Integrative Medicine (INTM) is defined by  The American Board of Integrative Medicine®  (ABOIM®) and the  Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health  as the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the practitioner-patient relationship. INTM is whole person, evidence-based medicine that makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, health care professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.

Recognizing the need to prepare providers to adapt to this method of health care, the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) created unique opportunities for health care professionals to enhance their education with an online Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) or Graduate Certificate in INTM.

Doctor of Science in Integrative Healthcare

Huntington University of Health Science’s ( HUHS ‘s) Doctor of Science in Integrative Healthcare program is unlike virtually any other doctorate program available in the U.S. or abroad. This dynamic, professional doctorate program is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to take an integrative approach to patient care through the application of principles associated with functional medicine, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), and other integrative healthcare topics. It also prepares graduates to manage a CAM practice and to conduct CAM-oriented research. The D.Sc. program is offered exclusively online, and has no residential requirements.

Total Credits: 61 or 62 Transfer Credits Allowed: 9 Cost of Tuition per Credit: $540.00 Total Tuition of Program: $32,940.00 or $33,480.00

The D.Sc. program culminates in a capstone project. The capstone project is a substantial research project that is ultimately presented in the form of a dissertation that conforms to institutional standards.

A maximum of 9 credit hours may be transferred from previously completed graduate courses from other accredited institutions. The doctoral program is not eligible for credit by examination.

Program Outcomes:

Upon completion of the Doctor of Science in Integrative Healthcare degree program, the graduate will be able to:

• Analyze patient/client biochemistry and develop individualized healthcare programs based upon functional medicine techniques,
• Integrate complementary and alternative medicine modalities into their existing healthcare practice,
• Manage a complementary and alternative medicine practice,
• Conduct research within a complementary and alternative medicine practice,
• Synthesize relevant information from an understanding of clinical nutrition or other personalized healthcare concentration, and
• Make educated and informed decisions relevant to patient/client healthcare within the context of the CAM and functional medicine paradigm.

Academic prerequisites :

Applicants for the Doctor of Science in Integrative Healthcare must meet one of the following credentials:

• Master’s degree, or first professional degree program in a health related field from an accredited college/university with at least a 3.0 GPA or
• A minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited college/university with at least a 3.0 GPA and significant professional experience in a health related field.

Applicants for the Doctor of Science in Integrative Healthcare must have these prerequisite courses.

Note: If a student is accepted into the Doctor of Science in Integrative Healthcare and is missing any of the above prerequisite courses, they will need to take those courses prior to starting the doctorate program. The courses may be taken at HUHS or another accredited school.

American Clinical Board of Nutrition (ACBN)

The American Clinical Board of Nutrition (ACBN) is a certifying agency in nutrition accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), which certifies programs based on the highest quality standards in professional certification to ensure the programs adhere to modern standards of practice in the certification industry.

The ACBN is one of only a very few certifying agencies in nutrition to offer Diplomate status to all professionals in the health care field beyond the doctorate level in the United States and Internationally. Certificants of the ACBN hold the distinction of Diplomate, American Clinical Board of Nutrition (DACBN) Candidates for the DACBN examination are required to provide proof of completion of a 300-hour clinical nutrition course from an accredited institution.

The Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine doctoral program provides diverse research and learning experiences that emphasize cellular and molecular processes underscoring coordinated integration of organ systems within the body, typically with a view to unraveling disease mechanisms. The interdisciplinary environment of the Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine doctoral program, involving both basic and clinical scientists, facilitates the acquisition of modern experimental techniques and development of the intellectual tools required for their effective implementation in the study of current problems in health and disease. Students in the program typically pursue research projects that combine sophisticated approaches to study cellular & molecular mechanisms along with powerful integrative physiological techniques to better understand normal function and pathophysiology.

