Whether you’re a longtime comic book aficionado or just dipping your toes into the world of comics (don’t be intimidated! lots of us are nice!), you might be surprised by how many resources there are to read comics online for free. Free and legal, that’s what we like to hear!

Graphite Comics

I stumbled across this site recently by chance and was floored by the amount of comics and graphic novels I recognized from my own TBR — including some, like Steampunk Snow Queen , which I was unable to find through any other legal comic sites. A number of Boom, Valiant, and Dark Horse comics are available on Graphite for free reading. Get started with your free comics reading with Slam! The Next Jam , Divinity , Ladycastle , Lumberjanes , or Goldie Vance .

Blue Hoopla logo https://www.franklinsquarepl.org/elibrary/hoopla/

Got a library card? Well then chances are you have access to an incredible database of comics and graphic novels (not to mention ebooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, and music) from Hoopla. This is one of my personal favorites when it comes to reading comics because the app is so easy to use and has an absolutely massive database of comics and graphic novels to search through. I’m not even going to bother listing suggestions on where to start with Hoopla because chances are if you’ve got a comics TBR list then you’ll find one of your picks here.

Bright Yellow Tapas Logo featuring little food-shaped shadowcreatures riding chicks in black outline https://tapas.io/ (logo images edited into composite on canva)

If you’re experience with reading comics comes primarily from the major publishers like Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, etc., you might not have tried your hand at webcomics. But you should! Independent and up-and-coming creators publish their comics online on places like Tapas.io, giving readers everywhere a chance to fall in love with their work. It’s not uncommon for stories that begin as webcomics to be published in physical form later on, too. Think Nimona , Mooncakes , Fangs , and Heartstopper .

Where should you start? A few of my personal recommendations for great webcomics on Tapas include Cosmoknights for sci-fi fans, Gutless for some mermaid/princess/knight fantasy romps, and Underforest Tales for some adorable slice-of-life comics with a cottagecore aesthetic. You can find lots of recommendation lists for specific genres online like spooky SFF webcomics , LGBTQ webcomics , and webcomics for newcomer s. You can also sort comics by genre to find exactly what you’re looking for on the Tapas app/website. Basically what I’m saying is, what are you waiting for? Go on over and start exploring.

Marvel: Get Started With Free Issues

Red and White Marvel Text Logo next to the phrase

Get access to first issues of a number of Marvel comics for free over on this section of Marvel’s website. If you’re looking for an introduction to Marvel series, this could be a good place to start. Certainly not comprehensive, but you can find a number of great issues of Immortal Hulk , Uncanny X-Men , Shuri , The Might Thor , The Life of Captain Marvel , and Venom just to name a few. Not as comprehensive as some of the other sites and apps mentioned on this list, but if you’re a Marvel fan it’s still worth checking out.

DC Universe Infinite

Blue DC Universe Infinite Logo https://www.dcuniverseinfinite.com/collections/free-to-read-row

Under the “Free to Read” section of DC Universe Infinite, you can find issues new and old releases alike. The list of available comics seems to change, so keep an eye on the site to see what’s available. Right now you can check out the first issue of Sweet Tooth as well as CatWoman/Tweety and Sylvester . It may not be a vast selection, but hey it’s free!

Barnes & Noble Free NOOK Ebooks

Forest Green Barnes and Noble Logo https://dispatch.barnesandnoble.com/content/dam/ccr/social/BN_facebook_1200x630.jpg

Exactly as advertised: this is a section of the Barnes & Noble website where you can find a selection of their nook ebook comics and graphic novels available for free. That’s not a bad deal! A surprisingly large number of DC works are on offer including Superman Smashes the Clan , Supergirl: Being Super , and DC Universe Rebirth Batman . Other imprints like IDW and First Second appeared under the Graphic Novels & Comics Ebooks tab. Most of the downloads are just sneak peaks or previews, but others include an issue or two so it’s definitely worth checking out. You just have to be willing to do some scrolling to find the hidden gems.

Vibrant Green Web Toon Logo https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.naver.linewebtoon&hl=en_US&gl=US (edited in canva)

Even more free webcomics to keep you busy and entertained! Like Tapas, WEBTOON can be accessed through the web or through an app and boasts a variety of incredible comics you can read online for free. Be sure to check out Lore Olympus , which is also being published by Del Rey Books later this year.

Digital Comic Museum & Comic Book Plus

Yellow Comic Book + Header Image https://comicbookplus.com/ (edited in canva)

I’ve grouped these two together because though they may contain slightly different content, their selection is aimed at the same thing: to provide access to a huge variety of Golden and Silver Age comics in the public domain. Will you recognize most of these titles? Probably not. But if you’re looking for some lesser-known vintage comics reading or in search of a particular out of print issue, you might just find what you’re after here.

