I can't imagine my college life without Evernote! It's perfect for organizing my notes and keeping track of assignments. I love the ease of use and the fact that I can access my notes from anywhere. Definitely one of the best apps out there!
Michele Graves
As a college student, I'm always on the lookout for useful essay apps. I've used Evernote before for note-taking, but I didn't know it had additional features for planning and organizing. I'll have to explore its Premium options.
I've been using Google Docs for a while now, but I'm open to trying other alternatives, especially offline essay apps, as I travel a lot. This list gives me plenty of options to consider!
I love the idea of using Hanx Writer for a nostalgic typewriter experience… It sounds like a fun way to get creative with my text. I'll give this app a shot with an english essay and see how it feels🙃

- Clear Thesis Statement: An A+ essay must have a strong and clear thesis statement that presents the main argument or point of view.
- Comprehensive Research: Extensive research with credible sources is crucial for providing in-depth analysis and supporting arguments effectively.
- Proper Structure and Formatting: The essay should have a well-organized structure with a logical flow of ideas from introduction to conclusion.

How to write a strong essay thesis
To write a strong essay thesis statement, you should begin by clearly identifying the main topic or argument of your essay. Your thesis statement should be concise and specific, providing a roadmap for the reader on what to expect in the rest of the paper.
Make sure your thesis is arguable and not a statement of fact. Next, consider the key points you want to make in support of your thesis. These points will guide the structure of your essay and should be logically organized for a coherent flow of ideas.
The final step in writing a strong essay thesis is to revise and refine it. This step is crucial because it allows you to improve the clarity, coherence, and overall effectiveness of your thesis statement.
During revision, pay attention to the language you have used and make sure it is precise and specific. Consider whether your thesis accurately reflects the main argument or topic of your essay.

11 Apps That Write Essays for You (and Improve Quality)
Last Updated on February 28, 2023 by Alex Birkett
Writing essays is a time-consuming task.
It requires research, structuring, formatting, and plenty of editing. As such, it’s no wonder that students often seek out help from external sources.
One of the most popular solutions in recent years are essay writing apps.
But what exactly are they? And do they work as advertised? Let’s dive into the details.
What Are Essay Writing Apps?
Essay writing apps are digital tools that help you to write better essays.
They typically come with features like spellcheckers, grammar checkers, and idea generators to help spur your writing process forward.
Some also offer pre-written content that you can use as a starting point for your own essay.
The idea is that these tools save you time and energy so you can focus on crafting great ideas instead of getting bogged down with tedious tasks like proofreading or finding research materials.
Do Essay Writing Apps Really Work?
The short answer is yes – but with some caveats.
While these apps can certainly be helpful in terms of providing assistance with proofreading and idea generation, they won’t be able to write entire essays for you from scratch like some people may believe.
Moreover, while some apps offer pre-written content that could be useful as a starting point for your essay, it’s important to remember that this isn’t an excuse to plagiarize or copy other people’s work without crediting them properly; if caught doing so, it could have serious consequences for your academic career.
What Are the Best Essay Writing Apps Available?
The best essay writing apps will have some of the following abilities:
- They generate net new content
- They help you format and ideate the structure of your essay
- They improve your writing style
- They have grammar, spelling, plagiarism, and style detection
- They can help you research factual information about the topic
- They’re “multi-purpose tools” that allow for custom functionalities
- They’re affordable.
I’ll judge the following of the best essay apps below on the above characteristics.
Editor’s note: I’m going to use some affiliate links when possible to try to earn some revenue from my content. These don’t change the opinions espoused in the content nor the style in which they are written. If I think a product sucks, I’m not going to say otherwise. This is just a bonus and a way to fund the whole operation. Anyway, enjoy the article!
11 Apps That Write Essays for You
- ProWritingAid
- Hypotenuse AI
Jasper is an AI-powered essay writing app that helps you organize, write, and format your essays faster.
It’s functionally an all-purpose AI text generator , with a Google Docs / MS Word style editor you can use in conjunction with custom commands.
You can also hook it up with Grammarly to find spelling mistakes, punctuation mistakes, run on sentences, and other grammatical mistakes in real time.
They’ve got a few different modes (as part of their broader Boss Mode plan):
Focus mode is for pure writing, a simple word processor (but with an AI assistant attached). The focus writer is where I spend a lot of my time in this tool.
Chat mode is just like ChatGPT (more on that later)
SEO mode hooks up with Surfer SEO to give you keyword suggestions in addition to your regular spell checking and generative essay writer functionality.
And power mode unlocks all of their use case templates, recipes, and commands.
Overall, Jasper is hands down the most powerful AI writing software. Premium features like SEO mode, Chat mode, and Power mode are only available on their Boss Mode plan, so I’d opt for that one.
It does seem to struggle with research papers and reference materials, so make sure you’ve got your citations on lock before you start writing. They also lack a web clipper tool, but their browser extension tool does give you the ability to write content everywhere.