Students enrolled in the Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine doctoral program at UNMC will have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of the best health and disease-focused scientists and educators in the world. The program is hosted by the Department of Cellular & Integrative Physiology in the College of Medicine. Faculty in the department are world-renowned physiologists who uphold the mission of the department to excel in research, teaching, service, and mentoring. In addition, more than 50 additional faculty in various departments, divisions, and colleges across campus are members of the Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine program. The diversity of these faculties’ research programs is tremendous, and allows for students to identify a mentor, laboratory and research project that are ideal for their own individual doctoral training.

• Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine students learn how design and execute molecular, cellular, and whole-body integrative physiology experiments to test their novel hypotheses.
• Students are encouraged to participate in a writing group with their peers and faculty that focuses on writing competitive grants and predoctoral fellowships.
• Faculty mentors encourage and support their students’ travel to regional, national, and international scientific conferences to present their research.
• An Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine student’s training is designed to be individualized to ensure the student’s short-term and long-term career goals can be achieved. For example, students select their own elective course from a list of 20+ courses ranging from topics like cardiopulmonary function to stem cell biology to proteomics and many more.

The Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine doctoral program prepares students for a career in: biomedical research (in academia and industry); education; scientific writing; and/or, science policy. Recent graduates of the program transitioned to the following positions:

Nearly 40% of Americans use complementary and alternative treatments, including dietary supplements and services such as chiropractic and massage. Medical insurance policies increasingly cover these services.

Few accredited terminal degrees in integrative health are available in the United States. Graduates of the ACHS DSc will fill an essential gap in skilled integrative health professionals. In addition, healthcare occupations will grow 16% from 2020-2030.

Graduates of the Doctor of Science in Integrative Health program will have the skills and training to educate others, apply their knowledge in professional and clinical settings based on their area(s) of specialization, and contribute to community and global health initiatives.

Nutrition State Law Disclosures Many states have enacted laws that regulate the practice of dietetics and nutrition services. For example, some states restrict using the title “Nutritionist” or “Nutrition Counselor,” while others do not. Please note that ACHS programs do not train graduates to become a “Registered Dietitian.”

ACHS provides nutrition practice information by state at https://achs.edu/nutrition-state-law-disclosures/ and partners with the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP) to continually educate students and graduates about professional opportunities in the holistic nutrition field. ACHS also provides new students in this program with a student membership to the NANP for one year. 1

• Use theory and research evidence to identify, design, and assess behavioral and action-focused functional nutrition and integrative health education protocols;
• Create activities and coalitions with global, national, state, or community organizations to promote health policies and environments that support food and health sovereignty;
• Synthesize and review evidence-based research and literature to apply best practices in integrative health;
• Evaluate the impact of ethical, socioeconomic, and racial influences on health outcomes;
• Implement integrative health professional scope of practice and code of ethics based on specialization;
• Design, conduct, and publish original research in integrative health and functional nutrition as demonstrated by the Doctoral Dissertation Project.

Integrative medicine (IM) is an emerging field that emphasizes the evidence-based combination of both conventional and alternative approaches to address the biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of health and illness.

What are the benefits of Integrative Medicine?

Integrative Medicine practitioners usually take a holistic/total person approach to their patients.  They understand that overall health and well-being is a combination of multiple factors, including genetics, physiology, the environment, personal relationships, health beliefs, and the power of a positive medical interaction.    In some situations, Integrative Medicine modalities may achieve similar results to conventional medicine with fewer side effects, and may create a greater sense of individual self-efficacy.

This doctoral specialization cultivates an integrative approach to professional development in the art and science of therapeutic practice. Education Assistance The Education Assistance Scholarship is sponsored by Pacifica Graduate Institute and offered to new and returning students based on extreme financial hardship and strong academic excellence. Awards are made annually at the beginning of each academic year. The award is $1,000 to be equally divided over the academic year. This scholarship is not renewable, and students must apply each academic year. Students enrolled in the PhD and PsyD Dissertation phase of their programs are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

Yellow Ribbon Matching Scholarship Pacifica Graduate Institute is pleased to announce that we have entered into an agreement with the Veteran’s Administration in support of veterans continuing their education under the Post 9/11 GI Bill . Pacifica has agreed to provide up to ten Yellow Ribbon Scholarships each year for qualifying veterans under the Post 9/11 GI Bill on a first-come first-serve basis. Students in the M.A. Counseling program will qualify for up to $6,500 per year, M.A. Engaged Humanities and Creative Life will qualify for up to $5,400 per year, and those in the doctoral programs will qualify for up to $7,800 per year.

