Writing your research proposal

When applying to study for a PhD or MPhil in the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, you will typically need to send us an initial 500-word research proposal.

The content and structure of your research proposal will be influenced by the nature of the project you wish to pursue. The guidance and suggested headings provided here should help you to structure and present your ideas clearly.

Your initial research proposal

When writing your initial research proposal, you can either address it to the School generally, or to a specific supervisor if you have one in mind. 

Potential supervisors in the School will review your initial research proposal, and get in touch with you to discuss it. Your proposal may change following this conversation. Depending on the supervisor and the outcome of this discussion, you may be asked to produce a longer research proposal of between 2,000 and 4,000 words.

Tips on writing a research proposal

Before you write your research proposal, we strongly recommend that you check our  research page  and  individual supervisor profiles  to view our areas of expertise.

  • You should avoid the use of overly long sentences and technical jargon.
  • It is important that the proposed research is realistic and feasible so that the outcomes can be achieved within the scale of a typical research degree programme. This is usually three years full-time for a PhD (or two years for an MPhil). 
  • A strong research proposal can and should make a positive first impression about your potential to become a good researcher. It should demonstrate that your ideas are focused, interesting and realistic.

Although you should write your proposal yourself, it is best if you discuss its contents with your proposed supervisor before you submit it. If this is not possible, then try to get someone else (such as an academic at your current or previous institution) to read and comment on it to ensure that it is sufficiently clear.

Your proposal needs a clear working title that gives an indication of what you want to study. You are not committed to continuing with the same title once you begin your studies.

Research question

For many projects, you'll usually address one main question, which can sometimes be broken down into several sub-questions. However, it's OK to have two or three research questions where appropriate.

In your research proposal, you'll need to state your main research question(s), explain its significance, and locate it within the relevant literature, in order to set out the context into which your research will fit. You should only refer to research that is directly relevant to your proposal. 

Questions to address in your research proposal

You will need to address questions such as:

  • What is the general area in which you will be working, and the specific aspect(s) of that area that will be your focus of inquiry?
  • What is the problem, shortcoming, or gap in this area that you would like to address?
  • What is the main research question or aim that you want to address?
  • What are the specific objectives for the proposed research that follow from this?
  • Why is the proposed research significant, why does it matter (either theoretically or practically), and why does it excite you?
  • How does your work relate to other relevant research in the department?

Methodology

You will need to explain how you will go about answering your question (or achieving your aim), and why you will use your intended approach to address the question/aim. 

Questions you might need to address include:

  • What steps will you take and what methods will you use to address your question? For instance, do you plan to use quantitative or qualitative methods?
  • How will your proposed method provide a reliable answer to your question?
  • What sources or data will you use?
  • If your project involves an experimental approach, what specific hypothesis or hypotheses will you address?
  • What specific techniques will you use to test the hypothesis? For example, laboratory procedures, interviews, questionnaires, modelling, simulation, text analysis, use of secondary data sources.
  • What practical considerations are there? For example, what equipment, facilities, and other resources will be required?
  • What relevant skills and experience do you have with the proposed methods?
  • Will you need to collaborate with other researchers and organisations?
  • Are there particular ethical issues that will need to be considered (for example, all projects using human participants require ethical approval)?
  • Are there any potential problems or difficulties that you foresee (for example, delays in gaining access to special populations or materials) that might affect your rate of progress?

You will need to provide a rough timeline for the completion of your research to show that the project is achievable (given the facilities and resources required) in no more than three years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) for a PhD, and two years for an MPhil.

Expected outcomes

You need to say something about what the expected outcomes of your project would be.

How, for example, does it make a contribution to knowledge? How does it advance theoretical understanding? How might it contribute to policy or practice?

If you are aiming to study for a PhD, then you need to say how your proposed research will make an original contribution to knowledge. This is not essential if you are aiming to study for an MPhil, although you will still need to show originality in the application of knowledge.

List of references

You will need to provide a list of any key articles or texts that you have referred to in your proposal.

References should be listed in the appropriate style for your subject area (e.g. Harvard). You should only reference texts that you think are central to your proposed work, rather than a bibliography listing everything written on the subject. 

Format and proofreading

Make sure that your proposal is well structured and clearly written. It is important that you carefully check your proposal for typographical and spelling errors, consistency of style, and accuracy of references, before submitting it.

The proposal should be aesthetically well presented, and look professional (e.g. no font inconsistencies, headings clearly identifiable). If you include figures, then they should be accompanied by captions underneath).

Structure of a research proposal

A research proposal describes what you will investigate, why it’s important, and how you will conduct your research.

The format of a research proposal varies between fields, but most proposals will contain at least these elements:

Introduction

Literature review.

  • Research design

Reference list

While the sections may vary, the overall objective is always the same. A research proposal serves as a blueprint and guide for your research plan, helping you get organised and feel confident in the path forward you choose to take.

Academics often have to write research proposals to get funding for their projects. As a student, you might have to write a research proposal as part of a grad school application , or prior to starting your thesis or dissertation .

In addition to helping you figure out what your research can look like, a proposal can also serve to demonstrate why your project is worth pursuing to a funder, educational institution, or supervisor.

Research proposal length

The length of a research proposal can vary quite a bit. A bachelor’s or master’s thesis proposal can be just a few pages, while proposals for PhD dissertations or research funding are usually much longer and more detailed. Your supervisor can help you determine the best length for your work.

One trick to get started is to think of your proposal’s structure as a shorter version of your thesis or dissertation , only without the results , conclusion and discussion sections.

