The authors, executive coaches for women leaders, wanted to understand why some women are able to sustain and maintain career momentum, despite the systemic, structural problems women — and especially women of color — face in the workplace. They interviewed 37 women in senior leadership roles, identifying three behaviors that helped these women sustain momentum: a focused drive, an incessant desire to learn, and an agile mindset.

Jackie began her career as a scientist doing drug discovery. After a few years, she realized she wanted to work on the strategy side of the business. But every time she tried to make the shift, she was turned down.

Women Have Reclaimed Ambition—Now, Let’s Reframe It

Author, CEO, and lawyer Meena Harris explains why the word "ambitious" may no longer serve the women who seek it out.

Growing up, my family taught me to be ambitious; to live life with courage and conviction, to work hard, fight challenges, and celebrate wins. I wasn’t the only one raised this way: a 2022 survey found that nearly half of American women consider themselves “very ambitious.”

Not even 20 years ago, Harvard Business Review published articles like “ Do Women Lack Ambition ,” while some researchers suggested that differences in how men and women solicit acknowledgment, pursue goals, and respond to praise in the workplace are simply innate.

But by 2012, the script had been flipped, with Pew Research finding that “ Women Are Now More Ambitious Than Men ”—at least, as measured by commitment to a career. But as more prominent women sought aspirational goals, people stopped asking whether women lacked ambition, and started asking if they had too much of it . To this day, per studies, ambitious men are perceived as powerful, whereas ambitious women are dismissed as power-hungry.

And so—like so many words used against us—women have reclaimed ambition as our own: not only using the word to describe ourselves, but running on it , and wearing the word on our sleeves (figuratively and literally ).

Yet despite our self-identified ambition, women aren’t feeling much more fulfilled, supported, or even successful for it. In the past year, women—especially women of color— reported higher levels of stress and burnout, continued harassment and microaggressions at work, and inflexible working policies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more people quit their jobs in the second half of 2021 than ever documented ; women are disproportionately represented in that figure, a phenomenon economists credit , at least in part, to lack of fulfillment in our careers.

So, if the last decade saw women reclaim ambition, perhaps this might be the moment for us to reframe it—because if the “very ambitious” turn out to also be “very exhausted,” there may be limits to the value of the term as we know it.

The problem is, society hasn’t quite caught up with women’s ambitions about ambition. Culturally, women remain in an impossible double bind: if our ambition is career-driven, we’re seen as bossy ; if our ambition is family-driven, we’re viewed as unmotivated ; if our ambition is to pursue a career and a family, we’re uncommitted to either . Black women face greater stigma—one 2022 study found that Black women leaders were more likely than other women to want to be top executives—but less likely to actually hold those positions .

Policy hasn’t caught up, either. Women still lack resources—from paid leave to childcare to abortion rights—to achieve our goals without making serious sacrifices. Serena Williams put it best in describing her choice to retire from tennis to focus on her family: “If I were a guy,” she explained , “I wouldn't be writing this because I'd be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.” It’s a sentiment shared not only by fellow athletes , but workers everywhere : women are tasked with the impossible burden of knocking down structural barriers on an individual basis.

I’m all for kicking over hurdles and shattering glass ceilings. But there must be a better way for women to achieve our ambitions without losing ourselves. That’s why I believe it’s time to redefine ambition. It shouldn’t just be about doing our best, but feeling our best; achieving a sense of self-worth and self-satisfaction, whether by focusing on our careers, our families, or God forbid, ourselves. 

In her book All the Gold Stars: Reimagining Ambition and the Ways We Strive , Rainesford Stauffer argues that shifting away from career as the barometer of self-worth can help us tackle feelings of scarcity, anxiety, and loneliness; that meaningful ambition can bring us closer to what we love. In a recent interview , Stauffer shared how she emerged from her struggles with ambition and burnout: “What saved me was not taking on one more project. It was not striving, it was not working a little harder. Honestly, it wasn’t even doing work that felt personally fulfilling. It was other people.”

Of course, it’s one thing to tell ourselves we don’t need to hustle and grind our way into happiness; it’s another to put it into practice. I’m fortunate; my family never put undue pressure on me to pursue a career that fit some narrow definition of success. I became a lawyer anyway—whoops—but I eventually felt empowered to step off of the corporate treadmill and pursue my own venture on my own terms. In doing so, I’ve tried my best to create a space for self-realization and self-actualization for other women, too.

Obviously, reframing ambition will look different for any given woman. But each of us can start by acknowledging that contentment and camaraderie are just as ambitious a pursuit as any career—and that there’s just as much to gain looking in, and looking out, as looking up. Gender equality boosts economic productivity, makes institutions more representative, and makes life better for future generations. This piece gives a good overview of the state of the world (the data is a bit old, but things have not changed significantly) and explores policy implications. The men are still dominating women in some regions like it’s the woman’s duty to work for him endlessly. They do not let them go out or have freedom of any kind.

In addition, domestic violence is a major problem in India. The men beat up their wife and abuse them as they think women are their property. More so, because women are afraid to speak up. Similarly, the women who do actually work get paid less than their male counterparts. It is downright unfair and sexist to pay someone less for the same work because of their gender. Thus, we see how women empowerment is the need of the hour. We need to empower these women to speak up for themselves and never be a victim of injustice .

