Welcome to the Computer Vision Group at RWTH Aachen University!

The Computer Vision group has been established at RWTH Aachen University in context with the Cluster of Excellence "UMIC - Ultra High-Speed Mobile Information and Communication" and is associated with the Chair Computer Sciences 8 - Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, and Multimedia . The group focuses on computer vision applications for mobile devices and robotic or automotive platforms. Our main research areas are visual object recognition, tracking, self-localization, 3D reconstruction, and in particular combinations between those topics.

We offer lectures and seminars about computer vision and machine learning .

IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2024

Current state-of-the-art Video Object Segmentation (VOS) methods rely on dense per-object mask annotations both during training and testing. This requires time-consuming and costly video annotation mechanisms. We propose a novel Point-VOS task with a spatio-temporally sparse point-wise annotation scheme that substantially reduces the annotation effort. We apply our annotation scheme to two large-scale video datasets with text descriptions and annotate over 19M points across 133K objects in 32K videos. Based on our annotations, we propose a new Point-VOS benchmark, and a corresponding point-based training mechanism, which we use to establish strong baseline results. We show that existing VOS methods can easily be adapted to leverage our point annotations during training, and can achieve results close to the fully-supervised performance when trained on pseudo-masks generated from these points. In addition, we show that our data can be used to improve models that connect vision and language, by evaluating it on the Video Narrative Grounding (VNG) task. IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2024

Manually creating 3D environments for AR/VR applications is a complex process requiring expert knowledge in 3D modeling software. Pioneering works facilitate this process by generating room meshes conditioned on textual style descriptions. Yet, many of these automatically generated 3D meshes do not adhere to typical room layouts, compromising their plausibility, e.g., by placing several beds in one bedroom. To address these challenges, we present ControlRoom3D, a novel method to generate high-quality room meshes. Central to our approach is a user-defined 3D semantic proxy room that outlines a rough room layout based on semantic bounding boxes and a textual description of the overall room style. Our key insight is that when rendered to 2D, this 3D representation provides valuable geometric and semantic information to control powerful 2D models to generate 3D consistent textures and geometry that aligns well with the proxy room. Backed up by an extensive study including quantitative metrics and qualitative user evaluations, our method generates diverse and globally plausible 3D room meshes, thus empowering users to design 3D rooms effortlessly without specialized knowledge.

 

International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2024.

Accurately perceiving and tracking instances over time is essential for the decision-making processes of autonomous agents interacting safely in dynamic environments. With this intention, we propose Mask4Former for the challenging task of 4D panoptic segmentation of LiDAR point clouds. Mask4Former is the first transformer-based approach unifying semantic instance segmentation and tracking of sparse and irregular sequences of 3D point clouds into a single joint model. Our model directly predicts semantic instances and their temporal associations without relying on hand-crafted non-learned association strategies such as probabilistic clustering or voting-based center prediction. Instead, Mask4Former introduces spatio-temporal instance queries that encode the semantic and geometric properties of each semantic tracklet in the sequence. In an in-depth study, we find that promoting spatially compact instance predictions is critical as spatio-temporal instance queries tend to merge multiple semantically similar instances, even if they are spatially distant. To this end, we regress 6-DOF bounding box parameters from spatio-temporal instance queries, which are used as an auxiliary task to foster spatially compact predictions. Mask4Former achieves a new state-of-the-art on the SemanticKITTI test set with a score of 68.4 LSTQ.

Department 2: Computer Vision and Machine Learning

Perceptual Computing  in general and Computer Vision in particular have great potentials to change the way we interact with computers and how machines such as robots perceive the world. Over the last three decades significant progress has been made in computer vision. Today it is possible to use image information for quality control and domain specific problems such as face recognition, recovery of CAD models for well-defined objects and basic visual surveillance. Robustness of perception and vision algorithms however is a notorious problem and one of the major bottlenecks for industrial applications. At the same time there is little doubt that in the next decades small and inexpensive sensors will be developed and embedded in many devices. Our hypothesis is that the integration of multiple features and sensors facilitates robustness in environments of realistic complexity.

The computer vision and machine learning department was founded by Bernt Schiele in 2010 and currently consists of six research groups headed by Jonas Fischer, Margret Keuper, Jan Eric Lenssen, Gerard Pons-Moll, Paul Swoboda, and Bernt Schiele.

The i2CAT Foundation is looking for a PhD student who is eager to get involved in exciting Research and Innovation projects which are part of the Horizon Europe framework, as well as Catalan and Spanish research programs. 

The suitable candidate will join the Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) research area. This area holds expertise in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning; and applies this knowledge in the verticals of media entertainment, ambient intelligence, mobility, telecommunications, manufacturing, energy, sustainability and cybersecurity. Our team is an active player in the European research ecosystem. 

