Dissertation vs Thesis: Showdown Time

Before comparing dissertations to theses, it’s useful to first understand what both of these are and what they have in common .

Dissertations and theses are both formal academic research projects . In other words, they’re academic projects that involve you undertaking research in a structured, systematic way. The research process typically involves the following steps :

  • Asking a well-articulated and meaningful research question (or questions).
  • Assessing what other researchers have said in relation to that question (this is usually called a literature review – you can learn more about that up here).
  • Undertaking your own research using a clearly justified methodology – this often involves some sort of fieldwork such as interviews or surveys – and lastly,
  • Deriving an answer to your research question based on your analysis.

In other words, theses and dissertations are both formal, structured research projects that involve using a clearly articulated methodology to draw out insights and answers to your research questions . So, in this respect, they are, for the most part, the same thing.

But, how are they different then?

Well, the key difference between a dissertation and a thesis is, for the most part, the level of study – in other words, undergrad, master or PhD. By extension, this also means that the complexity and rigorousness of the research differs between dissertations and theses.

Dissertations and theses are both academic research projects that involve undertaking research in a structured, systematic way.

So, which is which?

This is where it gets a bit confusing. The meaning of dissertation or thesis varies depending on the country or region of study. For example, in the UK, a dissertation is generally a research project that’s completed at the end of a Masters-level degree, whereas a thesis is completed for a Doctoral-level degree.

Conversely, the terminology is flipped around in the US (and some other countries). In other words, a thesis is completed for a Masters-level degree, while a dissertation is completed for PhD (or any other doctoral-level degree).

Simply put, a dissertation and a thesis are essentially the same thing, but at different levels of study . The exact terminology varies from country to country, and sometimes it even varies between universities in the same country. Some universities will also refer to this type of project as a capstone project . In addition, some universities will also require an oral exam or viva voce , especially for doctoral-level projects. 

Given that there are more than 25,000 universities scattered across the globe, all of this terminological complexity can cause some confusion. To be safe, make sure that you thoroughly read the brief provided by your university for your dissertation or thesis, and if possible, visit the university library to have a look at past students’ projects . This will help you get a feel for your institution’s norms and spot any nuances in terms of their specific requirements so that you can give them exactly what they want.

The key difference between a dissertation and a thesis is, for the most part, simply the level of study - i.e. undergrad vs postgrad.

What is a Capstone Project in College?

The capstone project in college is the apogee, or completion marker, of a student's coursework leading to the culmination of their program with a degree in their chosen field of study. The original definition of a capstone focuses on the actual stone placed at the top of a wall or building, marking the successful completion of the structure. It's a significant and celebrated piece of architecture, considered to be the most important of an entire construction project.

"(Capstone projects are) the apex of all a student's work done throughout their college career," said Dr. Jeff Czarnec , a social sciences adjunct online and on-campus at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). Retired after 23 years in law enforcement, Czarnec served as an associate dean of criminal justice and social sciences at SNHU for nearly a decade. He now leverages his extensive background to teach social sciences, enriching the academic experience with his practical insights. 

When entering a capstone course, there's an expectation that you have all the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful.

You have the opportunity to pick a research topic that is of interest to you and run with it. "After having to write research papers in all of their courses prior to (the capstone), the task is not one to dread, but to enjoy. It is their time to shine as students and to enjoy the journey," MacCarty said.

A capstone course is more than a potential degree requirement. It can serve as an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge mastery and creative thinking, which may help you stand out to potential employers.

What is Involved in a Capstone Project?

Each university, program and instructor may have different requirements — or models — for a capstone project. According to Czarnec, a general design might first include selecting a topic of interest that the instructor will approve. 

Czarnec said that, depending on the program, a capstone may include anything from a video presentation or an architectural model to an art exhibit or short film; however, it almost always includes a paper demonstrating an introduction, theory, evaluation, research and individual issues relevant to the proposal.

"Students are expected to be ready to enter the world as professionals in their field upon completion of the capstone course," said MacCarty.