How to Empower Women?

There are various ways in how one can empower women. The individuals and government must both come together to make it happen. Education for girls must be made compulsory so that women can become illiterate to make a life for themselves.

Women must be given equal opportunities in every field, irrespective of gender. Moreover, they must also be given equal pay. We can empower women by abolishing child marriage. Various programs must be held where they can be taught skills to fend for themselves in case they face financial crisis .

Most importantly, the shame of divorce and abuse must be thrown out of the window. Many women stay in abusive relationships because of the fear of society. Parents must teach their daughters it is okay to come home divorced rather than in a coffin.

How do you define success? For many women, the answer is complicated.

Regardless of their accomplishments, many feel a sense of inadequacy , perhaps uncomfortable about the time they took off work to have children, the sense that they should be advancing more quickly, or that their careers haven’t taken a traditional trajectory.

Writer Milena Nigam is among those who’s spent several decades trying to overcome what some have called the ‘ confidence gap .’ She writes honestly about her insecurities and hopes that she can redefine success in ways that recognize her own strengths and allow her to shed her fear of failure.

She joins host Scott Tong to talk about her essay “ Regrets of Things Past ,” which appears in a recent edition of the online magazine NextAvenue.

I spent much of March traveling the country doing one of my favorite things — spending time with franchise professionals. Each opportunity to dig into the nitty gritty with franchise owners is reinvigorating. One of the lessons I haven't been able to stop thinking about is the incredible strength women can bring to leadership roles . The history of women in franchising is long. In fact, the modern franchising model was created by a woman — Martha Matilda Harper — in 1891. These days, women make up about 30% of franchise owners.

It was an honor to spend Women's History Month connecting one-on-one with so many impressive women — now I want to help them all connect. I returned from my travels and set the wheels in motion to create a new network within Authority Brands to connect and empower women franchise professionals through peer-to-peer learning and community building.

The women leaders I have the privilege of working with consistently demonstrate these key qualities:

1. Resilience

Resilience is a watchword of our era, and it's one of the top qualities I see in the women shaping franchising. A 2023 SAS survey reveals that 97% of executives think resilience is important for their business, but less than half (47%) consider their organization resilient. Women are uniquely qualified to fill that resiliency gap — they likely had to be resilience experts to reach leadership roles.

According to the Pew Research Center , most Americans agree that women have to do more to prove themselves. The Harvard Business Review found that "no age was the right age to be a woman leader. There was always an age-based excuse to not take women seriously, to discount their opinions, or to not hire or promote them."

Women leaders can face many challenges, but the resilience we learn along the way is a superpower.

2. Authenticity

The women leaders who inspire me all have a very strong sense of self. They know who they are, what they believe in, what they're great at and what they need to work on. And they'll tell you without hesitation.

Women who understand personality, values, and vision have the opportunity to set an example as authentic leaders. There is an important relationship between authentic leadership and employees' workplace performance. We're all human, and leading with that understanding has amazing outcomes.

Authenticity can be uncomfortable sometimes. I make it a point to encourage my team to ask for help daily. Our willingness to lean on each other, give and take support and share wins makes us great.

3. Positive communicators

A recent study from S&P Global found that female leaders consistently communicate more positively than their male counterparts. Women were more likely to use words relating to empathy, diversity, and adaptability, while men were more likely to use language associated with transactions, growth, and performance. Positivity and emphasis on empathy, diversity, and adaptability impact every element of a team and can help attract and retain top talent.

To be our best, we need to draw from the full spectrum of communication styles.

Every time I speak with one of our women franchise owners, I see how their empathy helps them empower their employees and understand their customers.

Franchising has never just been about business — it's about people, too. And people remember how you make them feel even more than they remember the words you say. Whether you call it empathy , emotional intelligence , or something else, great women leaders always have it. This strength isn't about being nice, it's about truly understanding people you interact with, and using that to find the best way forward.

The more leaders show empathy and genuinely seek to understand the wants and needs of employees, the happier their teams will be.

5. Collaborative

At our latest Authority Brands board meeting, I snapped a photo of all the women sitting together at a dinner table. Having enough women leaders to fill a table is still rare, but we're changing that.

Bringing together a group of women leaders is a study in collaboration. They understand the power of relationships across all levels. Building strong relationships is especially powerful in franchising because our system is so large, and there is an endless amount to learn from other business owners.

The impressive women leaders I meet are just as interested in learning from and empowering others as they are in growing in their own leadership journey. I think Martha Matilda Harper would be proud.

6. Action-oriented

A perfect vision is only worth so much. The women leaders around me have a keen understanding of this. They're decisive because they know there's no time to waste. It took a lot of time and hard work to get where they are, so they don't hesitate to take the necessary steps to reach the next level.

All of the strengths I've outlined are present in women leaders' decision-making. Their focus on positive collaboration and empathetic understanding results in decisions that are trusted by their team. Their resilience sets an example in times of uncertainty or struggle.

The road to leadership for women looks a little different. Time and understanding is changing that, but for now the challenges we face along the way can help shape us into leaders that women of the future will be proud to share a legacy with.

