The Yukon Assignment review - two men in a boat test father-son bond | reviews, news & interviews

The yukon assignment review - two men in a boat test father-son bond, british documentary adventure explores canadian wilderness.

the yukon assignment soundtrack

The Yukon Assignment tracks a 500-mile canoe journey along a remote river in Canada taken by a British adventurer and his father. The feature-length documentary is a gentle, unpretentious love-letter to untamed nature and its ability to bring two people together. For Chris Lucas, director and expedition leader, it is a chance to connect on a deeper level with his father Niall, a former actor and less adept adventurer. Chris tells us that his goal is to overcome both the “risk of bears” and the “risk of our relationship”.

The Yukon Assignment

There are too many moments that leave one grasping for a more considered narrative. But Chris’s central message is about the more intimate drama of one-to-one connection, and how some time away in the middle of nowhere can foster it. Late in the film, he recommends such voyages for “everyone”. It’s obvious that a 500-mile unsupported canoe ride into the Arctic Circle might not be everyone’s answer to that call. But the combination of Chris and Niall’s slightly bumbling incompetence and their down-to-earth likeability does make even the most extreme of voyages seem possible.

A new adventure film produced by a Falmouth University lecturer has been picked up by Netflix.

Produced and devised in Cornwall, the Yukon Assignment is a breath-taking exploration of one of the earth’s last wildernesses and the story of how adventure can sometimes bring us together, irrespective of age.

The film stars Cornwall -based adventurer and outdoor leader Chris Lucas and his father Niall Lucas who took on 500 miles of Canadian wilderness in an unsupported canoe adventure.

The film was produced by Falmouth University lecturer Charlie Fripp and not only has it already been promoted by Canada’s Visit Yukon tourist office but it’s been picked up by Netflix.

Chris said: “We are thrilled that The Yukon Assignment will be on Netflix this festive season. Our goal with the film was to encourage people to dream big and dare to believe.”

Charlie added: “We’re so pleased the film has been picked up by Netflix after its successful cinema tour and Amazon Prime release.

"We’re really grateful for all the support we’ve had from so many people at Falmouth University and it has been brilliant to use the many lessons learnt from making the film in our first-year documentary module, Origin at Falmouth’s School of Film and Television and it has been inspiring to see our students create their own stories, many of which screened at Cornwall film festival this year.

"We’d love it if after watching the film, people reach out to a loved one or plan their own adventure, whether that’s a walk in the park or something bigger.”

The Yukon Assignment’s film making team are now collaborating on their next project, which take viewers on a new adventure, while Falmouth’s Mark Jenkin is due to release his new feature film in 2022.

Affable enjoyment … The Yukon Assignment.

The Yukon Assignment review – canoe adventure doc stays in the shallows

A British father and son embark on a five-week expedition through Canada in a modest, pleasant documentary

A father-and-son team canoe 500 miles across the frozen Canadian wilderness in this modest, slightly frustrating documentary filmed by the son, Chris Lucas. He’s a professional adventurer. His dad, Niall, was an actor in his youth and is a natural in front of the camera. He’s also the perfect travelling companion, pretending to be a crabby old git while really being affable, unruffled and perpetually in awe of the surroundings. The two are so thoroughly pleasant and politely English that their trip might have been sponsored by John Lewis. After nearly becoming dinner for a frisky adolescent bear, one of them says mildly: “Phew, that was quite exciting wasn’t it.”

The intimidatingly capable Chris planned the five-week trip down the Yukon river as a bonding exercise on which to get to know his dad a bit better. The thing about his family, he explains, is that everyone’s a bit stiff-upper-lipped. I have to admit, I don’t think this trip loosened them up. Chris is about to become a dad and there’s a conversation or two about fatherhood, but nothing too deep. The men’s relationship doesn’t seem troubled by competitiveness, though a psychologist might take an interest in Chris’s motives for making his dad Niall entirely dependent on him for five weeks.

Some of the limitations of the film can be blamed on the budget: as the canoe’s skipper and cameraman, it’s impossible for Chris to film some of the hairier moments. Perhaps what the film needed was someone else to prod and poke and get them properly talking. Still, there are valuable tips here on what to do if you ever find yourself in bear territory. Number one: pee around your tent. Bears don’t like the smell.

The Open Ears Project

Nick ferrone on why barber’s “adagio” gets a bad rap.

the yukon assignment soundtrack

[music sound effect]

TERRANCE MCKNIGHT: This is the Open Ears Project.

