Wondering which topic to pick up for your next essay? Essay writing is nowadays an essential task given to students of all grades. No matter how daunting it may appear to you essay writing allows students to build up a disciplined, logical and rational communication approach towards a topic. Before picking up an ideal essay topic, it is important for you to understand the characteristics of the essay.

What are Essays?

An essay is a formal piece of writing that may describe, analyze, argue, or present a writer’s opinion on a particular topic. An essay has three parts –

Introduction – It presents the essay topic to the readers. The last sentence of the essay is generally the thesis statement that states the writer’s perspective about the topic.

Body Paragraph(s) – There are generally one or more body paragraphs written in an essay which explain the topic introduced earlier in the introductory paragraph. The writer can provide examples, facts, and evidence to prove their points.

Conclusion – It presents a short summarized version of the essay and concludes what the writer expressed in the essay. A conclusion includes something for the readers that they may take up from the essay.

Types of Essays

An essay can be categorized differently based on its purpose, whether a writer wants to present their opinion, an argument, an explanation or convince the readers. No matter what type of essay you write you must be aware of the topic and to gain that knowledge you must research well. English essays for students are generally of four types –

Narrative Essays – These types of essays follow the concept of storytelling. As the name suggests, the writer narrates their experience in a narrative essay. There can be a number of fun essay topics in this category where you can explain bizarre incidents happened with you.

Descriptive Essays – These types of essays are explanatory in nature. They describe a place, object or any other concept. It is just like painting a picture – including the details and giving complete information about the topic to the readers.

Persuasive Essays – If you are a beginner in essay writing choose a simple essay topic for kids and follow the above-stated format for writing the essay. These types of essays are written to convince the readers about a particular idea or opinion of the writer. The writer needs to present a logical approach and support their arguments with facts and evidence.

Expository Essays – These essays provide a rational analysis of a topic. These essays can be argumentative, comparison-based or problem-solution based. The writer needs to include facts and evidence to support their arguments here. They do not involve the personal opinions of the writer but theories and facts.

Hi friends! A while back, after I did a post of story ideas for kids , I got requests for essay topics for kids. I thought it was a little out of my wheelhouse, though, since I’ve never taught children. But then I thought, wait a minute…I’m married to someone who used to teach middle school English! So I invited Mr. Donovan to guest post today. Take it away, honey…

For these, I tried to think about 5th and 6th grade writing topics, but the truth is, most of these writing prompts would also work for kids much younger, and some of them would work for older kids. If you’re a busy teacher or homeschooling parent, I hope you find good ideas you can use.

While this list focuses especially on persuasive writing, it offers a wide range of subjects. I think many students will feel strongly about them since they know about them firsthand, and they may have fun writing about them. Some prompts may encourage students to try to persuade through the use of humor and personal stories, while others may lead them to compare and contrast two things or use logic and/or ethical arguments to support their points of view. Hopefully, their strong feelings will lead student writers to experience persuasive writing as an essential tool for their success.[spacer height=”20px”]

Method: Argumentative essays rely heavily on well-researched facts and logical assertions. In a persuasive essay, the writer may use a blend of emotion and facts to win over the reader.
Audience: Persuasive essays require a specific audience, since the writer must acknowledge and attempt to overcome their potential objections. The writer of an argumentative essay is simply making a statement, so knowing their audience is less important.
Viewpoint: A persuasive essay writer should believe their point of view is the only correct one, and try to persuade the reader to agree. Argumentative essays acknowledge other points of view, but use reason and logic to argue that the writer’s point of view is best.

What's the best way to use these creative writing prompts for kids? It depends on a lot of factors, including the student's age, current schooling structure, and their own interests and abilities. Here are some suggestions:

Use as a daily writing prompts exercise. You can assign one of these prompts at the beginning or end of the school day, as a way to prepare for the rest of the day or unwind after schoolwork.

Set up a quiet space to write. Many people have a hard enough time writing even with no distractions, and it can be nearly impossible to respond thoughtfully to a prompt if there's a television on, people talking, etc. Having a distraction-free space can help your student focus on the work at hand and produce their best writing.

There is a short optional extension activity in which students describe a day out in London, using words from A to Z.

