  • Quantifiable Achievements: The cover letter demonstrates the importance of highlighting quantifiable achievements, such as the "45% surge in sales," which provides clear evidence of the candidate's effectiveness in their previous role.
  • Relevant Experience: It mentions the candidate's role and experience at a credible PR agency (Edelman), which is relevant to the job they are applying for, thereby establishing their credibility within the industry.
  • Skills and Certifications: By mentioning "skills, and certifications" without specifying what they are, the cover letter suggests that the candidate is well-equipped for the job and entices the hiring manager to inquire further during an interview.
  • Call to Action: The letter includes a call to action, inviting the hiring manager to discuss the candidate’s background in more detail, which can prompt further conversations and show the candidate's eagerness for the role.

What are the basics of the design or format of your senior account manager cover letter?

To start, here's a reminder for you: the Applicant Tracker System (or software that is used to assess candidate profiles), won't be reading your senior account manager cover letter.

Recruiters enjoy reading senior account manager cover letters with a standardized format that uses:

  • the same font as the resume (e.g. modern ones like Raleway or Volkhov are prefered over the clichéd Times New Roman or Arial);
  • single spacing to keep the content concise and organized (this is all ready for you in our cover letter templates );
  • a one-inch margin to wrap around the text, like in our cover letter builder ;
  • PDF as a file format, as it allows your design (and visual element) to stay the same.

Finally, we can't go on without mentioning the key sections of your senior account manager cover letter.

In the top one-third, make sure to include a header (with your contact information, name, role, and date), a salutation, and an introduction.

Next, follows the heart and soul of your senior account manager cover letter or its body.

End your senior account manager cover letter with a closing paragraph and, if you wish, a signature.

The top sections on a senior account manager cover letter

  • Header: This section includes the candidate's contact information, the date, and the employer's details, setting a professional tone and providing easy access to follow-up contact.
  • Opening Greeting: This personalized address to the hiring manager or recruiter shows attention to detail and respect for proper business etiquette.
  • Introduction: A brief overview that hooks the reader's attention by highlighting years of experience as a Senior Account Manager and a statement on understanding client needs and driving business growth.
  • Body of the Letter: Detailed sections that outline specific achievements, key account management successes, and relationship-building skills that mirror the responsibilities of a Senior Account Manager role.
  • Closing Paragraph: A strong and confident conclusion reiterating the candidate's fit for the role, a call to action prompting an interview, and gratitude for the recruiter's time and consideration.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Proven track record in sales: Recruiters look for quantifiable success in previous sales roles, such as meeting or exceeding targets, to ensure the candidate can drive revenue.
  • Strong relationship-building skills: Essential for creating and nurturing long-term client partnerships, which are crucial for repeat business and referrals.
  • Excellent negotiation and closing abilities: Critical for securing deals and maximizing profitability for the company, showing that the candidate is a strong advocate for the company’s interests.
  • Strategic account planning and management: Demonstrates the candidate's ability to identify opportunities within an account and develop strategic plans for expansion and growth.
  • In-depth industry knowledge: Recruiters seek candidates who have a robust understanding of the specific industry they will be working in, indicating that they can provide valuable insights and solutions to clients.
  • Leadership and team collaboration: Shows the candidate's potential to lead account teams, collaborate across departments, and mentor junior staff, which is important for driving team success and fostering a positive work environment.

The senior account manager cover letter salutation: how to address hiring managers

After covering the format of your senior account manager cover letter, let's look at the salutation.

Back in the day, the cordial "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam", might have worked out fine.

But, nowadays, your cover letter should approach hiring managers on a more personal basis.

So, what to do about your cover letter salutation ?

If you've messaged the recruiters and are on a first name basis or a more formal one, use the hiring manager's name in the greeting (e.g. "Dear Sophie," "Dear Ms. Givens", or "Dear Mr. Everett,").

Always aim to make the effort to find out the name of the hiring manager, who'd be assessing your application. Search on LinkedIn, double-check the advert on the corporate website, or message the brand on social media to find out more about the role.

If you can't find the hiring manager's name (and still want to sound professional), use "Dear HR Team,", "Dear Hiring Manager,", or the likes.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Department] Team,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear [First Name] [Last Name],
  • Dear [Job Title or Department] Hiring Committee,
  • Dear [Company Name] Recruiter,

What to include in those first two sentences, or your senior account manager cover letter introduction

Have you ever wondered what the best way is to present your profile in the senior account manager cover letter introduction ?

