubi is a free streaming service with thousands of movies and TV shows. You can watch it all online or on a number of devices including Roku, Apple TV, Xbox, Playstation, Samsung smart TVs, and Sony smart TVs. 

You don't need a subscription, and Tubi boasts that it has fewer ads than cable. Like Pluto TV, Tubi has both on-demand and live programming. There's also a kids' section of the website with family movies and TV shows to watch with your little ones.

Kanopy is a bit different than the average free streaming service – it is targeted at library patrons and higher education. If you have a public library card, you can log into Kanopy with your library ID and password; otherwise, if you're a student or processor you can use your university login at participating schools.   

The number of movies you can watch depends on the specific school or library you sign up through; you might have anywhere from five to 50 credits each month. Kanopy is a great resource not just for TV shows and movies, but also documentaries, instructional, and educational videos.

Kanopy's selection includes countless thought-provoking and award winning titles from cinema titans like Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, and Raoul Peck. Many of the titles are written and performed in languages other than English, allowing you to easily explore the world's best cinema.

You may not be aware that the Internet Archive , in addition to being a treasure trove of books, webpages, and historical documents, also has thousands of free feature films available to watch.   

Don't look here for contemporary movies or the latest blockbusters, though. As you'd expect from the Internet Archive, these films are in the public domain – generally older films and those made outside the Hollywood cinema industry. 

This also means they're oftentimes of lower quality, so your mileage may vary when it comes to deciding if it's worth your time to browse here. The sheer scope of content on The Internet Archive (combined with the fact that it's largely volunteer-run) means you may have to do some serious digging to find gems.

Freevee is an Amazon premium free streaming service, previously known as IMDb TV. It’s available from anywhere in the world and on a variety of devices (PC and via the app). There are ads embedded in each video, however, and you can’t see the exact time when the ad will be played or its duration. There’s no “Recently Watched” option and you can’t continue where you left off unless you sign in.

Most of the content is sorted randomly on a PC. There are some categories such as ‘ “For You,” “Popular,” and “Amazon Originals.” On mobile, you can sort the content more efficiently by categories (family, popular movies, etc.).

Tube is a platform created by Fox. It doesn’t require a subscription or login. However, by signing up you’ll have access to parental controls, watch lists, and CC options. On the “Movies” page, you’ll see that all the movies are grouped into a variety of subcategories based on different criteria, besides the genre.

What’s best about Pluto TV is that you can continue watching the videos anytime, and you have access to your watchlist without signing up or subscribing. One of the downsides is outdated content in the on-demand movie selection.

You might not have thought about this option. We’re all familiar with YouTube, but have you ever used it to watch free movies? It’s super easy to navigate to the movie section in just a few steps. On the left side of the screen, you’ll be able to see the Movies and TV Shows button. From here, you just need to scroll down until you see the Free to watch movies category. You can also access any free movie by typing in the full title and adding “free with ads” next to it, which should lead you to the same page.

When you go to the See more button in the right corner, you can go through the entire collection of YouTube free titles and choose what you want to watch. However, there isn’t any filtering option to help you sort out their library. As with YouTube videos, the ads are embedded in every movie and can be a bit annoying. The upside is that some ads can be skipped after a couple of seconds.

If you switch to view all free content, everything is better organized into various subcategories. The downside is that these aren’t movie exclusives. Between the subcategories, you’ll find clickable banners that direct you to “Recommended For You” and “New to Free” pages. Vudu offers around 11,000 ad-supported titles for free. Keep in mind that most free content is outdated, so you won’t find any of the newest titles available.

Crackle is an American streaming service, previously owned by Sony Pictures. It doesn’t offer exclusive content from other paid streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and HBO. There are lots of ads, however. The upside is that you can see when they will be played once you start watching the movie. You don’t need to sign in for Crackle. It’s free and does provide very useful options like a “Watch List,” “Favorites,” and “Continue Watching.” You can easily navigate to movies from the upper bar on the website.

The movies are sorted by category in the left bar, and you also have the option to sort the movies in alphabetical order or by release date.

You can access free movies by clicking the button in the upper menu. From there, you’ll see various subcategories such as “Zumo Exclusives,” “Editorial Picks,” and others.

Keep in mind that as with most streaming services, these titles change and something you watched before, might not be available anymore. Unfortunately, most of the free content is outdated, so you won’t be able to find the newer titles.