The time it takes to complete a capstone project usually depends on the course's length. If you're in an undergraduate online program at SNHU, for instance, your capstone course would take eight weeks to complete, Czarnec said. 

Capstone courses are research-based, and you can choose your topic early on, allowing you more freedom to conduct research  independently. Capstone topics usually align with a program's specific disciplines, too.

For example, in the social sciences realm, "our focus is on human behavior and cognition, which may be different from a capstone course in business or STEM," MacCarty said.

Find Your Program

Types of capstones.

There are many types of capstone projects that you could consider, and they vary from learner to learner, Czarnec said. "Some will investigate issues or phenomenon that they are familiar with either professionally, personally or courtesy of a discipline-related source, such (as) a police or human services agency," he said. 

In a nutshell, a rough outline of a capstone, according to Czarnec, may look something like this:

  • Select a topic and have it approved by the instructor
  • Evaluate relevance to the proposal
  • Perform necessary research
  • Present results in the agreed-upon fashion

Czarnec said that if you're looking for a capstone topic, you may consider focusing on an area you're passionate about or you could also try to ask you instructor for some assistance. For example, Czarnec said that he can act as a guide, mentor, editor and research resource for his students to help them focus and narrow their search for a capstone topic.

Are Capstone Projects Difficult?

"Not necessarily," said Czarnec. "It does force you to be efficient and very specific to topic. No fluff. Straight forward. Razor sharp." 

The capstone is more of an opportunity to catch your breath, he said, and to retrace and pull up what you have learned in a more stress-free environment .

"It helps validate students as learners," Czarnec said.

Depending on the major and course requirements, there may be opportunities to connect with outside contacts, not only to assist with the capstone project research and problem statement but also to provide a networking community .

"Not every research project is, nor should they be, the same," Czarnec said. "Everyone has a different approach."

What is the Difference Between a Thesis and a Capstone Project?

A capstone is similar to a thesis in that the starting point involves the strengths needed for a thesis or dissertation work. For example, you may need to consider the skeletal structure of research and form your theory, hypothesis and problem statement.

"While a capstone is certainly a scholarly piece of work and does share some aspects of a thesis, the time and detail that is required of a master's thesis is greater," MacCarty said. 

A capstone paper may be 25 pages, whereas a thesis could be 100 or more. If you choose to further your education beyond a bachelor's degree, the capstone project could be an invaluable tool in preparing for a graduate thesis.

Capstone Projects are About Your Success

Capstones of all programs are leading you to the end game, Czarnec said. The goal is to develop you into a well-rounded thinker who can pull their work together in a coherent, articulate, well-organized fashion while considering the demands of the profession or vocation you're interested in.

The focus and intent of a capstone should be to create an effective device to assess and measure all that you've learned throughout your program in an aggregate fashion so you can demonstrate your life-long vocational skills in a nice, neat package. 

"My goal is for students to leave the program confident about their skills and abilities," said Czarnec.

MacCarty said that capstone courses should be structured to support your success in fulfilling program requirements and allow you the opportunity to showcase your academic abilities and skills gained throughout your degree program.

Social work capstones are graded on a pass/fail basis. Students receive a rubric of objectives and expectations, which includes the number of hours required for a successful capstone. The goals and objectives designed by the student, as well as feedback from the site supervisor also determine the final grade earned. If a student fails the capstone, schools have a grade appeals process. Most programs allow students to retake a capstone course once to earn a passing grade.

What Is a Thesis Like in Social Work Programs?

Master’s in social work programs require advanced field experiences as a thesis. MSW students complete a minimum of 900 hours of field experience, earned through two to four practicum courses, one course per semester. Programs generally offer a seminar course that is completed prior to or concurrently with the final practicum course. Completed individually in a communal setting, practicum students are free to collaborate with other professionals in the field. MSW students may also conduct new research projects or case studies. A paper is often required at the conclusion of the practicum, which may be presented to faculty and students.