Comixology Free Comics

Teal Blue Comixology

Although Comixology is a paid comic subscription database through Amazon, the app also offers a number of comics and graphic novels for free download. A quick perusal revealed a number of gems like Lady Mechanika , Black Panther , Faith vol 1 , and The Walking Dead available for free.

Did I already mention how useful it is to have a library card? In addition to the comics and graphic novels you’ll find on the shelves at your local library, most libraries also provide patrons with a number of other apps and databases you can access from the comfort of your home. Like Hoopla, Libby is an app offering countless ebooks, audiobooks, and comics to check out through your phone. You can even save and tag titles you want to read later for easy searches.

The selection changes based on the specific database used by your local library, but every single one I’ve used has kept me entertained with great new (and old) comics and graphic novels to read. And it’s all available for free! Thank goodness for libraries.

These are some of my favorite resources to read comics online for free. They’ve served me well over the years, and now I hope they’ll help you dive even deeper into the world of comics and graphic novels, too. Happy reading!

Screen Rant

9 best websites to find free comics.

While comic book movies dominate the box office, it can still be hard to find the right comics. With these sites, there's no fee to read!

The Batman , Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , and  Thor: Love and Thunder  are all among the ten highest-grossing films of 2022, but comic book movies have been the biggest cinematic blockbusters for more than a decade now. That popularity has led to renewed interest in comics.

For many fans who wish to get into comics, however, it can be a daunting task, between decades of continuity and the expense of buying comic books in the first place. Luckily these websites allow readers free access to comics both classic and contemporary.

The easiest way to explain the website/app Webtoon for non-users is that it's like YouTube for comics. While free to any and all users, and allowing for accounts to follow favored creations, there is a paid tier, as well as advertisements on the free site. Some of this revenue is shared with creators, although also like YouTube, it's lucrative for only the most popular creators.

The most well-known indie webcomic from the site is probably  Lore Olympus , which retells the myth of Persephone and Hades in a modern setting. Not only did it win an Eisner Award (a first for a Webtoon work ), but it's also received a trade paperback release. The website's massive user base means that the comics offered are so diverse that every viewer can find something to enjoy.

Archive of Our Own

Also known as "AO3," the website Archive of Our Own is a haven for fan-created works, not only boasting a massive collection of fan fiction but also artwork, and, most importantly, comics. AO3 is a place for those who wish to express their fandom in art.

Star Wars has inspired amazing fan art , for example, and one of a plethora of great  Star Wars fan comics on the site is  Our New Hope , which imagines an alternate universe where Ahsoka Tano trains Luke Skywalker. But that's just one example; pretty much any popular media franchise has fan comics on the site. For those who want a deep-dive "What if...?" of their favorite universe, this is a great stop.

Comic Book Plus

Nearly all of the best comic-book debuts in the Golden Age, like Batman , are still protected by copyright. However, because comic books were a booming business during that time, there were hundreds of comic books published between the 1930s and 1950s, many of which didn't have their copyright renewed.

Those can all be found on Comic Book Plus , a donor-supported website dedicated to preserving all comics now out of copyright. Viewing works on the website is free, but if a user has an account, they can download the scans in .cbz format. With over 40,000 books and high-quality images, Comic Book Plus offers the public-domain work of pioneers like Jack Kirby, Al Williamson, John Prentice, and countless others.

A hosting website designed to help creators build a comic-hosting site with ease and for free, ComicFury  also catalogs webcomics created using its tools. It acts as both a cataloger for those looking for comics as well as a handy resource for those looking to create their own portfolio outside of the major comics websites and perhaps launch the next best indie comic series of all time .

ComicFury's nature as a host means that those who create under its umbrella are generating all kinds of content for people to enjoy, from different styles and genres. On top of this, the general website hosts a forum for fan posts independent of the comics themselves, giving it a real nostalgic '90s and '00s feeling missing from mainstream websites, where the commenting is streamlined and tied to content.

Internet Archive

The Internet Archive is perhaps most widely known for its mission of providing archived versions of the Internet for the reference of all visitors to the site. It also, however, aims to act as a digital library, and it is as part of that mission that its  Comic Books and Graphic Novels  repository exists.

Near the top of its nearly 90,000 results is a collection of the early adventures of Captain Marvel, who shares the name with Marvel's character  but now goes by Shazam under his DC stories to avoid trademark infringement. Like Comic Book Plus, Internet Archive helps keep a record of comics history, and does so along with its other goals. It's less geared toward comics than Comic Book Plus, but its collection is larger.

