CURRENT STUDENTS

Ph.D. Program

Stanford Ph.D. Program in History aims to train world-class scholars.

Every year we admit 10-12 promising students  from a large pool of highly selective applicants. Our small cohort size allows more individual work with faculty than most graduate programs in the United States and also enables funding in one form or another available to members of each cohort.

Fields of Study

Our graduate students may specialize in 14 distinct subfields: Africa, Britain, Early Modern Europe, East Asia, Jewish History, Latin America, Medieval Europe, Modern Europe,  Ottoman Empire and Middle East, Russia/Eastern Europe, Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine, South Asia, Transnational, International, and Global History, and United States. History, PhD

The Graduate Program in History at the University of Pennsylvania has a long tradition of distinction. Beginning as one of the first programs in the United States to offer doctoral study in history, (the first Ph.D. in History was conferred in 1891); the Department continues to pioneer new areas of scholarship. In the last twenty years, faculty members of the departments in American, European, and World History have assumed a leading role in their fields. Today, few departments in the country match Penn's Department of History in coverage and depth across the entire range of history from medieval times to the present.

UCLA History Department

Admissions Information

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in applying to the History graduate program at UCLA for  2023-2024 .

The deadline for application is December 1. All admitted students are expected to enroll the following fall. Deferred enrollment is not permitted. Before submitting the application please read all forms and instructions carefully.

All applicants must apply electronically for graduate admission and financial aid. The application should be available mid September, but please continue to check the website at the beginning of September for updates. This can be done at  https://grad.ucla.edu/gasaa/admissions/applicat.htm  . Admission status for Fall will be available online by mid-March. A direct link to the application can be found here:  https://grad.ucla.edu/admissions/admission-application-for-graduate-admission/

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Because the History Department has several different fields, each with slightly different requirements, the criteria for admissions are not rigidly standardized. The admissions committee considers the following factors:

  • three letters of recommendation from the student’s former or current professors.
  • the applicant’s statement of purpose (1000 Words).
  • personal statement
  • a writing sample of no longer than 10 pages, double spaced (not including bibliography).
  • foreign language training
  • undergraduate or M.A. grade point average
  • Unofficial transcript uploaded on the online application. We may request official transcripts at a later time.
  • International applicants must also submit a TOEFL or IELTS score (in most cases). Please visit the following link for more information: http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gasaa/admissions/ENGREQ.HTM .

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

The faculty relies heavily on the comments and assessment of colleagues at UCLA and other academic institutions. A thoughtful and thorough assessment provides insight into the student’s abilities, preparation and motivation. Several such evaluations combine to form a detailed picture of the student’s background and potential. It is the applicant’s responsibility to check with people who have written the letters of recommendation to make sure that they are submitted by the deadline.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

A candidate’s statement of purpose distinguishes him or her from all other applicants. It indicates to faculty the student’s interests, ability to state research goals concisely, and to some degree, the candidate’s maturity and sophistication, both of which are significant in an extremely competitive program. The admissions committee looks for students who show that they have already focused on a given field and have a reasonable awareness of what the department has to offer. It is helpful for candidates to list the names of faculty members with whom they would like to work.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

The Personal Statement is an opportunity for you to provide additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. It will also be used to consider candidates for the Cota-Robles and Graduate Opportunity fellowships.  Please be sure to follow the application prompts and guidelines for the personal statement.

WRITING SAMPLE

Your writing sample should be no longer than 10 pages, double spaced (not including bibliography). Book reviews, senior thesis, and research papers are acceptable.  You may also submit an excerpt of a longer paper (e.g. MA or senior thesis) but please adhere to the 10 pages.  You can include a brief explanation before the sample if it is from a larger work.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING

The importance of language training varies from field to field. A student of U.S. history, which requires only one foreign language, could conceivably begin the program with minimal foreign language preparation. On the other hand, students in other fields should come to UCLA already having done significant work in their major language. Those without such training would have difficulty with their required course work and research, both because of the difficulty of these languages and because these fields require proficiency in two or more foreign languages.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE

The general requirement for admission for a U.S. student is a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, comparable in standard and content to a bachelor’s degree from the University of California. An overall scholastic average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better is required, or its equivalent if the letter grade system is not used, and in any post-baccalaureate study.

ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS

If your first language is not English, you must certify proficiency in English when you apply to UCLA.  If you are admitted, you may also be required to confirm your proficiency upon arrival.  Submit your scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)  Academic as part of your application. The TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). IELTS Academic is administered by local IELTS test centers throughout the world. Consult IELTS for the test center nearest your home or university. More information about this requirement can be found on Graduate Division’s website here:  https://grad.ucla.edu/admissions/english-requirements/

The Department of History offers a PhD program centered on rigorous research within a vibrant and diverse intellectual community. While most of our students have a history degree (BA) or degrees (BA and MA), we accept students with a variety of backgrounds and interests.

Admission is highly competitive. All offers include a full university fellowship for the duration of the program. Between 2017 and 2024, a number of excellent students selected for admission were named  Neubauer Family Distinguished Doctoral Fellows and received additional fellowship support over for five years.

Admissions Deadline (Autumn 2025 program start):  December 5, 2024 at 11:55

Application Process

Interested students apply to the PhD program through the  Division of the Social Sciences . For questions regarding the application submission and fee waivers, please contact  SSD Admissions.  For questions regarding the History PhD Program or History-specific application components, please contact our  graduate affairs administrator .

Official decisions are sent by the Social Science Admissions Office by late February. The Department cannot release any information on admissions decisions.

Application Advice

The requirements for the application can be found on the divisional  admissions pages . The following advice is specific to your application to the Department of History.

Your  writing sample  should be a complete self-contained work. The ideal sample should be in the field of history (or a closely related field) that you plan to pursue at Chicago. Include the class or publication for which the sample was written. We do not have a page or word limit for writing samples. For papers longer than thirty pages, please flag a section for the committee.

Your  candidate statement  provides us with vital insight into the intersection of your intellectual goals and personal trajectory. It should communicate: 1) the ambitions you wish to pursue through doctoral work in history; 2) the specific questions and themes that will shape your dissertation research; 3) the personal and intellectual trajectory that has brought you to those themes and questions and prepared you to pursue them; and 4) the reasons that the University of Chicago and its faculty are well-matched to your doctoral plans.

The most helpful  letters of recommendation  come from faculty members who can assess your ability to work on your proposed historical topic.

Prospective students are asked to identify one or two primary fields of scholarly interest from a list in the application. Our faculty pages are sorted by field. Please see those pages for more information on faculty working in your field of interest. Please note, however, that we highly encourage applicants who work across field boundaries and do not apportion admissions by field.

There is no minimum  foreign language requirement  to enter the program, but successful applicants should possess strong language skills in their proposed research language(s) and be aware of the  language requirements for the various fields . All students are required to take a language exam in the first quarter of the program.

The University sets the  English-language assessment  requirements. Refer to the  Division of the Social Sciences  for English-language requirements and waivers.

Submission of  GRE scores  is entirely optional. Those who choose not to submit scores will not be disadvantaged in the admissions process.

MA Program Consideration

All applicants who are not admitted to our PhD program are automatically forwarded for consideration by our MA programs, unless the applicant specifically opts out of this process on their application. That said, as referred applications are considered later than most other MA applications, scholarship assistance for students admitted to an MA program through the referral process may be limited. If you are interested in our MA programs and would need scholarship assistance to attend, we would encourage you to apply directly to the MA as well as our program (note that this would require a separate application and application fee). MA applications are accepted  multiple times per year  with decisions typically issued within 6 to 8 weeks. Questions about applying to an MA program should be directed to  [email protected] .

Campus Visits

We encourage prospective students to reach out to potential faculty mentors through email. Please consult our faculty page to find professors who share your interests. Our graduate affairs administrator can provide additional information about the program.