They also have drawing tools and art generation capabilities , by the way.
Price : Starts at $24/mo. Boss Mode plan begins at $49/month
G2 Score: 4.8/5
Frase is a web-based writing tool that uses AI to help writers create high-quality essays quickly.
They’ve got a whole suite of SEO tools , including a content brief and content research tool, content optimization software, and generative AI tools to help you write content.
Their content brief and research tool is of particular interest here.
Most of the best essay writing app options on this list focus only on text generation or rewriting; few focus on actually helping you format your piece in the first place, which is often where the hard work is.
Then, for their AI writing tool, they feature a ton of helpful templates, including “explain why,” “bullets to paragraphs,” and a metaphor / analogy tool:
Price: Only $14.99/mo ($12 per month when paid annually).
ChatGPT was launched in 2022 by OpenAI (the creators of GPT-3, which powers most of the writing software on this list).
It has brought generative AI to the mainstream, and it’s already one of the best writing apps for all purposes.
It acts as a chat interface, so it’s much more intuitive than many of the dedicated AI writing software out there.
Basically, you can ask it or prompt it to write…anything. I’ve used it to generate creative stories, write love poems, make me ideas for essays, improve my writing skills, and build outlines for SEO-focused content.
Let’s walk through a use case. I took a history class in college called “US history from 1945 to the present.” I’ll ask ChatGPT to create me some topic ideas:
Pretty good! I like the cold war idea, so I’ll ask it to create an outline for me:
Okay, maybe I’d want to change up a few pieces of this, but let’s go with it. Here’s the full essay:
Crazy! And that’s just a first pass. I could further tweak the outputs with better instructions.
This stuff is getting scary good.
Price: Free
G2 Score: NA
4. Writesonic
Writesonic is a YC-backed startup that makes generative AI tools capable of writing essays.
I’m a big fan of this product.
They’ve got a ton of ready-made templates to get you started out (including a few that are great for writing essays). They’ve also got a few templates that can help you improve your writing style or even rewrite content so its better formatted.
Finally, they’ve got a Google Docs style editor for long form writers so you can use commands and write alongside the AI.
G2 Score: 4.8/5
Copy AI is another AI copywriting tool built on top of GPT-3.
It primarily writes essays through use case templates. A few that are popular for the writing process include:
- Essay intro
- Essay outline
- Explain like I’m 5
- Sentence rewriter
- Analogy generator
For example, look at this need little essay writer app that lets you build an outline for your essay:
The sentence rewriter and analogy generator are two examples that can help you improve your writing style.
Copy AI doesn’t have the same flexibility and power that Jasper and ChatGPT have, but it’s much easier to use. The templates are well set up and foolproof. And they have many that actually help you format text and design the scope of your piece, not just write it.
Overall, I’m a big fan of this tool.
Price: Free for up to 2000 words and then $49/mo for unlimited word counts.
6. ProWritingAid
ProWritingAid is a cool professional writing software that uses AI to generate content.
It’s great for academic papers and academic writing. Unlike many other essay writing services, this one incorporates grammar checking, spell check, style checking, plagiarism checking, and word count into the content they produce.
They’ve built custom solutions for higher education, teachers, non-native English speakers, and creatives.
I like this one because it lets users create content from scratch, but it’s also got features to improve your writing (this is powerful for college students especially).
Got some handwritten notes that you want to whip up into a good essay? This one is great at processing hand written notes and producing great content.
Pro Writing Aid works via browser, but they’ve got integrations that allow for offline access and desktop software as well – such as a Scrivener integration and an MS Word integration.
Overall, a great product with a free app that allows for up to 500 words.
Price: Completely free for up to 500 words, and then $10 per month for unlimited use.
G2 Score: 4.5/5
7. Speedwrite
Speedwrite is one of the most popular writing applications out there. It helps you write essays from scratch as well as rephrasing your existing content.
How’s it work? Basically, through “predictions.” You just enter text and hit the “predict” button (they call their text generations “predictions”). This then takes your content and paraphrases it using their artificial intelligence.
This makes it useful for everything from writing notes to polishing up existing texts.
They’ve got tons of users (roughly 500k+). They claim to have written millions of lines of text, and all of this is fresh, original content with good style and grammar.
While Speedwrite has some downsides (it’s not great with structured diagrams or starting with a blank page), it’s still popular. Anyway, there are a ton of great Speedwrite alternatives you can check out.
One cool thing is you can use this tool completely free.
Here’s an example of a “prediction” based on the above text.
Price: Free and the only $19.99 per month
Lex is a new AI writer that I’ve just started trying out. I love it so far.
It’s different from the others. It’s aimed at writers. Many of the other tools help non-writers produce content. This one is no-frills, just a Google Docs / Microsoft Word style editor and an auto complete functionality.
And to be honest: the outputs are pretty darn good. I only write the first two sentences here and then let Lex finish it:
Lex can also be used on both ios devices as well as android devices (instructions in the app).