Even though there are ads embedded, you can see how long they will last and have access to a “Skip” button after a designated period. The quality of videos is set automatically to 720p but you have the option to change the video quality. One of the downsides is that you can’t save videos, create your watchlists, or use search to find what you need.

8. Roku Channel

The Roku channel offers various movies and TV shows. The content is sorted into different subcategories. The platform offers its original content together with popular titles, but these aren’t new. On the home page, you can see movies sorted into various subcategories based on genre, theme, or country.

While scrolling through this page, you can also return to “Continue Watching” the movie you previously started. You can also use the tags under the chosen movie title to navigate your way to the similar categories you might be interested in.

Like other free streaming platforms, you’ll have to deal with lots of commercials inserted in the video. However, you can view when the ads will be played. The number and length of the ads vary depending on the duration of the movie.

Signing in allows you to save favorite titles, create watchlists, and access the “Continue Watching” option.

Kodi isn’t a typical streaming service. Rather, it’s a software media player and entertainment hub. This means Kodi doesn’t have its extensive movie library, but requires you to provide one of your own. Kodi allows you to play various media through it and connect it to different devices.

If you want to watch movies or TV shows, you must do so through add-ons. These add-ons connect you to most paid or free streaming services. Some of which hold copyright concerns and pirated content. For that reason, you might want to pay extra attention to which ones you use. Kodi does offer the “Search” function, but for more refined sorting options, you’ll need an add-on as well.

AZ Movies is a website that allows free streaming. Most of the movies are in HD and are available on various servers. Their site states that no illegal or copywrite files are hosted on the servers but on third-party affiliate websites. In the drop-down menu, the movies are sorted by genre and date of release. You can also access “Featured Movies” from the same menu. Aside from the standard search option, there aren’t more refined filters or subcategories on the website.

The website is accessible through the browser of any device and you can also cast it on a TV or play it via the downloader app. There are a lot of annoying pop-ups if you try to play any video on the site. If you want to click on CC or other options once the video is already playing, more pop-ups show up. All servers offer CC in multiple languages.

11. 123 movies

This is one of the apps and websites with copyright concerns, so you should keep that in mind before accessing it. On the plus side, 123movies has a huge movie and TV show library with over 300,000 titles. They provide even the newest and most exclusive titles from other streaming platforms completely for free, and in HD. One of the most convenient features is that most videos have CC in multiple languages.

From the top bar, you can access “Movies” and “Top IMDb” titles. There’s a standard search option. By clicking on the Browse button, you can access movies by genre. That said, there aren’t too many useful sorting functions.

From the home page, you also can access all the content (movies and TV shows) which then shows a few subcategories, like “Trending,” “Latest,” and “Coming Soon.” If you want to add a title to “Favorite” or make your list, you have to create an account.

12. UpMovies

UpMovies offers over 180,000 titles for movies and TV shows. It can be played via the app on mobile devices or accessed on PC and Smart TV browsers. Like other websites that offer the newest titles completely free, you should remember to keep your PC protected. There are lots of pop-ups and they might be infected with malicious software.

Compared to other streaming websites, however, UpMovies offers exceptional sorting options from the upper bar by genre, country, and release year. In their library, you can sort and find lots of movies in foreign languages and you can access them easily through the “Country” sorting filter.

Unfortunately, these videos often don’t have CC in English. Even so, if you’re multilingual or speak various languages, it can be an excellent way to explore foreign movies.

13. SolarMovie

Unfortunately, the navigation and sorting on the SolarMovie website are confusing. On the home page, the movies and TV shows are listed in the “Latest” and “Suggestion” categories. However, on the top bar, there are Genres, Country, and IMDB buttons as well as Movies and TV Shows. Once you go to the Movies page you have additional sorting options. By clicking on the Filter button, you have an overwhelming number of options for sorting. All of which overlap with what is offered on the home page and in the upper bar.

Note that clicking action you perform on the website triggers a pop-up or a potentially dangerous website to open. Sadly, the regular ad-blocker won’t help you here. SolarMovie offers the latest titles, and most of the videos are in HD 1080p with the option to change the video quality settings. The CC option is embedded in every video, but the multilanguage options aren’t available for all movies.

