Pour le Sport: Physical Culture in French and Francophone Literature

Introduction

Sport features prominently in French-speaking cultures as a socio-cultural symbol that shapes self-understanding. Literature from around the Francophone world provides a venue for exploring national cultures, and has examined sport as a vector of influence on conceptions of the mind, self and body. Pour le Sport: Physical Culture in French and Francophone Literature focuses on sport and physical culture as subjects of literature. ‘Physical culture’ includes modern sport and its precursors, providing a greater sense of shifting attitudes toward the body among broader changes in French-speaking societies. Although soccer dominates French and Francophone sports spaces, other activities resonate culturally and their literature reveals diverse values and concerns. Here, ‘literature’ encompasses written works possessing an imaginative, creative and artistic merit or value, and we read these as literature. This literary lens sets the present collection apart from other studies of sport in the French-speaking world, while opening our inquiry to physical culture in and outside of France offers a wider perspective of athletic activities and their representations in literary works.

Faire de/jouer à : talking about sports, hobbies and leisure activities in French

sport essay in french

Jouer or faire ? In French, like English, we can both  play  and  do  sports/games/hobbies, but you need to know which verb sounds correct for each activity. Here are the rules to help you get it right!

Learn when to use "faire de" and "jouer à" with sports in French

Faire du sport.

Je fais du sport tous les jours. I do sport every day.

Il  fait du  tennis. He plays tennis.

Sam fait de l' a ïkido. Sam does aïkido.

Tu fais de la natation. You swim (regularly / in a club).

Je fais du ski quand je suis dans les Alpes. I ski when I'm in the Alps.

Je skie avec ma famille. I'm skiing with my family. -> Note that in that context, the difference is not very noticeable.

Remember, English has two present tenses: I dance (simple), and I am dancing (continuous) which lets us make the distinction between something you do regularly versus something you're in the middle of doing. French has no present continuous tense, so we use faire de to distinguish the regular activity that you do,  from the one-off activity you are doing .

JOUER + À +  [SPORT]

Ils jouent au basket. They play basketball.

Je joue aux échecs. I play chess.

Il joue au tennis. He plays tennis.

Guide: How to Say “What Is Your Favorite Sport” in French

Asking someone about their favorite sport is a great way to start a conversation and get to know them better. In this guide, we will explore the different ways to ask “What is your favorite sport?” in French. We will cover both formal and informal ways of asking, and provide tips, examples, and regional variations where necessary. So, let’s get started!

Formal Ways to Ask “What Is Your Favorite Sport?”

When addressing someone formally, it is important to use appropriate language and show respect. Here are a few formal ways to ask about someone’s favorite sport in French:

1. Quel est votre sport préféré ?

This is the most straightforward and polite way to ask “What is your favorite sport?” in French. It is commonly used in formal settings, such as when speaking to someone you don’t know well or addressing someone in a professional environment.

2. Quel sport préférez-vous ?

Another formal way to ask about someone’s favorite sport is by using “préférez-vous” instead of “votre sport préféré.” This form emphasizes respect and is suitable for more formal situations.

Informal Ways to Ask “What Is Your Favorite Sport?”

In informal settings, such as when talking to friends, family, or peers, you can use these more casual and friendly ways of asking about someone’s favorite sport:

1. Quel est ton sport préféré ?

This is the informal way to ask “What is your favorite sport?” in French when addressing someone familiar, like a close friend or family member. The use of “ton” instead of “votre” creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

2. Quel sport préfères-tu ?

Similar to the previous example, this form is also used in informal situations, but it adds a more personal touch by using “préfères-tu” instead of “ton sport préféré.”

Regional Variations

French is spoken in various regions around the world, and there might be some regional variations in how people ask about someone’s favorite sport. The phrases mentioned above are widely understood and accepted, but here’s an example of a regional variation:

1. Quel est ton sport favori ?

This variation is commonly used in Canada, particularly in the French-speaking province of Quebec. It is similar to the informal version mentioned earlier but uses “sport favori” instead of “sport préféré.”