As far as I know, the tool is free, but I’m sure they’ll introduce a standard pricing model soon. You have to get on a waitlist to get access.
Price : Free
G2 Score: NA
Rytr is a similar tool to Jasper, Copy AI, and Writesonic. It was also built on GPT-3 technology, so it’s got many of the same outputs and templates as these tools.
The biggest difference with Rytr is its price. They’re one of the most affordable apps that write essays for you, starting at just $9/mo (plus a free plan).
This is a great starter app.
Price: free, and then $9/mo
G2 Score: 4.7/5
10. Hypotenuse AI
Hypotenuse AI started out as an ecommerce-focused AI tool, but it has since expanded.
Like other tools on this list, they’ve got one of the best essay writing capabilities out there.
The reason I’m adding them to this list, though, is their content detective feature. This allows you to research content with citations. Most tools suffer from factual inaccuracies, which is obviously a huge problem when it comes to academic writing.
Hypotenuse is working to solve that, and for that, I applaud them.
Price: Starts at $24/mo
G2 Score: 4.4/5
11. Word AI
Word AI is a sweet tool built for two things: content rewriting, and scale.
You can essentially do like 1000 rewrites based on your initial content. This is helpful for SEO folks hoping to do link building and guest posting at scale.
For the essay writers among us? It’s great for coming up with clear copy and rewriting your piece to enrich your text, split sentences, and improve the clarity of your writing.
I will say, transparently, this is not one of my favorite tools out there. I think it’s a little clunky for most use cases and it’s best for spinning up a ton of content for SEO.
However, I wanted to include it on the list because it’s one of the best at content production at scale.
Price: $57/month
G2 Score: 3.9/5
At the end of the day, essay writing apps can be incredibly useful resources if used correctly by students or writers who need assistance crafting their stories or arguments more effectively and efficiently than ever before.
However, it’s important to remember that these tools don’t replace actual human effort – they’re meant to supplement it – so make sure not to rely too heavily on them or allow them to take away from the creativity in your own work!
In that way, “apps that write essays for you” is sort of a myth. You’ll still need to provide the human intelligence 🙂
With all this in mind, don’t forget to do your own research into which app is right for you before committing – good luck!

Use for: Transcriptions and dictation Pricing: $1.25 per minute of audio
Rev is another useful dictation app for writers. Using the iPhone or Android app, you can dictate a draft into your phone and then upload it to Rev for transcription by a human at $1 a minute. Alternatively, if you interview someone, you can save time by transcribing these interviews to write better non-fiction articles. It’s more accurate than using a dictaphone but at a cost. If you’re on a budget, use an AI transcription service. Read our Rev review .
Collaboration tools are an excellent way for writers to collaborate on a project. This is especially useful when multiple authors work on a novel, screenplay, or presentation. Many of these tools allow for feedback and tracking changes, ensuring smooth communication among the team members. Here are our top recommendations for collaborative tools:
Use for: Word processor Pricing: Free
Google Docs is a free writing app and an excellent alternative to Microsoft Word. It’s a reliable choice if you like collaborating with other writers or an editor online. It works almost anywhere, assuming you have a reliable internet connection. Its functionality for handling large documents, like a book, has also dramatically improved.
Zoho Writer is less known than Google Docs or Microsoft Word. Zoho Writer offers a writing assistant to help with readability, grammar, and more issues. It also allows live collaboration with team members and offline editing in your browser. Plus, there are a decent number of templates or formatting options. It’s split into three workspaces: Compose, Review, and Distribute, where you can write the content, work with collaborations and then publish or share it. Read our Zoho Writer review .
Screenwriting tools are tailored explicitly to screenwriters and playwrights. They peroxide a structured environment for screenwriters with outlines, formatting, and timeline generation. Often, they have built-in templates that adhere to industry standards, helping bring their ideas to life with ease.
Use for: Writing movie scripts Pricing: F$199.95
Script Studio is a versatile app best suited for scriptwriters. However, it can also be used for other works, such as novels. The most notable feature of this app is the inclusion of popular movie scripts that can be used as a model for your work. Use for: Screenwriting Pricing: $99.99/month
Final Draft is the default app of choice for screenwriters. I’ve experimented with Final Draft, and it strikes me as an example of powerful writing software but with a bigger learning curve than your typical word processor. Read our Final Draft review .

1. FocusWriter
Our expert review:
Specifications
Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.
FocusWriter helps writers combat one of their biggest challenges: distractions. One of the best free writing software tools out there, it's specifically designed to let you just concentrate on your writing.
The stripped-back interface is deliciously sparse - ideal for when you just need to get your head down and write - and not dissimilar to a moderately powerful version of Notepad, featuring support for TXT, basic, RTF, and ODT files.
Even the toolbar is hidden until you actually need it. Just swoop your cursor to the top on the screen to reveal a barren menu, from basic formatting to themes and timers.
Features are light within the software, but FocusWriter isn’t made for heavy editing sessions. It’s designed to make the act of writing flow seamlessly onto the page.