There's no right or wrong answer if you're being concise and authentic to yourself.

Some professionals start their senior account manager cover letter by:

  • congratulating the company - focusing on something impressive, whether that's an award, an industry-leading project, or a key event;
  • aligning their passion for the field or industry with the job - if you're enthusiastic about what you do, you'd thus grow your skill set and value as a professional.

What to write in the body of your senior account manager cover letter

Now that you've got your intro covered, here comes the heart and soul of your senior account manager cover letter.

It's time to write the middle or body paragraphs . This is the space where you talk about your relevant talent in terms of hard skills (or technologies) and soft (or people and communication) skills.

Keep in mind that the cover letter has a different purpose from your senior account manager resume.

Yes, you still have to be able to show recruiters what makes your experience unique (and applicable) to the role.

But, instead of just listing skills, aim to tell a story of your one, greatest accomplishment.

Select your achievement that:

  • covers job-crucial skills;
  • can be measured with tangible metrics;
  • shows you in the best light.

Use the next three to six paragraphs to detail what this success has taught you, and also to sell your profile.

Thinking about the closing paragraph of your senior account manager cover letter

Before your signature, you have extra space to close off your senior account manager cover letter .

Use it to either make a promise or look to the future.

Remind recruiters how invaluable of a candidate you are by showing what you plan to achieve in the role.

Also, note your availability for a potential next meeting (in person or over the telephone).

By showing recruiters that you're thinking about the future, you'd come off as both interested in the opportunity and responsible.

No experience senior account manager cover letter: making the most out of your profile

Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their senior account manager cover letter to stand out.

Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.

Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.

Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?

Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.

Key takeaways

We hope this senior account manager cover letter writing guide has shown you how to:

  • Format your senior account manager cover letter with the mandatory sections (e.g. header, greeting, intro, body, and closing) and select the right font (P.S. It should be the same as the one you've used for your resume);
  • Substitute your lack of professional experience with your most noteworthy achievement, outside of work, or your dreams and passions;
  • Ensure recruiters have a more personalized experience by tailoring your cover letter not just to the role, but to them (e.g. writing their first/last name in the salutation, etc.);
  • Introducing your biggest achievement and the skills it has taught you in your senior account manager cover letter body;
  • Write no more than two sentences in your senior account manager cover letter introduction to set the right tone from the get-go.

Account Manager Cover Letter Overview: What To Know To Write A Cover Letter That Wins More Job Offers

What do companies look for when they're hiring an Account Manager?

Companies want candidates with a blend of sales, customer service, communication, and technical skills. They look for individuals with a proven track record of delivering results, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage complex relationships. Employers also value industry knowledge and strategic thinking, along with the ability to build strong relationships with customers.

Your cover letter should show the company that your personality and your experience encompasses all of these things.

Additionally, there are a few best practices you want to follow to write a job-winning Account Manager cover letter:

  • Customize your letter: Start by addressing the hiring manager by name, if possible, and mention the specific account manager role you are applying for. This shows that you have taken the time to personalize your letter.
  • Highlight your qualifications: Emphasize your relevant experience and skills, such as your ability to build and maintain relationships with clients, your experience in sales and account management, and your strong communication skills. Make sure to include measurable metrics and outcomes whenever possible to illustrate your value.
  • Demonstrate your knowledge of the company: Show that you have done your research on the company and explain why you are interested in working there. Mention specific projects, products, or services that you admire.
  • Be concise and clear: Your cover letter should be short, concise and easy to read. Stick to one page and focus on the most important information.
  • End with a call to action: Conclude your cover letter by asking for an interview or expressing your interest in discussing the opportunity further.
  • Proofread: Make sure to thoroughly proofread your cover letter for any grammatical errors or typos. A well-written, error-free letter can make a strong first impression. I recommend using Hemingway App to do this.

Let's dive deeper into each of these so you have the exact blueprint you need to see success.

The Best Account Manager Skills To Include On Your Cover Letter

Keywords are one of the most important factors in your cover letter. They show employers that your skills align with the role and they also help format your cover letter for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

If you're not familiar with ATS systems, they are pieces of software used by employers to manage job applications. They scan cover letters for keywords and qualifications and make it easier for the employers to filter and search for candidates whose qualifications match the role.

If you want to win more interviews and job offers, you need to have a keyword-optimized cover letter. There are two ways to find the right keywords:

1. Leverage The 20 Best Account Manager Keywords

The first is to leverage our list of the best keywords and skills for an Account Manager cover letter.