Every young woman wants to be a success in her personal and professional lives. But the path to success can be tricky and navigating it requires that you be proactive in several aspects of your life. But with some dedication and by following some key tips, you will pave the way to personal and professional success.

Being Successful Personally

Step 1 Set goals.

  • Write your goals on paper. Having a visual cue reminds you of and reinforces your goals. For example, you could write the following: “My short term goal is to find a nice partner and finish my Master’s degree. My mid-term goal is to get engaged and find an exciting job. My long term goal is to get married and have a family while being a successful financial planner.”
  • Update your goals as you meet them. Once or twice a year, reevaluate your goals to make sure they’re still realistic and attainable.

Step 2 Have confidence and believe that you will be successful.

  • Confidence comes from many sources, including knowing that you have a good education and training, good relationships, or even that you look good. If you are lacking confidence in certain areas, take proactive steps to boost it.
  • For example, if you don’t feel confident because they your friends are more successful professionally, then work towards garnering more professional success through education or even a promotion.   • In a world where you are easily contacted by cell phones, email, and social media, having unplugged alone time is vital to maintaining your health by minimizing how much input you need to process on a daily basis. Celebrate your uniqueness. Don't look for external validation. Instead, focus on self-love and self-care, and try to believe in yourself and know your worth. Then, you'll feel beautiful and confident, and you'll radiate that outward. Then, people will see that, rather than insecurity, worry, or doubt, and they'll respond to that more than you know.

  • It’s important to budget. Knowing where your money is coming from and how you’re spending it will help you control your finances more effectively.   • Write down your goals on paper. It’s a good idea to have a visual reminder of your goals. For example you could write: “My short term goal is to do an internship as an editor, my mid-term goal is to get a Master’s in English, and my long-term goal is to work as the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.”

Activist Wawa Gatheru on Championing Black Women as Climate Leaders This Earth Day—And Beyond

Earlier this year, we saw one of the greatest environmental wins of the decade—and Black women were its unsung heroes. President Biden paused all new expansions of dangerous gas export hubs in the U.S., which experts have called carbon bombs . There’s been fanfare and criticism around the decision, but few have acknowledged how Black women made it possible through community organizing and generational grit. The job won’t be done until there is a permanent halt on new expansions of dirty gas. But to get there, we have to turn toward the women who are leading on climate progress around the country.

As a Black girl who grew up in the climate movement, I’ve always been perplexed by the paradox of representation in this space. While people of color are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis, we are routinely sidelined and boxed as ‘victims’ rather than the leaders we are. This is particularly true for Black women.

Women are particularly at risk to climate impacts because enforced gender inequality makes us more susceptible to escalating environmental harms. Black girls, women, and gender-expansive people in particular, bear an even heavier burden because of the historic and continuing impacts of colonialism, racism, and inequality. And that’s why I believe these circumstances uniquely position Black women as indispensable leaders in the climate movement.

A few years ago, I came across a term that encompassed what I have always known to be true. Coined by Dr. Melanie Harris, eco-womanism is a theological approach to environmental justice that focuses on the viewpoints of Black women across the diaspora. An eco-womanist approach to climate solutions is happening in the underbelly of climate injustice in the US, the Gulf South.

I have been honored to learn from and be inspired by the Black women leading on climate in the Gulf South: leaders like Sharon Lavigne of Rise St. James , Dr. Beverly Wright of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice , Roishetta Ozane of The Vessel Project of Louisiana , and Dr. Joy and Jo Banner of The Descendants Project . I’ve heard firsthand how they launched educational campaigns, organized marches, rallies, and petitions, commissioned research, joined lawsuits, and challenged everyone from local lawmakers to the EPA—all to protect their communities. Step by step, they have fought polluters in an 85-mile stretch from New Orleans to Baton Rouge that’s home to more than 200 fossil fuel and petrochemical operations, earning the name ‘Cancer Alley.’

The fight in Cancer Alley is for life, community, and legacy. Where there are now toxins poisoning Black families, there were once plantations enslaving their ancestors. It’s not a coincidence that two history-defining tragedies struck the same area of Louisiana—it is the same system of oppression and racial capitalism in different forms. And it’s no coincidence that the resistance to it calls on a legacy passed down for generations: solidarity, creativity, and bold leadership.

The fight is local and personal, but it’s also global and systemic. And failing to recognize Black women as climate leaders isn’t just a moral dilemma. It is a poor strategic decision for all of us to win on climate.

The same industries that poison Louisiana are also fueling the climate crisis. Last year was the hottest in history , and in 2024, we’ve already seen extreme weather events making this planet increasingly difficult to inhabit. Black and Brown communities might be ground zero for climate change, but our response to this destruction impacts everyone.

The women behind the president’s pause have proven that winning on climate is not impossible. Another world is possible and we can collectively build a better world for all. The organization I founded— Black Girl Environmentalist —puts that lesson into practice around the country. As one of the largest Black youth-led climate organizations, we are ushering the next generation of Black women and gender-expansive individuals into environmental work—cultivating their talent and creativity to protect our communities, and win the fight of our lives against the climate crisis.

As a Gen-Zer, I know how tempting it can be to feel immobilized by eco-anxiety or even climate doom. But we can’t.