Elsewhere, the writing app boasts the ability to add themes and your own background images, which can help you stay motivated.
The Daily Progress tool is a sweet extra, adding Duolingo-style gamification that lets you track your daily writing streak. For when it’s oh-so-easy to slip onto social media when you can’t find the perfect word, it’s a nice way to keep you within the app.
Available for Windows, Linux, and macOS, the writing software also comes as a portable download, no installation required. So, you can pop it on a USB stick and plug it into any computer you’re working on.

2. WriteMonkey
WriteMonkey is another piece of free writing software that cuts down on the clutter to deliver uninterrupted writing sessions.
The free word processor, cleverly described as zenware, is unbelievably pared back compared to more traditional writing apps.
There’s very little in the way of distracting ‘screen furniture’, which means you’re better positioned to concentrate on the writing process. And absolutely nothing else.
But don’t let that stripped-back approach fool you. As one of the best free writing apps, WriteMonkey is still rich with the sort of core features that matter to writers.
However, most options are hidden in a context menu (so you’ll need to right-click to view it). It also only supports TXT files, which may limit those looking to read, write, or edit across multiple formats. It is, at least, a portable download, letting you take it wherever you need.
If you’ve enjoyed Markdown, the simplified text-editing language that lets you format, annotate, classify, and link as you type, then great. WriteMonkey’s inner workings will instantly chime.
First-timers should spend a little time with this free writing software, to uncover that intuitive simplicity.

3. LibreOffice Writer
Writer, the open-source, free writing software, serves almost all general writing needs.
LibreOffice is a near-perfect example of free office software - a familiar, feature-rich take on the office suite. What the veteran software package lacks in Microsoft polish (its interface is undeniably old-fashioned, for starters), it makes up for in its price-point: free. For that, you get access to six tools: Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, Math, and Writer.
Earning it a slot on our list of best free writing apps is the fact that LibreOffice Writer packs the full editing toolbox.
This isn’t just a note-taking app for staving off distractions when you’re deep in the zone; it’s for when you’re in pure writer-mode.
If you’re at all proficient with Microsoft Word, you won’t have any problems using the Writer software. Layouts and functions are almost identical, and there’s support for DOC and DOCX file types, making it efficient to switch out of the Microsoft garden.
This free writing app is ideal if you’re hunting for a tool that almost perfectly replicates the Word experience without the cost.

4. Microsoft Word
When it comes to word processors, Microsoft Word is probably the baseline against which all others are compared. It’s the one most of us use at school, home, and work. It’s familiar, comfortable - and it’s available free on the web and mobile devices.
That may not be the best way to write your masterpiece (unless you’ve hooked up a Bluetooth keyboard). But it’s a great way to jot down ideas on-the-go. When we tested the browser-based version we found it could be a bit slow at first, and we were typing faster than the words appeared on screen. This settles down (mostly) after a minute or so.
Microsoft’s free writing apps on Android and iPhone had no such issues. Using these was velvety smooth. We especially appreciated the option to switch between mobile view and desktop view, so we could gauge how the document would appear in full-screen.
As with Google Docs, you’ll need to sign up with a Microsoft account. And, like Google, that also lets you use free versions of PowerPoint, Excel, and the like. While Word offers one of the best free writing app experiences, there’s no denying that the paid-for upgrade is superior, offering more tools, and a true desktop app.

Author promises to make it easier to ‘think, write, and cite’. It’s a promise capably delivered, with a clean interface and bags of writing features designed to make it easy to go from first draft to final copy.
If you're an Apple user in search of the best free writing apps on macOS, this one demands your attention.
Concept Maps is one of the best features. It’s a great mind-mapping tool to visualize and lay down all your thoughts while they’re fresh in your head without constraint. You can worry about whipping them into shape later.
Students and report writers will appreciate Author’s ‘fast citing’ tools - speeding up assignment-writing by correctly adding and formatting citations, references, and contents.
A paid-for upgrade of the writing software that offers exporting options is available. However, unless you need automatic formatting on export, you can stick with the free version.
6. Google Docs
Google Docs is a great free writing platform for any writer. It’s an extremely clean, quick word processor available in the browser, on desktop, and phone and tablet apps. So, you can take notes wherever inspiration strikes.
Docs is more or less Google’s spin on Microsoft Word. The interface is a bit more simple than the professional office software - although it’s no less powerful.
You’ll find heaps of writing tools, including a pretty accurate speech-to-text transcription tool (just enunciate and don’t talk too fast). Keyboard shortcuts are very well-supported.
For best results, you’ll need an internet connection, though documents can be used offline. They’ll be synced, and in our experience, that happens swiftly behind the scenes.
To take advantage of the free writing app, you’ll need a Google account, which may be a deal-breaker for some - but that also opens up the rest of the Google-stuff in the Google-sphere, such as Sheets, Slides, and . With a free account, you get 15GB of storage, which should be more than enough for word documents. A Google One subscription upgrades your storage space, amongst other things.