These keywords were selected from an analysis of  real  Account Manager job descriptions sourced from actual job boards. Here they are:

  • Communication
  • Relationships
  • Development
  • Partnerships
  • Account Management
  • Organization

2. Use ResyMatch.io To Find The Best Keywords That Are Specific To Your Cover Letter And Target Role

The second method is the one I recommend because it's personalized to your specific cover letter and target job.

Example of Skills For Account Manager Resume

Here's how it works:

  • Open a copy of your updated Account Manager cover letter
  • Open a copy of your target Account Manager job description
  • In the widget below, paste the job description and hit scan!

ResyMatch is going to scan the target job description and show you the exact keywords and skills that are relevant for the role and that you should weave into your cover letter.

If you're ready to check it out, grab your target job description and run your first scan here:

To start, paste your target job description (or multiple job descriptions) into the box below:

Scan to help you identify keywords and skills within your target job description.

If you're more of a visual learner, here's a video walking through this whole process so you can follow along:

Personalization is what makes a cover letter stand out. That starts from the very first sentence where you greet the person reading your cover letter! There are two ways to do this well:

1. Use The Hiring Manager's Name

The first, and best, is by including the hiring manager's name. Let's say that you discovered the hiring manager's name from a post on LinkedIn or via an informational interview.

This is the jackpot! All you need to do is use their name in the introduction, like this:

Example of Starting A Cover Letter With The Hiring Manager's Name

2. Use This Formula: To The [Department] Team at [Company]

If you don't have the hiring manager's name, no problem! You can address your cover letter to the team that you're applying to.

For example, if you're applying to for a Product Marketing Manager role at Discovery Education, you might start you cover letter like this:

Example of Starting A Cover Letter With The Team & Company

This shows the reader that this letter has been written specifically for them and the content inside of it will support that.

It's much more relevant and personal than  “To Whom It May Concern!”

3 Tips For Writing A Job-Winning Account Manager Cover Letter

You're off to a strong start! But I've got a few more tips to help you take your cover letter to the next level:

1. Use ChatGPT To Write Your Cover Letter In <30 Seconds

All of these tips and best practices work, but you still have to implement them. Normally, that'd mean you sitting down and spending hours brainstorming ideas, typing, deleting, and typing again, and then feeling absolutely drained.

Now there's a way to work around all of that so you save your best energy for the writing and edits that matter most. Here's how it works:

  • Head to ChatGPT (you'll need to create an account – it's free)
  • Ask ChatGPT,  “Please write me a cover letter for an Account Manager role. The role I'm applying for is [Job Title] role at [Company]. Here is the job description: [Paste Job Description]. And here is my resume: [Paste Resume].
  • Watch ChatGPT write up a pretty darn good cover letter base!

Here's a video of me doing this with a real cover letter if you want to see the steps in action:

Note:  I  do not recommend or advise that you simply copy and paste the content from ChatGPT into your cover letter and submit your application. ChatGPT is great for doing 80% of the baseline work, but you still need to review, revise, and personalize the content yourself.

2. Include Measurable Metrics And Outcomes

Too many job seekers only focus on the actions that they took and not the outcomes that resulted from those actions. As a hiring manager, it's impossible to differentiate between a dozen candidates who were all “Responsible For Managing A Book Of Key Accounts.”

If you want to win, your cover letter should speak to the specific outcomes that you drove in previous roles. That could be:

  • The amount of revenue you drove
  • The number of clients you managed
  • The retention rate of your clients
  • The satisfaction rate your clients shared

These numbers will show hiring teams what you're capable of and make your value crystal clear!

3. Match Your Cover Letter And Resume Design

Quality Impacts Perceived Value - Car Example

They're the exact same car, down to the year, make, and model. The only difference is the way the product was presented. Like I said, quality impacts perceived value.

One of the best ways to boost the quality of your cover letter is to make it look clean, professional, and have it match your resume. That's why the resume templates in our resume builder tool match the cover letter templates in our cover letter builder:

Matching Cover Letter And Resume

If you use both tools to create your cover letter and your resume, your entire application is going to be top notch.

Key Takeaways To Wrap Up Your Job-Winning Cover Letter

Dear [Hiring Manager Name],

When the senior account manager at Abernathy Tech challenged me to raise customer satisfaction by 20% in one year, I didn't think we could do it. The problem was our inefficient requirements-gathering process. It was a dream come true when I managed to realize a 35% customer satisfaction boost. My skills in relationship-building, problem solving, and HubSpot made it possible.

