Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and STEM education fields within NSF’s mission . The GRFP provides up to three years of support for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant achievements in science and engineering research. The GRFP supports over 100 subfields.

The GRFP encourages applications from underrepresented groups, including women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and veterans, in order to broaden and diversify those participating in science and engineering.

Google PhD fellowship program

Google PhD Fellowships directly support graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor.

Nurturing and maintaining strong relations with the academic community is a top priority at Google. The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google’s mission is to foster inclusive research communities and encourage people of diverse backgrounds to apply. We currently offer fellowships in Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the United States.

Google PhD Fellowship students are a select group recognized by Google researchers and their institutions as some of the most promising young academics in the world. The Fellowships are awarded to students who represent the future of research in the fields listed below. Note that region-specific research areas will be listed in application forms during the application window.

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field. Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing.

In Canada and the United States, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

What does the Google PhD Fellowship include?

Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If students wish to apply for a job at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

• Up to 3 year Fellowship
• US $12K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Google Research Mentor
• 1 year Fellowship
• AUD $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Up to 2 year Fellowship (effective from 2024 for new recipients)
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.

Early-stage PhD students

• Up to 4 year Fellowship
• US $50K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Late-stage PhD students

• US $10K to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• US $15K per year to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Southeast Asia

• US $10K per year for up to 3 years (or up to graduation, whichever is earlier) to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Is my university eligible for the PhD Fellowship Program?

Africa, Australia/New Zealand , Canada, East Asia, Europe and the United States : universities must be an accredited research institution that awards research degrees to PhD students in computer science (or an adjacent field).

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open to universities/institutes in India, Latin America (excluding Cuba), and in eligible Southeast Asian countries/regions (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam).

Restrictions : All award payments and recipients will be reviewed for compliance with relevant US and international laws, regulations and policies. Google reserves the right to withhold funding that may violate laws, regulations or our policies.

What are the eligibility requirements for students?

All regions

• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to a PhD program. The awardee must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
• Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Africa: Incoming PhD students are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
• Australia and New Zealand : early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• East Asia: students who have completed most of graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins. Students should have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a fellowship.
• Europe: Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.

Direct applicant students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

• Latin America : incoming or early stage-students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

What should be included in an application? What language should the application be in?

All application materials should be submitted in English.

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single, flat (not portfolio) PDF file:

• Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (1-page) resume/CV of the student's primary PhD program advisor
• Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor's degree to date
• Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee''s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: What impact would receiving this Fellowship have on your education? Describe any circumstances affecting your need for a Fellowship and what educational goals this Fellowship will enable you to accomplish.
• Transcripts of current and previous academic records
• 1-2 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)

Canada, East Asia, the United States

• Cover sheet signed by the Department Chair confirming the student passes eligibility requirements. (See FAQ "What are the eligibility requirements for students?")
• Short (1-page) CV of the student's primary advisor
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
• Research / dissertation proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)

Students will need the following documents in a single, flat (not portfolio) PDF file in order to complete an application (in English only):

• Student applicant’s resume with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (one-page) resume/CV of the student applicant's primary PhD program advisor

How do I apply for the PhD Fellowship Program? Who should submit the applications? Can students apply directly for a Fellowship?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia: students may apply directly during the application period.

Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United States : students cannot apply directly to the program; they must be nominated by an eligible university during the application period.

How many students may each university nominate?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open directly to students with no limit to the number of students that can apply from a university.

Australia and New Zealand : universities may nominate up to two eligible students.

Canada and the United States : Universities may nominate up to four eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage additional nominees who self-identify as a woman, Black / African descent, Hispanic / Latino / Latinx, Indigenous, and/or a person with a disability.

Africa, East Asia and Europe : Universities may nominate up to three eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage the additional nominee who self-identifies as a woman.

How are applications evaluated?

In Canada and the United State, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

A nominee's status as a member of a historically marginalized group is not considered in the selection of award recipients.

Research should align with Google AI Principles .

Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

How are Google PhD Fellowships given?

Any monetary awards will be paid directly to the Fellow's university for distribution. No overhead should be assessed against them.

What are the intellectual property implications of a Google PhD Fellowship?

Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. If that is the case, they are subject to the same intellectual property restrictions as any other Google intern.

Will the Fellowship recipients become employees of Google?

No, Fellowship recipients do not become employees of Google due to receiving the award. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If they are interested in working at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

Can Fellowship recipients also be considered for other Google scholarships?

Yes, Fellowship recipients are eligible for these scholarships .

After award notification, when do the Google PhD Fellowships begin?

After Google PhD Fellowship recipients are notified, the Fellowship is effective starting the following school year.

What is the program application time period?

Applications for the 2024 program will open in March 2024 and close in May 2024 for all regions. Refer to the main Google PhD Fellowship Program page for each region’s application details.

A global awards announcement will be made in September on the Google Research Blog publicly announcing all award recipients.