DeviantArt specializes not in comics, but in art in general, whether based on a pre-existing franchise or on an original concept of the artist. While incredibly welcoming and intuitive for visitors to use, DeviantArt also acts as a kind of digital gallery for artists to show off their work.

The website's community-oriented design is what makes it a great stop for artists who not only want to post their comics, but interact with fans and other creators as well. For anyone who wants to find comics on the site in particular, however, the best place to start is the convenient Comics page devoted to this very topic. Fan works are more popular than originals on the main page, but not totally dominant on the site.

An up-and-comer in comparison to Webtoon and Archive of Our Own, Arkhaven boasts nearly 8 million views to the website since it was launched, a respectable number that will no doubt continue to grow as long as the site remains active with compelling creators.

View counts vary between tens and thousands, depending on the comic, but lack of popularity isn't always a marker of lower quality. Like most other user/creator-oriented comics websites, it's built around engagement with the material. There are also preview images of each comic or comic installment that give viewers an excellent glimpse into what the style, and often the tone, of the comic involves.

There's one massive advantage to Epico when it comes to creators connecting with readers, and vice versa: Epico Comics is dedicated to helping creators make their comics available in many languages, which also means it's instantly accessible for non-English readers around the world. More stories being available to more people is always worth celebrating.

Related:  10 Best Indie Comic Books, According To Ranker

It's also very welcoming for new users, allowing for navigation between genres and other possible filters right on the front page, making it easy for anyone to find a story that fits with their interests. Epico currently boasts a dozen LGBTQ+ comics alone, but there's always room for more if readers wish to become artists themselves.

Digital Comic Museum

For 12 years now,  Digital Comic Museum has provided access to public-domain Golden Age comics, a mission that led to  Screen Rant doing a full write-up on the site back in 2020. It's very similar to Comic Book Plus, except a free account is required before access to the full books is granted, whereas on CBP viewing doesn't require an account.

DCM's archives are also likewise maintained by fans with access to the originals who can provide the scans to begin with. For those interested in comics history and who wish to take a look back, but can't find a comic book on Comic Book Plus, DCM is an excellent secondary resource. It's the privilege of seeing these historical pop-culture documents, though, which is the real treat.

The Best Free Comic Book Sites and Apps in 2023

You don't need a subscription to read some of the best comics online..

Rosie Knight

Comics have been bringing joy to people for over a century, but how we read them is always  changing. Whether it was the change from buying comics at newsstands to having a pull list at your local comic shop, reading single issues and transitioning into picking up trade collections or graphic novels instead, there's always been many ways to enjoy comics. Now thanks to the internet there are even more ways to find new favorites and many of those spaces also offer the ability to read comics for free! From library apps to comics companies there are a ton of places to get your comics fix without paying a penny and we've curated a list of the ten best ones here!

best comic book websites free

The easiest to navigate — and most used — service on our list is Webtoon . The app and desktop version of the platform are great and feature an unmatched selection of free comics. While you won't find all of your standard comic shop heroes here, Webtoon offers stories in all genres, with over 1 million titles to explore. Fantastic horror comics that have inspired hit Netflix shows like Hellbound sit alongside delightful romance smashes like Lore Olympus, and DC Comics biggest hit in years Wayne Family Adventures originated here just like the now New York Times bestselling fantasy Lore Olympus. Webtoon has revolutionized the way people access and make comics and it is completely free. While users can pay to read extra chapters or new entries quicker than usual, you can use Webtoon and access its massive catalog without ever spending a cent. As well as the great selection you'll quickly lose yourself in the platform's infinite scroll format that allows you to easily read comics on your phone or iPad.

best comic book websites free

Our next recommendation is the brilliant library app Hoopla . The only caveat is that you will have to get or have a library card — which you can get at your local library or online — but it's a worthwhile effort for the massive catalog of comics, audiobooks, and novels you can access. Along with iconic series like Invincible and collected editions of Y the Last Man , Hoopla also offers up weekly new comics from publishers like Archie Comics and IDW. Their vast library includes thousands of books that are super easy to read on your phone or tablet. Hoopla also has an impressive movie catalog of on demand films and if you get a library card for Hoopla you can access other video rental services like Kanopy. When it comes to scope and selection there's no better free way to keep up with your favorite comics than Hoopla.

best comic book websites free

The Viz website is a treasure trove of free comics offering the opening chapters of an eclectic array of beloved Shonen Jump and Viz titles to read. The site currently offers access to a ton of their biggest manga including My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, One Punch Man, The Legend of Zelda, Assination Classroom, Choujin X and many more. They also have a great selection of seinen and shoujo series available too like Maison Ikkuko, Skip・Beat!, and Fushigi Yügi. This is a really easy way to try out new series or revisit old favorites before deciding whether or not you want to commit. And the interface is really easy to navigate on the desktop. If you prefer to read your comics on an app Viz also has an app that allows you to read free chapters that includes over 10,000 comics but access to that full catalog will run you $1.99 a month. But you can currently get a free seven day trial before subscribing letting you read all those sweet hits.