Choosing Your Social Work Thesis Topic

MSW students receive hands-on training while developing their social work theses. The social work thesis topics students choose may focus on private practice, clinical work, or organizational development, and often reflect a student’s ultimate career goals. In a thesis program, students must utilize networking skills, professional experience, and receive faculty advisement. Students may rely on previously developed professional connections and networking to develop their field experiences. Graduate programs employ faculty with extensive professional experience. Research and select a program with faculty advisers that benefit your professional development goals.

Completing Your Master of Social Work Thesis

Field experiences introduce students to clinical and professional practice, develops their skills, and practices interventions. MSW students design their two field experiences to achieve two overarching goals: generalist experience and professional development.

A generalist experience runs between 200-300 hours, with any remaining hours completed in a specialized field. Students conduct observations and case reviews during the generalist experience, then design the specialized practicum to develop their professional skills and respond to a thesis topic. The design of your field experience is highly customizable, but should include concrete objectives with opportunities for hands-on experience. Students submit their plan to the the faculty adviser, who then approves their planned social work thesis topic and field experiences. MSW students record their work through completing observation reports, case notes, and approved logs of hours.

Presenting Your Social Work Thesis

MSW students who complete practicum experiences typically do not defend their thesis in front of a panel. You may be required to give a presentation to the faculty and other students in your program, which can include a PowerPoint, other visual aids, and handouts. Graduates may have the opportunity to present their work to the public through the university or a conference.

Programs that focus on research and policy may require the a thesis presentation, but this is uncommon for a master’s program. A panel of qualified faculty and professionals hear the thesis. Following their presentation, thesis candidates must answer questions and explain the applicability of their work to the field. Students should determine if the program they are applying to requires a thesis presentation or field experience report.

How Is a Social Work Thesis Graded?

Social work thesis projects are typically graded as pass/fail. The number of practicum hours are set according to accreditation and licensure requirements; students must complete all hours to pass the course. Requirements are given to students before they begin coursework, with additional grade requirements outlined in the thesis design syllabus. Feedback from field supervisors is also considered. Students who fail their field experience may appeal through the school’s appeal process or repeat the course.

What is a Capstone?

Capstones are final courses that draw upon your entire ALM scholarly training to produce a faculty- or student-directed academic research project worthy of a Harvard degree.

Student-directed capstones require you to come up with a topic and make a case to your research advisor as to why the topic is worthy of investigation. The project represents your academic passion and professional interest. Once the topic is approved, you craft a capstone proposal--a research plan--where you outline the topic, share the background reading you've done to understand the topic, and state the research design and methods.

Faculty-directed capstones are semester-long academic seminars lead by an instructor, who brings together all the key learning outcomes of the field of study in a structured syllabus. The instructor may present a list of topics from which you can choose or you may work on the same project as other students. You could work in a team or on your own.

Prework. Most capstones require you to participate in either a noncredit capstone proposal tutorial or a 4-credit, graded precapstone course the semester right before capstone registration (no earlier). The guided prework in either the tutorial or course sets the foundation for academically strong capstones.

How do I choose between a thesis and a capstone?

Some programs have the option to pursue either the thesis or capstone track., a thesis is the more appropriate choice if:.

  • You want to earn a PhD or other advanced degree later on
  • You want the experience of writing for a publication
  • You want to work individually with a Research Advisor and Thesis Director
  • You are more self-directed, are good at managing projects with little supervision, and have a clear direction for your work
  • You have a project that requires more time (9-12 months) to pursue than can be done in a single class

The Capstone route is the more appropriate choice if:

  • You want to focus on a smaller-scale project that highlights your technical skills to a current or future employer
  • You want to work with a client or supervisor on a real-world project that can address a pressing business need
  • You want more input on your project from fellow students and other instructors;  you prefer to work in a community instead of alone
  • You want more structure to your project, including more internal milestones and due dates

If you’ve been researching doctoral degrees, you may notice that virtually all PhD programs require a dissertation, while some professional doctorates require a doctoral capstone or an alternative doctoral project.

So, what’s the difference between the two?

What do a dissertation and doctoral capstone have in common?

All doctoral programs help prepare students to contribute evidence-based practice in their field. Students learn to apply leadership principles and strategies that promote community support, diversity and individuality in the workplace, and the community.