I spend some time each month looking for the best free movie sites on the internet. This list was last updated in April to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending Now — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include Van Wilder, Never Back Down, The Tuche Family, Black Mountain Side, Barbecue, and The New Adventures of Aladdin.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies . And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles that were uploaded by someone random. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies, uploaded and managed by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch Proximity and Twilight ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: The Godfather, Tremors, The Rookie, Ava, and 17 Again.

Something you can't get with YouTube, but that is supported by most of these movie sites, is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free movies. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

Here are some of the most popular movies you can watch at Freevee: Fantastic Journey to Oz, All Saints, Space Explorers, Air Force 2, A Nanny's Revenge , and Emma.

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but there are also some with full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Examples include Hollywood Icons, Goofus and Goofus, Black Cinema, '90s Throwback , and Cult Films.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Norbit, The Quiet Man, Tommy Boy, She's the Man, Crawl, and The Truman Show.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't have an idea about what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that not only does it let you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Some examples of 2024 titles include Offworld: Alien Planet, Calber Island, Much Ado, Live Hard, Lola, Me & Will , and Mary Mary .

One great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern-looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for example, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals and list some titles by a common theme. I've seen Disaster Movie Madness, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and associated software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too, including Based On a True Story, Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, Midnight Movies, and Most Woof-listed .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists these titles and more: Lord of War, Movie 43, The Impossible, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Knowing.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen here that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, Asia's Top Cinema, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema .

Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most-watched movies are The Wonderpill, The Hard Ride, and The Maid. Some trending titles over this last month include 5 Shells, In Tranzit , and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming player. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, or tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include Fools in Love, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Environment, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: Rabbit, Ninja: Shadow Of A Tear, Red Line, Losin' It, Swift, and Dune Warriors.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include Autumn Road, Repeat, Night Night, Megan , and Infinitum: Subject Unknown .

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include Memento, The Girl on the Train, and Maurice.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

Tired of paying a hefty streaming bill? The best free streaming services let you watch popular movies and TV shows — without paying a single cent. These free streaming services offer both live TV and on-demand content, mostly older and classic titles but also some newer hits and originals.

The best streaming services have more than proved their usefulness in entertaining everybody at home. But signing up for all of them is just not financially feasible for most people. That’s where the best free streaming services come in. They can provide hours of free TV and movies at no cost. You will have to watch ads, but that’s no different than what you get through an expensive cable package. Again: They’re free!

And since they cost $0, you can sign up for all of the best free streaming services on our list. We've ranked them anyway, since nobody has an endless amount of time.

Amazon Freevee , a rebrand of the service formerly known as IMDb TV, features an impressive library of free on-demand content. The TV selection consists of the typical free shows like Hell's Kitchen but also past hits like Lost, Desperate Housewives and Mad Men. Plus, Freevee also makes originals, like the revivals Bosch: Legacy and Leverage: Redemption and courtroom reality sensation Jury Duty.

The movie lineup is better than competitors, with recent titles including Deadpool, The King of Staten Island, Spy, Emma and The Invisible Man.

2. Roku Channel

The Roku Channel app comes automatically with any Roku TV or device, but it’s also available for download on mobile phones and tablets. You can also access it on the web. The Roku Channel doesn’t force you to register for an account (you can watch as a guest) but signing up allows you to continue watching content on another device.

Like the other services, it offers on-demand movies and TV shows. The Roku Channel also rolled out a Roku Live TV Guide , so viewers can channel surf. The best part of Roku Channel is that it often streams the first episodes of premium cable shows, like Game of Thrones, Billions, Outlander and Watchmen. But when it comes to having whole shows, you don't have series of that caliber, but stuff like This Old House instead. Some of our staff lit up at that news, while others, well, we kept clicking around in Roku looking for something else. And remembering that Peacock is better for more-recent content.

The Roku Channel has risen in our free streaming service rankings after adding all the originals from the now-defunct Quibi. That includes some really good series, like Free Rayshawn and Reno 911. Roku is also the place for original movies like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Plus, they get our thanks for saving the NBC-canceled series Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist with a Christmas special.

3. Pluto TV

The Viacom-owned Pluto TV has a decent selection of on-demand movies and shows but where it really shines is in live TV streaming. Viewers can browse live channels in a grid, similar to the cable TV guide experience. The lineup draws heavily from Viacom’s other properties, so you can tune into TV Land Drama, BET Her, MTV's Jersey Shore and VH1's I Love Reality. They also offer other recognizable brands, like CNN and Fox Sports — though those run curated clips, not the actual live broadcast you’d see if you watched them on cable.