Additionally, Google Docs is great if you want to collaborate with one or more other writers. Just be warned to stay in Google Docs for that, because exporting the data into Word or other writing applications can result formatting errors.

What's the difference between a writing app and an AI writer?
AI writers vs writing apps - what's the real difference?
Artificial intelligence is growing in a big way - and when it comes to writing, it's ChatGPT that's been snatching all the headlines of late, with its ability to generate short- and long-form content based on user prompts.
Generally, an AI writer will write your content for you, based on its current learning (although often without 'understanding' the context). A writing app simply lets you write your way, in your own voice.
Some platforms, such as Canva , have even integrated AI into its Canva Docs and Canva PDF Editor services. However. its Magic Write tool acts as a writing assistant, serving up suggestions and ideas, leaving real writers to work their magic on the content. Though usually hiding in the back-end, you can also find AI integrated in other ways across other the best PDF editor apps (and even the best free PDF editor apps, too).
As always with AI-generated content, whether it's the written word or an artwork masterpiece, human involvement is usually necessary and always desirable. Even if you're using the best AI writers out there, editing and proofreading is essential to give the content accuracy and emotional resonance.
How to choose the best free writing app for you
When deciding which free writing app is best, start by figuring out what sort of writing you want to do.
Do you need a handy tool for quick scribbles and jotting down ideas here and there, or are you using the writing software to write and edit an epic novel? Tools like FocusWriter and Write Monkey are great for getting thoughts on the page without friction.
It’s also worth considering if you need a writing app with a distraction-free design, so you can concentrate on what really matters to you. Again, FocusWriter performs admirably here, but as a result, you lose core typography and editing functions. Unlike LibreOffice, this isn’t the best Microsoft Office alternative if you need those tools. In that scenario, it may be worth considering looking at some of the best free office software , which includes MS Word-style apps, alongside other tools similar to Excel, PowerPoint, and so on.
Access is an important factor when using your writing software. A tool like Scribus needs to be downloaded to your machine. Lightweight apps like FocusWriter, however, offer a portable download that can be downloaded to a USB and carried with you.
Check what file formats your chosen writing app supports, too. While some let you create and edit the common DOC and DOCX files, others only allow TXT or RTF documents.
But most of all, it’s important to choose the best free writing app for your unique creative flow.
Testing the best free writing apps and software, we assess how easy it is to get your words down on the page with the least amount of friction. Portable writing apps rank high, because they let you use the program on whatever computer or laptop you’re using.
We also look at performance for its intended audience. For distraction-free writing apps, do they really foster focus? For word processor-style software, does it offer good formatting and editing options?
Most importantly, we expect to see free writing apps that are genuinely cost-free - no-one wants to stumble across hidden fees and charges in the contracts.

Getting a passing grade on an essay assignment is difficult if students don’t know how to organize their ideas. Bloggers can also not get high SEO rankings when they plagiarize their writing.
If you’re looking for applications that help you write better essays, I compiled a list of the best essay writing software. These apps include both free and paid programs. I included tools to help you improve your grammar and an app that writes essays for you.
10 Best Essay Writing Apps
Grammarly is one of the best writing apps you can try for your essays. It helps you perfect your essay or any writing project by giving detailed explanations for its corrections.
For instance, if you mistakenly use “see” instead of “sea” in your sentence, Grammarly will tell you why it’s wrong. This editing software is the most popular writing tool because it focuses on correctness, clarity, engagement, and delivery.
While it doesn’t help you summarize or format your essays, it can fix issues like your spelling, grammar, writing style, and punctuation. Grammarly lets you set your writing goals so it can tailor its corrections according to your essay’s intent, audience, and emotion.
Grammarly Premium gives you access to a plagiarism checker. It examines your document against billions of websites and articles while providing links to any duplicate content.
The editing tool has a more straightforward interface than ProWritingAid. Or you can download the free extension for Chrome and Safari if you want to receive real-time suggestions on Google Docs.
Grammarly is also available as a desktop or mobile application, Grammarly Keyboard. The keyboard app quickly spots spelling mistakes and other issues on your text messages, email, and social media.
- Built-in spelling and grammar checker.
- Produces more grammar reports than other apps.
- Guarantees original content through a plagiarism checker.
- Multiple platform availability.
- Not ideal for long-form writing.
- Free version is very basic.
Pro Writing Aid
ProWritingAid is a cloud-based tool that enhances your writing in different ways. It’s not a word processor or rewriter for essay writers but an editor for users who want to improve their grammar and spelling.
The premium version can spot over 20 errors in your essay, including repeated sentence starts and over-reliance on adverbs. The writer can also take advantage of readability reports, sticky sentences, and subject-verb disagreement.
The online editor not only corrects your grammatical mistakes. It also helps you become a better writer. For example, using adverbs and the passive voice are not necessarily “errors.” But avoiding these elements can help your essay readers engage with your content better.