Writing a research proposal can be quite challenging, but a good starting point could be to look at some examples. We’ve included a few for you below.

Like your dissertation or thesis, the proposal will usually have a title page that includes:

  • The proposed title of your project
  • Your supervisor’s name
  • Your institution and department

The first part of your proposal is the initial pitch for your project. Make sure it succinctly explains what you want to do and why.

Your introduction should:

  • Introduce your topic
  • Give necessary background and context
  • Outline your  problem statement  and research questions

To guide your introduction , include information about:

  • Who could have an interest in the topic (e.g., scientists, policymakers)
  • How much is already known about the topic
  • What is missing from this current knowledge
  • What new insights your research will contribute
  • Why you believe this research is worth doing

As you get started, it’s important to demonstrate that you’re familiar with the most important research on your topic. A strong literature review  shows your reader that your project has a solid foundation in existing knowledge or theory. It also shows that you’re not simply repeating what other people have already done or said, but rather using existing research as a jumping-off point for your own.

In this section, share exactly how your project will contribute to ongoing conversations in the field by:

  • Comparing and contrasting the main theories, methods, and debates
  • Examining the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Explaining how will you build on, challenge, or synthesise prior scholarship

Following the literature review, restate your main  objectives . This brings the focus back to your own project. Next, your research design or methodology section will describe your overall approach, and the practical steps you will take to answer your research questions.

To finish your proposal on a strong note, explore the potential implications of your research for your field. Emphasise again what you aim to contribute and why it matters.

For example, your results might have implications for:

  • Improving best practices
  • Informing policymaking decisions
  • Strengthening a theory or model
  • Challenging popular or scientific beliefs
  • Creating a basis for future research

Last but not least, your research proposal must include correct citations for every source you have used, compiled in a reference list . To create citations quickly and easily, you can use our free APA citation generator .

Some institutions or funders require a detailed timeline of the project, asking you to forecast what you will do at each stage and how long it may take. While not always required, be sure to check the requirements of your project.

If you are applying for research funding, chances are you will have to include a detailed budget. This shows your estimates of how much each part of your project will cost.

Make sure to check what type of costs the funding body will agree to cover. For each item, include:

  • Cost : exactly how much money do you need?
  • Justification : why is this cost necessary to complete the research?
  • Source : how did you calculate the amount?

To determine your budget, think about:

  • Travel costs : do you need to go somewhere to collect your data? How will you get there, and how much time will you need? What will you do there (e.g., interviews, archival research)?
  • Materials : do you need access to any tools or technologies?
  • Help : do you need to hire any research assistants for the project? What will they do, and how much will you pay them?

Once you’ve decided on your research objectives , you need to explain them in your paper, at the end of your problem statement.

Keep your research objectives clear and concise, and use appropriate verbs to accurately convey the work that you will carry out for each one.

A research aim is a broad statement indicating the general purpose of your research project. It should appear in your introduction at the end of your problem statement , before your research objectives.

Research objectives are more specific than your research aim. They indicate the specific ways you’ll address the overarching aim.

A PhD, which is short for philosophiae doctor (doctor of philosophy in Latin), is the highest university degree that can be obtained. In a PhD, students spend 3–5 years writing a dissertation , which aims to make a significant, original contribution to current knowledge.

A PhD is intended to prepare students for a career as a researcher, whether that be in academia, the public sector, or the private sector.

A master’s is a 1- or 2-year graduate degree that can prepare you for a variety of careers.

All master’s involve graduate-level coursework. Some are research-intensive and intend to prepare students for further study in a PhD; these usually require their students to write a master’s thesis . Others focus on professional training for a specific career.

Critical thinking refers to the ability to evaluate information and to be aware of biases or assumptions, including your own.

Like information literacy , it involves evaluating arguments, identifying and solving problems in an objective and systematic way, and clearly communicating your ideas.

Whether you’re nearing the end of your degree and your dissertation is on the horizon, or you’re planning to apply for a PhD program, chances are you’ll need to craft a convincing research proposal . If you’re on this page, you’re probably unsure exactly what the research proposal is all about. Well, you’ve come to the right place.

What is a research proposal?

Simply put, a research proposal is a structured, formal document that explains what you plan to research (your research topic), why it’s worth researching (your justification), and how  you plan to investigate it (your methodology). 

The purpose of the research proposal (its job, so to speak) is to convince  your research supervisor, committee or university that your research is  suitable  (for the requirements of the degree program) and  manageable  (given the time and resource constraints you will face). 

The most important word here is “ convince ” – in other words, your research proposal needs to  sell  your research idea (to whoever is going to approve it). If it doesn’t convince them (of its suitability and manageability), you’ll need to revise and resubmit . This will cost you valuable time, which will either delay the start of your research or eat into its time allowance (which is bad news). 

A research proposal is a  formal document that explains what you plan to research , why it's worth researching and how you'll do it.

What goes into a research proposal?

A good dissertation or thesis proposal needs to cover the “ what “, “ why ” and” how ” of the proposed study. Let’s look at each of these attributes in a little more detail:

Your proposal needs to clearly articulate your research topic . This needs to be specific and unambiguous . Your research topic should make it clear exactly what you plan to research and in what context. Here’s an example of a well-articulated research topic:

An investigation into the factors which impact female Generation Y consumer’s likelihood to promote a specific makeup brand to their peers: a British context

As you can see, this topic is extremely clear. From this one line we can see exactly:

  • What’s being investigated – factors that make people promote or advocate for a brand of a specific makeup brand
  • Who it involves – female Gen-Y consumers
  • In what context – the United Kingdom

So, make sure that your research proposal provides a detailed explanation of your research topic . If possible, also briefly outline your research aims and objectives , and perhaps even your research questions (although in some cases you’ll only develop these at a later stage). Needless to say, don’t start writing your proposal until you have a clear topic in mind , or you’ll end up waffling and your research proposal will suffer as a result of this.