• Research Fellowships for Graduate Students

Current graduate students supported by National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded projects or Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellows can join EPA Researchers as a fellow at an EPA facility.  The NSF supports these fellowships for up to six months through supplemental funding provided directly to the academic institution of the graduate students and fellows.  Researchers at EPA are encouraged to host these pre-funded fellows at their research facilities.  

The EPA strongly encourages eligible graduate students to: review the 2023 and 2024 EPA NSF-GRFP Projects (pdf) (197.3 KB)  open for hosting fellows; communicate with the EPA researcher listed on the project; and work with their academic mentors to prepare and submit an INTERN supplemental funding application to the NSF.  These projects are solely awarded and funded by NSF.  There are no financial transactions between EPA and NSF, academic Institutions, or fellows.  Please review the link below for more details on eligibility, application process, funding request instructions, allowable budget, and submission guidelines:

Research Fellowships Areas − Please note that some projects may not be available, therefore, contact the listed researcher to confirm their participation in EPA's fellowship program.  Please contact the EPA’s Partnership and Fellowships Team for any questions about this program and the EPA Project Lead/Mentor with any questions about a specific project opportunity.

Supplemental funding requests under NSF’s INTERN m ust include a letter of collaboration from EPA’s authorized official that describes the fellowship opportunity and the mentoring that will be provided to the student during the fellowship.  The supplemental budget requests:

• must not exceed $55,000 per student;
• may support travel, tuition and fees, health insurance, additional stipend and temporary relocation costs for the graduate student;
• may include up to $2,500 for materials and supplies;
• may include up to $2,500 to cover travel of academic mentor to the host facility; and
• may include indirect costs in accordance with their approved/negotiated indirect cost rate.

Funding requests may be submitted to the NSF at any time.  Application due date for each Fiscal Year (FY) is April 15.  Applications received after April 15 may not be reviewed or funded until the start of the following FY (October 1).  Additional information on the GRFP version of INTERN can be requested from GRF INTERN ([email protected]) .

Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library

Research fellowships for graduate students.

The Beinecke Library offers, on a competitive basis, fellowships to support graduate students to pursue onsite research with the collections for one to four months. We welcome applications from students enrolled in graduate programs at Yale and at any other university or college, locally or globally. The fellowship program aims to facilitate research by the broadest possible group of students, regardless of institutional association, race, cultural background, ability, sexual orientation, gender, or socioeconomic status. Students applying for a fellowship should be at an advanced stage in their research or prospectus development and propose a fully conceptualized project related to their degree program. Applications from students utilizing traditional methods of archival and bibliographic research are encouraged as are applications from students who wish to pursue creative, interdisciplinary, and non-traditional approaches to conducting research in the collections.

Fellowships must be taken between  June 1, 2025  and  May 31, 2026. We are unable to defer fellowship awards. 

Please Note: All graduate student fellows are responsible for reporting their fellowship to their home institution and for paying taxes related to the receipt of their fellowship award. Students enrolled in Yale’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences or in one of Yale’s professional schools should check with their advisor about funding implications before applying for a fellowship. 

COVID Advisory Note

Our ability to award fellowships to visiting researchers will be dependent on public health conditions and university guidelines. Current library policies can be found on the Library’s  website . 

Eligibility

• Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate degree program (PhD, MFA, MA, MPhil, MBA, etc.) at the time the fellowship will be taken . If you will graduate before you would take up your fellowship residency, you are not eligible for this award. You may apply for the Short-term Research Fellowship.  
• Students applying for a fellowship should be at an advanced stage in their research or prospectus development and have a fully conceptualized project related to their degree program.  
• Researchers not currently enrolled in a graduate degree program should apply to the short-term research fellowship . 

Expectations for Fellows

• This is a residential fellowship and fellows are expected to spend the majority of their time in the reading room. Fellows are meant to participate in the intellectual life of the university and are encouraged to participate in the activities of the library.  
• Seating in the reading room is limited, therefore applicants’ first choice for arrival cannot be guaranteed. Fellows must finalize their visit dates with the Fellowship Program team prior to arrival.  
• At the end of the fellowship period, fellows are asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience and to acknowledge the fellowship in publications and lectures that result from research conducted during the fellowship term. The Beinecke Library appreciates being informed of addtional work that stems from your fellowship period.

Funding Information

Fellowships will be awarded in the amount of $5,000 per month for research visits between one and four months in length. Fellows’ funding will be awarded at the beginning of the fellowship whenever possible; payment of international fellows often takes several weeks. All fellows are responsible for paying taxes related to the receipt of their fellowship award . Graduate student fellows are responsible for reporting their award to their home institution. 