Completing either a dissertation or a doctoral capstone requires intense preparation and a strong foundation in writing and critical thinking. Both culminate in a final document or project that demonstrates a broadened knowledge of relevant theory and practice. 

What are the main differences between a dissertation and a doctoral capstone? 

The Capella doctoral experience offers a good comparison of the two types of final project.

The Capella dissertation is a traditional five-chapter research document that you’ll develop as you work with a faculty mentor and dissertation committee members. It’s meant to be a work of high-quality academic research that contributes to your field of study.

The doctoral capstone can take many different forms depending on your program, your specialization or area of interest within your subject and other variables. Working with a faculty mentor and committee, you’ll complete a project that offers solutions or improvements to a real-world problem relevant to your field of study.

  NOTE:   Each program uses specific capstone options. Not all options are available for each program.

The capstone thesis is a study conducted by the student. According to the EOP Manual , it “must have a substantial research component, present an original argument, use proper academic conventions, including carefully documented primary and/or secondary sources, and should be at least fifty pages in length [not including front and back matter].”

The creative/applied project is a unique project created by the student. It can be a “discrete project, paper, exhibit, performance, or other appropriate task reflecting the integration of knowledge acquired in academic and professional activities.” (From the EOP Manual )

The practicum option is a 160 hour, intern-like project which the student completes with an organization under the supervision of a professor who is “responsible for directing the intellectual content and activities of the practicum.” This option includes a critical reflection paper, an “integration paper [that is] is generally between 25 and 30 pages and follows a method similar to David Kolb’s experiential learning style as the basis and method for writing the paper.” (From the EOP Manual )

The portfolio option is unique to each program: “Each program specifies the artifacts that make up the portfolio. Students are expected to retain these artifacts as they progress through their program and may be asked to submit these artifacts into a portfolio portal throughout the program. The portfolio contains a substantive analysis that contextualizes each artifact, articulates how the artifact demonstrates mastery of the learning outcome, and evaluates the student’s intellectual growth through the program.” The portfolio option also requires a critical reflection paper that demonstrates that “the student can apply relevant and recent literature to the artifacts and program objectives.” This paper should contain a bibliography of sources consulted and be roughly 50 pages (not including front and back matter). The School of Information’s annual spring poster sessions showcase graduating student’s research and professional experience projects. This was the largest poster session in our school's history and the first time that undergraduates and graduates proudly presented their capstone projects together.

Undergraduate Dean’s Choice Award Winner & Honorable Mention

Dean Eric T. Meyer is pleased to present the Dean’s Choice Award to undergraduate student Michael Chen and Honorable Mention to Courtenay-Dee O'Brien!

“One of the things that really stood out about both undergraduate award winners was their ability to explain not only the details of their projects, which was evident in many of the students I spoke with, but also to help others understand the big picture questions of why the topics were important to them and to the world,” Dean Meyer said. “Whether it is a vision for saving significant amounts of energy using technology tools, or using data to protect elephant populations, the projects tackled big and important issues, and did so in creative ways using the knowledge and skills developed in the iSchool.”

Winner: “Design of Intuitive Visualizations for Residential Heating and Cooling Demands”

Michael Chen worked with the School of Information's Dr. James Howison to design new interpretable ways of visualizing the different temperature and comfort conditions a home faces throughout the year. He simulated hourly data for mock houses in Austin before generating a variety of visualizations, including calendar-shaped heatmaps and time series charts that highlighted the most extreme weather conditions. Used in tandem, this project's visualizations aim to help the viewer intuitively understand what their home would feel like throughout the year, potentially aiding homeowners in their HVAC sizing decisions.

“I really enjoyed combining the data skills and the focus on human-centered design that the iSchool teaches in this project,” Michael said. “It was an engaging challenge to think about how to visualize data that isn't normally communicated - like what a temperature difference actually feels like. I feel that utilizing interdisciplinary approaches, along with an emphasis on how data is conveyed, aligns with the spirit of the Informatics program.”