As we touched on earlier, it’s not good enough to simply propose a research topic – you need to justify why your topic is original . In other words, what makes it  unique ? What gap in the current literature does it fill? If it’s simply a rehash of the existing research, it’s probably not going to get approval – it needs to be fresh.

But,  originality  alone is not enough. Once you’ve ticked that box, you also need to justify why your proposed topic is  important . In other words, what value will it add to the world if you achieve your research aims?

As an example, let’s look at the sample research topic we mentioned earlier (factors impacting brand advocacy). In this case, if the research could uncover relevant factors, these findings would be very useful to marketers in the cosmetics industry, and would, therefore, have commercial value . That is a clear justification for the research.

So, when you’re crafting your research proposal, remember that it’s not enough for a topic to simply be unique. It needs to be useful and value-creating – and you need to convey that value in your proposal. It’s all good and well to have a great topic that’s original and valuable, but you’re not going to convince anyone to approve it without discussing the practicalities – in other words:

  • How will you actually undertake your research (i.e., your methodology)?
  • Is your research methodology appropriate given your research aims?
  • Is your approach manageable given your constraints (time, money, etc.)?

While it’s generally not expected that you’ll have a fully fleshed-out methodology at the proposal stage, you’ll likely still need to provide a high-level overview of your research methodology . Here are some important questions you’ll need to address in your research proposal:

  • Will you take a qualitative , quantitative or mixed -method approach?
  • What sampling strategy will you adopt?
  • How will you collect your data (e.g., interviews, surveys, etc)?
  • How will you analyse your data (e.g., descriptive and inferential statistics , content analysis, discourse analysis, etc, .)?
  • What potential limitations will your methodology carry?

So, be sure to give some thought to the practicalities of your research and have at least a basic methodological plan before you start writing up your proposal. How To Structure A Research Proposal

Now that we’ve covered the key points that need to be addressed in a proposal, you may be wondering, “ But how is a research proposal structured? “.

While the exact structure and format required for a research proposal differs from university to university, there are four “essential ingredients” that commonly make up the structure of a research proposal:

  • A rich introduction and background to the proposed research
  • An initial literature review covering the existing research
  • An overview of the proposed research methodology
  • A discussion regarding the practicalities (project plans, timelines, etc.)

Proposal Writing FAQs

How long should a research proposal be.

This varies tremendously, depending on the university, the field of study (e.g., social sciences vs natural sciences), and the level of the degree (e.g. undergraduate, Masters or PhD) – so it’s always best to check with your university what their specific requirements are before you start planning your proposal.

As a rough guide, a formal research proposal at Masters-level often ranges between 2000-3000 words, while a PhD-level proposal can be far more detailed, ranging from 5000-8000 words. In some cases, a rough outline of the topic is all that’s needed, while in other cases, universities expect a very detailed proposal that essentially forms the first three chapters of the dissertation or thesis.

A solid psychology education should lead to all kinds of outcomes related to analytical skills, statistical reasoning, and research design. One of the core skills that I try to cultivate in my students is the ability to write a clear and concise research proposal. Being able to write a solid research proposal demonstrates the following qualities:

* An understanding of some theoretical concepts in the behavioral sciences

* The ability to organize one's ideas in a coherent and efficient way

* The ability to get to the foundation of a set of research ideas

* The ability to write clearly and concisely in a scientific manner

"Evolutionary psychology is a research-based enterprise. And learning about evolutionary psychology tends to lead people to develop hypotheses about human nature. For this assignment, you are to write a brief paper that does the following:

  • Articulates a hypothesis based on evolutionary reasoning
  • Describes methods that would test this hypothesis
  • Includes predicted outcomes and implications

Importantly, this paper is to be no more than two pages—printed on two sides of a single page. And it should be double-spaced.

This kind of assignment, forcing you to get your ideas reduced in a small space matches the kinds of assignments that professionals have all the time—this assignment will help prepare you for this kind of assignment in your future."

Research Proposal: A Proposed Study on the Mental Health Effects of Outdoor Experiences

Written by the SUNY New Paltz Spring 2018 Evolutionary Psychology Class

The evolutionary psychological perspective on human behavior suggests that instances of evolutionary mismatch may lead to adverse psychological functioning (e.g., Geher, 2014). Mismatch can exist in multiple domains, including nutritional offerings, exercise, community size, technology, transportation, and the nature of one’s physical environment—among many others.

One important way that modern environments are mismatched to ancestral environments pertains to the proportion of time that people spend in the out of doors. In fact, many evolutionists have made the case that humans have a natural love of the living world (see Wilson, 1984). Based on this reasoning, it may be the case that increased time spent in the outdoors leads to positive mental health outcomes. On the other hand, we might predict that increased time spent in human-made, non-natural environments might have adverse mental health outcomes.

Several mental health outcomes have been documented as important in all kinds of human psychological functioning. In particular, this research will focus on depressive tendencies, tendencies toward anxiety , and general psychological well-being. The basic prediction is that increased out-of-door experiences will correspond to less depression and anxiety and higher scores on a measure of well-being.

This study will utilize a randomized between-groups design using 200 relatively fit American adults ranging in age from 18-34 selected from Southern California. Using a random-assignment process, participants will be assigned to either (a) the outdoor condition or (b) the indoor condition.