[Harmonica]

NICK FERRONE: My name is Nick Ferrone, I live in Brooklyn and by day, I'm a real estate agent, and by night, I'm a harmonica player. You can often find me playing at Sunny's in Red Hook on Saturday nights.

[MUSIC PLAYING: Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings]

I've chosen Samuel Barber's adagio for strings . It's a piece that I've always loved since I first heard it.

It was in Platoon back, I think, in 1986. I saw the film in Brooklyn. there was a theater on Flatbush, right off of Seventh Avenue, right above the Q train station… some people will know that.

And, I was really moved by that piece of music and I got it pretty much straight away and started listening to it.

The first few times I heard that piece, I thought, wow, this composer is so interesting. He actually added some voices near the crescendo. I swore there was, there was a chorus behind the strings.

It turns out it's either just the violas or it's an overtone, I-I still haven't figured it out. I still like to pretend I'm hearing those voices.

It's the pace. It's simple. The theme is pretty basic, it's sort of a stepping up and stepping down and the tempo is part of what makes it – it's very slow.

He also, he leads with the violins, but during the piece, sometimes the violas take the lead and sometimes the cellos take the lead, it sort of mixes in and out.

So the cellos are starting to take over. It almost becomes like a conversation between the string sections and when it resolves so well at the end of each phrase.

I'm the seventh of eight kids, so I benefited from having older brothers and sisters who are playing records that my friends weren't getting to hear.

So we were listening to the Grateful Dead and the Allman brothers and Joni Mitchell, James Taylor. I was like, what, 12 or 13 and I was listening to Wake of the Flood over and over again in our family library.

But then one of my brothers brought home an album called Giant Step by Taj Mahal and he plays harmonica on that album.

He's an amazing musician and kind of a hero of mine. He's great on all of his instruments, but I especially liked his harmonica playing.

So I've been playing harp since I was maybe 13 or 14 years old.

It's sort of an overused expression or term these days, But I'm a very ADD person. That's why I'm good at real estate. It's a good job for that kind of character.

But the harmonica is… as someone who's got ADD, I’ve tried a few times in my life to learn to play the piano, for instance, I love the piano, but there's just something about getting beyond those basic lessons that I just can't do… unless you experience it, it's hard to explain.

If you are studying a lesson, the ADD brain will want to just sort of see what those notes down there sound like and, “oh, that's interesting. Let's play over there.”

And all of a sudden you're not doing the lesson, you're just sort of fooling around and you never quite get over that hump of learning the instrument.

Harmonica, on the other hand, they're very simple. I often have one with me. I play a lot of harmonica in the car when I'm in traffic. It's a great way to practice and also remain calm among the frustrated drivers of New York.

You know, when I'm playing harmonica, I try to create something original and beautiful and Barber sort of hit on a formula of instruments and tempo and theme that just resonate with people. It just works. And I'm fascinated by the chemistry of it, I suppose. there's a technical part to it, but then you get past that and it's just a thing of beauty really.

And a lot of people say it's sad and it is. It was used after JFK's death, it was used after 911.

It's often considered a song of mourning. But I like to say it's more melancholy, sort of a thoughtful sadness.

And I also think it's a beautiful thing, so how can that be just sad?

you could be on a beautiful lake in the mountains and have it on your headphones and you could just splendor at nature with this incredible music in your head.

I-I think it's almost unfair to the music that it's been adopted as sort of a funereal piece.

Just in thinking about, what is it like when you go to a funeral? You sort of have this deep conversation with your friends and family about this person you've lost and it kind of crescendos at this very moving moment where you, you're thinking so much about this person and then you walk away and you're sort of conducting your own life again .

That said, I definitely tapped into it when my daughter was going to the hospital for open heart surgery. And I definitely remember listening to this piece when she was in the hospital and we weren't able to be with her all the time, that was pretty difficult.

She had a condition called a patent ductus, which umm, is usually pretty minor and typically they wait until a child is two or three to do this corrective surgery, but hers was so on the extreme end that she was essentially bleeding internally, the term is failure to thrive.

I remember, after the surgery, the first time we saw her, she was on an adult bed in the ICU with lots of tubes going in and out of her. And she looks so vulnerable and injured, but better. You know, she was operating normally and that was a relief.

She thankfully had a fairly minor thing to repair, but when she was four months old, that was pretty tough to handle and leaving your baby in the hospital overnight is not fun. So… I certainly remember listening to it then.

But this is where I don't find it to be a sad piece always. There's something so humanly connected about it, and I think that's why people respond to it so deeply.