Application Requirements

All materials must be received through Interfolio by the deadline of October 9, 2023. Applications from previous recipients of a Beinecke Graduate Student Research Fellowship will be considered only in exceptional circumstances. Applicants are required to submit:

• An application form  
• A curriculum vitae (3 pages max)  
• A research proposal (1,200 words max) that outlines:

o   Significance of collections research to your project

o   Value of the project to your field 

o   Feasibility of completing the scope of research proposed within the fellowship period 

• A detailed list of materials to be examined during your fellowship, including call numbers, collection names, and any other bibliographic information available.  Also include links to the description of the materials in Orbis, Quicksearch, and/or Archives at Yale.  If you anticipate consulting oversize materials (broadsides, posters, maps, etc.), please indicate those clearly in your list  
• One confidential letters of recommendation, preferably from your dissertation chair, academic advisor, or equivalent

Nsf awards fellowships to 60 georgia tech graduate students.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded 60 Georgia Tech students with Graduate Research Fellowships (GRF). The fellowships, valued at $159,000 each, include funding for three years of graduate study and tuition.

This year’s winners represent areas of study ranging from aerospace engineering to ocean sciences. The purpose of the GRF initiative , the oldest of NSF’s programs, is to develop experts who will contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. Their awards total more than $9.5 million in funding, the most Georgia Tech has ever had in the program.

Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) A*STAR  Graduate Academy offers and awards scholarships and fellowships to young aspiring scientific talent at top global universities to enable them to pursue their passion in science and to prepare for a rewarding R&D career. Since 2001, A*STAR has supported and nurtured a pipeline of more than 1300 local PhD talent, ensuring a sustainable flow of capable and committed PhD students and early-career researchers at public research institutes, industry and universities, as part of Singapore's efforts to strengthen the growing community of scientific talent in Singapore.

Air and Waste Management Association (A&WMA) Graduate Scholarships The Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) provides several scholarships to outstanding students who are pursuing courses of study and research leading to careers in air quality, waste management, environmental management / policy / law, and sustainability.

Aker Scholarship The Aker Scholarship is for Norwegian students pursuing an advanced degree in all disciplines.  Scholarships are limited to students pursuing degrees at Caltech, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, and the National University of Singapore.

Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Scholarship AG Bell offers several scholarship for full-time students who have a pre-lingual bilateral hearing loss in the moderately-severe to profound range, use listening and spoken language, and who are pursuing a bachelors, masters or doctorate (not law or public policy) degree at an accredited mainstream college or university.

American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Foundation Grants Grants are open to all geology graduate students.  Grants are based on merit, and in part, on the financial needs of the applicant. Although the focus of the program is the support of qualified candidates for Masters or equivalent degrees, qualified doctoral candidates are also encouraged to apply.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) - Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Dissertation Completion The Mellon/ACLS supports a year of research and writing to help advanced graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences  in the last year of PhD dissertation writing. The program encourages timely completion of the PhD. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure.

American Council of the Blind Scholarship For blind individuals who plan to attend or are attending college, graduate school or vocational training.

American Foundation for the Blind Scholarships The AFB offers the Paul and Ellen Ruckes Scholarship of $1,000 to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in the field of engineering or in computer, physical, or life sciences.  The Karen D. Carsel Memorial Scholarship offers one scholarship of $500 to a full-time graduate student.

American Geophysical Union (AGU) - Horton Research Grant in Hydrological Sciences Grants are awarded each year in support of Ph.D. candidates in hydrology or water resources research.

American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship AHA's predoctoral fellowship helps students initiate careers in cardiovascular and stroke research by providing research assistance and training.  Proposals are encouraged from all basic science disiplines, bioengineering or biotechnology, public health, behavioral, epidemiological and community and clinical investigations that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems.

American Society for Microbiology (ASM) - Robert D. Watkins Graduate Research Fellowship The goal of the fellowship is to increase the number of underrepresented groups completing doctoral degrees in the microbiological sciences. The ASM Robert D. Watkins Graduate Research Fellowship is aimed at highly competitive graduate students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program and who have completed their graduate course work in the microbiological sciences. The fellowship encourages students to continue and complete their research project in the microbiological sciences.

American Water Works Association (AWWA) The AWWA offers scholarships for graduate students conducting research in the improvement of drinking water quality and supply.

Argonne National Laboratory - Graduate Student Programs Argonne National Laboratory offers several opportunities for qualified graduate students who are engaged in work related to Argonne Programs.

Autism Speaks - Dennis Weatherstone Predoctoral Fellowships Autism Speaks supports global biomedical research into the diagnosis, causes, prevention and treatment of autism.  Autism Speaks invites applications from predoctoral students interested in pursuing careers in autism research. 

Candidates must be an enrolled student in a program leading to a research doctorate such as a Ph.D. or Sc.D., or a combined degree such as an M.D./Ph.D., in an academic department of an accredited university or health/medical institution.  The selected pre-doctoral fellow must spend at least 80% of his/her professional time engaged exclusively in their Autism Speaks' autism research related activities for the duration of the award, and cannot simultaneously hold another named fellowship award during the support period. International applications are encouraged.