Participants in the two experimental conditions will all be included in a climbing camp for two weeks. The outdoor participants will be at an all-outside version of the camp in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Southern California in September. The indoor participants will be at an all-indoor version of the camp at an indoor climbing gym for the same two weeks. Importantly, these climbing experiences will be overseen by the same Climbing Camp with the same activities and personnel.

This methodology would allow for the isolation of the “out of doors” variable and will have participants across groups have the same experiences otherwise. Given the random assignment to experimental conditions, this methodology would allow for an examination of the specific effects of the outdoor experience.

To measure anxiety, Liebowitz’s (1987) measure of social anxiety will be used. To measure depressive tendencies, Kessler et al.’s (2003) measure will be used. We will create a 5-item Likert scale of subjective well-being that participants will also complete.

Anticipated Results

Across the three outcome measures, including social anxiety, depressive tendencies, and subjective well-being, it is predicted that the outdoor group will score as less anxious, less depressed, and as higher in subjective well-being. These results will be examined using three between-groups t-tests.

Potential Implications

Evolutionists are interested in the mismatches between modern conditions and ancestral conditions. Simply being in the out-of-doors or not is a classic mismatch that surrounds us all the time, often unbeknownst to ourselves. The experimental design here would allow us to zero in on the effects of the outdoor experience as it relates to mental health outcomes, controlling for individual differences between groups.

If the predicted pattern of results is obtained, then we would have strong evidence suggesting that people function best when they are provided with outdoor experiences. Such a pattern would support an evolutionary-mismatch approach to understanding the interface of people with their physical environments.

Research proposal

Your research proposal is your opportunity to show your prospective supervisor that you have interesting ideas, and that you have some idea of how to test them.

It should consist of about two sides of A4, including references and it should include:

  • clear empirical objective
  • some idea of the research methods you would use
  • some theoretical background

Firstly you need to lay out the theoretical background to your research question, and then provide a rationale for testing a hypothesis or two. You should briefly outline your methods, your sample, and the various techniques you hope to use. Finally give a brief statement of how the data will be analysed, and outline what various findings might lead to.

The purpose of the research proposal is to help you organise your ideas about your major research project, and to enable you to get feedback on what you are planning to do. It is worth putting in careful thought at this stage: it will mean that the project is more likely to run smoothly in the long run, and much of what you write in it can eventually be recycled into the final thesis write-up. The proposal is also needed for NHS ethics applications.

The proposal is a course requirement, but is not an assessed piece of work. It is due early in Term 1 of Year 2 (the date will be announced). Please submit an electronic copy to the Research Administrator (following the procedure detailed on the Project Support Moodle site).

There is no formal word limit (but conciseness is essential): we suggest that you aim for around 2500 words, plus references and any necessary appendices. Format it double-spaced, and include page numbers so that reviewers can easily refer back to specific points. Since it is not assessed work, it does not need your code number; please put your name on it.

Some sample proposals from previous years are available on the 'Proposal' (Topic 4) section of the Research Project Support Moodle. 

The structure and content of the proposal is similar to that of the introduction and method sections of a journal article:

A title page with (1) the provisional title of the project (this can be modified later on), (2) your name, (3) your internal and external supervisors, (4) the setting where the study is likely to take place and (5) the date. If you are doing a joint project with other trainees, this should be stated here and the other trainees should be named. (Including all of this information on the title page is very helpful for the course's administrative purposes.)

The introduction (3 or 4 pages) states what the research topic is and why it is important. It succinctly reviews previous research in the area and relevant psychological theory, and summarises the rationale for the intended study. The introduction should end with one or more clearly stated research questions or hypotheses.

The method section (3 or 4 pages) describes in detail the proposed research methods: the setting, participants, sample size, research design, measures, ethical considerations, and data analysis procedures. For quantitative research, the sample size needs to be determined by a power calculation, which should be reported here (a separate document on power calculations is on the Project Support Moodle site). Measures that are not well known should be included as an appendix. For qualitative research, describe your interview schedule (append a draft) and your proposed method of analysis, including the types of "credibility checks" that you propose to use.

The service user involvement section (one or two or paragraphs) describes how the needs and views of service users or other relevant members of the public have shaped or will shape your project. This could include examples of service users influencing: (1) the choice of topic to be researched; (2) decisions about methodology; (3) the design of materials such as invitation letters and participant information sheets; (4) the design of a qualitative interview schedule, and (5) the ethics of the research. Please outline any plans for service user involvement later in the project.  Remember, whilst there are formal ways of eliciting service user views, such as the use of focus groups and services such as FAST-R ( Feasibility And Support to Timely recruitment for Research ), informal sources of information are also valuable, and can be described here. This might include conversations with individual service users, experiences from clinical work, or interactions that take place on-line.

Whilst we strongly encourage trainees to use service user input when developing their research, this is not obligatory. Sometimes consultation with service users and other members of the public is not necessary, for example in some studies of healthy volunteers. If there has been no input from service users or members of the public, please use this section to state this, and briefly (a couple of sentences) explain why. 

The feasibility section has a brief appraisal of how realistic your project is in practical terms, particularly with regard to recruiting participants. Many trainees (and their supervisors!) tend to be over-optimistic at this stage of the project, and it is a good idea to address potential recruitment problems at the outset. You should also include a fallback plan in case things go pear-shaped (which, sadly, in clinical research they often do). It would be helpful if you provided an estimate of what the smallest viable sample size would be, so that we (and you) have an idea of what a worst-case scenario might look like. A general timetable for the project is given in the guidelines for the major research project . If you anticipate any major departures from this, give details and a rationale.