Aside from checking grammar, ProWritingAid also scans your essay for plagiarism. It ensures your document is original and free from duplications. The essay writing software provides a link to the source so you can correctly cite it.
ProWritingAid has browser extensions and a desktop version. The powerful tool also features a 14-day trial for writers who want to test it first. You can also use it in Google Docs, Scrivener, and Chrome.
This advanced grammar checker is available for $20 per month or $79 per year.
- Simple interface.
- Wide platform availability.
- Twenty-five types of writing reports.
- Free trial.
- Lifetime plan.
- Unnecessary features like sticky sentences.
- Slow loading time.
Writing essays becomes more motivating when you use FreeMind. This software isn’t your typical editing tool that performs grammar checking. It helps you achieve daily goals in writing through structure diagrams and project tracking.
This app for writing essays improves your writing habit by letting you add subtasks for each activity. It will allow you to organize your essay ideas on any topic to produce impactful writing.
Another extra feature of Free Mind is its time recording element. Brainstorm your work, use colors, and take advantage of DES encryption to produce and protect your mind maps.
- Helps users make flowcharts and mind maps for essays.
- Perfect for other types of project planning.
- Protects your work from being lost.
- Completely free.
- No grammar-checking tool.
- Difficult to use for first-timers.
- Not specifically designed for essay writing.
Among the numerous writing applications, Edusson is the most interesting for its wide variety of features. The essay writing app writes essays for you, ensuring they are free from grammar mistakes and have a proper sentence structure .
Content writers will save more time coming up with a topic idea for their next post. An additional feature of Edusson is its self-help resources. The website also includes essay samples its writers produce to let everyone know they make high-quality papers.
Edusson does not offer offline mode because it’s not an AI writer. The app lets you order assignments for a real writer to write. These writers also ensure that your work is free from grammatical mistakes.
Whether you write blog content, academic papers, or magazine articles, this assignment writer is for you. Use it on your desktop or download the mobile application for more writing ideas.
- Real writers help you with your essay.
- Ideal for other types of writing.
- Easy to use for beginners.
- May take time before you get your assignment.
If you’re looking for an essay writing app with a basic interface made for note-taking only, Simplenote is your best choice. Like other writing tools, it lets you jot down ideas and concepts for your document. But it doesn’t have advanced features.
You can organize your text through Markdown, a standard syntax like HTML but more straightforward. If you’re a web developer or a programmer, you know how fantastic markdown is for readability.
Long-form writers benefit the least from Simplenote because the app is developed for hand-written notes and ideas. It also doesn’t feature a virtual proofreader, file importing, and comprehensive formatting.
- Best app for writing notes.
- Markdown support.
- No grammar and spell check.
- No automatic writing tool.
- No file imports and lists.
Libre Office Writer
Writer is LibreOffice’s app for essay writers that is available for free. Its free yet advanced writing abilities are inspired by Microsoft Word. It has basic features like font styles, sizes, insert pictures, layout settings, and referencing. It also displays your character count.
The desktop app is ideal for academic writing that requires strict formats and layouts. It’s an excellent alternative to Google Docs and Word, the most popular word processors on the market.
One downside to Libre Office Writer is its lack of a built-in grammar and spelling checker. You need to edit your work on third-party tools like Grammarly for corrections.
- Free alternative to MS Word.
- Comprehensive formatting and layout options.
- Reputable word processor.
- No grammar checker.
Scribus is a fantastic choice among writers who want to produce aesthetically pleasing projects. Millions of writers use this software for reports, magazines, academic writing, or even your personal journal.
The open-source tool doesn’t help you organize your ideas or correct grammar. Instead, it focuses on one aspect of your writing: your book layout. You can use the Layers, Outline, Styles, and Properties to style every page of your book.
Many believe actual writing starts with the look of your document. Scribus is like a basic version of Adobe InDesign and Affinity Publisher. Use it for your essays, academic texts, and self-published books.
- Improves the layout of your written work.
- Free.
- No option for checking your spelling and grammar.
- Dated design.
Focus Writer
Focus Writer is a free word processing app you can use as an alternative to MS Word and Google Docs. The distraction-free writing app has a focus mode that blocks other windows and menus. All you have to do is write on the blank page.
But the essay writing services also offer several formatting options for different aspects of writing. Move your cursor upwards to reveal the menu. Focus Writer lets you set goals for your daily word count with a percentage bar displayed below to show your improvement.
You can use Focus Writer for simple essays, personal thoughts, and critiques.
But I don’t recommend it for academic writing. It also doesn’t have a built-in file editor for spelling errors.
- Straightforward interface.
- Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- Limited export formats.
- No collaboration options.
- No writing templates.
Evernote is a note-taking application for hand-written notes. You can create checklists, to-do lists, and other organizational elements in individual files. As an academic writing software tool, Evernote uses thematic Notebooks to help you group your writing projects into subjects.
One of the most valuable features of this app is its template gallery. The dozens of templates make Evernote a common choice of essay writers in work and school. It also has a clipper tool where you can take clippings and snippets from any site.