We can’t afford to, nor do we have the privilege to. Every fraction of a degree matters. Instead, we must look to and join the leaders who, against all odds, continue to fight and win on climate issues across the country. The pause on dangerous gas expansions showed there is power in our collective voice. Black women have lit the way, showing that the power comes from fighting for—and with—our communities. The work isn’t done, but we’ve come too far to turn back.

and Construction oriented jobs are dominated by Man. By this we can understand that Men are more aggressive than Woman. Governments all around the world actively encouraged woman to take part in country development expect some Gulf countries where woman are only allowed to work in offices but not in other sectors.

I can support through my study that Woman are excelling now a days in every profession, they are leading countries and business, Recently Germany elected its first woman president and companies like Pepsi Co. and other Fortune 500 are managed by Woman CEO’s. Women are working as brand ambassadors for many International brands like Cannon, Sony etc... first women president of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto, which shocked the entire world (New York Times, 2008).

Many influential women around the world are assassinated for dominating men. Although many western countries Already started respecting women in every action they perform. Women are found with caring and intelligent, many of the women are working for there development of the society. I state some of the most influential women in this century are Oprah, Hillary, Mother Theresa, Benazir Bhutto, Indira Ghandi, Angelina Jolie, and many others. Literature Review Success of women is found in every part of the world and it is rapidly changing.

This advancement has made the women to participate the economics of the country. The Scope of this Research is to discuss and survey the factors that are laid for the success of women in which I studied various topics on women development which are explained below. I explained the various stages of women development during last century. In current situations women are given equal opportunities with men. A Woman has found a way to success and they are moving forward. I made Surveys, Interviews, Observations and Research to include in this project, which claims the result.

In Management to Work, Women have very low aggression levels when compared to man, which helps them to be, stress free all the time. Women have an advantage of patience listening and problem solving, which is the sure success formula for there success. Women are intelligent thinkers and solvers who can solve difficult problems and puzzles.

The main added advantage of women is concentration towards work; There Concentration levels are very high when compared to men. Even women now a days developed different techniques to overcome stress at work, which can make them work for longer hours in working environment. When I asked them about the Wage Rate discrimination between men and women? 82% of my friend’s opinion told me that was totally illegal rule, where as 18% of friends told me that women cannot work in stressful locations at work.

I asked my friends that Do you support Women Working in Defense? 100% of my friends told me yes, women can perform in any form of activity. Do you think women in western countries are safe? The result was 92% told me yes, and where as only 8% told me that woman is not safe anywhere in this world, No Country is immune. When I asked my friends that Do you think United Stated has equal gender rights? 100% told yes, United States has equal gender rights and Oppurtunities.

When I did an Internet Research on Recognition of Women in the society Women all around the globe are respected and treated as important source of development and existence of human mankind. International Women’s Day (IWD) is observed on March 8th – Which is celebrated Across the globe. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. The first IWD was observed on Feb 29th, 1909 in the United States. Many women marked there positions as the most influential persons in the world, Such as Mother Teresa who was given Woman of the Century for her service.

Women proved in every area such as Polictics, Business, Adminstration, Law, Engineering etc… Women ruled nations, managed companies taking potential decesions, worked in Space and every deal as the list goes on. Countries like Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka are once ruled by princess and these countries give a lot of importance to woman. Woman in these countries serve in most influential positions in the Government. Many countries have elected women as Presidents, United States in yet to elect a

Lady President. Time Magzine also reported the top most influetial woman on the planet, which is the highest recognition in the society.

Women are given Nobel Lauratee for there excellence in the field of specialisation. – (Success of Women Recognition, 2006) According to Vicki Donlan, author of Her Turn and founder of Women's Business describes why it's time for women to continue to step into leadership roles in America, the steps we can take to make this happen and the benefits for women AND men when more women lead. She said women are capable of leading a country like United States without any obstacles, She also stated that women all around the world are intelligent and courage’s for their development.

Indra Nooyi, CEO of Pepsi Co.: Indra was named the #1 Most Powerful Women in Business in 2006 by Fortune Magazine. As President and Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, she is the highest ranking Woman in corporate America. She's helped engineer over $30 billion worth of deals in the past few years and is taking on the challenge of some fierce competition: a newly Energized Coca-Cola campaign. She was every confident with her work and decisions she take for the one of the latest business which operates in 190 countries. According to Michelle Crain, Director of Call center, Inc. and one of the most influential women in the business, she started that women are best in business and she said about the Women Educational Development as “A number of occupations became "professionalized"

through the 19th and 20th centuries, gaining regulatory bodies, and passing laws or regulations requiring particular higher educational requirements. As women's access to higher education was often limited, this effectively restricted women's participation in these professionalizing occupations.

For instance, women were completely forbidden access to Cambridge University until 1868, and were encumbered with a variety of restrictions until 1987 when the University adopted an equal opportunity policy. ” (Article on Women in Business, Michelle Crain, 2005) I also observed during my Internet Research I found that women are leading the way in many countries, but in some countries they are lagging behind men. The inspiration of other women makes them to move forward and achieve new heights.