The joint working section is, of course, only required if you are proposing a joint project. In this section provide a brief outline of what your anticipated contribution to the overall study will be, and what will be done by others. There should be a statement of how your research question(s) and analyses will be distinct from those of other students involved in the project. It will be helpful to consult the course guidelines on joint projects when planning any joint study. 

The institutional arrangements , e.g., the setting, and who has agreed to be your internal and external supervisors.

The costings section sets out any substantial expenses that the project may entail. Note that the Department has limited funds and does not normally fund projects costing more than £250 over two years (see the course document on research funding ). If your project is likely to cost more than this,  the course may possibly  be able to provide some additional funding up to £400, although this cannot be guaranteed. It is your responsibility to secure additional funding for expenses beyond that allocated by the course.

The reference list gives all cited works. (It is important to check that this is complete, because reviewers may consult some of your references to understand the background to your study.)

Appendices include measures not in common use, draft qualitative interview schedules, etc.

Supervisors' input

Research proposals usually need to go through several drafts. Show your internal and external supervisors a draft early enough so that you can incorporate their comments into a revised draft before submission.

Review of the proposal

The proposal will be read by one of the academic staff, and will be discussed at a proposals review meeting in October. The resultant written feedback that you receive (towards the end of October) will give you a clear indication of the general feasibility of your project, and suggest any changes that will need to be made before it goes ahead. 

This process counts as the "peer review" that is required for all NHS ethics applications. Therefore, once your proposal has passed the review stage, those of you applying for NHS ethics should contact Will Mandy to ask for a letter confirming that your project has been successfully peer reviewed.

A pilot study, also known as a feasibility study, is a small-scale preliminary study conducted before the main research to check the feasibility or improve the research design.

Pilot studies can be very important before conducting a full-scale research project, helping design the research methods and protocol.

How Does it Work?

Pilot studies are a fundamental stage of the research process. They can help identify design issues and evaluate a study’s feasibility, practicality, resources, time, and cost before the main research is conducted.

It involves selecting a few people and trying out the study on them. It is possible to save time and, in some cases, money by identifying any flaws in the procedures designed by the researcher.

A pilot study can help the researcher spot any ambiguities (i.e., unusual things), confusion in the information given to participants, or problems with the task devised.

Sometimes the task is too hard, and the researcher may get a floor effect because none of the participants can score at all or can complete the task – all performances are low.

The opposite effect is a ceiling effect, when the task is so easy that all achieve virtually full marks or top performances and are “hitting the ceiling.”

This enables researchers to predict an appropriate sample size, budget accordingly, and improve the study design before performing a full-scale project.

Pilot studies also provide researchers with preliminary data to gain insight into the potential results of their proposed experiment.

However, pilot studies should not be used to test hypotheses since the appropriate power and sample size are not calculated. Rather, pilot studies should be used to assess the feasibility of participant recruitment or study design.

By conducting a pilot study, researchers will be better prepared to face the challenges that might arise in the larger study. They will be more confident with the instruments they will use for data collection.

Multiple pilot studies may be needed in some studies, and qualitative and/or quantitative methods may be used.

To avoid bias, pilot studies are usually carried out on individuals who are as similar as possible to the target population but not on those who will be a part of the final sample.

Feedback from participants in the pilot study can be used to improve the experience for participants in the main study. This might include reducing the burden on participants, improving instructions, or identifying potential ethical issues.

Experiment Pilot Study

In a pilot study with an experimental design , you would want to ensure that your measures of these variables are reliable and valid.

You would also want to check that you can effectively manipulate your independent variables and that you can control for potential confounding variables.

A pilot study allows the research team to gain experience and training, which can be particularly beneficial if new experimental techniques or procedures are used.

Questionnaire Pilot Study

It is important to conduct a questionnaire pilot study for the following reasons:
  • Check that respondents understand the terminology used in the questionnaire.
  • Check that emotive questions are not used, as they make people defensive and could invalidate their answers.
  • Check that leading questions have not been used as they could bias the respondent’s answer.
  • Ensure that the questionnaire can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. If it’s too long, respondents may lose interest or not have enough time to complete it, which could affect the response rate and the data quality.

By identifying and addressing issues in the pilot study, researchers can reduce errors and risks in the main study. This increases the reliability and validity of the main study’s results.

Do not guarantee the success of the main study.

Contamination (ie: if data from the pilot study or pilot participants are included in the main study results).

Funding bodies may be reluctant to fund a further study if the pilot study results are published.

Do not have the power to assess treatment effects due to small sample size.

  • Viscocanalostomy: A Pilot Study (Carassa, Bettin, Fiori, & Brancato, 1998)
  • WHO International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia (Sartorius, Shapiro, Kimura, & Barrett, 1972)
  • Stephen LaBerge of Stanford University ran a series of experiments in the 80s that investigated lucid dreaming. In 1985, he performed a pilot study that demonstrated that time perception is the same as during wakefulness. Specifically, he had participants go into a state of lucid dreaming and count out ten seconds, signaling the start and end with pre-determined eye movements measured with the EOG.
  • Negative Word-of-Mouth by Dissatisfied Consumers: A Pilot Study (Richins, 1983)
  • A pilot study and randomized controlled trial of the mindful self‐compassion program (Neff & Germer, 2013)
  • Pilot study of secondary prevention of posttraumatic stress disorder with propranolol (Pitman et al., 2002)
  • In unstructured observations, the researcher records all relevant behavior without a system. There may be too much to record, and the behaviors recorded may not necessarily be the most important, so the approach is usually used as a pilot study to see what type of behaviors would be recorded.