We're still waiting for Pluto to add dedicated channels for shows that we really care about — recent editions include Baywatch, Stargate and Degrassi — but we do know people who love those shows, and keep going back to Pluto to binge-watch. For more modern content, check our Peacock.

As we poked around Pluto, we noted its interface is clean and simple, making it easy to toggle between live and on-demand. Both are organized into categories, making it easy to find the kind of content you want to watch. Yes, there are ads, but no more than what you’d get watching cable. And Pluto TV doesn’t even require registration, though users can special features if they do sign up for an account, such as the ability to designate favorite channels and resume watching a program on a different device. As for the latest, a recent update to Pluto TV added a ton of free TV , including two huge channels: Rocky and Sailor Moon.

Think of Tubi as a free version of Netflix, with an on-demand library of over 20,000 movies and TV shows. Of course, Tubi doesn’t have the newer, high-profile titles that a subscription platform boasts, nor originals. But their catalog is still impressive for a free streaming service. 

Tubi (now owned by Fox Corporation) was able to build it by partnering with over 250 providers, including Hollywood heavyweights Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM. Recent available titles include The Terminator, Foxcatcher, Kill Bill, The Craft and Fruitvale Station. Personally, our streaming media editor Henry T. Casey loves Tubi for one show and one show only: Lucha Underground, a stylized wrestling show on El Vez. Recently, Tubi added the former HBO series The Nevers.

Tubi has a clean, streamlined experience. When we tested Tubi, we saw that its home page is organized into sections like Recently Added, Family Movies, Action and Black Cinema. Clicking the menu for even more genres and curated collections, we saw the clever and cheeky Not on Netflix area. While you don’t have to sign up to use Tubi, registering for an account gives you access to parental controls, a queue and viewing history.

Crackle is a pioneer in the free streaming space, launching in 2004 — back when Netflix was still shipping DVDs. Owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, Crackle houses free movies and TV shows and even original programming, which sets it apart from many of the other free streaming services on this list. Crackle doesn’t require registration, though an account lets you add favorites and save progress while watching a movie.

The movies library is much bigger than the TV one and much more interesting. Crackle is one of the best free streaming services because it goes further than most, with originals featuring top actors including Martin Freeman, Bryan Cranston and Rupert Grint. It's just that these are their lesser-known titles, and while we're open to discover new projects, we're also wary that there may be a bad reason why we don't known about these shows.

Unlike Peacock, Crackle doesn't require signing up for a service to watch content. You can just open their page, click on a show or movie, watch and ad and then see the thing you want.

6. Sling Freestream

Sling is one of the best cable TV alternatives in the market at $40 per month for 50-plus channels. Recently, they relaunched a no-cost service with the name Freestream that boasts live and on-demand content. We love Sling, as multiple TG staffers have used it to cut the cord, and a free version may be the ticket to getting more users to try the platform. 

Sling Freestream launched with 210 channels and 41,000 on-demand titles across genres including news, sports, game shows, crime dramas, nature, home improvement and cooking. Some of the channels are familiar names like ABC News Live, ESPN On Demand, Family Feud, Forensic Files, Hell's Kitchen, Rick Steves Europe, VH1 I Love Reality and The Walking Dead Universe. Plus, users can add on premium streaming services like AMC Plus and Showtime. 

Expect more channels and on-demand titles as Sling Freestream continues to build out its offering.

The Walmart-owned Vudu is a digital marketplace where you can purchase the latest movies and TV shows but also stream free content. To use Vudu, you will have to sign up for an account (or use your Walmart account). Once you do that, you can access over 10,000 free movies and TV episodes. None of them are new blockbusters but the selection is superior among free streaming services. The movies area is better than TV, with recent titles including Troy, The Prestige, All Is Lost, Hoosiers, Four Weddings and a Funeral. And unlike other free services, Vudu is planning to produce original shows, like the sci-fi series Albedo with Evangeline Lilly.

Testing Vudu out, we found that its interface is easy to use. Free content is clearly marked and you can filter for just free titles. The ads are about as frequent as other free services, but they tend to be more repetitive (and sometimes annoyingly interactive, requiring you to choose an option). Poking around Vudu's free section, though, we couldn't help but notice multiple titles that seemed a bit risque for the top of the stack — titles that we'd have a hard time explaining to kids. That's not a problem on most of the above services, as Peacock, Pluto, Roku Channel and other services don't promote that content as highly.