For example in United States more than 65% of the women work and 12% are running business in the same way if we take Kenya only 14% of the women work, mainly devoted to Agriculture field. The Women in Countries like China, India and Other Asian Countries are developing and there is an increasing statistics of working women. Governments are taking initiatives for Women Development in these countries by launching schemes for working women. The United States Employment Law is totally in favor of women by providing same wage rates, flexible working hours and Maternity leaves.

It is observed in United States that the women as better Credit Score than men. This shows that Women are constantly developing in the society. (United States Women Economics, 2006) The inspiration and Government actions women are excelling and there is lot more to do. The Women in Countries like United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Other European

Countries are fully development and in transition phase. But the Countries like India, China, Pakistan and Other Asian Countries they still developing; Governments are taking active role in Women Development and Empowerment.

UN interference is also making them to work on this issue. Reports and Surveys say that Women in North Korea, Kenya and other African Countries are still facing lot of problems, and there is no aid to rescue them. (UN Women Development Council, 2006 Report on Development of Women). Observation with News Papers and Media the Women in Developed and Developing Countries are facing sexual harassments at work environment. Governments and Companies passed strict rules against the sexual harassment on women, but the strategy didn’t change.

The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2004 shows that there are more than 1500 women killed in United States for Sexual Harassments. In India the working women are sexually harassed and killed, recently three cases are recorded in International companies like HP and Wipro, where Call Center Associates were sexually harassed and killed by the Drivers appointed by the companies, this made companies to take initiative in launching GPRS to the cars that are used to pick and drop women employees. The jurisdictions around the world are fully loaded with sexual harassments cases, which are yet to justify.

When I made a survey with other women on Streets about the Security on Women the Woman told that the women should develop there own security system to protect against men, by waging fight for human rights. Many activists have already started these types of fights to improve the women rights in the

society. Many Women Claim that these types of sexual harassments make women mentally bind to there homes and are not able to work in the environment. Majority of the women said that we are also part of the society and should be respected and treated well is the basic point that should be noted by men.

Observation with Internet Sources on Women in Business I found that Women are leading many International companies with motivation and high decision making skills, Men and Women equally contribute to the development of the economy. Both are now money maker and creators. UN has taken a step forward to help the women in Business by launching a Development center for Women Development, which focuses on women in Business sectors. Training programs are given to women who are interested in starting there own business. In my Internet Research on Women in Business I found that Fortune 500 Companies are managed and operated by many women.

For example: Indra Nooyi. The present CEO of Pepsi Co. and another example: The founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics created a business that has helped some half a million women fulfills their dreams of business ownership. A best-selling author and powerful motivational speaker, Lifetime Television named her the Most Outstanding Woman in Business in the 20th Century. Debbi Fields is one of the greatest Women Entrepreneur she at age of 20, Debbi Fields was a housewife with no business experience, but a great chocolate chip cookie recipe and a dream. Today, Mrs.

Fields Cookies is one of the world's most recognizable dessert franchises, with over 600 stores in the U. S. and

ten other countries. During my Internet Research I found that Cancer is one of the most killing diseases on the world, Dr. Marie Curie is known to the world as the scientist who discovered radioactive metals i. e.

Radium & Polonium Marie Curie contributed greatly to our understanding of radioactivity and the effects of x-rays. She received two Nobel prizes for her brilliant work, but died of leukemia, caused by her repeated exposure to radioactive material. Mary Dixon Kies in 1809 received the first U. S. patent issued to a woman. Kies, a Connecticut native, invented a process for weaving straw with silk or thread. First Lady Dolley Madison praised her for boosting the nation’s hat industry. We have new tools, but it is the health workers on the frontline who make the difference against malaria.

No one should die from malaria. It is unacceptable that hundreds of thousands of lives continue to be lost each year to a disease that has plagued us for millennia. As African ministers of health highlighted at the Malaria Ministerial Conference held last month in Yaoundé, Cameroon, we have the tools to end this disease for good.

Tools like the latest dual active ingredient (AI) nets which are coated with two insecticides, making them more effective against mosquitoes that have built up resistance to standard nets. Other tools include indoor residual spraying, seasonal malaria chemoprevention for children under 5, and intermittent preventive treatment to protect pregnant women from the disease. And now, two new vaccines—RTS,S and R21—are the latest addition to the toolbox. All these tools are most effective when used together as part of comprehensive national malaria control plans.

However, tools alone will not suffice to end malaria. Their success depends entirely on the strength of the health systems through which they are deployed. Ultimately, these health systems rely on a trained and integrated health workforce to reach and serve the communities most affected by malaria.

These are the people on the frontlines, tackling the devastating effects of malaria in their communities. Working together, doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, midwives and community health workers all play a crucial role in fighting infectious diseases and delivering lifesaving prevention and treatment services.

And there is an important gendered angle to consider: The majority of health workers are women. Predominantly nurses, midwives, and community health workers, these women deliver health care to around 5 billion people globally.

During my recent visit to Cameroon, where the entire population of 27 million people is at risk of malaria, I had the privilege of meeting three incredible women leading the fight against this disease.