Thank you for submitting your proposal for the 2024 annual convention in New Orleans, LA. The convention is an outstanding venue in which to showcase your research and practice. We are especially seeking advanced-level presentations that are related to the theme of the convention and will appeal to seasoned practitioners and assist them in delivering the highest quality, evidence-based practices in schools.  

Proposal Deadlines and Timeline

The online submission process will ask for the names and information for the PRIMARY PRESENTER, SECONDARY PRESENTER(S) and CONTRIBUTORS. Each of these categories is defined below.

PRIMARY PRESENTER: This individual is the person submitting the information online and will be listed first in the program book for the session. Primary presenters are responsible for:

  • Registering for the full convention by the November 20, 2024 , deadline (fee required). If a primary presenter does not register by the deadline, the presentation will be canceled.
  • Communicating all deadlines and procedures to secondary presenters.
  • Communicating with contributors (other authors of the session material who will not be attending the session) regarding the order of contribution listed in the program book.

SECONDARY PRESENTERS: These individuals are authors of the session material who are committed to attending the session and registering for the full convention. Individuals should be included as secondary presenters ONLY if they actually will present the session. Secondary presenters are responsible for:

  • Registering for the full convention by the November 20, 2024 , deadline (fee required). Secondary presenters who do not register by the deadline will be listed in the program as contributors, rather than as presenters.” No changes in status will possible after the November 20 , 2024 , presenter registration deadline.

CONTRIBUTORS: These individuals are authors of the work who will NOT attend the convention. Please use good judgment in the listing of contributors (considering the maximums per session listed below); only those who would be listed as authors on a formal publication of the material included in the session should be included. All contributors’ names will be included in the final program; please list contributors in the order you would like them listed in the program. 

You will enter full information about the primary presenter first and then be prompted to enter secondary presenters’ and session contributors’ names/information after you click on the “Submit” button.

Be prepared to enter the following information for yourself and any secondary presenters:

  • Employer/Affiliation/University, city, state
  • NASP membership number(s), if applicable. The accuracy of this information is very important, as it will be used in the convention final program and to determine the membership status/registration fee for secondary presenter(s).

All proposals must be submitted online. It will be helpful to prepare all of the information requested below BEFORE going online to submit your proposal.

  • PAPERS (PA): (50-minute presentations) maximum of four total presenters and four total contributors : Papers address topics relevant to the profession and inform research and/or practice. Although a wide range of topics is acceptable, information should be based on sound evidence and support data-based decision-making in the field.
  • PRACTITIONER CONVERSATIONS (PC): (50-minute sessions) maximum of two total presenters and two total contributors: These sessions are designed for smaller groups, ideally about 30, to come together around topics that may be less mainstream, but relevant to some. The presenter acts as a facilitator, providing a brief introduction of the topic and then guiding discussion among participants. The purpose of these sessions is to create an environment where practitioners with similar issues can come together to discuss these and interact together. To that end, when considering submitting a proposal for a PC session, please keep in mind that it is better to choose a niche topic than a more popular or mainstream topic that more participants are likely to attend, risking an overcrowded session. Topics that address narrow or more focused issues tend to achieve better results for PC sessions. For example, “Social Skills Interventions for Students With Autism” (which may be more suited to a Paper session) is likely to be a mainstream topic that could attract far more than the desired 30 attendees; whereas “Navigating Faculty-Administrator Roles in Higher Education” is a more focused, narrow topic that is more likely to attract a smaller crowd, which will facilitate the flow of conversation.
  • SYMPOSIA (SY): (80-minute presentations) maximum of ten total presenters and ten total contributors : These sessions provide several (sometimes contrasting) views on a single topic or issue. Typically, three brief presentations are made and then a discussant provides reactions to each of the three. Ample time for questions from participants should be provided.
  • POSTERS (PO): (90-minute presentations) maximum of four total presenters and four total contributors : Posters are visual presentations with 40–80 Posters occurring simultaneously in each timeslot. Each presenter is provided a 4’ x 8’ board on which to provide a visual display of information. Please note that multiple, related Posters are presented simultaneously in thematic blocks. If you submit more than one Poster session proposal on similar topics, those accepted will be scheduled in the same time block and located next to each other.
  • MINI-SKILLS (MS): (1 hour, 50-minute presentations) maximum of four total presenters and four total contributors : These sessions are designed to provide skills and information that will be immediately applicable by practitioners (“tools to use on Monday morning”). These sessions are especially appropriate for seasoned practitioners to share their knowledge with other practitioners. The session length is sufficient for a comprehensive presentation focused on skill development. Presenters should leave ample time for questions and exchanges among participants.
  • NASP CONVENTION WORKSHOPS (WS): These half-day and full-day sessions require attendees to pay a fee (in addition to the convention registration fee). These proposals are reviewed in a separate process; see separate instructions if you wish to submit a proposal for a NASP Convention.

Your title may be a maximum of 10 words and should appear in initial caps, as in the following example: Response-to-Intervention: Making It Work in Secondary Schools. A good title captures readers’ attention and clearly previews session content. (Please be sure your title remains exactly consistent in all documents submitted.)  Do not self-identify in the title by including a title page with authors listed.

Tips For Writing Attention-Grabbing Session Titles and Descriptions

The SUMMARY is used to determine acceptance for the convention program. Therefore, it should be carefully prepared. Each SUMMARY is read by three reviewers (please note: reviewers only see your summary; they do not see the description). The review committee is composed of practitioners and trainers. All decisions of the reviewers are final. SAMPLE SUMMARY There are several important considerations in the preparation of the SUMMARY.