It's, oh, gosh, it's, I-I don't know how it does it, how this music does it but, sort of the continuum of the human experience of just being a person here on this planet and surviving its ups and downs.

[Theme music]

TERRANCE MCKNIGHT: That was Nick Ferrone. He’s a real estate agent and harmonica player. You might’ve heard him refer to it as the “harp” – that’s a nickname that blues musicians often use for the harmonica. He was talking to us about Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings.” It’s coming up right after this break. Stay with us.

TERRANCE MCKNIGHT: This is The Open Ears Project.

Be sure to listen in next week. We’ve got composer, violinist, and vocalist Caroline Shaw joining us. Fun fact, Caroline and Kendrick Lamar are the youngest people ever to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music. They were both 30 years old when they got it. But before all that … she was just a kid at music camp, hearing the music of Felix Mendelssohn for the first time.

CAROLINE SHAW: The memory of being 15 is very much a part of this piece for me. [Laughs] I think it’s important for us all to have music that we remember from a time when maybe we had this sense that anything is possible, and, as we get older, the world becomes more complicated and there's more friction in the air. But, I think it's really important to remember that feeling of possibility.

Sean Kingston Hit With Ten Charges Including Defrauding Jeweler of Nearly $500,000 After Home Raid

Kingston's mother faces eight charges for her role in the scheme.

Sean Kingston has racked up a whopping ten charges after his Florida home was raided last week .

According to TMZ , the Jamaican-American singer, born Kisean Paul Anderson, was handed the charges after the Broward County Sheriff's Office alleged that he was part of an organized scheme to defraud multiple companies. Along with Kingston, who was arrested in California, also taken into custody in connection with the raid, was his 61-year-old mother, Janice Turner. Among the charges are defrauding the First Republic Bank and Bank of America, a probation violation for trafficking stolen property, and grand theft of $86,500 for a custom bed.

According to legal documents, Kingston and Turner are accused of defrauding a jeweler of $480,000, a Cadillac Escalade dealer of $159,700, and other luxury businesses. Turner was released on a $160,000 bond on Monday (May 27) and faces eight charges, while Kingston, who's been held without bail, is due in San Bernardino court on Tuesday (May 28) for an extradition hearing before being sent to Florida.

While Attorney Dennis Card corroborated the allegations to NBC 6 Miami upon Kingston's arrest, the artist denied any wrongdoing in his Instagram Stories.

"People love negative energy!" Kingston wrote last Thursday (May 23). "I am good and so is my mother! My lawyers are handling everything as we speak."

AMC Theatres Leaked News of Beyonce Concert Film After Keeping Taylor Swift’s Project Top Secret

AMC Theatres CEO Admits to Leaking Beyonce Concert Film After Keeping Taylor Swift Project a Secret

AMC Theatres’ handling of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé ’s concert films isn’t exactly music to some fans’ ears.

The theater chain found great success when it partnered with the two Grammy winners to release Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour in October 2023 and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé two months later. But behind the scenes, some Hollywood studios and theater owners were reportedly not happy that AMC was the only chain to know about the existence of both films in advance, allowing them to put tickets on sale first.

“We couldn’t blow Taylor’s secret, and those theater chains who groused to you? They grossed $100 million in ticket sales,” Adam Aron , who serves as the CEO of AMC Theatres, said in an interview with Variety published on May 23. “It’s not like they sold diddly.”

But after some “bruised feelings” from studios and other theater owners, Variety reported that AMC gave its competition a super-secret heads-up about Beyoncé’s film before tickets went on sale.

“At least half a dozen movie circuits leaked the news,” Aron said. “Beyoncé was seriously thinking about not doing the movie at all because the secret was blown. So, they didn’t keep their word.”

The company’s decision to seemingly share the news of Beyoncé’s concert film with its competitors while keeping Swift’s movie top secret is sparking outrage from the BeyHive.

AMC Theatres CEO Admits to Leaking Beyonce Concert Film After Keeping Taylor Swift Project a Secret

“Beyoncé should NEVER conduct business with AMC Theatres again. The CEO of @AMCTheatres deliberately leaked information to their competition about the RENAISSANCE Film before tickets went on sale because of hurt feelings,” one fan wrote via X on May 23. “He did NOT respect Beyoncé enough to hold up his side of the business agreement and instead decided to run his mouth.”

Another user wrote , “I don’t expect Beyoncé to ever work with AMC theatres ever again. That was very unprofessional.”

Breaking Down All of Taylor Swifts Eras Tour Surprise Song Mash Ups and What They Could Mean

Previously, the “Crazy in Love” singer thanked the movie chain for its support of the movie .