Shonen Jump

best comic book websites free

Weekly Shonen Jump was a trailblazer in the manga app game with their app launching with an impressive $1.99 price tag. Now it costs $2.99 a month, but the reason we're bringing it up here is because if you download the app you can access multiple chapters for free without a paid subscription. The great thing about this app — and the Viz one — is that it updates weekly with new chapters. Titles like Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Dragon Ball Super, and One Piece are all available on the same day that they release in Japan, and if you want to know some of the free comics you can access they include smash hits like Chainsaw Man, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Kaiju No 8 and all have multiple chapters available to free members.

best comic book websites free

Though you might not realize it, the Marvel website doesn't just have in-depth editorials and explainers about your favorite heroes, it also features a selection of free comics you can read. While the titles are far harder to find than on the Viz site, if you're a keen lover of Spider-Man, the X-Men , and other Marvel heroes it's worth the google search to find them (we of course have linked to the correct page above). Right now you can read almost fifty free Marvel comics that run from exciting number ones like Venom, Giant-Size X-Men and Thanos to Free Comic Book Issues and even entertainingly weird promotional books the company has made for licensors and corporations like Lexus and Ford. Though it's not an extensive collection there are some great titles here that can help you get to know some of your fave heroes a little better.

DC Universe Infinite

best comic book websites free

The DC Universe membership gives you access to thousands of comics for $7.99 a month. But what you might not know is that the desktop version of the site also allows you to read Free Comic Book Day issues from the publisher. The lineup of free comics changes but currently they have a selection of 13 books you can read including Batman, Suicide Squad: King Shark, and Wonder Woman: Rebirth. It's a small selection but definitely worth checking out if you love the infamous villains and beloved heroes on DC's roster. Plus if you want to read more they currently offer a seven day free trial that allows you access to the entire catalog!

Dark Horse Comics

best comic book websites free

Another unexpected place that you can find some great single issue digital comics is the Dark Horse website . Their free comics hub currently boasts over 100 comics , which is more than both of its big two competitors. That library includes titles like Hellboy, Mass Effect, Overwatch, Umbrella Academy, and Stranger Things. More akin to the Marvel library this includes Free Comic Book Day books alongside regular issues and tie-ins. The only catch is that you need to make a free account to access the books, it's definitely worth it though as you can actually download the issues to read offline as well as just reading them in the browser.

Barnes & Noble

best comic book websites free

One of the most well kept secrets when it comes to legal ways to read free comics is the Barnes & Noble website . If you download the Nook app to your favorite device you can download and access almost 1000 comics spanning the gamut from fantasy manga to DC superheroes. Whether you're looking for YA comics like Raven Loves Beast Boy and The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero's Journey or full issues of series like Batman and Countdown to Infinite Crisis, Barnes & Noble has a surprisingly eclectic collection. And if you want manga then you'll be happy with the extensive supply of lesser known titles that you can access for free.

best comic book websites free

There are 100s of free comics to read on comixology though to find them you'll have to search "Free Comic Book Day" once you're on the site. The good news is that not only do they have an extensive collection of FCBD books including titles from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and more but you'll also find other gems hidden in the results. Some of the current standouts include Marvel Voices #1, the first appearance of in Detective Comics #27, Fatale #1, and Chrononauts #1. Just make sure that you're "buying" the ones that don't say Kindle Unlimited underneath. Comixology also means that you download the comics and can read them offline. Though it is a little bit more work you can build an impressive library of digital comics through Comixology.

best comic book websites free

Our final entry takes us back into the web comics space. Tapas has a ton of original comics by a variety of independent creators, and while like Webtoon they put some chapters behind a paywall you can generally explore and read most of the titles and chapters for free. Some of the most popular series there right now include The Witch's Throne, Torte and Lacey, and The Beginning After the End. While you're not going to find characters you already know here you may well discover some new favorites and expand your comics reading horizons.