Chateaubriand Fellowships for Science & Technology Research in France The Chateaubriand Fellowship in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Health for doctoral students aims to initiate or reinforce collaborations, partnerships or joint projects between French and American research teams. The Chateaubriand Fellowship supports PhD students registered in an American university who wish to conduct part of their doctoral research in a French laboratory.

This fellowship is offered by the Office for Science & Technology (OST) of the Embassy of France in Washington in partnership with American universities and French research organizations such as Inserm and Inria. It is a partner of the National Science Foundation's GROW program .

Christine H. Eide Memorial Scholarship Award For full-time graduate or undergraduate students who are legally blind and who are entering or attending an accredited college or university.

Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)/Proquest Distinguished Dissertation Award Sponsored jointly by CGS and ProQuest Dissertations Publishing, a Division of ProQuest Information and Learning, and first presented in 1981, these awards are made annually to individuals who, in the opinion of the award committee, have completed dissertations representing original work that makes an unusually significant contribution to the discipline. 

Two awards are given annually in two different broad areas (biological sciences; social sciences; mathematics, physical sciences and engineering; and humanities and fine arts). Individuals must be nominated for these awards by a member institution.

Epilepsy Foundation of America - Research Training Fellowships The Epilepsy Foundation supports a series of grants and fellowships to advance the understanding of epilepsy that will lead to better treatment, more effective prevention, and ultimately to a cure. Funding is available to researchers at all professional levels including students, junior investigators and established investigators.

Facebook Graduate Fellowship Program Facebook offers fellowships to graduate students in computer science, electrical engineering, and related fields.

Fermilab Graduate Student Research Program in Theoretical Physics The Fermilab Graduate Student Research Program in Theoretical Physics is intended for graduate students at U.S. universities who are in the research phase of graduate study in theoretical particle physics or theoretical astrophysics.  Positions in this program will last for one year (12 months), generally starting in the Fall.  Graduate students in the Graduate Student Research Program will remain matriculated at their home universities but be in residence at Fermilab.

Fulbright Program for Foreign Students The Fulbright Program brings citizens of other countries to the United States for Master's degree or Ph.D. study at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions.  Foreign students apply for Fulbright Fellowships through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or U.S. Embassy in their home countries. The Institute of International Education (IIE) arranges academic placement for most Fulbright nominees and supervises participants during their stay in the United States.  See the Fulbright website for country specific information. 

Google Lime Scholarship for Students with Disabilities Google has partnered with Lime Connect , a nonprofit organization that supports students with disabilities while they pursue education and promising careers, to help university students with disabilities work toward their academic goals in the field of computer science.

Google US/Canada PhD Fellowship The Google U.S./Canada PhD Student Fellowship recognizes outstanding graduate students doing exceptional work in computer science and related disciplines.  Applicants must be nominated by their department and forwarded to the Graduate Studies Office for review.  Two finalists will then be forwarded to Google for consideration in the national competition.

The Grass Foundation Fellowship Program Grass Fellowships at the Marine Biological Laboratory  (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA, support investigator-designed, independent research projects by scientists early in their career. Early investigators (late stage predoctoral trainees and beyond) are eligible to apply. This includes applicants with prior experience at MBL or with the Grass Foundation (MBL course alumni are encouraged to apply). Priority is given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a research career. Please see FAQ page on website or contact the Program Coordinator  for more information. International Fellows (i.e., not US citizens or resident aliens) must hold a valid visa (J-1, H-1B, F1 or F1-OPT) for the entire duration of the fellowship.

HENAAC Scholars Program All science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors qualify for the HENAAC scholarships.  Applicants must be of Hispanic descent and/or must significantly participate in and promote organizations and activities in the Hispanic community.

HHMI International Student Research Fellowships This fellowship program supports outstanding international predoctoral students studying in the United States who are ineligible for fellowships or training grants through U.S. federal agencies. Participation is by invitation only. Nominated students must be in their second or third year of study to apply for the fellowship. To activate the fellowship, students must be in the third or fourth year of a PhD program at one of the designated institutions. Students in the first, second, or fifth year of their PhD programs cannot activate the fellowship. In no case will support be provided past year five of a PhD program.

Students invited to participate in this program are eligible for a fellowship to support years three, four, and five of a PhD program. Eligible fields of study include biology, chemistry, physics, math, computer science, engineering, and plant biology—as well as interdisciplinary research. 

IBM Ph.D. Fellowship The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program is an intensely competitive worldwide program, which honors exceptional Ph.D. students who have an interest in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study. These include: computer science and engineering (including cyber security, cloud, and mobile computing), electrical and mechanical engineering, physical sciences (including chemistry, material sciences, and physics),  mathematical sciences (including analytics of massive scale data with uncertainty, operations research, and optimization), public sector and business sciences (including urban policy and analytics, social technologies, learning systems and cognitive computing), and Service Science, Management, and Engineering (SSME).