At the Soa District Hospital, I met with Emily Itondo, a midwife who conducts prenatal visits with women in the community, providing them with malaria prevention medication known as intermittent preventive treatment, or IPTp, and insecticide-treated mosquito nets. When a pregnant woman is infected with malaria, her baby can be born severely underweight, resulting in health complications and even death. Emily explained that she systematically tests pregnant women for malaria during consultations and provides them with the preventive tools they need.

Midwife Emily Otondo conducts 50-60 consultations with pregnant women every week, at the Soa ... [+] District Hospital in Soa, Cameroon. During a pregnant woman’s first appointment Emily provides her with a dual AI mosquito net and preventative medicine to help protect her from malaria throughout her pregnancy.

At the same hospital, Danielle Ekoto, the principal nurse and head of vaccine service, told me about her role in leading the hospital’s vaccine program. Cameroon is the first country in the world to incorporate the RTS,S malaria vaccine in their national immunization program. Nurse Danielle and her colleagues have been vaccinating children aged 6-months with the malaria vaccine since January this year.

Ensuring access to health care also depends on trust; people need to feel safe and that they are being treated with care and dignity. This is why the work of community health workers is so vital.

The immense impact of these connections was evident when I accompanied Amélie Tachifo, a community health worker, on a home visit of one of the families she supports: mum Melissa, father Tomnjong and their two children Gabriella and Tony-Jason.

Amélie has been supporting the family for six years. Melissa refers to her as “my sister.” And I can understand why.

It was Amélie they called at 2 in the morning when Melissa went into labor with her now 3-year-old daughter Gabriella when they couldn’t find anyone else to help and had no means to get to a hospital.

It was Amélie they called when both Melissa and little Gabriella fell ill last year. Melissa was newly pregnant with her second child. Amélie referred both to the local hospital where they were diagnosed with malaria. Gabriella was admitted for four days, but recovered, in part because of how quickly she was diagnosed and sent for treatment.

It was Amélie who ensured that after this terrifying incident happened Melissa received IPTp throughout her pregnancy and that the family was sleeping under a new dual AI mosquito net.

And it was Amélie who told the family about the malaria vaccine. Eight-month-old Tony-Jason was vaccinated at the Soa District Hospital this past February.

Through each of their areas of work, nurse Danielle, midwife Emily and community health worker Amélie provide critical malaria interventions that, together, contribute to a comprehensive and cohesive approach against the disease. Their roles are fundamental to a well-functioning health system and to the overall health and well-being of the communities they serve.

The truth is that the fight against malaria would be nowhere without their tireless efforts.

This needs to translate into adequate support, training, protection and financial compensation for them. For instance, despite their critical role, community health workers are often underpaid or not compensated at all . In Amélie’s case, the small stipend she receives means that she has to take on other employment to supplement her income.

Tools are only one piece of the puzzle. This World Malaria Day, let us not forget that global progress is carried by these heroic health workers on the frontlines—most of them women. The world owes them respect and recognition.

Fans of Taylor Swift often study up for a new album, revisiting the singer’s older works to prepare to analyze lyrics and song titles for secret messages and meanings .

“The Tortured Poets Department” is getting much the same treatment, and perhaps no group of listeners was better prepared than the students at Harvard University currently studying Ms. Swift’s works in an English class devoted entirely to the artist . The undergraduate course, “Taylor Swift and Her World,” is taught by Stephanie Burt, who has her students comparing Ms. Swift’s songs to works by poets and writers including Willa Cather, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth.

On Thursday night, about 50 students from the class gathered in a lecture hall on campus to listen to Ms. Swift’s new album. Mary Pankowski, a 22-year-old senior studying history of art and architecture, wore a cream sweatshirt she bought at Ms. Swift’s Eras tour last year. The group made beaded friendship bracelets to celebrate the new album, she said.

When the clock struck midnight, the classroom erupted into applause, and the analysis began. First, the group listened through the album once without discussing, just taking it all in.

Certain lines, however, immediately caused a stir, said Samantha Wilhoit, a junior studying government — like a reference to the singer Charlie Puth and the scathing lyrics to the song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” Ms. Wilhoit, 21, said.

A line from the song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” in which Ms. Swift sings, “I cry a lot but I am so productive,” also seemed to resonate, Ms. Wilhoit said, laughing.

A smaller group of students, including Ms. Pankowski, stuck it out until the early hours of the morning waiting to see if Ms. Swift would drop additional music. At 2 a.m., they were rewarded with an additional “volume” of 15 tracks called “The Anthology.” Ms. Pankowski said she didn’t go to sleep until hours later.

Speaking with The New York Times together on a video call Friday morning, several students from the class discussed their thoughts on the 31 new songs and brainstormed their final papers, which are due at the end of the month.

“The song ‘Clara Bow’ reminded me of ‘The Song of the Lark,’” Makenna Walko, 19, said, citing the Willa Cather novel that follows the career of an aspiring opera singer, Thea Kronborg. “She’s talking about a girl trying to make it out of her small town and trying to get to Manhattan, and what it’s like to have these big, musical dreams and try to pursue them,” she continued. “That’s a narrative that has shown up a lot in Taylor’s own life, over the course of her own career. In a lot of ways, it’s Taylor’s story, too.”

Lola DeAscentiis, a sophomore, zeroed in on the song “But Daddy I Love Him,” comparing it to the Sylvia Plath poem “Daddy.” She plans to explore the link in her final paper.