The University also offers  graduate campus tours  throughout the year that are led by graduate students. Please check their website for campus visitor updates.

Admitted PhD students are invited to visit campus for "History Day" at the beginning of Spring Quarter.

The Department of History welcomes your application for doctoral studies. Before applying, be sure to read the Guidelines section of this website, which covers the structure and requirements of the Ph.D. Program in History.

In a typical year, we welcome a small class of highly qualified students into our doctoral program.   Admission to the doctoral program is highly competitive.  We only accept full-time students for the Ph.D program, and do not offer part-time options.  Five to ten percent of applicants are chosen.

The department is NOT accepting applications to the terminal MA program for Fall 2024 admission.

The Department offers two kinds of dual doctoral degrees in cooperation with two professional schools: Penn Carey Law and the Graduate School of Education . This requires a second admissions process.

Alternatively, Ph.D. students may choose to pursue a joint doctoral degree with an allied department within the School of Arts & Sciences (e.g., Africana Studies). This requires a simple memorandum of understanding between the two departments, and must be arranged within the first semester of matriculation.

When reading applications, we consider various things carefully:

• The match between the applicant's intellectual interests and the strengths of our faculty.

• The academic record, with particular attention given to grades in history and related subjects.

The University of Pennsylvania offers generous financial aid to doctoral students. Nearly all History Ph.D. students are recipients of standard five-year fellowships awarded by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences upon admission. These fellowships include tuition, fees, health insurance, and an annual stipend (scheduled to increase to $40,500 for the 2023–24 academic year). Factoring in cost of living in Philadelphia, these are among the best packages available to history students anywhere.

All applications to the Ph.D. program are automatically considered for Ph.D. fellowships.

The History Department is NOT accepting applications to the terminal MA program for Fall 2024.

All applications and all supporting materials must be submitted online between October 1 and December 1, 2023  for admission into the Ph.D. program in September 2024.  Students are notified of their admission status by late February/early March 2024. There is no spring or summer admission in History.

The online application portal closes December 1, 2023 at 11:59pm PST. The application and all supporting documents must be received by this deadline. You will not be able to submit or revise anything afterwards. Please do not mail any paper documents; we will we not accept them.

The Department does not require the GRE.

A complete application to the doctoral program consists of the following:

• Information in all the required fields in Penn's application portal.

• A personal statement (no more than 3 pages, double-spaced):

Please describe how your background and academic experiences have influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree and led you to apply to Penn. Your essay should detail your specific research interests and intellectual goals within your chosen field. Please provide information about your educational trajectory, intellectual curiosity and academic ambitions.

We suggest that you approach this statement as an intellectual autobiography that includes a proposed area of study. Which scholarly questions interest you most? Which books, primary sources, research projects, college courses, work experiences, or life experiences would you single out to explain how you arrived at those questions? In short, what brought you to the discipline of history, and why have you chosen the area you now propose to study?  In the last paragraph, please name Penn History faculty members with whom you would like to study. (Bear in mind that faculty at the assistant professor level may serve on advisory committees, but they cannot serve as main academic advisors or supervisors of dissertation committees.)  If you have overcome adversity and/or have had limited access to resources or opportunities in your field of study, please feel free to share how that has affected the course of your education.  We are interested in your lived experiences and how your particular perspective might contribute to the inclusive and dynamic learning community that Penn values and strives to create

• A writing sample (approximately 10-20 double-spaced pages): Submit a previously completed research essay, preferably but not necessarily one based on primary sources. This could be a course paper, a chapter from a senior thesis, etc. It does not have to match your proposed area of study. We want to see your best academic work, regardless of topic.

• T hree letters of recommendation submitted online by your referees.  These letters should preferably be all from professors who have taught you in history or related subjects, who know you well, and who can attest to your intellectual abilities, qualities in the classroom, and writing skills.  Recommendations from employers (unless they are in a field related to history) are generally not encouraged.  Please note: Interfolio packets are not accepted . Your referees must upload their letters of recommendation to Penn's application portal. If a recommender cannot or will not use our online system, we suggest you ask someone else who will. Letters will be read in electronic format only.