15 Best Sites to Read Comics Online for Free

Comics are a world of fun to read. They can transport you to different worlds and universes, telling stories that make you either laugh or cry or both. Regardless of what genre you’re into, comics are a beautiful experience to read. They give you a sense of visual wonder and tell stories by showing, not telling, through masterfully drawn art.  However, ever since the dawn of the digital age, comic books have come a little out of fashion. People turn more often to their phones, laptops, and tablets, nearly abandoning print media altogether. Does this mean we have to live in a world without comics? No, sir. Just like how many things adapted to the digital age, so did comics. Not only did comics adapt, but they actually took advantage of the digital platform. They’re more accessible now than ever, as you can easily read comics online for free.

15 Best Sites to Read Comics Online

If you struggle to find out where to read comics online, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve listed the best websites to read comics online all for free! Check out our list below:

1. Amazon Best Sellers

Amazon Best Sellers read comics online

I bet Amazon’s not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of reading online comics. However, they’ve already diversified into many other services—movies, books, music—that it’s really no surprise they now offer comics. What’s more surprising is how many comics Amazon Best Sellers offers for free!

To find their free comics, go to the “Comics and Graphic Novels Best Sellers” list on Amazon. From there, you can browse their selection under “Top 100 Free” to freely read comics online. Amazon also has a great feature for filtering your searches. Filter by genre, author, and many more to find the comic book you want. The selection is also updated hourly so you can check back anytime to see what’s new.

2. Comic Book Plus

Comic Book Plus read comics online

Are you a fan of Golden and Silver Age comic books? Then look no further than Comic Book Plus. It’s got all the goodies: pulp fiction, fanzines, non-English comics, magazines, newspapers, adverts, booklets, posters, and even coloring books. The site’s interface might look a bit dated but their comics are not. They’ve got a wide (and still growing) selection of titles so you can read comics online to your heart’s content. You don’t even have to sign up or subscribe to get started. Just go to comicbookplus.com to browse their wide selection of comics.

3. ComiXology

ComiXology read comics online

If you want to read comics online, ComiXology is certainly the place to be. They’ve got a wide selection of titles from Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse to mangas, indie comics, and more. It’s a great place to start if you were planning on digging into some Marvel or DC lore.

Be warned, however, that ComiXology mainly functions as a paid online comic store. Many issues will require payment, but they’ve also got quite a few titles that are free. They’re also tough to beat with a well-designed mobile app for on-the-go viewing.

DC Kids

If you’re a DC fan, you’re sure to have fun while you read comics online via the DC Kids website . It’s designed specifically for the younger generation so it’s a great starting point for your kids to read comics.

If you’ve been following DC’s animated releases, you’ll know they’re very good and their online comics are just as entertaining. While the number of titles isn’t as many as other websites, all of the ones on-site are keepers. However, not everything is for free so you’ll have to sort out the titles that are. Still, it’s a great place to read comics online for free so make sure to check it out.

5. Digital Comic Museum

Digital Comic Museum

Many sites that allow you to read comics online offer more modern, recently released comics. However, some people want to read older comics from ages past, but not many offer them anymore. Classics from the 30s, 40s, and 50s can be tough to find and that’s why Digital Comic Museum was born.

Modern comics do have their strengths, but there’s something different about reading the classics. Transport yourself to the Golden Age of comic books and read original titles like Captain Marvel. Through these precious beauties, you can see how stories were told back then and how art and storytelling have changed.

6. DriveThru Comics

DriveThru Comics read comics online

Another site where you can read comics online is DriveThru Comics . Even though Marvel and DC comics are absent, they’ve still got a wide selection of comics you’re sure to love. In fact, the bigger competitors of Marvel and DC are here. If you’re a fan of Top Cow, Aspen Comics, and Valiant Comics, you should feel right at home with DriveThru Comics. Moreover, the website is fairly easy to navigate with filters for genres, publishers, formats, etc.

The downside to DriveThru Comics is that it isn’t totally free. Most of its initial issues are free, but their succeeding issues are not. If you like a comic’s first issue, you have to purchase the rest if you want to continue.

7. Get Comics

Get Comics read comics online

Are you a fan of both Marvel and DC? Then one of the best ways to read their comics is GetComics.info . It’s got a wide selection from both companies plus other comics from smaller publishers. Browse for all the comics that you know and love, and then start reading!

Apart from the selection, the website is pretty clean and simple to navigate so you shouldn’t have problems. You can also freely download the comics for offline viewing with no hidden purchases. Just head over to the site and start enjoying the wonderful world of Marvel, DC, and many more.