Evernote is also the only application with features for optical character recognition technology. That means this app for writing papers also searches scanned images of hand-writing.
- It helps users write to-do lists, notes, etc.
- Web clipping.
- Clean interface.
- Collaboration features.
- Basic free version.
- It keeps changing the layout and startup screen.
Jarvis or Jasper AI is not a proofreading software or a note-taking tool. It’s an app that writes essays for you without the user having to do anything. It works using Natural Language Processing to write paragraphs of blog articles for you.
The main focus of Jarvis is SEO. All the pieces of content it automatically writes ensure they will rank high on search engine result pages. It can also finish your first draft two to five times faster than a human.
This artificial intelligence software is perfect for content writers who must produce dozens of essays weekly. Use this tool for social media posts, ad copies, and blog posts.
- Automatic rewriter.
- SEO integration.
- Doesn’t include a plagiarism checker.
- The final piece of writing still requires human editing.
Is There a Software That Will Write Essays for You?
Many desktop and mobile software can automatically write essays for you. These “bots” are powered by artificial intelligence to make the writing sound human-like.
Some essay writers only require you to insert keywords or a specific topic. Then, it will create everything else for you. Jarvis or Jasper AI lets you pick a template, narrow the subject, and click “Generate AI content.”
Other AI writers need you to copy and paste a piece of text from other sources. Then, it will rewrite the entire content for you. Quillbot is a paraphrasing tool that produces plagiarism-free content for you. It can also summarize, shorten, or expand your writing.
Best Free Essay Writing Software
The best free essay writing tools you should have are ProWritingAid and FreeMind. The former is editing software that offers spelling, grammar, and style correction, while the latter helps you brainstorm your next essay. These two software programs are completely free.
Use FreeMind to plan your next essay. Different mind maps, time recording, and project tracking features will help you brainstorm your topic.
Once you’re done writing your essay, run it on ProWritingAid to check for issues. It provides over 20 writing reports to make your written document error-free and readable.
Research Paper Writing App
Some essay writing apps are specially developed for writing research papers, theses, and dissertations. For example, Libre Office Writer has all the formatting settings you need to write your research, including page numbers, text alignment, and a bibliography.
Another research paper writing app you can consider is Evernote. Although I wouldn’t recommend writing your research on this app, you can use this tool to make notes. Use it to organize your review of related literature, analyze your findings, or structure your intro.
There’s a Tool for Every Writing Goal
So many tools exist to help you plan, write, and edit your essays differently. I hope the list of best essay writing software stated above saves you more time and makes you a better writer.
My top choices are ProWritingAid and Grammarly because writers in all fields need them for proofreading purposes. Which essay writing tool are you trying first?

When You Write
22 Best Writing Apps: The First-Choice Writing Tools in 2024
Different kinds of writers—authors, bloggers, and freelancers, etc.—require different writing apps that have features best suited for the type of writing.
Therefore, finding the best writing apps is a unique undertaking for each writer. The market is flooded with lots of writing tools but finding the best writing software for you takes a lot of effort.
But if you’re reading this article, it means you have decided to research before committing to a particular tool.
Right decision!
For your convenience, I’ve compiled a list of the best writing apps that can make you a better writer and help increase your productivity (Hint – Grammarly and Scrivener topped the list).
Since the apps are very different in nature and can be used as complements, the numbering has been done randomly, although I’ve deliberately placed some of the best at the beginning of this list.
The Best 3 Writing Apps
Prowritingaid, the best writing software, 1. grammarly.
Attribute: Best Overall Grammar Checker .
Grammarly is the go-to grammar checking app for writers, especially freelancers.
It performs rigorous checks on your text—whether it’s for typos, punctuation and spelling mistakes, or readability.
But it isn’t a basic grammar checker. Grammarly comes with multiple other editing features that help you with things like passive voice, long or complex sentences and also offers broader vocabulary, among other capabilities.
Once the checks are done, Grammarly furnishes you with writing metrics and readability scores.
That’d be enough to convince most writers.
But that’s not all… it has its own plagiarism checker that scours online and offline sources, looking for similar texts to yours.
Supported Systems : macOS, iOS, Windows, and Android.
Pricing: Grammarly offers both free and paid plans. Grammarly Premium (for individuals) starts at $11.66. You can get Grammarly Business for as low as $12.50.
2. Scrivener
Attribute: Best Book Writing Software.
Just like Grammarly owns the grammar checking terrain, Scrivener owns the book-writing software field.
Developed by writer Keith Blount (about 14 years ago), this is what a tailor-made author’s app looks like.
Scrivener is the full package as far as book writing is concerned. It has features that make it a combination of a typewriter, ring binder, and a scrapbook.
It is equipped with all the features to take your book or any other long-form writing from conception to the last full stop of your draft. It comes with features such as the corkboard, outliner, inspector, pre-set formatting, templates, file importing, metatags, automated document listing, and many other important book writing features.