The selected candidate will start out working on the following European Horizon projects side by side with our European partners:

XRECO: The objective of this project is to build technology that paves the way for transforming the use of XR media content from being something occasionally involved in media production to being something regularly integrated in the media industry.  DAI will be involved to create a set of AI-based media transformation services built around the NMR (neural media repositories) to produce novel media and XR experiences, including 3D neural reconstructions, image enhancement, and improve holoportation. Didymos: This project focuses on advancing the state of the art of enabling technologies to allow for the creation of large-scale digital twins, synchronized in real-time with the real world. DAI will participate in the 3D reconstruction, sensor data enhancement, and the semantic scene understanding tasks.

Within the projects, depending on the candidate's strengths and interests, as well as the current requirements of the projects, the phd student will focus on subjects such as:

  • 2D, and 3D (Point clouds) data enhancement, compression for 3d reconstruction and volumetric rendering 
  • Exploration of deep learning methods (e.g: upsampling methods or view synthesis methods) to enhance data/image quality, clean input data, fill gaps and self occlusions for 2D and 3D data (point clouds)
  • Exploration of deep learning methods such as autoencoders to improve the resolution/compression efficiency for 2D and 3D data (point clouds).
  • Exploration of new view synthesis and 3D volumetric reconstruction methods

Principal tasks 

  • Plan and execute cutting-edge research to advance the state-of-the-art.
  • Collaborate with other researchers, and engineers to prototype software solutions.
  • Carry out a study of the state-of-the-art on the subject topic. 
  • Identify, document and prioritize a set of scientific and technical challenges.
  • Propose and implement innovative approaches overcoming identified challenges.
  • Develop highly scalable algorithms based on machine learning and neural network methodologies.
  • Develop a validation prototype and conduct evaluation of the proposed approaches.
  • Analyze, process, and annotate large datasets for use in the training and evaluation of AI systems for use in both research and production tasks.
  • Author and publish the developed work in international conferences and journals, and potentially contribute to patents.
  • Participate in the project tasks (meetings, deliverables, integration, etc.).

Where will you do it?

At i2CAT we already have an established ‘work-from-home’ policy for some time. You can work from home or from the office, whichever suits you best. We expect that you attend the office two days per week: one to stay connected with your team and another one to engage with other colleagues

If you decide to come to the office, we are located in Zona Universitària, next to the Campus Nord of the UPC, within a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. It is a very well-connected area (metro, tram, bus) with bars and restaurants around.

Requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently has or in the process of obtaining a M.S, in machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, computer vision, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data science, or related technical fields
  • Knowledge of fundamentals in relevant areas of Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
  • Experience with some machine learning and state-of-the-art deep learning models (CNN, NERFS, VAE, GAN, Graphs)
  • Experience coding in Python, C++, or similar programming language
  • Experience working with Deep Learning frameworks such as Pytorch, Keras and/or Tensorflow.
  • Excellent analytical, technical, and problem solving skills.
  • Analytical mind-set able to propose solutions to new and known problems and carry on research proactively
  • Excellent English level, both written and oral.
  • Highly motivated 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing machine learning algorithms or machine learning infrastructure in Python or C/C++.
  • 1+ years of experience in Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence or Computer Graphics, or related fields.
  • Expertise in tools like Docker, git, Jira
  • Knowledge of Spanish and/or Catalan
  • Experience in a research environment such as a university or research center.
  • Existing scientific articles and publications (include references with application)

Imagine a day when people focus their smartphone cameras on a sign language speaker and have their gestures instantly translated on their screens—that’s Xuan Zhang ’s research goal.

A fifth-year doctoral candidate in the Department of Computer Science, Zhang originally came to Hopkins to dive deeper into her study of machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision to bolster her sign language research, but she quickly discovered there was much more to learn.

“At first, I simply thought sign language was really beautiful,” she says. But when she took an introductory course in American Sign Language at the Krieger School, “it made me realize how ignorant I was and how much I took my privilege of hearing for granted. I learned about Deaf culture and the struggles the community has been through, and it made me consider how I could be more respectful in my research.

“The more I learned, the more I realized how important it is to reduce the communication gap between the Deaf and hearing worlds,” she says.

Supported by a JHU + Amazon Initiative for Interactive AI Fellowship , Zhang is researching sign language recognition and translation tasks with the aim of developing a large vision-language model capable of translating signed words into spoken language.

At present, she is working on integrating valuable linguistic insights—such as fingerspelling, where words are articulated letter by letter, and classifiers, which are shapes and movements that represent entire classes of words—into modern sign language processing methods, which currently neglect these techniques despite their frequent use by the Deaf community.

“My goal is to build a more robust, linguistically nuanced sign language processing system that transcends the conventional limitations of technology,” she says.

Zhang plans to continue her research on real-time sign language translation after completing her PhD this summer, with the ultimate goal of turning her findings into practical tools to benefit the Deaf community. She stresses the necessity of interdisciplinary expertise and collaboration in advancing her mission.

“I’m convinced that when we bring our heads together, pooling our diverse expertise, we can create something truly amazing,” she says. “It’s this kind of teamwork that I believe will lead us to develop more inclusive and useful communication tools for the Deaf community.”