Xumo is another free streaming service with live and on-demand content. The app comes on several major smart TV brands and can also be downloaded on Roku , iOS and Android. No registration is required. Xumo offers more than 190 channels, including top brands like NBC News, Fox Sports, Funny or Die and TMZ.

Xumo’s main experience is a grid-type guide, just like you’d get with cable TV — and Pluto and Peacock. You can watch live as you channel surf. The on-demand area lists all the channels, broken down by genre. The interface doesn’t make it that easy to see what TV shows are available, though. It looks like Xumo has the usual free fare: 21 Jump Street, Forensic Files, Family Feud and Unsolved Mysteries. The mobile app at least has a movies tab that you can browse.

Note: Peacock Free is being sunset for new users. Existing account holders will still be able to access Peacock Free for the present.

NBC's Peacock TV is a behemoth, with over 13,000 hours of content available in its Peacock Free tier. That content is top-notch, too. You'll find titles like The Office, 30 Rock, Battlestar Galactica, Cheers, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood and Parks and Recreation. And there are a lots of older movies to watch, from Harry Potter to Jurassic Park.

When we used Peacock, to see what it's like, we found that the free tier is definitely a sort of gateway drug. It's nice that the first episodes of big-name original shows such as Girls5Eva are available for free, but we get that NBCUniversal doesn't want to give whole shows away — that's what the $4.99 Peacock plan is for (although it might come in a little less with the right Peacock TV promo code ). Peacock Free didn't require us to to enter our credit card info, but you must create an account to watch — something that Pluto, Xumo and others don't enforce. 

There are also "live" channels, based on brands like Saturday Night Live and the Today Show. If you don't know what to watch , channel surf and check out what's playing at the moment. How we test the best free streaming services

Shows and movies on free streaming services come and go with the frequency of Spinal Tap drummers, red-shirts on Star Trek and roses on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

So, first and foremost, we check these services frequently to make sure they're still providing some good content (specific shows and movies are subject to the whims and contracts we're not privy to).

On top of that, we also look at these services on the best streaming devices to make sure that everyone gets a quality experience. This is how we know that Freevee is more prominent on Fire TV hardware than elsewhere.

Lastly, we do the hard work and actually watch the shows and movies, to make sure these apps actually work well. We don't expect them all to function as well as paid services, but we love it when they have the same high-quality apps.

How to choose the best free streaming service for you 

Luckily, since they are all free, you don’t need to choose just one of the best free streaming services. However, you may find it difficult to balance a bunch of different apps and want to focus on just one or two. 

The first consideration should be whether you want to be able to watch live channels. If that’s the case, you may want to use Pluto TV, Sling Free, Xumo, Peacock or the Roku Channel. If you only care about finding movies and TV shows on-demand, then try Freevee, Peacock, Crackle, Tubi or Vudu. 

Content selection is the other major thing that distinguishes the free streaming services from each other. Aside from Peacock, with its library of name-brand content, almost all of them have the same core of free TV shows, like Hell’s Kitchen and Roseanne. But some, like Freevee and Crackle, have more robust movie libraries. Others provide access to top past shows, like Peacock and the Roku Channel. So, peruse the available titles and see if the streamer has options that appeal to you. After all, even if these services are free, doesn’t mean they have stuff you want to watch.

• kep55 We have a Samsung "smart tv" which comes with their TV Plus service, and a LG not-so-smart tv. We have tubi and pluto on the Sammy. And we have kanopy courtesy our library. How does one get any of these on a not smart tv? We do have an amazon tv box. Reply
• Sid23 Buy a Roku. I just bought a Roku streaming stick 4K and am using it on my old Samsung (2013) non smart tv. As long as it has an HDMI port and is within distance of good WIFI signal you can get all those apps on the Roku. I got the streaming stick because it is supposed have long range WIFI reach. It is usually $49.99 and now is on sale online only for $29.99 (Walmart) I still have cable and am using the Rokus to get rid of cable boxes. Working my way slowly to cutting the cable. Reply

It's owned by Fandango Media, which is owned by WarnerMedia (25%) and NBCUniversal, a division of Comcast. Comcast also owns XUMO and Peacock Free, which are also on your list. If you want to use a PC then Kodi is what you want to use. It's free although some "channels" require you to have a Real Debrib or Premiumize. You can also buy a Taiwanese TV box (Android) called EVPAD and Unblock Ubox for a few hundred US dollars and never have to pay for a subscription. Reply

You need to register for a free Vudu account to use this service, but it's worth doing so. Once you do, you can use your account to activate digital copies of movies and shows, as well as buy and rent movies from Vudu.