Tips and Examples:

  • When addressing someone formally, use “votre” or “préférez-vous” to show respect.
  • In casual situations, choose “ton” or “préfères-tu” for a more familiar and friendly tone.
  • Be attentive to the context and relationship with the person you are speaking to before choosing the appropriate form.

Here are some sample dialogues demonstrating how to ask “What is your favorite sport?” in different ways:

Formal: Person A: Quel est votre sport préféré ? (What is your favorite sport?) Person B: Mon sport préféré est le football. (My favorite sport is soccer.)

Informal: Person A: Quel est ton sport préféré ? (What is your favorite sport?) Person B: J’adore le tennis. (I love tennis.)

Regional Variation: Person A: Quel est ton sport favori ? (What is your favorite sport?) Person B: Mon sport favori, c’est le hockey. (My favorite sport is hockey.)

Remember, the choice of formality or informality depends on the situation and your relationship with the person you are speaking to. Feel free to adapt these examples to fit your specific needs and make them your own.

Now that you have a better understanding of how to ask “What is your favorite sport?” in French, go ahead and strike up a conversation with someone. It’s a fantastic way to bond and share common interests. So, have fun exploring the exciting world of sports in the French language!

Paris Olympics: France has a 'Plan B' for opening ceremony on the Seine if there's a security threat

France's leader said Monday that the country has alternatives prepared if security threats require changing its plans for a spectacular opening ceremony to the Paris Olympics this summer.

The July 26 showpiece is set to be the first not to take place inside a stadium, with the ambitious ceremony to instead feature 160 boats setting off along th e Se ine as huge crowds line the river's banks.

The French capital's famous waterway will host a boat for each nation competing in the games, carrying a total of 10,500 athletes on a 3½-mile route through the heart of the city. Around 120 heads of state and senior government figures from around the world will also be there, the International Olympic Committee has said.

Such a plan comes with acute security risks, particularly for a major world event taking place amid the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East .

French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that he is confident the ceremony will go ahead as planned and be a success. But, he said, should a security risk arise that threatens this meticulous operation, he has a Plan B and even a Plan C in mind.

French President Macron said instead of teams sailing down the Seine on barges, the ceremony could be "limited to the Trocadero" building across the river from the Eiffel Tower or "even moved to the Stade de France".

"We can do it and we will do it," Macron told France's RMC Radio and BFM TV on Monday morning. "If we think there are security risks, we’ll have Plan B's and even Plan C's," he added.

He said that one of those alternatives could be to hold the ceremony in the Trocadero Square facing the Eiffel Tower, where the river route culminates. The plan is already for the final elements of the event to happen here.

Another option is to move it to a more traditional sports stadium setting in the Stade de France, the national arena to the north of Paris that is due to host track and field events.

Stade De France Paris Olympics

Crowds of 300,000 are expected along the Seine to try and grab a glimpse of the ceremony, with dozens of giant screens to relay the action. Those plans were scaled back from initial ambitions for some 600,000 riverside spectators, most of them free tickets.

Authorities in Paris will use pioneering surveillance technology to monitor possible threats, with plans to deploy SWAT teams where necessary.

The security operation in Paris is so vast that other countries are helping.

Poland is among the 46 nations to add its military personnel to the French operation, which is bolstered by 18,000 French soldiers.

Earlier this month, Macron told journalists that he was sure that Russia would target the games in some way.

"I have no doubt, I have no doubt, including in informational terms. Every day, it [Russia] fuels rumors about the fact that we could not do this or that, so it would be a risk," he said at the inauguration of an Olympic swimming pool near Paris.

Beyond security, the Olympics are also contending with worries about the Seine's suitability for some swimming events. But Macron set aside concerns about pollution levels, saying Monday that he still planned to take a dip in the river before the Games begin.

His interview came a day before the Olympic flame will be lit at a ceremony in Olympia, Greece, setting off a relay before its arrival in Paris for the opening ceremony.