8. GoComics

GoComics read comics online

Not all comics have to have long narratives and epic battles like Marvel or DC’s superhero comics. Sometimes, short-form comics with slapstick and sarcastic humor is all you need to enjoy a good comic day. Thankfully, there’s a site where you can find just that: GoComics .

While GoComics offers both free and paid subscriptions, you’re really not required to go for the paid subscription. You can sign up for a free account and browse their wide selection of cartoons and comics. They have both lesser-known comics and more popular ones like Garfield, Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, and Dilbert. It’s the best place to unwind and read comics online without any complexities.

9. KissManga

KissManga read comics online

If you’re a big anime and manga fan, chances are you’ve heard of KissAnime before. It’s a website where you can freely watch anime to your heart’s content. However, did you know that KissAnime has a cousin? Yes, that’s right. With KissAnime’s cousin, KissManga , you can read mangas as much as you want.

KissManga has a wide variety of mangas you can read. They’re even updated with recent releases for ongoing titles. You can also browse mangas via their list or search by genre or status (completed versus ongoing). No doubt this website will be the number one for manga fans out there.

10. Marvel Unlimited

Marvel Unlimited read comics online

Who could forget one of the biggest publishers in the industry? With Marvel Unlimited , you can read comics online under Marvel’s vast selection of titles. However, this website is mainly a paid-for service. A monthly or annual subscription will give you access to over 25,000 comics.

Given Marvel’s reputation, Marvel Unlimited as a mostly paid service is unsurprising. Even so, Marvel does have a few comics under its belt that are listed for free. Plus, if you’re a Marvel fan, you’ll probably want to view their lesser-known titles, too.

11. Newsarama

Newsarama read comics online

It’s great if you can read comics online for free, but some people do want a more immersive experience. What better way to do that than to read with a community? Newsarama offers just that, especially for sci-fi enthusiasts.

Of course, Newsarama does offer free comic books online. It has a good selection, but it isn’t nearly as extensive as other websites. However, it does make up for that by being a great place to discuss theories. After all, one of the most fun parts of reading comics is getting into the narrative’s lore and mysteries. Furthermore, the website goes deeper into sci-fi with related news and stories.

Tapas

One of the best things to come out of comics’ transition to digital media is probably exposure. Gone are the days when big publishers were the only ones in the spotlight of the comic book industry. As digital comics grew, so did the number of comics made by indie creators. Not only that, but they’re also actually being read and given proper credibility through websites like Tapas . In fact, many titles on the platform have already grown. If you’re familiar with Erma Comic, it started on Tapas and grew to have a graphic novel and short film.

Huge comic fans are sure to get excited when they discover sites like Tapas. It’s a pretty innovative website with both premium and free comics. You can browse their wide selection of Tapas originals or check out the many indie user-uploaded titles. It’s also easy to find comics as you can filter by genre, free, premium, trending, fresh, and more. However, do note that some comics here have an unconventional format. Many comics on the platform are read through regular pages but some are read via top-down scrolling. If you can get used to it, Tapas is a great site to read comics online for free.

13. The Internet Archive

The Internet Archive read comics online

Another way to read comics online for free is The Internet Archive . While the website may not have mainstream titles, that doesn’t mean its comics aren’t good. You can find great stories on the site, especially if you’re a manga fan. Browse through the thousands of comics within their library and search via many different filters. The only downside is that the naming scheme is a bit clunky so it can be difficult to navigate. Otherwise, The Internet Archive is a great website to satisfy all your comic cravings.

14. View Comic

View Comic

If you’re hungry to read comics online from major publishers like Marvel, DC, Vertigo, and Image, check out View Comic . There’s a lot of comics and famous titles for you to eat up and enjoy.

View Comic’s interface is simple and clean. However, it may be too simple for some people since all you can do is search for titles. That can be off-putting for some who want to filter by genre, but its wide selection may make up for that shortcoming. Plus, there’s no sign-up or registration required for viewing comics. Just head to their website and you’re good to go!

15. Webtoon

Webtoon

Another great website to read comics online is Webtoon . It’s similar to Tapas in that it features both original titles and self-published comics by the platform’s users. However, one of its key distinguishing factors is that majority of the webtoons are top-down scrolling types. This means that while it’s an okay experience to read on-site, you’ll get the best experience when reading on mobile. If you can get used to this new medium, then you’re in for a world of wonder.

Webtoon features an ever-expanding library of comics you can binge. They have a wide array of genres, too. From romance and drama to sci-fi and fantasy, all the way down to horror and thriller. It also has innovative features with some comics having GIFs, music, and special effects for an immersive reading experience.