Like Crackle, Popcornflix presents full movies with limited ads. Here, you'll find a range of movies in a rotating selection, and there's no account required to start watching. The service even offers some original content, to boot.

Flicks are segmented into genres that are more unique than the standard ones, such as Out for Revenge and Medieval Action . With a beefy lineup and easy navigation, Popcornflix is an awesome choice for free, legal movie streaming.

Providing free movies and shows, Tubi is another fantastic service for legal movie streams. Here, you'll be able to view newer movies from as recent as 2022, as well as older favorites.

Helpfully, Tubi offers a Leaving Soon category. This lets you prioritize your streaming queue so you can catch movies and shows before they disappear. Be sure to check out the First Time on Tubi collection, too.

7. Pluto TV

Pluto TV has a lot to offer. You'll find a Live TV section where you can switch between channels, much like traditional cable. If you can't find something that you like on the live stations, switch to the On Demand section at the top. Here you'll find tons of free movies you can start streaming right away.

As the name suggests, Classic Cinema Online focuses on older content. Even its website aesthetic captures a decidedly retro vibe, using a backdrop of red theater curtains. If you don't have a library card or your library doesn't support Hoopla, you won't be able to use it. But if you can, it's a service worth checking out.

Although Yidio isn't a video host, it does act as an excellent aggregator of free streaming movies and TV shows. The way Yidio works is by redirecting you to third-party services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, and others. As such, certain films and shows here do require a subscription.

Don't be fooled by The Roku Channel's name. While it's available for Roku streaming devices via an app, you can watch on the web too. With a few clicks, you can stream Roku Originals, popular TV shows, and new-arrival movies.

The selection rotates, and there are categories on the main page to help you find something you'll enjoy. As expected, you'll have to sit through ads, but ad-supported means free, right?

The no-charge content on these platforms is a little different from the free trials offered by many subscription streaming services. The content on Crackle or Peacock, for example, is available without the need to set up an account on the platform. You also don't have to provide any payment information. Free-trial services work a little differently. Many premium streaming platforms, such as Disney+ and Apple TV+, offer free trial periods during which you can watch their content without paying. The same is true of many network streaming platforms such as STARZ or Showtime. The difference is that you'll need to sign up for an account on the platform and provide payment information. American Fiction , an Oscar-winning awards season juggernaut and top pick of film critics, is coming to streaming on Prime Video.

The 2023 film, which won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for screenwriter Cord Jefferson, makes its debut on the platform in mid-May.

Jefferson also directed the comedy satire, which follows Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a Black author who is disenfranchised by his fellow authors’ perspectives when writing about representation and the African American experience.

As such, Monk jokingly writes a novel similar to his counterparts under a pseudonym and becomes shocked when the book becomes a best-selling national sensation.

How To Watch ‘American Fiction’

According to streaming tracker When to Stream , American Fiction will be released as a streaming video on demand title on Prime Video on May 14, meaning you can stream the movie for free provided you are an Amazon Prime member.

The film is currently available for digital rental on several online platforms including Prime Video and MGM+ as well as VUDU for $3.99 or purchase for $9.99. Viewers who don’t want to wait can stream the film now if you become a paid subscriber to Amazon subsidiary MGM+.

In addition to its Oscar win for Cord Jefferson for Best Adapted Screenplay, American Fiction also received Oscar nominations in 2024 for Best Picture, Best Actor for Jeffrey Wright, Best Supporting Actor for Sterling K. Brown and Best Original Score for composer Laura Karpman.

Wright and Brown were also nominated in their respective categories by the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the film earned a Best Ensemble nomination from SAG — which is the guild’s equivalent of a Best Picture honor.

Jefferson was also honored with a Best Director nomination at the 2024 Directors Guild of America Awards and the Producers Guild of America nominated American Fiction as one of its 10 nominees for Best Picture. Jefferson also won a Best Adapted Screenplay award from the Writers Guild of America.