That's just one of the reasons I'm so excited about the account manager position at KQM Systems. I know you need an account manager skilled in requirements gathering, customer communication, and negotiating with vendors to save costs. This position fits my skills, such as:

  • Requirements gathering.  Worked with 5 cross-functional teams to raise customer satisfaction through improved requirements-gathering procedure.
  • Customer communication.  Slashed customer complaints through better communication at all stages of development.
  • Negotiated with vendors  to pass a 20% cost savings to our customers, contributing to 35% customer satisfaction gain.

I'm excited to speak with you about how my skills in relationship-building, teamwork, and problem-solving can help KQM's bottom line.

Best regards,

[Your Name], Account Manager

[Phone Number]

PS—I'm also glad to share how I helped achieve a 32% revenue gain in one year's time.

That has authority.

You should start your Account Manager cover letter by addressing the hiring manager directly, if possible. Then, introduce yourself and briefly mention your current role or most relevant experience. For example, "Dear [Hiring Manager's Name], I am currently an Account Manager at XYZ Company, where I have successfully managed over 50 client accounts in the past year." This not only shows that you've done your research but also immediately presents you as a serious candidate. Follow this with a sentence or two about why you're interested in the role and the company. This will help to show your enthusiasm and understanding of the company's needs.

The best way for Account Managers to end a cover letter is by summarizing their skills and experiences that make them the best fit for the role, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity, and inviting the hiring manager to continue the conversation. For example, "I am confident that my experience in managing key accounts and fostering client relationships makes me a strong candidate for this role. I am excited about the possibility of bringing my unique skills to your team and would welcome the opportunity to further discuss how I can contribute to your company's success. Thank you for considering my application." This ending is assertive, shows eagerness, and opens the door for further communication.

In a cover letter, Account Managers should include the following key elements: 1. Personal Information: Start with your name, address, contact number, and email address at the top of the letter. 2. Professional Greeting: Address the hiring manager by their name if it's known. If not, use a professional greeting such as "Dear Hiring Manager." 3. Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself and state the position you're applying for. Mention where you found the job posting. 4. Relevant Experience: Highlight your most relevant experience as an Account Manager. This could include key accounts you've managed, sales targets you've achieved, or relationships you've built with clients. Use specific examples and numbers where possible to demonstrate your achievements. 5. Skills: Highlight the skills that make you a good fit for the role. This could include communication skills, negotiation skills, problem-solving abilities, or knowledge of specific software or systems. 6. Understanding of the Company: Show that you've researched the company and understand their goals, values, and challenges. Explain how your skills and experience can help them achieve their objectives. 7. Enthusiasm for the Role: Express your enthusiasm for the role and the company. This could include mentioning specific aspects of the job or company that appeal to you. 8. Closing: Thank the hiring manager for considering your application and express your interest in discussing the role further in an interview. 9. Professional Closing: Close the letter with a professional sign-off such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name. 10. Attachments: Mention any attachments, such as your resume or references. Remember, your cover letter should complement your resume, not duplicate it. It's your chance to tell a story about your experience and skills, and to show the hiring manager why you're the best fit for the role.

I was granted increasing responsibilities and hands-on training at Year-Around Tax Service throughout my collegiate career. That position allowed me to utilize my analytical skills through data input of corporate financials, as well as solidifying my public relations abilities by means of constant customer interaction.

Even though my resume provides a summary of my background and experiences, I would like to meet with you in person to discuss any available opportunities within your company. I can be reached any time at. I look forward to hearing from you.

Highlight Communication Skills

Communication is the key to success in any job, especially as an account manager. So, when you’re crafting your cover letter for a position in this field, be sure to point out how you excelled at communicating with clients and team members.

For example: “I was able to understand what my client was aiming for and convey it effectively.” Or “I streamlined internal communication so we could get things done faster.” If possible, include specific examples of how you improved communications within the company or with your clients.

Talk about your past successes

In your cover letter, talk about successful projects you’ve worked on and how they relate to the job at hand. Keep it brief, but make sure that you can show how you’re a great fit for the role. You can also use this opportunity to address potential concerns or questions that hiring managers may have.