Indo-US Science and Technology Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) Provides unique opportunities for science, technology, engineering and medical students from the United States to undertake internships in national laboratories, federal research centers, academic research institutes, and private R&D laboratories in India. Objective of the internships are to provide students exposure to Indian S&T milieu, gain practical skills and develop collaborative networks. Internships are envisaged as a source of mutual cultural and professional enrichment for both the interns and their host institutions.

Intel PhD Fellowship Program The Intel PhD Fellowship Program awards fellowships to exceptional PhD candidates pursuing leading-edge innovation in fields related to Intel's business and research interests.

Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust The Josephine De Karman Fellowship Trust was established in 1954 by the late Dr. Theodore Von Karman, world renowned aeronautics expert and teacher and first director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, in memory of his sister, Josephine, who passed away in 1951.  The purpose of this Fellowship program is to recognize and assist students whose scholastic achievements reflect Professor Von Karman's high standards. 

DeKarman fellowships are open to students in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university or college located within the United States.  Only candidates for the PhD who will defend their dissertation within two years and undergraduates entering their senior year are eligible for consideration.  Postdoctoral and masters degree students are not eligible for consideration.  Special consideration will be given to applicants in the Humanities. 

Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) Scholarship This program was established in 1974 to support talented young students in social sciences, natural sciences, computer science, and information technology-related fields. The program enables the students to pursue and successfully complete their doctorates at leading overseas research universities.

Latin American Scholarship Program of American Universities (LASPAU) Laspau administers a part of the Fulbright Program which provides grants to individuals from Latin America and the Caribbean for graduate study in the United States.  Grants are awarded for Master's and PhD programs in a variety of fields of study.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory - Livermore Graduate Scholar Program The Livermore Graduate Scholar Program (LGSP) and its predecessor programs have played a critical role for many years  in helping to recruit new scientific and engineering talent to Lawrence  Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Top Ph.D. students are granted appointments of up to four years to conduct research of interest to the Laboratory while completing their thesis.

Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering and Technology Fellowship Resident fellowships for the duration of a minimum of 1 month to a maximum of 9 months are offered in support of research projects in science, engineering, and technology; in the history of science, engineering and technology; or in interdisciplinary topics that link science or technology to the broader culture.

Recipients of fellowships are expected to work full time on their research projects while at the Library, to engage with other resident scholars, and to offer a presentation on their work to the general public. 

Link Foundation - Energy Fellowships In an effort to foster education and innovation in the area of societal production and utilization of energy, the Link Foundation invites applications for 2-year fellowships for students working toward a Ph.D. degree.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) - Graduate Research Assistantship The Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) Program is a year-round educational program that provides students with relevant research experience while they are pursuing a graduate degree. In some cases, students can arrange to conduct master's or doctoral thesis research at the Laboratory.

Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship Microsoft Research is committed to advancing the state of computer science. Our fellowship program provides financial support for students and early-career faculty, allowing them to focus on their research. Fellowships build lasting relationships between Microsoft Research and academic institutions.  Applicants must be nominated by their department and forwarded to the Graduate Studies Office for review.  Finalists will then be forwarded to Microsoft for consideration in the national competition.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) - Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF) NASA is seeking fellowship proposals from accredited U.S. universities on behalf of individuals pursuing Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth and space sciences, or related disciplines.  The purpose of NESSF is to ensure continued training of a highly qualified workforce in disciplines needed to achieve NASA's scientific goals.  Awards resulting from the competitive selection will be made in the form of training grants to the respective universities. 

National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) - Soffen Grants for Travel to Conferences The travel grants are awarded to students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in aerospace-related sciences or engineering fields (astrobiology, astronomy, earth and space science, engineering, etc.) to attend a meeting at which they will present their research. Students of all nationalities are welcome to apply; however, applicants must be enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate or graduate institution of higher learning in the United States.

National Federation of the Blind Scholarship For students residing in the United States who are legally blind in both eyes and who plan to pursue a full-time degree program at a U.S. college or university.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. Proposals must fall within the scope of any of the clusters in the Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) or the Behavioral Systems Cluster in the Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS). These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research for improvement beyond the already existing project. Allowed are costs for doctoral candidates to participate in scientific meetings, to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings, and to expand an existing body of dissertation research.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Scholarships The Alexander Graham  Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral Program (CGS D) and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral Program (PGS D) provide  financial support to high calibre scholars who are engaged in a doctoral program in  the natural sciences or engineering.  NSERC encourages interested and qualified Aboriginal  students to apply.

Qualcomm Innovation Fellowships in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science The QInF program is open to teams of two students from a preselected variety of top US based and international schools. Students are encouraged to apply and submit a proposal on any innovative idea of their choice. Qualcomm Research's top engineers carefully review submitted proposals and select the QInF finalists, who are then invited to present their proposals to a panel of executive judges. Winning students earn a one year fellowship and are mentored by our engineers to facilitate the success of the proposed research.