Will the French Olympic Team Be Best Dressed at the Opening Ceremony?

Carine Roitfeld teamed up with Berluti to sprinkle some fashion fairy dust on the designs. Here’s the verdict.

Five members of the French delegation pose in blue suits with dégradé blue, white, and red lapels, Four wear jackets with slim pants, one woman with a knee-length skirt.

By Vanessa Friedman

In the sprawling fashion show that will be the 2024 Summer Olympics — the various ceremonial fits, the performance uniforms, the podium kit, the merch — there is perhaps no more freighted look than what the French delegation will wear to the opening ceremony.

Not only is France the host country, but it has enlisted LVMH , the world’s largest luxury conglomerate, as a lead sponsor, meaning that fashion and all other forms of sumptuously chic craft have become part of the story of the event — beginning with the OC outfit. Which means it has to represent not just France, not just French athletes, but Frenchness itself, that je ne sais quoi of Gallic style. And it has to look good on approximately 1,400 members of the Olympic and Paralympic delegation as they march down the side of the Seine in the heat of the European summer.

No pressure. On Tuesday, a hundred days out from the Games, as the Olympic torch begins to make its way from Athens to Paris, the looks were finally revealed.

Tapped to fulfill the job was Berluti, a surprising choice by LVMH given that it is one of the group’s smaller houses, a men’s wear brand and doesn’t even have an official designer — and other potential candidates included Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Givenchy and Kenzo. It is exactly because of all that, however, that Berluti stands to benefit the most from the gig. Also, Antoine Arnault, the LVMH Olympics czar, said, “Berluti is the temple of bespoke and thus capable of outfitting a swimmer, a basketball player or a gymnast.” If the brand gets it right, it’s a win even without a medal.

So did they?

Designed in collaboration with Carine Roitfeld, the former editor of French Vogue, current editor of CR Fashion Book, and an all-around famous Frenchwoman, the looks are a valiant attempt to rewrite the rules of athlete outfits that somehow also call to mind Alain Delon and Catherine Deneuve playing Pan Am flight attendants on the lam at Le Palace.

“We started with the idea of a suit,” Ms. Roitfeld said on a call from Paris. “Which is a bit new for sport, because usually they go more for the jogging or the shorts.” When Ms. Roitfeld said “jogging,” she gave a small sniff, as if she had just smelled some congealed salmon mousse.

But, she went on, not just any suit. “We wanted something more classic, chic, for special moments. So I thought of Le Smoking.”

Otherwise known as a tuxedo, the smoking is a quintessentially French garment, though, because the Berluti Olympic smoking is in blue, to match the French flag, it also looks less like a tuxedo and more like a normal suit. The shawl collar lapels, with their glossy dégradé version of the French tricolor (dégradé being a fashion term for colors that seem to fade gradually into one another), also refers to a Berluti loafer treatment, in addition to nodding to the official French team uniforms , designed by Stéphane Ashpool of Pigalle (while providing a contrast to the Pigalle streetwear edge).

Ms. Roitfeld said she was surprised when she was asked to work with Berluti on the OC looks, since “usually my style is more sleek, is long, is black.” Also, she said, she had never actually been to an Olympics and generally did not “do sport.” But she liked the idea of a challenge, and she really liked the idea of celebrating French taste.

Along with Le Smoking, this idea is represented by a matching silk scarf, which can be tucked into a pocket like a hankie or tied around the neck like a foulard. The jacket also comes in a sleeveless style and with matching slim pants or a straight skirt cut to the knee. The athletes will be able to adjust the length as they wish, so, Ms. Roitfeld said, “maybe she can feel a bit the wind under the skirt.”

Worn with the jacket is a tailored white shirt — the kind, Ms. Roitfeld said, that made her think of a young man dancing at a nightclub after a black tie event, when he had taken off his tie and loosed the buttons at the neck. (This idea may be somewhat lost in the sunshine of the opening.) Accessories include a logo belt, black sneakers with a dégradé sole and slim-line leather loafers.