Webtoon strives for weekly updates per comic and aims to fill every day of the week with a comic update. If you’re subscribed to multiple ongoing comics, you can read multiple comic episodes per day and be entertained week-long. There are no catches, either, since it’s all for free. However, you can unlock episodes earlier by paying for fast-pass but it isn’t required.

Final Thoughts

Comics don’t have to phase out just because people have gone digital. In fact, some online platforms have rendered comics more accessible than ever. With the use of ads and many other money-making methods, comics can even be read for free. Best of all, you don’t even have to stick to only one website. Since they’re free, you can try all of them and binge read to your heart’s content.

1. Read Comics Online

This site offers a wide range of free comics online , all from Marvel and DC to X-Men with other intriguing comic series, that will appease the comic book junkie inside you. Get some killer Batman and Robin as well as Deadpool comics here. They even have Dark Horse(the comic books that brought in Hellboy), Marvel, and other super comic collections worth your time. Then again, watch out for the ads. 3. ComicBook+

ComicBook+ is a gem that is more precious than ruby and emerald; for they showcase both golden and silver age comics in the public domain . It is a great resource for comic books fan, graphic designers, and historians; because they comprise some rare sections of the genres that are solely devoted to fanzines, pulp fiction, non-English comics, newspapers, magazines, adverts, booklets, public information posters of USA, even coloring books.

Though the publishers released the complete quests of the ElfQuest series in a collected edition, you can always go read comics for free online. 5. GoComics

9. Webtoon Okay, let’s get down to business. I can ramble on and on about Webtoon. It is the best site/app to read comics for free. It is a home for all talented artists with diverse art styles, cultures, or perspectives to showcase their work. The Best Free Comic Book Sites and Apps in 2024

Check out these places to read free comics online.

From library apps to comics companies there are a ton of places to get your comics fix without paying a penny and we've curated a list of the ten best ones here for 2024!.

Each of the sites and apps below offer some sort of version of free comics and graphic novels you can read online.

best comic book websites free

The site currently offers access to a ton of their biggest manga including My Hero Academia , Demon Slayer , One Punch Man, The Legend of Zelda, Assination Classroom, Choujin X and many more.

See more of the best free manga websites .

best comic book websites free

The lineup of free comics changes but currently they have a selection of 13 books you can read including Batman comics , Suicide Squad: King Shark, and Wonder Woman: Rebirth.

What's The Best Site for Free Manga?

Although there are quite a few places to read free manga online, the absolute best site is Viz.com . It's a great place to get access to free My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, One Punch Man comics. Our other recommendation would be Shonen Jump, which allows you to access free chapters when you buy the app.

Android Police

These are my favorite places to buy digital comic books for my tablets and e-readers.

There’s more to online comics than just Amazon

Even though Amazon wasn’t the first to start selling e-books, ever since it released the Kindle, getting ahold of a digital copy of a book has become a trivial matter. This is especially true because online e-book retailers have largely homogenized in the past 10 years, meaning that the big websites have mostly the same books available at mostly the same prices — especially when it comes to best sellers.

The same thing, however, cannot be said for buying comic books and manga. Not only does availability vary considerably between retailers, so too do the price and the file size. So where should you be shopping when you want a new digital comic book? Additionally, which awesome Android tablet should you be reading it on?

Is 8GB still enough storage for an e-reader in 2024?

Big online bookstores.

The best place to find comics online is unquestionably at the biggest online bookstores. The sheer volume of content they offer is reason enough to start your shopping with them.

Amazon / ComiXology

ComiXology was the one-time pinnacle of digital comics shopping, and in a way, it still is since its acquisition by Amazon back in 2014. Amazon’s catalog is unbeatable, but because it only sells digital content in its proprietary format, its file sizes tend to be quadruple that of its competitors. For instance, if you buy Watchmen on Amazon, you’ll only pay $9.50, but the file will be 1.4 GB, whereas other retailers might offer it for more, but the file size will come in at around 250 MB.

Barnes & Noble and Kobo

In the world of online bookselling, Barnes & Noble and Kobo are runners-up to the behemoth that is Amazon, but each has a respectable selection of comics and manga. The edge between the two goes to B&N because of the slightly lower prices (Boys Omnibus Vol. 1 $18 vs. $24), better selection, and the fact that Kobo doesn’t disclose its file sizes.

Google Play Books and Apple Books

If you fancy buying your comics with an app instead of on a traditional web page, Google and Apple have you covered. Both had all the titles I searched for, but despite having lower prices, Google didn’t disclose its file sizes. And if you want to use Apple Books, you’ll need a Mac or iOS device to access it.