In addition, American Fiction received five nominations each for NAACP Image Awards, the Film Independent Spirt Awards and the Critics Choice Association Awards, including Best Picture nominations from each of the organizations. Jefferson took the Best Adapted Screenplay honor at the Spirit Awards.

The Golden Globes also honored American Fiction with nominations for Best Motion Picture in a Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Wright.

American Fiction debuted in limited release in theaters on December 15, 2023, and went on to make $21.1 million at the domestic box office with $1.9 at the international box office for a worldwide tally of $23 million in ticket sales.

In addition to all of its awards season acclaim, American Fiction earned a stellar 93% “fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 282 reviews. The film was received even better by moviegoers, as more than 1,000 verified ratings on the site yielded a 96% positive Audience Score.

Also starring Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexandra, Leslie Uggams, John Ortiz and Adam Brody, American Fiction makes its SVOD debut on Prime Video on May 14.

Our collaboration with the animated classic, *Princess Mononoke*, pays tribute to the enchanting world created by its makers, Japan’s pioneering Studio Ghibli. Here, the Levi's® design team discusses their creative process and inspirations.

“Levi's® has a long history and a very iconic look—it's what’s made us stand out for 170+ years. And from the beginning of Studio Ghibli’s co-founding by Director Hayao Miyazaki, they’ve also been stylistically iconic—when you see one of their films, you know it’s Studio Ghibli. Throughout Miyazaki’s work, his scrutiny of detail is unparalleled. The craftsmanship shows. And Levi's® has set the bar super-high as far as timelessness goes. Levi's® and Studio Ghibli are both very detail-centric and iconic in their own ways. We built the collection around celebrating several of Levi's® iconic pieces—including our 501® ’93 Jeans, which came out roughly the time *Princess Mononoke* was released. But we also had pieces that lent themselves to a Japanese aesthetic.”

“We used the beautiful, lush environments, too. *Princess Mononoke* features hand-painted backgrounds depicting gorgeous scenes in nature, and that’s something we felt really inspired by. We wanted to bring an emphasis on that into the pieces.”

LIGHT DENIM DAY

“Our light indigo denim features key characters San and Ashitaka out in the sunlit day. For our San & Wolf Trucker Jacket and Ashitaka 501® ’93 Jeans (or, for warm days, the San & Moro 501® Shorts), we used the forest and sun background from the film, and integrated the scenery with the denim. The sky imagery is actually the light blue wash of the denim coming through, so it’s this lovely integration of the art and our denim.”

DARK DENIM NIGHT

“There’s a lot of play on the light and dark of the film—for instance, the Nightwalker, a forest spirit that only comes out during the night, dawn or dusk. On the advice of the Ghibli team, we were able to use their image on our darker indigo pieces—the Nightwalker Denim Kimono Jacket and the Kodama Denim Overall. The dark indigo creates the atmosphere out of which this character appears: the Nightwalker rises up into the nighttime sky with all the little Kodama, or tree spirits, in the treetops gazing up at them.” 

THE PACING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DENIM AND THE GRAPHIC TEES MIMICS THE PACING OF THE FILM.

“While our approach to the denim was atmospheric, for the graphic tees and hoodie we moved closer to the characters, using the film’s own language to give voice to their ideologies—as with Ashitaka’s words: ‘To see with eyes unclouded by hate.’ These pieces are more direct, more streetwear-inspired than the denim. But there's a rhythmic juxtaposition between the two. *Princess Mononoke* has these beautiful, quiet moments—and then all of a sudden there’ll be a frenetic action sequence. Our pacing of the relationship between the denim pieces and our graphic tees and hoodie mimics the pacing of the film.”

“We wanted to create little moments from the film that you could take around with you every day. Our bandana—a classic Western-American Levi's® piece—features San’s mystical red battle mask, so it felt like a marrying of the two. For a head-to-toe look, the Ancient Forest Bucket Hat can be worn with our light indigo denim hookup, but obviously you can wear it with other pieces, too. Another way to keep *Princess Mononoke* by your side—literally—is to carry our San & Ashitaka Tote, with San on one side and Ashitaka on the other. And our two coin bags, one featuring San’s mask and the other a Kodama face, are for wearing around your neck or hanging off a belt loop or tote.”