Students work with the theme of cause and effect in an IELTS Reading task about children’s TV viewing. They discuss some speaking exam style questions related to the topic of television and media and then define relevant vocabulary. They also read an article and respond to matching sentence endings, matching features and true/false/not given questions, before examining useful phrases and vocabulary from the text. Exam tips are provided. There is an optional bonus reading extension activity which provides additional information on the same topic. This lesson is part of one unit in the IELTS preparation course plan which provides practice in listening/speaking, reading and writing for the IELTS exam. The full lesson plan takes a minimum of 60 minutes.

Pre-intermediate (A2-B1)

This lesson looks at both San Diego Zoo and Taipei Zoo and the way they take care of their pandas. Exercises focus on authentic listening, through a video news report, and reading skills. Related vocabulary will be looked at and students will be given the opportunity to discuss several issues that are related to the topic.

The topic of this lesson is fundraising and how different organisations and individuals raise money for charity. Students read an article about how four different charities raise money and listen to a radio programme live from a charity fun run where the presenter is taking part and interviewing some of the competitors at the same time. Students learn level-appropriate vocabulary connected to raising money and good causes. They will also choose a good cause they would like to raise money for and try to collect sponsors for a charity fun run in the roleplay. In addition to this, students are asked to do some research on a fundraising website and select a charity they would like to donate to.

Positive Parenting Tips: Young Teens (12–14 years old)

As a parent you give your children a good start in life—you nurture, protect, and guide them.
Learn about developmental milestones, including emotional and social changes for children who are 12 to 14 years old.

Developmental milestones

This is a time of many physical, mental, emotional, and social changes. Hormones change as puberty begins. Most boys grow facial and pubic hair and their voices deepen. Most girls grow pubic hair and breasts, and start their period. They might be worried about these changes and how they are looked at by others. This also will be a time when your teen might face peer pressure to use alcohol, tobacco products, and drugs, and to have sex. Other challenges can be eating disorders, depression, and family problems. At this age, teens make more of their own choices about friends, sports, studying, and school. They become more independent, with their own personality and interests, although parents are still very important.

Here is some information on how young teens develop.

Show more concern about body image, looks, and clothes.
Focus on themselves; going back and forth between high expectations and lack of confidence.
Experience more moodiness.
Show more interest in and influence by peer group.
Express less affection toward parents; sometimes might seem rude or short-tempered.

Develop eating problems.
Feel a lot of sadness or depression, which can lead to poor grades at school, alcohol or drug use, unsafe sex, and other problems.

Following are some things you, as a parent, can do to help your child during this time:

Be honest and direct with your teen when talking about sensitive subjects such as drugs, drinking, smoking, and sex.
Meet and get to know your teen's friends.
Show an interest in your teen's school life.
Help your teen make healthy choices while encouraging them to make their own decisions.
Respect your teen's opinions and take into account their thoughts and feelings. It is important that they know you are listening to them.
When there is a conflict, be clear about goals and expectations (like getting good grades, keeping things clean, and showing respect), but allow your teen input on how to reach those goals (like when and how to study or clean).

Child safety first

You play an important role in keeping your child safe―no matter how old they are. Here are a few tips to help protect your child:

Make sure your teen knows about the importance of wearing seatbelts. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among 12- to 14-year-olds.
Encourage your teen to wear a helmet when riding a bike or a skateboard or using inline skates; riding on a motorcycle, snowmobile, or all-terrain vehicle; or playing contact sports. Injuries from sports and other activities are common.
Talk with your teen about the dangers of drugs, drinking, smoking, and risky sexual activity. Ask them what they know and think about these issues, and share your thoughts and feelings with them. Listen to what they say and answer their questions honestly and directly.
Talk with your teen about the importance of having friends who are interested in positive activities. Encourage them to avoid peers who pressure them to make unhealthy choices.
Know where your teen is and whether an adult is present. Make plans with them for when they will call you, where you can find them, and what time you expect them home.
Set clear rules for your teen when they are home alone. Talk about such issues as having friends at the house, handling situations that can be dangerous (emergencies, fire, drugs, sex, etc.), and completing homework or household tasks.

Healthy bodies

Encourage your teen to be physically active. They might join a team sport or take up an individual sport. Helping with household tasks such as mowing the lawn, walking the dog, or washing the car also will keep your teen active.
Meal time is very important for families. Eating together helps teens make better choices about the foods they eat, promotes healthy weight, and gives your family members time to talk with each other.
Keep television sets out of your teen's bedroom. Set limits for screen time, including cell phones, computers, video games, and other devices, and develop a family media plan.
Make sure your child gets the recommended amount of sleep each night: For teenagers 13–18 years of age, 8–10 hours per 24 hours (including naps).