“I am so deeply thankful to AMC and every team member who worked so hard on this film,” she wrote via Instagram in December 2023. “I just can’t thank all of you enough for your support. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done because of the short turn around time. I practically slept in the edit, color, and mix sessions. The race against time continued in order to get this film out so quickly. But it was so worth all the grind.”

According to Aron, both concert films were considered a success at the box office. As a result, the CEO expects AMC will unveil “two to three” concert films a year going forward.

Vince Staples Searches for Light on ‘Dark Times,’ His Most Vulnerable Project to Date: Album Review

By Peter A. Berry

Peter A. Berry

  • Tierra Whack Delivers on All of Her Potential With Kaleidoscopic ‘World Wide Whack’: Album Review 2 months ago

Vince Staples' "Dark Times"

Popular on Variety

Floating across a disembodied sound bed for “Justin,” Vince unspools a tale of a romance that almost was. The dream-like instrumental underscores the idea that true love is only a fantasy, and Vince’s naked honesty gives the impression of someone who’s looking to buy into the delusion: “Started talking ’bout the future and the ever-present past / Awkward silences and laughs got me feeling like we on the path to something.” It’s an earnestness that 19-year-old Vince might have made fun of, with the outcome of the story being a dramatic example of why. But Vince left his armor at Ramona Park.

Vince gets tender again for “Government Cheese.” Rapping in a tone that sounds like resignation, he sorts through the logistics of comforting an incarcerated homie through a phone call. He knows reality isn’t always good enough when you’re behind bars. “Asked how I was, he seen me on ABC / Told him that I was good, I wonder if he believed / Couldn’t tell him the truth / What kind of homie would I be?/Knowing these 15 minutes the only time that he free,” he spits over a squealing West Coast synth that colors the overcast piano. Equal parts bleak and merciful, it’s a tightrope act that plays out as a sullen version of 2Pac’s “Keep Ya Head Up”; Vince says you shouldn’t forget to smile, but his tepid delivery doesn’t convince you it will do any good.

He’s more convincingly upbeat on “Little Homies,” where denounces the virtues of crashing out. It could be corny, but Vince’s humor makes it all feel less heavy-handed. He also makes time for commentary on a world that’s oddly infatuated with gang culture and how much money you’ve got: “They arguing about my net worth over the net / They wanna find everything I ever did for the set / When every nigga living for it’s still living in debt.”

Though Vince is more sincere than usual, his technique and all-around intentionality are as sharp as ever, even if you might wish there were a “Lemonade” or “BagBak” to break up an effort that could use a splash of color. Vince’s subdued delivery matches the pensiveness of the project, but when combined with a lack of sonic variance, it can feel a bit monotonous in the middle. It’s a touch his pal ScHoolboy Q mastered with Blue Lips . Still, it’s a potent exercise in nuanced songwriting, even if the hooks aren’t always optimally distinct.

Swirling dreary beats with even more overcast thoughts, Dark Times is a lucid snapshot of melancholy. It lives up to its name. It’s dark out, but Vince presents a meticulous portrait of someone with just enough reason to wait for sunrise.

Years & Years’ Only Remaining Member Olly Alexander Officially Disbands Pop Project

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Years & Years has officially been disbanded as Olly Alexander steps away from being the synth-pop project’s sole remaining member. During a recent performance under his own name at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, the singer and songwriter told the audience: “I used to be in Years & Years, I used to be Years & Years, and now I’m just me.”

In 2021, Alexander took over Years & Years as a solo act ahead of the project’s third album, Night Call. The shift marked the departure of founding members Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Türkmen. Goldsworthy continued to tour with Alexander through 2023, while Türkmen shifted his focus to his grunge project Exit Kid.

“Obviously, I wish there wasn’t a war or this insane humanitarian crisis,” Alexander shared in response to the backlash. “I wish for peace, and I have found this experience, at times, extremely… I’ve just felt really sad and distressed. But I still believe it’s a good thing when people come together for entertainment. That’s why I wanted to do Eurovision.”

Years & Years released three studio albums throughout the duration of the project. Their debut, Communion , arrived in 2015, featuring the standouts “King,” “Shine,” “Eyes Shut,” and “Desire.” Its follow-up, 2018’s Palo Santo, was received more modestly than their breakthrough, but found success in “If You’re Over Me” and the Jax Jones collaboration “Play.”

In their final joint-statement as Years & Years in 2021, Alexander, Goldsworthy, and Türkmen wrote: “We want to thank you for the love and support you’ve given us over the years (& years).”