• Transcripts from any institution of higher education that has or will grant you a degree. They must be uploaded in PDF format. They can be official or unofficial copies. Should you be admitted, and should you accept, you will then be required to submit official copies from the institution(s).

• Proof of English Proficiency : Applicants with citizenship or permanent resident status in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand are not required to provide this, and their applications will automatically waive the requirement.  Citizens of other countries may satisfy this requirement by either 1) submitting proof of having graduated from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction (in most cases, your transcripts will suffice) or 2) submitting TOEFL (minimum score 100) or IELTS (minimum score 7).

• The application fee is $90 USD, payable via credit or debit card at the time of submission.

Application FEE WAIVERS are managed entirely by the Graduate Division of the School of Arts and Sciences, and individual departments do not have the authority to grant them.  To apply for a fee waiver, applicants should send a brief letter to Patricia Rea, Associate Director of Admissions, at [email protected] , stating the reason for the request.  This letter should be sent no later than November 15, 2023, and your application should be in process or near completion.  Do not request a fee waiver without having started your application.  Please be advised that the applicant must demonstrate a clear and compelling case of financial hardship.

When you are ready to apply, use Penn's application portal .

Successful applicants typically have a strong record of undergraduate achievement, familiarity with historical approaches and scholarship, and excellent writing, research, and analytical skills. Prior specialization in History is not required. To apply, you will need to submit the following:  — Completed Graduate School Online Application Form. — Statement of Purpose (uploaded with application)  (3-4 pages) describing the intended field(s) of study, the insights or experiences motivating the decision to specialize in this area, and the kinds of questions which the applicant hopes to explore; this statement should be as specific as possible about intended research topics and subject area(s) and indicate relevant faculty with whom they envision working. Once the offer of admission is made, it is at that time, that Official transcripts with degree verification MUST be submitted  ELECTRONICALLY from the issuing University to the History Department at:    [email protected] copying History’s Graduate Program Administrator .

NOTE: it is the responsibility of the applicant, including current or past Stony Brook University students, to order, and make arrangements for their official transcripts to be submitted ELECTRONICALLY to the Graduate School copying the History Department Program Administrator .

— Optional GRE scores:   GRE scores are no longer required for admission to the MA and PhD programs in History. However, if you wish to be considered for the Graduate Council Fellowship, please be aware that it does still currently require GRE scores.  To be eligible for this fellowship, one must be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US; successful GCF nominees typically have extremely high test scores, extremely strong GPAs, significant research experience, excellent letters, and a good fit to the strengths of the program.  We usually only have 1 or 2 applicants each year who meet all these criteria.

If you do choose to submit GRE scores in your application, they must be submitted directly from the  Graduate Record Examination  (GRE). The History subject test is not required. It is advisable, especially for financial aid applicants, if  one is taking the GRE, to take it no later than October,  to ensure that the review of application materials is not delayed. Funding All full-time PhD applicants are automatically considered for financial assistance from the History Department, in the form of a teaching assistantship or a graduate assistantship (pending budgetary approval). They also receive full tuition waivers, as long as they maintain their full-time status. There are no special forms to fill out for Departmental support. The History Department does not fund MA students. Typically, MA students seek financial assistance through Stony Brook University's Financial Aid Department.

Additional support is available to eligible PhD students in the form of fellowships. The History Department can nominate eligible students for Presidential Fellowships, created by the university president and used to recruit promising new doctoral students. The Department also awards several endowed fellowships generously created by private donors and foundations, such as the Evan Frankel Foundation Fellowship and the Gardiner Graduate Fellowship. The Gardiner Fellowship is awarded each year to a graduate student researching Early American history, with preference for aspects of local and regional history in which the Gardiner family  played an important role.