Boy, 12, blames friend for machete killing of 19-year-old man in Wolverhampton

Both defendants have denied murdering Shawn Seesahai on 13 November year - blaming each other for stabbing the 19-year-old.

One of two 12-year-olds accused of a machete murder has told a jury he saw his co-defendant kill the victim during an attack lasting up to five minutes.

The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said he was "nowhere near" as 19-year-old Shawn Seesahai was stabbed by his friend, whose identity is also protected.

The boys are alleged to have murdered Mr Seesahai, who was stabbed through the heart and suffered a skull fracture.

The alleged joint attack took place on Wolverhampton 's Stowlawn playing fields on 13 November year.

The pair both deny murder and blame each other for stabbing Mr Seesahai.

Giving evidence on Monday at Nottingham Crown Court, the youth, who is the second of the defendants, denied causing Mr Seesahai any injury.

He said his friend had told Mr Seesahai and a friend of the deceased to "keep it stepping" before putting a machete in its sheath down behind a bench and adding: "Get ready".

Claiming to have been surprised that his friend had the machete, the second defendant added: "Shawn towered over him.

"He just kept saying: 'Move off the bench'."

A teenage girl known to both defendants then picked up the machete, the boy said, and she passed it to the other youth.

Answering questions from Paul Lewis KC, defending, the boy said his friend was put in a headlock and had asked for help while trying to make sure Mr Seesahai could not grab the knife.

He told the court: "I pushed Shawn off [the first defendant]. He [Shawn] grabbed on to me. We both fell to the floor.

"I fell on the concrete. Shawn fell on the grass."

According to the boy's account, the first defendant - who admits owning the machete - then ran after Mr Seesahai, who tripped when his shoe came off as he tried to flee.

Denying that he kicked, punched or stamped on the victim, the second defendant said he had seen his friend stab Mr Seesahai more than once.

"I was nowhere near him... I told him to leave it," he said of the first defendant.

His friend had attacked Mr Seesahai for about five minutes and then had blood "all over his hands" and on the cuff of his fleece, the boy said.

The second defendant said he did not know how a "very small" spot of blood had got onto his right trainer.

Mr Lewis asked the boy: "Did you have the knife in your hand at any time when you were in the park?"

The youth answered: "No."

Before his arrest the next day, the boy said, the co-defendant had told him they should blame the teenage girl - who was going to see the police - for what had happened.

The trial continues.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A 35-year-old man is awaiting to be extradited back to Houston after he was arrested in Arizona nearly a month following his sister's shooting death.

Richard Taplin is charged with murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful carry of a weapon with a felony conviction tied to the April 27 shooting death of his 24-year-old sister, Sarah.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. at 8100 MLK Boulevard.

The Houston Police Department said there was an argument between Sarah Taplin and an "unidentified woman," though it wasn't clear if they knew each other.

At one point during the fight, Richard Taplin allegedly took a firearm from someone, pointed it at the unidentified woman, and fired at her as she fled. Police said Richard Taplin also shot into a crowded gas station parking lot across the street.

During the shooting, Sarah Taplin was hit at least once.

Richard spent nearly a month on the run, but on Wednesday, HPD announced he was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 20. He's currently waiting to be extradited.

For many Americans, the cicadas are here .

Trillions of periodical cicadas are already emerging in a rare, two brood event across multiple states , with more expected to come in the following weeks. Thanks to warm temperatures and good conditions, these 13- or 17-year cicadas are emerging from their underground habitats to eat, mate and die, making a whole lot of noise in the process.

Broods XIX and XIII have not emerged together since 1803, and after this year, won't emerge together again until 2245. While they are largely in different states, they are both emerging in parts of Illinois and Iowa.

So if you've seen one cicada or hundreds of cicadas, here's where you can expect to see more this year.

Are cicadas already out in 2024?

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX have been spotted by users in multiple states across the Southeast and Midwest including in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Illinois, according to Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Through Cicada Safari, users can confirm their sightings of cicadas with pictures, look at a map of other cicada sightings, join a leaderboard with other users and learn more information about cicadas.

The two cicada broods are projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.

The two broods last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a brood?

According to the University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.

Unluckily for us, the 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.