Roberto Rocca Education Program Fellowship The Roberto Rocca Fellowship provides Ph.D. support for exceptional university graduates from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Mexico, Romania, and Venezuela in specific fields of study that include, but are not limited to, Materials Science, Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering.

Scholarships for Undocumented Students The Educators for Fair Consideration (E4FC) maintain a list of scholarships and fellowships available for immigrant students attending graduate and professional schools.  

Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) Foundation Scholarships SEG Foundation Scholarships encourage the study of geophysics and related geosciences. The SEG Foundation offers a range of different scholarship opportunities. Funds provided may be applied to tuition, books, and fees. 

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Foundation Dissertation Scholarships Merit-based scholarships awarded to doctoral candidates, who demonstrate both significant motivation and aptitude for a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics and have completed All But Dissertation.

Symantec Graduate Fellowship Program Symantec will award Symantec Research Labs (SRL) Graduate Fellowships to outstanding Ph.D. students. Preference will be given to students with a desire to work in an industrial research lab and those working on innovative research projects in areas related to Symantec's businesses such as security, data mining, storage, backup, machine learning, virtualization, cloud computing, big data infrastructure, etc.  

Taiwan/Caltech Ministry of Education Fellowship The Ministry of Education (MOE), Taiwan and Caltech jointly administer Taiwan-Caltech Graduate Scholarships to support new graduate students from Taiwan of outstanding talents who are pursuing a Ph.D. degree at Caltech. Scholarships are tenable in all fields of study. Applicants should be ROC citizens preferably residing in Taiwan, although those currently studying outside Taiwan are not excluded. Applicants must gain admission to Caltech and are subject to Caltech's standard procedures and requirements. Each scholarship will normally be of three (3) years' duration and will cover stipend, tuition and mandatory fees. Applicants must apply directly to MOE using the application portal by the posted deadline.

The Whitaker Foundation The Whitaker International Program sends emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) overseas to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their careers within the field.  The goal of the program is to assist the development of professional leaders who are not only superb scientists, but who also will advance the profession through an international outlook. Along with supporting grant projects in an academic setting, the Whitaker International Program encourages grantees to engage in policy work and propose projects in an industry setting.

Woods Hold Oceanographic Institution - Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) Fellowship Graduate students and researchers from a variety of fields who share a common interest in the nonlinear dynamics of rotating, stratified fluids share an intense ten-week research experience, and vigorous discussions of concepts that span different disciplines. Fellows pursue a research project under the supervision of the staff and present a lecture and a written report for a proceedings volume. Fellows are expected to be in residence for the full ten weeks of the program.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) announced the 2024 Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awardees. Five current and past College of Creative Studies (CCS) students were selected for the fellowship and six current CCS students received honorable mentions. In total, there were sixteen fellowship recipients and fifteen honorable mentions from UC Santa Barbara. The College community congratulates these future trailblazers as they pursue endeavors aimed at positively impacting society!

Experiential learning is at the center of student learning at CCS, including preparing our students for those interested in pursuing scholarly endeavors. The College recognizes the vital role that its faculty play in mentoring its curious and passionate students with 70 percent of those in STEM majors pursuing advanced degrees at the masters and doctoral levels, according to a past alumni survey. CCS Biology Faculty John Latto and Claudia Tyler lead an annual colloquium on navigating the graduate school application process, including information about the GRFP. In addition, previous recipients of the GRFP have been invited to return to campus to inspire and share their journeys with current students considering applying.

The GRFP is a distinguished fellowship program that supports outstanding graduating seniors and early-stage graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields who intend on pursuing research-based masters and doctoral degrees and show potential for significant research achievements. As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the GRFP has a legacy of selecting recipients who go on to achieve significant research achievements in their academic and professional endeavors.

Fellows receive a three-year annual stipend and a cost-of-education allowance covering tuition and fees to conduct research at any accredited U.S. institution offering graduate education. In addition, these fellows have opportunities for international research and professional development. These NSF Fellows are anticipated to become leaders in STEM research, education, and innovation. 

Again, congratulations to the 2024 awardees! CCS invites NSF GRFP recipients and others who went on to scholarly endeavors to return to the College to share their graduate experiences with current students.

Nine Sooners Receive NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

NORMAN, OKLA. – Five current students at the University of Oklahoma, four from the Gallogly College of Engineering and one from the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy, as well as four OU alumni, have been named 2024 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows. This five-year fellowship awards students with a three-year annual stipend, allowance for tuition and fees and access to opportunities for NSF professional development.

Brigid Bernier earned an undergraduate degree in geosciences from the University of Connecticut and is currently pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Oklahoma.

Isaiah Gilley earned undergraduate degrees in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Oklahoma and is currently pursuing a graduate degree at Northwestern University.