“I hesitate to say that the song was anywhere near the genius of Sylvia Plath — no offense to Taylor Swift — but I can definitely see some similarities in the themes, like sadness, depression and mental health,” Ms. DeAscentiis, 20, said. (Ms. DeAscentiis also drew a distinction between being a fan of Ms. Swift and being a devoted Swiftie. She said she identified as the former.)

“The way that Taylor overlays her relationship with the significant other that she’s talking about in the song with the relationship that she has with her father — I think that was very Plath,” she added.

Another student, Ana Paulina Serrano, echoed Ms. DeAscentiis, noting that the class had learned about the genre of confessional poetry. “Is Taylor considered a confessional poet?” Ms. Serrano, a 21-year-old junior majoring in neuroscience, asked the group on the call. In support of her own position, she offered as evidence Ms. Swift’s song “Mastermind,” a track off “Midnights,” in which Ms. Swift reveals herself to have calculated and plotted the outcome of a relationship.

“Sometimes she’s confessing things that we, like, already knew or assumed, but she often seems to feel this need to explicitly tell us,” Ms. Serrano added.

Isabel Levin, a 23-year-old senior studying integrative biology, said she thought Ms. Swift’s delivery on several tracks had a spoken-word quality. She wondered if maybe some of the lyrics had initially begun not as songs but as more traditional poems.

Ms. Swift has said she categorizes her songs by the type of pen she imagines using to write each. A “frivolous, carefree, bouncy” song is a glitter gel pen song, while a fountain pen song might be more “brutally honest,” according to Ms. Swift . Quill pen songs are “all old-fashioned, like you’re a 19th-century poet crafting your next sonnet by candlelight,” she explained during her acceptance speech as songwriter-artist of the decade at the Nashville Songwriter Awards in 2022.

The Success of Women’s Rights Movement Essay

Introduction, causes of success.

The women’s rights movement in the United States has a long history. It started in 1848 when the first women’s rights convention took place in Seneca Falls and the Declaration of Sentiments was signed. They sought the equal treatment of women and men by law and fought for voting rights. If in 1848 only 68 women and 32 men present at the convention, two years later the movement consisted of more than 1,000 participants. The women’s rights movement was successful because they were united, had a strong ideological foundation, and organized campaigns on the regular basis.

Women were united in their movement for equal rights because they understood that unity was their key strength, the only way to succeed. Historically, wifehood and motherhood were considered the only professions of women. Moreover, they were regarded as intellectually inferior to men, as the source of temptation (Meyers, 1994). As the result of women’s united efforts and centralized movement, as early as 1893 women living in Colorado State were granted the right to vote. By 1918, more than 15 states adopted amendments to their constitutions granting females the voting right (Bjornlund, 2003).

American women had a strong ideological foundation that helped them not to give up and continue their movement for equal treatment. In the 19 th century, women began working outside their homes, and in many cases, their working conditions were worse than men’s. Moreover, they were paid less and worked for 12 hours per day in addition to household activities. Women were not the passive recipients of the changes in law and seven generations of women struggled together to affect these changes. The women’s rights movement was highly democratic: they fought for their rights through meetings, petition drives, non-violent resistance, and public speaking (Eisenberg & Ruthsdotter, 1998).

American women did not give and tried to attract public attention to their situation on a continuous basis. Every month in different places the prominent women organized meetings and delivered public speeches to the population. The Seneca Falls women-only hoped that conventions started by them would embrace every part of the United States, but they did not even expect that women’s rights conventions took place every year and attracted so many people that there was not enough space for all of the participants (Macdonald, 2001). Within a short period of time, American women organized the National American Woman Suffrage Association (1890), the U.S. Birth control clinic (1916), the Women’s Bureau of the Department of Labour (1920), the National Council of Negro Women (1935), and many other public organizations (Nash, 1998).

The women’s rights movement was successful only because American women did not agree with the inferior position imposed on them by a male-dominated society. They fought for equal treatment, even though they did not organize conflict and have chosen democratic ways to gain equality. They have united their movement and had the support of the all-female population of the United States. Due to their efforts more than a hundred years ago, modern women all over the world have equal rights with men and this right is protected by law. Today women are involved in all fields of social, political, economic, and even military activities. The women’s rights movement is the perfect example of how a small group of people can change history.

Rise in pregnant women turned away from US emergency rooms, papers show

Cases listed in federal documents raise alarms around emergency pregnancy care, especially in states with strict abortion laws

One woman miscarried in the restroom lobby of a Texas emergency room as front desk staff refused to admit her to the hospital.

Another woman learned that her fetus had no heartbeat at a Florida hospital, the day after a security guard turned her away from the facility. And in North Carolina, a woman gave birth in a car after an emergency room couldn’t offer an ultrasound, and the baby later died.

Complaints that pregnant women were turned away from US emergency rooms spiked in 2022 after the US supreme court overturned Roe v Wade , federal documents obtained by the Associated Press reveal.

The cases raise alarms about the state of emergency pregnancy care, especially in states that enacted strict abortion laws and sparked confusion around the treatment doctors can legally provide.