Do not include ANY information that identifies the proposal’s presenters and other authors in the SUMMARY. Proposals go through a masked review process and those that identify authors or contributors in any way are disqualified. There are common mistakes made in this area so, please attend to the following:

Do NOT include author name(s) in the file name of the uploaded SUMMARY document (e.g., SmithNASP25.docx).

Do not use an author name as part of a running head in the document.

Remember to turn off and clear “track changes” from the document (if track changes remain, the author’s name is typically visible in the edits)

Do not identify an author in describing related work. That is, rather than writing, “Our prior work (Smith, 2019) showed…”, simply say, “Smith (2019) showed…”

Do not include learner objectives you will be prompted/required to submit a minimum of three and a maximum of six (depending on the length of your session) Learner Objectives for your presentation in separate fields.

The SUMMARY must not exceed 800 words. This limit excludes the title and supporting documentation (e.g., tables, figures, references), but does include appendices. Please be selective in the inclusion of supporting documentation; include only information that is essential to the evaluation of your proposal.

Provide clear information that will allow reviewers to rate the proposal fairly. The proposal is rated on three dimensions:

Clarity and organization of content: This criterion refers to the organization and clarity of the written proposal. A clear, logical, organized, well-written proposal usually leads to a high quality presentation. Reviewers should be able to easily understand what you plan to present and how you will present it.

Evidence base: This criterion refers to the quality of the evidence on which the proposal is based.

If the proposal involves results of a formal research study , sufficient information should be provided so that reviewers can easily identify the use of good methodology (e.g., with respect to subject selection, procedures, analyses) and conclusions appropriate to those methods (e.g., causal inferences are avoided in a correlation study). Although it is acceptable to submit a proposal for a study in progress, do NOT submit unless you are certain that the study will be complete in time for the presentation.

If the proposal does not involve the results of a formal research study, reviewers should be able to see that the information to be presented is drawn from a sound theoretical or evidence base and/or has been assessed for efficacy in some way. Field-based, practitioner-led presentations that provide examples of “best practice” and implementation of the NASP Practice Model are encouraged. These proposals should include evidence of evaluation through progress monitoring, single subject, multiple baseline, consumer satisfaction, or similar data.

Quality of learner objectives for participants: This criterion refers to the degree to which the proposal includes appropriate learner objectives for session attendees.  That is, they should clearly indicate what benefits attendees should expect as a result of participating in the session. The learner objectives should be clearly stated and clearly related to the proposal content. In addition, the objectives should be relevant for school psychologists. The rating in this area does not consider the popularity of the topic. That is, even if the topic of your session is relevant to only a specialized group (e.g., school psychologists who work in higher education, or school psychologists who work with students with low incidence disabilities), the proposal should receive a high rating in this area if detailed, relevant learner objectives are provided.

Prepare the SUMMARY as a Word document with a file extension of .doc, .docx, or .rtf. The file must be typed in a 10- or 12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced, and formatted to be printable on 8½” x 11” paper. The exact TITLE of the presentation must appear at the beginning of the summary , but DO NOT include any identifying information about the authors or presenters. Be sure the SUMMARY does not exceed 800 words. Any SUMMARY that contains identifying information and/or exceeds 800 words will be disqualified. Be especially careful if you have “cut and pasted” from your description to avoid the identification of the authors. Also, be sure you have removed any “tracked changes” from the final file, as these can be visible to the reviewers. Be sure that the description is NOT in the same document as the summary.

The DESCRIPTION of all accepted proposals will be published in the 2025 convention Final Program. The purpose of the DESCRIPTION is to attract attendees to your session; it must meet the following criteria:

  • MAXIMUM of 30 words; fewer words are preferred
  • Clear and accurate description of session content (e.g., research study, literature review, program evaluation)

NASP Presentation Policies and Procedures

Acknowledgment of proposal receipt: Once you submit your proposal, you should receive an e-mail message within minutes acknowledging its receipt and contents. (Note:  You will be asked to update your contact information with NASP once you log into the membership system, so be sure your e-mail information is correct.). 

Notes Regarding Presenter Names:  If the name of a presenter changes after the proposal submission closes, that presenter must register for the convention under the exact name used in the proposal or notify the NASP Meetings and Conventions Department of the name change. If the name used on the proposal differs from the one used to register for the convention (i.e., using a maiden name as part of the last name one time but not the other, or using a formal first name one time and a nickname the other) the NASP registration system will not recognize the registrant as the same person who submitted a presentation proposal and will assume that *they are NOT registered for the convention. If this problem occurs with a primary presenter, the presentation will be canceled. If it occurs with secondary presenters, they will be listed as contributors.

Notes Regarding Presenter Registration:  Primary and secondary presenter(s) must register for the convention under the same NASP account used on the presentation proposal or notify the NASP Meetings and Conventions Department if they accidentally registered using a different account. If the Account ID differs during the proposal submission and convention registration processes, the NASP registration system will not recognize the individual as the same person and will assume that they are NOT registered for the convention. in this event, primary presenters’ presentations will be canceled, and secondary presenters will be listed as contributors.

Maximum number of proposals : Due to scheduling/space limitations, individuals may submit a maximum of two (2) proposals for review on which they are the PRIMARY presenter.