Identify the hiring manager

When applying for a job, it’s not always easy to find the hiring manager’s name. But if you know who will be making the decision on your application and cover letter, make sure to address them directly in your cover letter. By doing so, you add an extra personal touch that shows employers you are willing to go above and beyond what is required of applicants.

Proofread your cover letter

Cover letters for account managers must be succinct and compelling. Every word counts, so avoid cluttering the page with unnecessary words or phrases. Take care to proofread your cover letter before submission to ensure that it’s error-free and that you can convey why you are qualified for the position in a brief paragraph.

Hiring Manager

1 Main Avenue

New York, NY 10013

Being an account manager with 5+ years of experience in managing $4m+ worth of digital marketing accounts, I was thrilled to spot an opening at an agency as esteemed as yours. I believe my disposition for going above and beyond to retain clients (+34% customer retention in 2020) and Spanish skills will help MEDIAtors realize your goals of expanding onto the Central & Latin American markets set out in your 2025 Vision.

In my current role as a key account manager at Brandsters, I am entrusted with the most important accounts, grossing $4m+ in revenue each year. I mediate a fully one-stop-shop service providing online and offline advertising, analytics, outreach and presence. Currently, the biggest account there is a company with a range of alcohol brands. For this client, we were able to outperform the 3xROAS goal on a new product launch by 150%, ending up with almost 7.5xROAS. After market and competition research, I have expanded our service catalog to include auxiliary services (i.e. social media moderation, Messenger help lines, etc.) to our clients. This, combined with a more personal and prepared approach towards each client, increased our customer retention by 34% from 2019 to 2020. After implementing improvements to the sales process and lead generation, my accounts’ annual revenue increased 12% (2018).

Furthermore, my competencies slot into your expectations perfectly. According to your 2025 Vision, Central & Latin Americas are your main avenue of expansion, and in addition to all the work experience, I speak fluent Spanish and intermediate Portuguese, and hold a BA in Spanish Studies. I believe my proven track record and language skills make me an ideal candidate to take your 2025 Vision forward.

When would be a good time to schedule a call or an interview for us to discuss how we can increase your customer retention in these uncertain times?

Best Regards,

You can (ac)count that Larry will get the new position.

Let’s see how to write your own cover letter .

How to Write an Account Manager Cover Letter

1. use the professional cover letter format.

When facing clients half the day, and making the numbers work the other half, you’re going to need to pay attention to detail. Your employer will not accept sloppiness or mistakes. On the job, or in the cover letter.

Start with a professional business cover letter format :

  • Use a font consistent with your resume font .
  • Write a three-paragraph cover letter.
  • Set margins at 1 inch.
  • Left-align the parts of your cover letter, and single-space your text.
  • 1-page is always enough when it comes to the cover letter length .

Now let’s decide what things to include in your cover letter .

2. Make a Header With Your Contact Information

You know how to address a business letter, right? Make sure all the data matches your resume header . Beneath, list the city and date the letter was written. Below, enter the details of the person you’re addressing the letter to. If you don’t know who you’re writing to, use LinkedIn, or just call them up.

Make sure you have these details down:

Cover Letter for an Account Manager: Header

[ Your Full Name]

[ Your Job Title ] (Optional)

[ Address ]

[ Phone Number ]

[ Email Address ]

[ LinkedIn Profile ] (Optional)

[ City and Date ]

[ Hiring Manager’s Full Name ]

[ Hiring Manager’s Position ]

[ Company Name ]

[ Company Street Address ]

[ City and Zip Code ]

3. Identify Yourself and the Position

If you’re signing key accounts, you know how to get to the point quickly. Starting your cover letter , introduce yourself right away, list your years of experience and past position, and identify the position you’re applying for.

You don’t have much time to grab people’s attention—so give them a good reason to keep on reading, like listing one or two of the key requirements of the job and supplying a metric that proves your aptitude in this branch. Think achievements , awards, numbers.

Compare against this template:

Account Manager Cover Letter Example: Introduction

Dear  [Hiring Manager’s Name] ,

Being an Account Manager with  [X]+  years of experience and a proven track record in  [Achievement 1 with metric],  I was excited to spot an opening at your company. Having  [Achievement 2 with metric] , and having sizable experience in  [Skill / Achievement 3 with metric] , I believe I will make a worthwhile addition to them  [Target Employer Name]  team and achieve  [something important to the employer] .

4. Tell Them Why They Should Choose You

Honestly, they don’t really care what you can do. They only care how well you can do it. This is why every single one of 2-3 achievements you’re going to discuss in the 120 words of your middle paragraph will be backed up with a metric or something of that sort.