“It is shocking, it’s absolutely shocking,” said Amelia Huntsberger, an obstetrician/gynecologist in Oregon. “It is appalling that someone would show up to an emergency room and not receive care – this is inconceivable.”

And it has happened despite federal mandates that the women be treated. Federal law requires emergency rooms to treat or stabilize patients who are in active labor and provide a medical transfer to another hospital if they don’t have the staff or resources to treat them. Medical facilities must comply with the law if they accept funding from the federal government Medicare program.

The supreme court will hear arguments next Wednesday that could weaken those protections. The Biden administration has sued Idaho over its abortion ban, even in medical emergencies, arguing it conflicts with the federal law.

“No woman should be denied the care she needs,” Jennifer Klein, director of the White House gender policy council, said in a statement. “All patients, including women who are experiencing pregnancy-related emergencies, should have access to emergency medical care required under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act [Emtala].”

Pregnant patients have “become ‘radioactive’ to emergency departments” in states with extreme abortion restrictions, said Sara Rosenbaum, a George Washington University health law and policy professor, adding: “They are so scared of a pregnant patient, that the emergency medicine staff won’t even look. They just want these people gone.”

A woman who was nine months pregnant and having contractions arrived at the Falls Community hospital in Marlin, Texas, in July 2022, a week after the supreme court’s ruling on abortion. The doctor on duty refused to see her.

“The physician came to the triage desk and told the patient that we did not have obstetric services or capabilities,” hospital staff told federal investigators during interviews, according to documents. “The nursing staff informed the physician that we could test her for the presence of amniotic fluid. However, the physician adamantly recommended the patient drive to a Waco hospital.”

Investigators with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services federal agency concluded that Falls Community hospital broke the law. Reached by phone, an administrator at the hospital declined to comment on the incident.

The investigation was one of dozens the AP obtained from a Freedom of Information Act request filed in February 2023 that sought all pregnancy-related Emtala complaints the previous year and, one year later, received limited results from just 19 states.

Federal investigators looked into just over a dozen pregnancy-related complaints in those states in the run-up to the Roe ruling, but more than two dozen complaints in the months following. It is not known how many complaints were filed last year as the records request only asked for 2022 complaints and the information is not publicly available otherwise.

The documents did not detail what happened to the patient turned away from the Falls Community hospital. Other pregnancies ended in catastrophe, the documents show.

At Sacred Heart emergency center in Houston, front desk staff refused to check in one woman after her husband asked for help delivering her baby that September. She miscarried in a restroom toilet in the emergency room lobby while her husband called 911 for help.

“She is bleeding a lot and had a miscarriage,” the husband told first responders in his call, which was transcribed from Spanish in federal documents. “I’m here at the hospital but they told us they can’t help us because we are not their client.”

Emergency crews, who arrived 20 minutes later and transferred the woman to a hospital, appeared confused over the staff’s refusal to help the woman, according to 911 call transcripts.

One first responder told federal investigators that when a Sacred Heart emergency center staffer was asked about the gestational age of the fetus, the staffer replied: “No, we can’t tell you, she is not our patient. That’s why you are here.”

A manager for Sacred Heart emergency center declined to comment. The facility is licensed in Texas as a freestanding emergency room, which means it is not physically connected to a hospital. State law requires those facilities to treat or stabilize patients, a spokeswoman for the Texas health and human services agency said in an email to AP.

Sacred Heart emergency’s website says that it no longer accepts Medicare, a change that was made some time after the woman miscarried, according to publicly available archives of the center’s website.

Meanwhile, the staff at Person Memorial hospital in Roxboro, North Carolina, told a pregnant woman, who was complaining of stomach pain, that they would not be able to provide her with an ultrasound. The staff failed to tell her how risky it could be for her to depart without being stabilized, according to federal investigators. While en route to another hospital 45 minutes away, the woman gave birth in a car to a baby who did not survive.

Person Memorial hospital self-reported the incident. A spokeswoman said the hospital continued to “provide ongoing education for our staff and providers to ensure compliance”.

In Melbourne, Florida, a security guard at Holmes Regional medical center refused to let a pregnant woman into the triage area because she had brought a child with her. When the patient came back the next day, medical staff were unable to locate a fetal heartbeat. The center declined to comment on the case.

Emergency rooms are subject to hefty fines when they turn away patients, fail to stabilize them or transfer them to another hospital for treatment. Violations can also put hospitals’ Medicare funding at risk.

But it is unclear what fines might be imposed on more than a dozen hospitals that the Biden administration says failed to properly treat pregnant patients in 2022. It can take years for fines to be levied in these cases.

For Huntsberger, Emtala law was one of the few ways she felt protected to treat pregnant patients in Idaho, despite the state’s abortion ban. She left Idaho last year because of the ban, to practice in Oregon instead.

Joe Biden and Xavier Becerra, the health secretary, have both publicly vowed vigilance in enforcing the law.

Even as states have enacted strict abortion laws, the White House has argued that if hospitals receive Medicare funds they must provide stabilizing care, including abortions.

In a statement to AP, Becerra called it the “nation’s bedrock law protecting Americans’ right to life- and health-saving emergency medical care … And doctors, not politicians, should determine what constitutes emergency care.”