DriveThruComics

Most casual comic readers probably haven’t heard of DriveThruComics. It doesn’t offer the breadth of content that the other big retailers have, but it does aggregate content from multiple smaller publishers as well as a couple bigger ones like Dynamite and Top Cow. DriveThruComics sells both single issues and TBPs.

There are some other sites out there, like eBooks.com and Smashwords, that sell comics, but they are focused on selling digital versions of traditional books. Digital comic books are more of an afterthought.

Best cheap Android tablets in 2024

A very small number of publishers sell digital editions of their comics directly on their websites. Most opt to skip the hassle of maintaining a storefront and let the big online retailers handle their business. Many even sell physical copies of single issues and trade paperbacks, but nothing electronic.

Dark Horse is one of the top 10 publishers in the industry and has a lot of great original titles available, like the source material for the hit show Resident Alien. It also has a bunch of licensed titles, like Avatar (the blue ones and the air bender), Star Wars, and Ghostbusters. And if you’re into manga, they’ve got old classics like Astro Boy and new classics like Blade of the Immortal. Dark Horse sells current issues and TPBs.

Dynamite is also one of the top 10 publishers. It has a reputation for making licensed comics, but it also produces original content. If you’re a Robert E. Howard fan Dynamite publishes Thulsa Doom and many Red Sonja comics. Not all of its content is available digitally, but it makes many single issues and TPBs available.

Humanoids was originally a French publisher but came Stateside about 10 years ago. Unless you’re connected to the comics scene, you probably haven’t heard of its titles, but that’s all the more reason to give it a look. Not all books are available online, but it does make both single issues and TPBs available.

IDW’s digital comics are available through its app which isn't a terrible experience, per se, but it isn’t the ideal way to consume comics. It has single issues and TPBs available, but you are locked into using the app to view your purchases; there is no way to download what you bought. As an example, you can buy TMNT: The Last Ronin for $30 from the IDW app and only ever be able to read it on devices that support the app. While you'll still be limited to an app if you choose to buy from Amazon, the book is much cheaper. And let's be honest, which app do you expect to outlast the other?

Vault is a relative newcomer to the publishing scene, so you might not have heard of its titles, but it has lots of original stories to choose from across all genres. It doesn’t sell individual issues, but it looks like all of its TPBs are available in electronic format.

Kindle needs to release a color E Ink e-reader before everyone else does

Subscriptions.

There are a lot of comics published every week. Between DC and Marvel, there are about 100 new comics published each month, and at around $3 per issue, that’s $300 to keep up with all the titles. Thankfully, unless you crave holding the comic in your hands, you can pay for a monthly subscription and read new and old titles on your phone or your computer.

Marvel Unlimited

If you’re into Marvel’s superheroes, there aren’t a lot of good reasons not to check out its subscription service. It has over 30,000 issues available to read, from its most popular series from classics to new releases. You can use the Marvel Unlimited app to read on your phone or tablet, or you can log in via the website to view it on a larger screen. Subscriptions are either $10 monthly or $70 annually to get access, with new books lagging behind retail by three months.

DC Universe Infinite

DC’s subscription service has over 20,000 titles available in its archive. It doesn’t have any new issues; subscribers will have to wait six months before they can access the latest content. Its monthly subscription is $8 and its annual plan is $75.

Shonen Jump

For those who are more into manga than western comics, you should probably look into Shonen Jump. It features over 15,000 chapters from classics like Naruto and Deathnote to modern hits like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen. Shonen Jump’s monthly digital subscription is just $3.

ComiXology Unlimited

We’ve already talked about Amazon as a digital comic retailer, but its ComiXology Unlimited service is also worth mentioning simply because of the scale of its catalog of 45,000 TPBs from most of the big publishers and the fact that it’s all available through the Kindle app. There is some overlap with the Kindle Unlimited service but each has titles exclusive from the other. ComiXology is also a bit cheaper than Kindle Unlimited at just $6 per month.

Kobo's new color e-readers add some saturation to your reading

Final thoughts.

Although the best time to buy comics online was back when ComiXology was independent of Amazon, things are pretty good right now with affordable subscription services and lots of places to buy new content. We also have to mention that Humble Bundle can be an excellent source for buying DRM-free comics at discounted prices, but you have to check in every week or so to see what it has available. If you want to read Golden Age comics that have gone into the public domain, you need to stop by the Digital Comic Museum . And don’t forget to stop by your local comic store . Of course, if you'd rather play a comic book game instead of reading one, you should check out these awesome Marvel games on Android .