Entering PhD students in history may also be nominated by the admissions committee to compete for university-sponsored awards, namely Graduate Council Fellowships  and Turner Fellowships . If you wish to be considered for either of these financial opportunities, please indicate that on your application. Students wishing to be considered for these awards must be U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents. Turner Fellows must self-identify as a member of an underrepresented groups (such as African American, Native American, Hispanic, etc.) on their application. U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents are also eligible for other forms of financial aid, which are applied for via the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form .

Get Started Today

How to apply.

Applicants to the graduate program should use the online application , which is available on the Graduate School site.

Feel free to contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Professor Alexis Peri, at [email protected] , with additional questions.

Prospective students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents can apply for fee waivers for the PhD application or MA application at the Graduate School’s website. Please do not submit the application until you have received a decision regarding your fee waiver application.

We are particularly eager to recruit students from underrepresented groups (URGs). Students from these backgrounds, and from low-income backgrounds, are encouraged to apply for application fee waivers from the Graduate School, and there are additional financial aid packages available.

As of fall 2023, the History Department will not be requiring the GRE for applicants applying for admission to the PhD program. As part of the selection process, the Department may elect to interview some applicants about their academic interests and qualifications. Applicants will be individually notified if an interview is requested.

When considering applications to our MA and PhD program in History, our department takes a holistic, comprehensive approach, considering not only applicants’ cumulative GPAs but also personal statements, writing samples, and letters of recommendation among other criteria. We understand that applicants’ grades for Fall 2023 may have been adversely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, or that their transcripts may contain pass/fail credits rather than letter grades. Applicants will not be held at a disadvantage for COVID-related difficulties they experienced in Fall 2023.

The department accepts applications for September admission only . The deadline for PhD Fall 2024 applications is December 15, 2023 . The deadline for MA Fall 2024 applications is March 1, 2024 .

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement/statement of purpose
  • Writing sample (not more than 40 pages)
  • Statement on foreign language competence (a list of courses or other training you have completed in languages and an assessment of your reading ability in each language–terms such as “beginning”,”intermediate,” “advanced,” “fluent” are acceptable); this statement should be added to the Graduate School’s online application under Department-Requested Document.
  • Do not send any admissions materials to the History Department. Send supplementary application materials to: Admissions Office Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Boston University 705 Commonwealth Avenue, Suite 112 Boston, MA 02215
  • A $95 application fee must be paid in order for your application to be considered complete. This fee is non-refundable. Information on fee waivers for MA and PhD applicants is available on the Graduate School website.

As per GRS requirements, all applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo. Applicants are not required to submit English proficiency scores if they are a citizen of a country or territory where English is the sole official or de facto language, or, if they have or will have completed their undergraduate or graduate studies in such a country or territory. International applicants are encouraged to enclose in their application materials a short statement of how and why they have met these conditions, which exempt them from submitting test scores that demonstrate their proficiency in English.

Financial Assistance

All applicants accepted to the PhD program receive full fellowship funding for 5 years, including summer support. MA students are not eligible for financial aid. After one year of full-time coursework, PhD students serve as Teaching Fellows. To conduct research abroad, students may apply to the Graduate School for short-term and long-term research grants. The department also offers small travel grants to conduct research and attend conferences. PhD students in their fifth year with an approved Dissertation Prospectus qualify for a non-service fellowship to support full-time work on their dissertation.

The Admissions Process

The departmental Graduate Studies Committee consists of three faculty members. This committee reads and makes recommendations to the Graduate School on all applications. The process begins in January and continues until all applications received by deadline have been considered. Applications are not considered until they are complete, that is, have the requisite letters of recommendation, and relevant transcripts.  After waiting for any missing credentials to arrive, the department will send a notice that an application is incomplete; it is the applicant’s responsibility to make sure all materials are submitted. Admission decisions will be made by mid-April, and admitted MA students will have two weeks from the time of that notification to accept or decline the offer of admission.

Please also scroll down this page for our answers to some FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about graduate admissions.