Derek Madden will earn an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Maria Muñoz earned an undergraduate degree in ecology from the University of Oklahoma and is pursuing a graduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Daniel Pfaff earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Oklahoma and is pursuing a graduate degree from the University of California-Santa Cruz.

Alexander Pham earned an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Sayre Tillery will earn an undergraduate degree in bioengineering and biomedical engineering from the University of Oklahoma in May 2024.

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program is the country’s oldest fellowship program that directly supports graduate students in various STEM fields. Since 1952, NSF has funded over 70,000 Graduate Research Fellowships out of more than 500,000 applicants. Currently, 42 Fellows have gone on to become Nobel laureates, and more than 450 have become members of the National Academy of Sciences.

PhD students earn major NSF graduate research fellowships

Three Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering graduate students have received 2024 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships for their promising quantum and metameterial antennas research.  

This year, the NSF awarded 27 students from CU Boulder , including 18 from the College of Engineering and Applied Science with the 2024 graduate research fellowship, a prestigious award recognizing students in a wide variety of STEM disciplines, exploring some of the most pressing issues of our time. 

Each recipient will receive three years of financial support, including an annual stipend of $37,000, as well as professional development and research opportunities.

Aliza Siddiqui

Advisor: Joshua Combes Lab: Combes Group

Bio: Siddiqui is a first-year PhD student with a research concentration in Quantum Engineering and Architecture. She graduated from Louisiana State University, home of the Tigers, with a degree in computer science.

My proposal involves creating a new benchmarking/testing framework for the next generation of error-corrected quantum computers. Given the noise of physical qubits, recent work has suggested combining the state of several physical qubits to create a logical qubit. I will collaborate with Dr. Josh Combes and Sandia National Labs for my PhD. Through this work, the quantum community will have a tool-kit that will help us determine how well a quantum computer performs, diagnose what and where the issues are and create solutions to realize full-scale, error-corrected quantum systems. 

Dylan Meyer

Advisor: Scott Diddams Lab: Frequency Comb & Quantum Metrology Lab

Bio: Meyer is a first-year PhD student in the FCQM group. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in Electrical Engineering.

My research proposal is the development of highly stable and robust millimeter wave time and frequency (T&F) transfer, supporting T&F transfer between atomic clocks. T&F transfer is used to create clock networks that are essential for positioning and navigation, such as GPS and essential infrastructure like the Internet and power grid. These technologies support up to $1 billion dollars of trade and financial transactions a day. In addition, these clock networks are capable of fundamental science experiments capable of probing new and exciting questions related to physics and geodesy.

Advisors:  Cody Scarborough and Robert MacCurdy Lab Groups:  Electromagnetic Metamaterials Research Group and Matter Assembly Computation Lab

Bio:  Pham received their Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. They worked for three years as an RF engineer developing radar systems, and will begin their PhD in fall 2024.

My research proposal is on the application of multi-material additive manufacturing techniques for metamaterial antennas. Electromagnetic metamaterials use engineered structures that exhibit unique material properties not found with traditional materials. Antennas can be designed using metamaterials to have more sophisticated antenna capabilities and unique form-factors compared to conventional antennas. By leveraging multi-material additive manufacturing, there are more degrees-of-freedom for the shape and composition of the metamaterials. This research would enhance the design flexibility and capabilities of next-generation antennas to meet the growing performance demands of future wireless systems.

Applicants for study/research awards design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. The study/research awards are available in approximately 140 countries. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicants' first step is to familiarize themselves with the program summary for the host country.

Fulbright arts grants.

Australia : Western Sydney University Award enables American students to undertake research in the following fields of study: Creative and Performing Arts (all fields), Environmental Studies, Social Justice and Public Health.

France : Fulbright-Harriet Hale Woolley Awards in the Arts are offered to students in the visual fine arts (painting, print-making, sculpture, photography) or music (composition, instrumental, or vocal performance). Hungary : Fulbright/Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music Award offers training to students with strong music education backgrounds in one of the following: symphonic orchestral instruments, voice, jazz, music education, music history, composition, choir/orchestral conducting or folk music. Ireland : Fulbright/Hugh Lane Gallery Curatorial Award enables an American student to pursue an exciting education curatorial project for up to 12 months working with the Hugh Lane team. The project will contribute to the gallery's strategy, as well as the Dublin City Council’s strategy, of embedding a culture of continuous engagement between the Hugh Lane Art Gallery and Dublin's communities. The project will involve working with communities in the city as well in the gallery, establishing and developing strong links between the cultural institution and the communities. Fulbright/University College Cork Masters in Creative Writing Award enables students to pursue a taught Masters in Creative Writing. Netherlands : Fulbright/American Friends of the Mauritshuis Award will focus on the study, examination and treatment of works of art in the collection of the Mauritshuis, in combination with a tailor-made study program at the University of Amsterdam. The grantee will gain practical experience and knowledge in in-depth technical study and treatment of paintings in the conservation studio of the Mauritshuis, under the supervision of the conservators of the museum.  