Average awards range from $2,000-$3,000. The number and amount of individual awards is contingent upon the number of eligible applications received. The faculty of Pacifica’s doctoral program in Depth Psychology with specialization in Integrative Therapy and Healing Practices are leaders in the field: authors of international acclaim, renowned lecturers, Jungian analysts, clinical psychologists, registered nurses, and philosophers. Curriculum Overview

Students matriculating in the Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with Specialization in Integrative Therapy and Healing Practice in fall 2024 will come to campus for 3 weekend residential sessions each quarter (fall winter, spring) for their first year of coursework. In their second and third years, residential sessions will take place once each quarter for five days from Monday through Friday. The web-enhanced learning components occur throughout the program. There will be no summer quarters.

Requirements for Graduation

• Students must complete a total of 74 quarter units to fulfill the degree requirement for graduation.
• A minimum grade of “C” is required in each completed course.
• A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained.
• Students must comply with attendance requirements as stated in the Student Handbook.
• Students must successfully pass a comprehensive written examination at the end of the second year of coursework.
• Students must successfully present a Control Paper describing their therapeutic or depth-oriented practice work with a particular client, family, or select group to two faculty members during the third year of practice consultation courses.
• Students must successfully complete a comprehensive oral presentation at the end of two and a half years of coursework.
• Students must write, submit, and defend an original dissertation accepted by the faculty.
• Students are required to take part in 50 hours of depth-oriented therapy, counseling, analysis, or an engaged self-reflective process with a provider in their field while enrolled. This is required for graduation and strongly recommended to support students in their educational experience in the program.

Notice Regarding

The Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with specialization in Integrative Therapy and Healing Practices is designed specifically for those who, before enrolling, already are licensed or have sufficient academic and other credentials to pursue their chosen professional practice in compliance with applicable guidelines and regulations within their jurisdiction. The degree provides in-depth education in theory, applied contexts, and related-research contexts. Unlike the counseling and clinical doctoral programs at Pacifica Graduate Institute which have developed curricula and clinical training support for those wishing to sit for licensure exams to become psychologists, this specialized depth psychology program does not arrange, authorize, monitor, or supervise practice for licensure purposes.

The comprehensive examination consists of a written portion taken at the end of the second year and an oral portion taken at the end of the third year. The written exam is divided into three sections corresponding to the three study tracks of the specialization: Theory and Traditions of Depth Therapy; Psychology; Therapy, Counseling, and Healing Practices Informed by the Humanities, Arts, and

Sciences; and Integrated Praxis: Research and Applied Contexts. It is designed to assess knowledge gained in the first two years of coursework and serves as a qualifying exam for students before continuing into the third year of study. Students in the Integrative Therapy & Healing Practices specialization who have successfully completed at least 29 units of Ph.D. coursework and who are in good standing are eligible to complete the written comprehensive examination. The third year oral examination consists of the student’s formal oral presentation addressing the ways the program hasinformed their work and their proposed dissertation topic.

Control Paper

During the third year applied presentation series, each student presents a control paper that demonstrates their applied work and the ability to synthesize a variety of appropriate therapeutic and/or healing arts perspectives while maintaining their own unique style of practice.

Doctoral Dissertation

The dissertation process involves the completion of all coursework in research methodologies, dissertation development, and dissertation writing. Requirements and procedures for enrolling in dissertation writing are detailed in the Dissertation Handbook. The Dissertation Committee is composed of a Chair, a Reader, and an External Reader. Each committee member must possess an earned doctorate based in part on a dissertation unless the Research Coordinator for the specialization waives this requirement.