Program Metrics

Boston University PhD profile pages offer statistical portraits across key metrics, which we hope will provide prospective Department of History PhD students a clear sense of our program.  We aim to give prospective students a sense of the probability that they will be admitted, how long it is likely to take them to complete the program if they matriculate, what jobs might await them upon receipt of their PhD and so forth.

The profile showcases a brief description of the program, and five-year (or more) trend data on: applications and offers, selectivity, entering cohort size, sex and ethnicity demographics, attrition rate, cumulative completion rate, median time to degree, and five-and ten-year out graduate employment outcomes.

Recent graduates of the department have pursued careers not only in the traditional areas of academic research and teaching but also in fields as diverse as library and museum work, journalism, consulting, government service, education, publishing, and business.

Why history at ashoka.

“I am a second year PhD scholar at the Department of history, Ashoka University. I work on the history of the Afghan communities in early modern South Asia. The PhD programme at Ashoka offers a lot of opportunities and resources to its scholars in the form of lectures, conferences, seminars, and colloquiums. For a person like me who started her PhD online due to pandemic, Ashoka has provided a safe space to work and to develop my ideas in a supportive community of faculty members and fellow research scholars. It was only through the efforts of the history department and the PhD cohort that things became a little easy and manageable virtually. The best part of studying at Ashoka for me is also how the university tries to foster a sense of community among its students and ensure that they have substantial access to resources. The PhD programme not only trains scholars to hone their research and skills but also to learn the logistical and pedagogical dimensions of teaching a class. This has really helped me to not only have a dialogue but also to freely express my thoughts and opinions.”

Akansha Singh

“The doctoral programme of the History department at Ashoka offers proper assistance, judicious guidance and sound intellectual friendships beyond the fetters of curriculum-oriented teaching and learning. Our department holds a very dynamic, inclusive and fertile academic environment when it comes to organizing scholarly symposiums, conferences, writing workshops or research colloquiums as they continue to enrich our understanding not only of the discipline of history but the larger academic scene in the first place. Moreover, the highly well-equipped library at Ashoka and the resourceful repository of Ashoka Archives of Contemporary India add to the delightful experiences of conducting research. I have been thoroughly enjoying the research-life here with all of my colleagues, friends and faculty members.”

Our three-year MFA program is designed to provide our students with the skills needed for creative development and professional success in traditional and conceptual-based practices, and/or teaching studio art as a future career. Under the tutelage of highly regarded artists and art historians, our talented students engage in research in the following areas:

Application Procedures & Policies

The application process opens on October 1st of each year and requires prospective students to successfully complete THREE steps (listed below). Please ensure you have submitted all documents by the February 15, 2024 deadline. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, regardless of the applicant’s merit.

To be considered, please submit the following:

  • A general application must be initiated through the Graduate School in order to be admitted into the University of Miami. Through the Graduate School, applicants will submit their personal contact information, request their three letters of recommendation, and pay the $85.00 application fee. The Grad School application can be found here .
  •  A specialized MFA application must next be submitted to the Department of Art & Art History via the department’s MFA Application Portal , which can be accessed here (or by clicking on hyperlinked text).

Once applicants have completed the informational fields in the portal, they will be asked to upload a portfolio, which must be a single/combined PDF file. The system will not permit you to upload multiple documents. As stated above, the portfolio should include the following:

  • A personal statement of interest in the MFA program at UM. In this essay, please describe your past experiences and why you feel you are ready to undertake graduate work at UM.

Things to Consider While Applying

As previously stated, assistantships are competitive and are not guaranteed with admission into the program. That having been said, students can be admitted into the program without department funding, though this requires him/her/they to pay out-of-pocket for the MFA degree.

Even with a Teaching Assistantship, studying in Miami is an expensive undertaking. For the average cost of attending UM as a graduate student (without financial aid), please click here .

If you are an international applicant, please click here to see additional instructions on how to submit foreign transcripts and TOEFL scores. If you need to complete the TOEFL, please have your scores sent directly to the department, or include official/notarized copies as additional pages in your MFA portfolio application.

The next application deadline is February 15, 2024 for admission to the 2023-24 academic year.