Taiwan : National Cheng Kung University offers a Master’s Degree program award in Creative Industries Design. T his award enables American students to pursue a full-time Master’s degree program. The program is taught in English.

United Kingdom : John Wood LAMDA Award offers a one-year Masters in Classical Acting. Trinity Laban Award in Music & Dance and the University of Roehampton Award in Dance all fund a one-year Master’s degree or the first year of a longer Master’s or PhD program.

Fulbright Business Grants

Finland : Fulbright-LUT Graduate Award is available for a student in the fields of business or technology. The award is primarily aimed at students who wish to complete a full Master’s degree at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology.

Mexico : Binational Internships enhance the knowledge, expertise, and understanding of post-NAFTA Mexico. This award is available for students interested in combining coursework in international business or law with an internship at a Mexico-based company conducting international or legal business.

Spain : Fulbright/IE University Award for International MBA offers awards to pursue the following full-time Master's program at IE Business School:

Germany : The Young Professional Journalist Program typically begins with the grantees undertaking individual research, followed by one or more internships with German media institutions. Austria :  Fulbright-Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Award for Research in Science and Technology offers support for full-time research in STEM fields.

Chile : Pursuant to the Commission's interest in supporting study at Chile's leading science centers, the Chile Science Initiative Award will be given with preference for students conducting Master's-level or Ph.D. study/research in science and technology fields.

Hungary : Fulbright/Budapest Semesters in Mathematics-Rényi Institute enables an American student to reside one academic year (two semesters) at Budapest Semesters of Mathematics (BSM), take courses, and to take part in the activities of BSM.

Iceland : Fulbright-National Science Foundation Arctic Research Grant is open to students in all social and natural science fields as they relate to the Arctic and the people living there.

Ireland : Fulbright/RCSI PhD Awards enables US citizens to complete a fully funded PhD at the Royal College of Surgeons, an innovative, pioneering international health sciences education and research institution dedicated to breakthroughs in human health.

Netherlands :   Fulbright/Delft University of Technology: Industrial Design Engineering Award offers an opportunity in one of three MSc degree programs in Industrial Design Engineering: Design for Interaction (DfI), Strategic Product Design (SPD), and Integrated Product Design (IPD). Fulbright/NAF Fellowship in Flood Management is limited to research related to flooding. Applicants should have attained their undergraduate core technical skills already but will want to complement these with a graduate multidisciplinary study of water management aspects, such as: assessment of flooding risks, spatial planning in flood-prone areas, and mitigating flood impact and flood risk reduction.

South Korea: The U.S.-Korea Presidential STEM Initiative Award offers awards for research projects in all STEM fields for applicants of all degree levels.

Spain : Fulbright IE University Master's Award at IE School of Business/IE School of Science and Technology offers one award to pursue a full-time Master's degree in Business Analytics and Big Data Taiwan : National Taiwan University offers a Master’s Degree program award in Global Health or Agricultural Economics . Additionally, National Cheng Kung University offers a Master’s Degree program award in Energy Engineering . These awards enable American students to pursue full-time Master’s degree programs. The programs are taught in English. Master’s Degree Program Awards: Taipei Medical University Awards in Mind, Brain, and Consciousness allows research topics that span across philosophy, cognitive psychology and neuroscience, such as neuro-ethics, attention and memory, sleep, mindfulness, selfhood, circadian rhythms and mood, and social cognition.

ASU's Emeritus College and the ASU Graduate College co-sponsor this professional development award for graduate students who have participated in Preparing Future Faculty and Scholars programs. Awards of $1,000-1,500 may be used for any purpose associated with the completion of a student's research and/or degree.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to receive this award, applicant must:

• Have successfully completed PFF or PFx at ASU within the last three years.
• Have not previously received this fellowship.
• Be within one year of completion of a terminal degree at ASU.
• If in a doctoral program, Spring 2024 applicants must have advanced to candidacy or expect to do so before the end of the Fall 2024 semester.
• Have a demonstrated commitment to advancing disciplinary knowledge in a future research or creative profession.

Application Procedures

Application for this program is sent to graduate students who have successfully completed Preparing Future Faculty and Scholars programs.

For consideration of this award an applicant should complete and submit the "Graduate College Emeritus Faculty Fellowship Application Form” by the stated deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Eligible applications will undergo faculty review and applicants will be notified of decisions within four (4) weeks on application deadline.

An overaward is when a student's need-based awards exceed their financial need, or the total of the awards exceeds the cost of attendance. If a student has been overawarded, federal regulations require ASU to adjust their awards, which may result in a reduction in awards or a bill. Need-based aid includes grants, scholarships, Federal Work-Study, Federal Perkins Loans, and outside resources (i.e., faculty/staff tuition benefits, scholarships, stipends, etc.). Non-need-based aid includes unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Graduate PLUS Loans, and Private Education Loans.