AIMC Berkeley’s Professional Doctoral Completion Program for Acupuncturists offers a rigorous, advanced education in East Asian & Integrative Medicine. Students receive specialized training on the utilization of traditional, classical, and contemporary medicine in our Doctoral Level courses.

HERBOLOGY – DOCTORAL LEVEL / COMPLETION TRACK

Advanced Integrative Herbs: EAH 410 2.0 units – 30 lecture hours This course explores classical references for classic herbal formulas and ties them to Japanese-style abdominal & pulse diagnosis. Proper diagnosis is critical for positive patient outcomes and is paramount to our success as practitioners. Students will learn to determine the primary deficiency in any given case by abdominal and pulse diagnosis, modify formulas by progression of disease given the patient’s constitution, and use effective counseling techniques to increase patient compliance, safety, and efficacy of herbal prescribing.

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE – DOCTORAL LEVEL/ COMPLETION TRACK

Diagnostic Studies in Clinical Practice: IM 470 1.0 unit – 15 lecture hours This course provides a comprehensive overview and application of the role of labs in the practice of integrative medicine. Students will understand the use of lab tests and imaging in clinical practice, be able to interpret lab findings and identify needed tests, read imaging reports and work as part of an integrative care team. Students will be able to identify allopathic, functional and naturopathic perspectives on the interpretation of lab findings, as well as describe a number of options for patients to obtain lab testing.

Nutritional Strategies in Integrative Medicine: IM 410 1.0 unit – 15 lecture hours Functional medicine is a perspective that integrates the most useful tools and techniques of Bio medicine with the systems based approaches of traditional medicine to improve the diagnosis and treatment of modern and functional disorders, including impaired detoxification, autoimmune disorders, food allergies, immune dysfunction, chronic viral infection, endocrine imbalances and more. This class provides an overview of the systems‐based approach with a focus on whole foods‐based nutritional therapy.

Integrative Medicine Practice: IM 510 1.0 unit – 15 lecture hours– pre: IM 410 This class concentrates on the advanced application of research, herbal medicine, nutrition counseling and diet and lifestyle advice along with acupuncture to treat complex internal disorders in the context of collaborative care. The integrative treatment of infertility, mental disorders and addiction, autoimmune disorders, endocrine disorders and pediatric disorders will be discussed. Advanced Orthopedics and Pain Management: IM 571 2.5 units – 37.5 lecture hours This class develops the application of acupuncture for orthopedic problems and pain with the application of integrative and advanced needling techniques including trigger point acupuncture, Dr. Tan’s and Master Tung’s needling systems, dry needling, auricular therapy, scalp acupuncture, electro stimulation and more. The student will be able to incorporate the tools and techniques of allopathic neurologic and orthopedic testing to enhance patient diagnosis, treatment and case management, as well as prescribe appropriate therapeutic exercises for rehabilitation and pain management. PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE – DOCTORAL LEVEL / COMPLETION TRACK

Integrative Practice Building: PE 521 1.5 units – 22.5 lecture hours This course exposes students to the broad scope of career and practice options in integrative medicine, and prepares them to successfully manage patient care in a variety of settings. Students will identify areas of professional weakness and explore ways to re-mediate them, as well as develop plans for lifelong learning. The course explores the challenges and opportunities the integrative practitioner faces in delivering and coordinating healthcare within various systems, providing collaborative care and communicating effectively with other health care practitioners. Students will practice an array of skills important to patient education, community outreach, career development and collaborative care, such as public speaking, case presentations, report writing, creating and maintaining a referral network and inter-professional communication.

RESEARCH – DOCTORAL LEVEL / COMPLETION TRACK

Doctoral Research Project: IM 450 1.5 unit – 22.5 lecture hours This course initiates the doctoral research project, in which students make a substantial contribution to clinical research and/ or scholarship in integrative medicine. The student will be able to describe a range of options for the doctoral project, including case study review, meta‐analysis, clinical research study, literature review and more. Students will identify and assemble a doctoral advisory committee, submit and revise their thesis project proposal and commence their research.