Michael’s project supervisor, James Howison said, “Michael jumped right in and drove this project from a vague idea to an innovative visualization. Capstones are great opportunities to throw a fun idea up in the air and see what happens; the idea for this one was conceived when we had our HVAC system swapped out. I didn’t even have the data in hand, but Michael found the simulation software and got it up and running. Our iSchool students do a great job with capstones, Michael certainly did!”

Honorable Mention: “From Data to Defense: Mapping Elephant Poaching Trends for Targeted Conservation”

Courtenay-Dee O'Brien’s capstone project addressed the multifaceted challenges of illegal elephant poaching, driven by factors such as ivory demand, corruption, poverty, and criminal syndicates. By integrating data engineering, AI/ML, and geospatial analysis, the project analyzed historical and real-time data to uncover trends and risk factors in poaching incidents. Key findings indicated a strong inverse correlation between illegal carcass counts and both political stability and economic conditions, highlighting the importance of socio-economic interventions in regions with high poaching rates.

“This project has significantly enhanced my expertise in data engineering and data science, strategically equipping me for my forthcoming role as a Data Engineering and Applied AI Analyst at Deloitte & Touche,” Courtenay-Dee said. “Engaging in every facet of the data pipeline—from collection through to feature engineering—has not only honed my technical acumen but also enriched my perspective with interdisciplinary insights across technology, governance, African Elephant conservation, and business strategy. This robust experience is crucial as I step into the evolving landscape of data analytics, ready to tackle complex challenges with innovative solutions.”

Graduate Dean’s Choice Award Winner & Honorable Mention

Dean Meyer is also pleased to present the Dean’s Choice Award to master’s student Utkarsh Mujumdar and Honorable Mention to Madhav Varma!

The Dean recounted, “Both of the graduate student winners had an ability in their posters and their conversation to help others immediately grasp the practical implications of their projects. Utkarsh built an impressive prototype for helping users ask questions about topics beyond simple fact retrieval, and Madhav contributed to designing a system to provide personalized dietary information in a clinical setting. Both projects have the potential to help people in a very direct way.”

Winner: “Designing a Multi-Perspective Search System Using Large Language Models and Retrieval Augmented Generation”

Utkarsh Mujumdar’s thesis project involved designing a multi-perspective search system that employs Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). Multi-perspective search is an information retrieval scenario when the search query focuses on contentious topics that might not have clear factual grounds for an answer, and so the information presented to the user should accommodate the different perspectives on any given topic. The system developed as part of his thesis does so by blending the conversational flow of LLMs with the context-aware retrieval capabilities of RAG.  

Utkarsh said, “An important learning for me during my capstone project was the ability to think about problems from the perspective of a user, while developing and designing a system. It will help me with my future working on applied AI products that are geared towards non-technical users.”

Honorable Mention: “Developing a User Interface for a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) Tailored to Individualized Dietary Interventions, Informed by Behavior Change Theory”

Madhav Varma’s project integrates user experience (UX) design principles with empirical insights from clinical research, specifically in personalized nutrition education. Through comprehensive interviews with clinical researchers and dietitians, alongside mixed methods UX research, it aims to elucidate decision-making processes and educational strategies within nutrition interventions. Anticipated outcomes include user flows and prototypes grounded in behavior change theory, facilitating the delivery of tailored nutrition education to patients by providing Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) with quick access to personalized educational materials. Iterative prototyping, driven by feedback and testing, will refine the interface to align with evolving user needs. Collaborative engagement with field supervisors and exploration of design systems within digital frameworks will ensure cohesive, industry-standard interfaces. This initiative enhances the professional toolkit of UX researchers and designers, fostering an understanding of UX design's role in healthcare.

“The culmination of my academic journey in the form of a capstone project provided invaluable insights into the critical role of User Experience (UX) within the healthcare domain. Delving into the intricacies of designing software solutions for this industry underscored the importance of understanding and navigating the unique challenges inherent in healthcare workflows,” Madhav said. “I became acutely aware of how the fusion of clinical and UX research methodologies can yield innovative technological solutions, enhancing the efficiency of established healthcare practices and workflows.”