Maximum number of authors : Please limit the authors on your proposal to those who had a central role in the conceptualization and production of the work. That is, only those who would be considered an author of a formal publication of the work should be included. Papers, Posters, and Mini-Skills presentations may include no more than FOUR total contributors and FOUR total presenters; Practitioner Conversation sessions may include no more than TWO total contributors and TWO total presenters; Symposia may include no more than TEN total contributors and TEN total presenters. The Primary Presenter is responsible for correctly listing contributors. Any contributor who is attending the convention MUST register and be listed as a presenter. Authors who will not attend the convention are not required to register and will be listed as contributors (not presenters).

IMPORTANT SCHEDULING NOTE: When presenters appear on multiple sessions, there is the possibility of unavoidable conflicts in scheduling. Only PRIMARY presenters are guaranteed that their two sessions will not conflict. No schedule changes are possible based on conflicts for secondary presenters. Please consider this limitation before you submit.

Presentation Room Set-Ups:

All presentation rooms for Mini-Skills , Papers, Practitioner Conversations, and Symposia will be set theater-style, to the maximum capacity of each room, with Practitioner Conversations taking place in the smallest rooms, due to the nature of this session type, which involves more time for discussion than for the introductory presentation . NASP will provide an LCD projector, laptop computer, screen, and microphone ONLY in each of these presentation rooms.

I nternet access is not provided by NASP in any presentation rooms, due to the extremely high costs of this service.  Please note that Mini-Skills, Paper, Practitioner Conversations and Symposium presenters will be responsible to make arrangements for any other desired audio-visual equipment or Internet service, all of which will be at the presenters’ expense.

NASP Convention Workshop presentation rooms will be set in schoolroom style. NASP will provide an LCD projector, screen, and microphone ONLY ( no laptop ) in each workshop presentation room. I nternet access is not provided by NASP in workshop presentation rooms due to the extremely high costs of this service.  Please note that workshop presenters will be responsible to make arrangements for any other desired audio-visual equipment or Internet service, all of which will be at the presenters’ expense.

Information about ordering additional audio-visual equipment will be forwarded to presenters from NASP Headquarters. 

Handouts: Presenters are responsible for providing handouts for session participants. The cost of any photocopying of materials for participants is the sole responsibility of the presenters. Presenters MUST post their handouts online for attendees who were not present for the convention or attended other sessions. IMPORTANT: Presenters must provide handouts on-site (and not rely solely on uploading to the website), as only NASP members have access to the online handouts. Feedback from attendees suggests that presenters tend not to bring enough handouts and many people are disappointed. Please bring ample handouts to the session. NASP staff will provide information about the maximum capacity for your session room.

Proposal Submission Checklist:

You are now ready to submit your proposal.  Please have the following information ready:

  • Your NASP ID: If you are currently a NASP member or have been a member or NCSP in the last ten years, please click "Log In" and enter your username and password.  (Don't know your login information?  Click "Reset your password" if NASP has your current e-mail address, or contact [email protected] for assistance.) If you have never been a member or NCSP and have never created an account on the NASP site, click "Create an Account."   
  • The names, affiliations, city, state, email address and NASP ID of the primary presenter and any secondary presenters (that is, those who are actually attending the convention and will present the session). 
  • The names (no affiliations or addresses needed) of ALL contributors to the session’s content, in the order they should be listed in the program book . This list should NOT include the primary and secondary presenters above. If there are no additional contributors to list, then no names will be listed here. Please remember to list as authors only those who had a central role in the conceptualization and production of the work (i.e., those who would be authors on a formal publication of the work). This may not exceed FOUR total authors for Paper, Poster, and Mini-Skills sessions, TWO total authors for Practitioner Conversation sessions and TEN total authors for Symposia sessions.
  • The type of presentation as well as the TITLE (maximum of 10 words.) Please make sure the title you enter in this field matches the EXACT title on your description and summary and does not include your name. 
  • Your SUMMARY ( maximum 800 words and NO author identification ) should be ready to upload when prompted. This document should be in one file; do not use authors’ names as any part of the file name. Before submitting, open the document to make sure author name is not in the running head, track changes is off, and there is not a title page containing identifying information.  Your description (maximum 30 words and NO author identification) must be typed in the description box. 
  • Do not use single or double quotes (e.g., ', or ") in your information, as they may cause the page to generate an error message. 
  • You will be prompted/required to submit a minimum of three and a maximum of six (depending on the length of your session) Learner Objectives for your presentation in separate fields. Please remember that this is one of the areas that your submission will be rated on. (See page 5, dimension 3 above.)

Guidelines For Writing Learner Objectives For Continuing Professional Development Activities

You also will be prompted/ required to select a primary index term for your session. This term will appear in the printed Final Program and should be the broadest or single-most applicable term for your session. Please review the list provided carefully and select the one term that best represents your session. If none of these terms is suitable, you may supply a different term of your own.  Additionally, you may, if you like, select up to three secondary index terms for your session, which will be included, along with the primary index term, in the online program listing for better searchability.

Lastly, you will be prompted/ required to select a maximum of two Practice Domains for your session, the Skill Level to which the session material is applicable and to indicate if the session addresses Diversity issues or those of particular interest to Graduate Students and/or Early Career professionals.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion In keeping with NASP’s social justice strategic goal, a range of convention sessions are offered to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the association and school psychology practice. These sessions will cover topics including: social justice and equity; aspects of diversity such as race, language, culture, sexual orientation, and gender identity; and affirming the diverse and intersecting identities of students, families, and colleagues from minoritized backgrounds. To assist convention attendees interested in identifying and attending sessions addressing such topics, these sessions are indicated throughout the program by a [D] symbol after the session titles. Presenters of the peer-reviewed sessions self-identified sessions as fitting the EDI designation.