Of course, it is possible that, in the parade of nations, such looks will seem less reminiscent of air travel and more surprising than they do in a photo shoot framed by the ornate environs of a classic hôtel particulier in Place Vendôme. In the context of the other Olympic opening fits, which include Ralph Lauren’s designs for the United States, Lululemon’s for Canada and Armani’s for Italy, they may stand out for offering luxe, calme et volupté, the lite version.

They already have one fan, in any case. Ms. Roitfeld said she would happily wear the skirt. She added, though, that she would probably make it “a little tighter.”

ROME (AP) — The Holy See said Saturday it formally protested to France after a court there ruled that a former high-ranking Vatican official was liable for what the court determined to be the wrongful dismissal of a nun from a religious order.

The Lorient tribunal on April 3 ruled in favor of the nun, Sabine de la Valette, known at the time as Mother Marie Ferréol. The court issued a scathing denunciation of the secretive process the Vatican used to kick her out of the order, the Dominicans of the Holy Spirit, after an internal investigation.

The case is highly unusual, because it represented a secular civilian court essentially determining that the Vatican’s in-house canonical procedures grossly violated the nun’s fundamental rights.

In a statement Saturday, the Vatican said it had formally protested to the French embassy that it had received no notification of any such verdict, but that the ruling nevertheless represented a “grave violation” of the right to religious freedom.

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis had tasked Cardinal Marc Ouellet, at the time the head of the Vatican’s bishops’ office, with conducting an investigation that ended with the Holy See taking a series of canonical measures against Valette, including her 2020 expulsion after 34 years as a nun in the order.

The installation '"I piedi, insieme al cuore, portano la stanchezza e il peso della vita" ('The feet, together with the heart, carry the tiredness and weight of life') by Italian artist Maurizio Catalan is displayed on the facade of the church next to the women's prison at the Giudecca island during the 60th Biennale of Arts exhibition in Venice, Italy, Wednesday, April 17, 2024. The statement also cited potential diplomatic issues about the civil verdict against Ouellet, given his immunity as a cardinal and official of a foreign government. The Holy See is recognized internationally as a sovereign state.

The former nun’s attorney, Adeline le Gouvello de la Porte, said the court found that the Vatican’s canonical investigation had violated several of the woman’s fundamental rights, including the right to a defense. It said she was never told what she was accused of, or why she was being kicked out of the order.

Gouvello de la Porte said the court also expressed “surprise” that Ouellet hadn’t recused himself from the case. The court found Ouellet was friendly with another sister in the community “whose positions were notoriously opposed to those of Mme Baudin de la Valette,” the attorney said, citing the court verdict.

The Lorient court found the nun’s expulsion was without merit, and ordered Ouellet, the religious order and the two Vatican-mandated envoys who conducted the investigation to pay over 200,000 euros ($213,000) in material and moral damages, as well as fines.

The defendants are appealing, according to French Catholic daily La Croix said.

The Vatican frequently conducts such internal investigations into religious orders or dioceses, which can be sparked by complaints of financial mismanagement, sexual or other types of abuses, or governance problems. It considers the measures it takes to be exclusively internal to the life of the Catholic Church.

As a result, the Lorient court decision represented an unusual intrusion of secular justice in internal church matters. The sentence laid bare how canonical procedures often run afoul of contemporary secular concepts about the right to defense and a fair, adversarial judicial procedure.

And yet the French justice system seems increasingly willing to take on even high-ranking church officials in secular courts, much more so than in neighboring Italy, and especially concerning allegations related to clergy sexual misconduct and cover-up.

In 2020, for example, a French appeals court threw out a lower court ruling that had convicted Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of covering up the sexual abuse of minors in his flock.

That same year, a Paris court convicted a retired Vatican ambassador to France of sexually assaulting five men in 2018 and 2019, and handed him a suspended 8-month prison sentence. The Vatican had lifted the immunity of the ambassador, Monsignor Luigi Ventura, allowing the trial to go ahead.