Doctoral Research Project Presentation: IM 550 1.0 unit – 15 lecture hours – pre: IM 450 Students make an original contribution to scholarship and research in the field of integrative medicine. Students carry out the doctoral project initiated in IM 550 and prepare, present and defend it to the members of their doctoral committee. They document their research in a final paper suitable for publication.

ADVANCED CLINICAL SKILLS – DOCTORAL LEVEL / COMPLETION TRACK

Internship IV: CP 411 2.23 units ‐ 67 clinic hours This course series builds on the skills attained in the previous levels of clinical internship, incorporating the additional doctoral level competencies which enable the integrative practitioner to utilize the full scope of practice of the licensed acupuncturist, including ordering and interpreting lab work and diagnostic imaging, giving effective nutrition advice and exercise counseling, collaborating with various types of practitioners in patient care and incorporating scholarship, research, evidence‐based and functional medicine into practice.

Leigh A. Frame, PhD, MHS

Dr. Leigh Frame brings nutrition and immunity together through clinical, translational research. Her T-shaped expertise in health, wellness, science, and medicine was developed through her wide-ranging experience in biomedical research (from wet bench to clinical research) and overseeing research and education programs. While working at the Johns Hopkins Center for Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Frame earned her PhD in Human Nutrition from the Hopkins School of Public Health and received a Master of Health Science in Immunology from the same school. 36 TOTAL CREDITS REQUIRED

In as few as 30 months, 100% online graduate from a program accredited by the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM), part of the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS). Plus, consider an optional concentration in Nutrition to sit for the Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) exam from the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS), part of the American Nutrition Association (ANA).

Students will take the Track Electives from their selected track (Standard or Nutrition). Students who wish to take additional elective courses outside of their selected track may do so with approval from the Program Director.

Credit Hour Policy: Three Credit Courses Over the 8-week course, you should expect to spend an average of 6 hours per week of direct or guided instruction (e.g., peer-reviewing classmates writing assignments, engaging in team-based assignments, discussion boards) and 12 hours per week in independent learning (e.g., independent research, reading), for a total average of 18 hours per week of direct and independent learning. The time may vary for each student based on professional background, academic experience, and learning style.

Risk factors for malnutrition in macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates), micronutrients (fat versus water soluble vitamins), and those due to environmental exposures including medications. Nutrition, nutrition research, and their application to health care.

Expands on foundational nutrition knowledge through evaluating and assessing nutrient requirements across the lifespan. Students develop a personalized, culturally appropriate integrative nutrition plan. Permission of the instructor may be substituted for the prerequisite course.

The application of the concepts of model-valid and paradigm-specific research designs and methodologies, and how and why these strategies could be groundbreaking for the holistic medical sciences.

Developing a patient-centric integrative medicine approach to care. Historical, sociocultural, and legal aspects of the evolution of medicine in the United States. Focus on clinical domains of therapeutic relationships and motivational interviewing, lifestyle medicine, personalized medicine, and traditional medical systems.

Health care provider wellness; strategies to address the biological and psychological domains of personal and clinical care.

Evaluation of the interconnectedness of the endocrine and cardiometabolic systems in health and disease, and the influence of environmental factors and nutrition on these body systems.

Diseases of the gastrointestinal, immune, and nervous systems and interconnectedness of these systems in the context of chronic disease states. Symptomatic, functional, and disease markers and the development of integrative treatment plans.

Prerequisite: INTM 6203 Nutritional Metabolism and Environmental Exposure

Evaluation of the legal, ethical, business, and leadership considerations in decision making related to patient-centered care. Development of strategies associated with successful integrative medicine practice.