Counting out lists of things you have done and know how to do is redundant in the age of the internet, when everyone can find out how to do anything. Show them how well you can do it and let them start spending the money you’re going to make for them today, in their head.

Sample Account Manager Cover Letter: Second Paragraph

You state that your new account manager must  [refer to the requirements of the job] . As a   [Previous Position Title]   at  [Name of Your Most Recent Company],  I have acquired sizable experience in  [refer to the requirements of the job] , resulting in  [award/achievement/statistic/commendation/success] . I also have  [award/achievement/statistic/commendation] , which allowed the company to  [result] . I believe I have the experience necessary to help  [Target Company Name]  achieve  [the goals or values important to your new employer] .

Expert Hint : Do you need a cover letter? According to HR statistics , almost 50% of hiring managers still expect to see them attached to the resume.

5. Show Them Why You Chose Them

The account manager needs to play both sides—they need to see it from their client’s perspective, but still know everything about his own business and toe the line. You need intimate knowledge of the business to strike the best deals.

Start today. Research the business thoroughly and show that you have a genuine connection and interest in working there. Geneal cover letters won’t cut it. Here's an actionable template:

Account Manager Cover Letter Sample: Third Paragraph

Joining  [Target Organization Name]  would be not only a perfect opportunity for me to grow by benefiting from your know-how and  [what they do] , but also an instant and seamless culture-fit that would benefit everyone as  [something you found out about their values]  is something that is important to me personally.

Expert Hint: In the Marketing Agency Growth Report , 12% of agencies report their greatest struggle to be retaining employees. Show the right culture-fit, researching on LinkedIn and the company website.

6. Ask For an Interview And Close the Deal

Are you a deal-maker or a deal-breaker? Don’t pussyfoot around with lukewarm closers. Ask them to talk to you, on the phone or in an interview, and give them a good reason to want to talk to you.

We suggest to not hold back your strongest achievement or talking point all the way up to here—just in case you lose them earlier. The best account manager cover letters mention a huge achievement in passing, and then tease more information about it in this closer.

Strike the right balance between decisive and humble.

Close your cover letter professionally. Like this:

These 3 Account Manager cover letter examples will provide you with some good ideas on how to format a cover letter, along with the type of message you should be trying to put across to recruiters .

To further understand exactly how you can write a cover letter that will get you noticed, check out our further guidance.

How to write a Account Manager cover letter

Here’s how you can write your own eye-catching cover letter, broken down into simple steps.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When writing your Account Manager cover letter, it’s best to type the content into the body of your email (or the job site messaging system) and not to attach the cover letter as a separate document.

This ensures that your cover letter gets seen as soon as a recruiter or employer opens your message.

If you attach the cover letter as a document, you’re making the reader go through an unnecessary step of opening the document before reading it.

If it’s in the body of the message itself, it will be seen instantly, which hugely increases the chances of it being read.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To build an instant connection with the recruiter reading your cover letter, start with a warm greeting.

It should be friendly but not casual – keeping it professional at all times.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you’ve opened up the cover letter with a warm greeting to start building a relationship, it is time to identify which role you want to apply for.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so you need to ensure you apply to the correct one.

Be very specific and use a reference number if you can find one.

  • I am interested in applying for the position of Account Manager with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 406f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for a junior project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The main purpose of your cover letter is to excite recruiters and make them eager to open your CV. And you achieve this by quickly demonstrating your suitability to the job you are applying for.

Take a look at the job adverts you are applying for, and make note of the most important skills being asked for.

Then, when you write your cover letter, make your suitability the focal point.

Explain how you meet the candidate requirements fully, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider your application.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your CV, you should sign off with a professional signature.

This will give your cover letter a slick appearance and also give the recruiter all of the necessary contact information they need to get in touch with you.

The information to add should include:

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Kindest regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network –  e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Jill North IT Project Manager 078837437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip: To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate documents that you could copy in.

Email signatures

What to include in your Account Manager cover letter

So, what type of information should you write about in your Account Manager cover letter?

The specifics will obviously depend on your profession and the jobs you are applying to, but these are the key areas you should be covering.

  • Your industry experience – Tell recruiters the types of companies you have been working for and the roles you have held in the past.
  • Your qualifications – Highlight your most important relevant qualifications to show employers you are qualified to do the roles you are applying for.