Prerequisite:  INTM 6201 Foundations in Integrative Medicine

Integration of knowledge and practice of the integrative medicine curriculum into practical clinical skills in preparation for addressing core lifestyle topics with patients/clients. Restricted to students in integrative medicine programs.

Prerequisite: INTM 6204 Metabolic Networks in Integrative Medicine

Application of clinical knowledge and continued development of clinical reasoning through literature review, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and peer review. Students develop a research protocol on a domain of integrative health care practice. Restricted to students in integrative medicine programs.

Application of clinical genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics to clinical practice; isolating patterns of meaning within complex signals; developing clinical solutions; interpreting the omics literature; and engaging in omics-based research.

Incorporation of health promotion with disease prevention and advocating for healthy lifestyles and preventive medicine practices. Evidence-based clinical reasoning for the evaluation and management of problems common to outpatient care. Restricted to students in integrative medicine programs.

Nutrition Track Electives

Nutrition science and metabolism through exploration of nutrient-oriented biochemical pathways.

The relationships among food, technology, and health. Food processing, health benefits of food, and novel food products and technology.

Contemporary and emerging areas of interest in nutrition as they relate to research, policy, dietary guidelines, and clinical intervention. Topics vary by semester. May be repeated for credit provided the topic differs. Consult the Schedule of Classes for more details.

    Integrative Medicine and Whole Person Health Scholarship Fund

The fund provides partial merit-based scholarships that are awarded to eligible fall incoming students in the Integrative Medicine & Health Sciences program. The fund is offered by the Division of Integrative Medicine and Whole Person Health. Integrative Medicine and Whole Person Health are strongly rooted in the principles of Cura Personalis (care for the whole person) and the use of globally diverse medical systems for the development of mind, body, and health as a whole.

Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) offers  scholarships  to incoming master’s students based on merit and service. Philadelphia, PA —The Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and the Department of Integrative Medicine & Nutritional Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University, located in Philadelphia, PA, has opened registration for a highly anticipated CME event: the 5th annual Advances in Mind-Body Medicine conference scheduled for May 16-17, 2024. The two-day event will be held on Jefferson's Center City Philadelphia campus for in-person attendees, with live virtual attendance options also available.

“Our conference is a platform for advancing and transforming healthcare,” says Dr. Daniel Monti, founder of the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and Chair of the Department of Integrative Medicine. “When healthcare providers understand and apply the principles of mind-body medicine, we can revolutionize patient care and wellness.”

Advances in Mind-Body Medicine is led by Integrative Medicine experts and curated to help bridge gaps between traditional and integrative medicine practices for a comprehensive approach to patient-centered care. This year’s conference spotlights the latest in integrative health and features topics such as: The Gut-Brain Connection, Trauma and Stress in Mind-Body Medicine, Mindfulness-Based Interventions, Meditation & Spirituality’s Impact on the Brain, Advanced Mind-Body Strategies for Special Populations, and many more.

Participants will experience two days of immersive sessions and have the opportunity to explore innovative treatments and therapies that address the complexities of human health.

Licensed healthcare practitioners including physicians, psychologists, nurses, and other providers attending the conference can expect to enrich their practice with new insights and strategies that address both illness and wellness to reshape the future of healthcare for their patients. CME credits are available for healthcare providers and full-time students in healthcare disciplines.

Nutritional Neuroscience GW Integrative Medicine

Today on the pod we are going to talk about the science behind nutritional neuroscience with Stephen Fleming, PhD. This scientific discipline studies the effects various components of the diet such as minerals, vitamins, protein, carbohydrates, fats, dietary supplements, synthetic hormones, and food additives have on neurochemistry, neurobiology, behavior, and cognition, according to the journal Nutritional Neuroscience. An expert on nutrition and cognitive development, Dr. Fleming is also the co-founder and CEO of Traverse Science, Inc., a company that helps researchers at global nutrition organizations take a visual and evidence-based approach to scientific substantiation. He found his roots first in psychology (B.S) and later as a neuroscientist (PhD) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.