Scrivener is perfect for writers in many genres; for example, it can be used by novelists, scriptwriters, academics, lawyers, translators, journalists, and students.
Supported Systems : macOS, iOS, and Windows.
Pricing: Scrivener has 4 pricing plans. Scrivener for macOS is at $49, iOS costs $19.99 , Scrivener for Windows costs $45, and the bundled plan for both macOS and Windows, which is $80.
3. ProWritingAid
Attribute: Excellent Tool for Self-editing
ProWritingAid is one of Grammarly’s best competitors in the Grammar checking category, and what you get from this tool is pretty close to Grammarly.
Plus, it is more affordable than Grammarly.
It’s an excellent proofreading and grammar checking software that improves your writing in terms of grammar, style checking, and overall quality.
ProWritingAid helps strengthen your writing by analyzing it and providing in-depth reports on areas such as ambiguous sentences, grammar, transitions, abstract words, overused words, and other important elements.
ProWritingAid also provides articles, videos, and quizzes that improve your learning curve and make writing a bit more fun and interactive.
Supported Systems : macOS and Windows.
Pricing: ProWritingAid has free and paid packages. Its monthly plan costs $20. And the yearly and lifetime plans cost $79 & $399, respectively.
4. Microsoft Word
Attribute: Best Word Processor.
For decades, Microsoft Word has been the most popular writing tool around the world. Functionality and preferences aside, it is still regarded as the best word processing software ever.
In fact, I believe that most of the word processing apps don’t just want to emulate MS Word’s features; they want to be better.
But they haven’t been successful in that endeavor, and they still lurk a mile behind Word.
It is pretty obvious that Word has evolved as a writing tool; it is no longer as simple as it was when we started using it back then. Word has added a lot of features for almost all kinds of writing projects. It also has dozens of new advanced features for integrating and configuring images and graphics, as well as a wide range of text formats, mailing capabilities, among several other practical formatting resources.
MS Word’s UI is clean and easy to use, the tool is Flexible, has great tools for collaborating, and has excellent formatting features that ensure that your document comes out on paper exactly how you designed your word on your screen.
Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS.
Pricing : If you buy Word as a separate Microsoft Office package, it’ll cost you $139.99.
But it’s also available in Microsoft 365 packages.
5. Focus Writer
Attribute: Excellent Free MS Word Alternative.
I love MS Word; It’s my first love, and I’m not the only one in love with this software.
But we know that there are apps that are trying to steal our heart, trying to end romantic attachment to Word. Out of the many free MS Word alternatives, I’d say that Focus Writer is leading the pack.
As a matter of fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s a paid tool. Just imagine, it’s available on Windows, Mac, and Android.
One of the tool’s goals is to provide distraction-free writing, so unlike MS Word, it doesn’t have an interface stuffed with all sorts of features. It has a minimalistic and clean interface that is geared towards eliminating the clutter that terrorizes writers who use word processors with rich formatting features.
But that distraction-free writing comes at a cost—the app is starved of essential editing features, and that makes a bad candidate for writing a second draft or any draft of long-form writing. I’d recommend using it only when writing the very first draft.
Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, and Linux
Pricing: Free
6. LivingWriter
Attribute: Fast Developing Tool
LivingWriter is a writing tool that’s constantly being improved. If it were an animal, I’d say that it is mutating to adapt.
On the current writing software terrain, it’s not a tool that should be “slept on.” It comes with features that are perfect for multiple genres. It can be used for both fiction and nonfiction writing projects and has features that cover story elements, general notes, goals and targets, document sharing, and stats.
Just like its competitors, LivingWriter has options for switching between light and Dark Mode. Plus, it also helps you write distraction-free by switching to the focus mode.
As I said, LivingWriter is constantly being improved by the developers, and it has moved from being only a web-based app to having iOS and Android applications. It also boasts full integration with Grammarly and Canva integration, and it’s claimed (by the Living Writer Roadmap ) that its desktop apps are about 90% complete (If you’re reading this article some months later after the publishing date, then they’re already out).
Supported Systems : Web, iOS, and Android.
Pricing : Living Writer has a yearly plan that costs $96 (billed once a year) and a monthly plan at $9.99 per month.
7. Hemingway Editor
Attribute: Best App for Impactful Writing
The Hemingway Editor—which is also called Hemingway App—is a minimalistic software that helps writers put out content that is both readable and impactful.
The Hemingway app analyzes your writing and provides reports on things like adverbs, passive voice, phrases and words with simpler alternatives, hard-to-read sentences, very-hard-to-read sentences, and other “lexical atrocities.”
For me, there hasn’t been a single check that left no flags, mainly because of adverbs. Stephen King once said that “I believe the road to hell is paved with adverbs, and I will shout it from the rooftops.”
The Hemingway app seems to have taken this to heart.
Supported Systems : macOS and Windows
Pricing: The web-based version is available for free, but the desktop apps (for Mac and Windows) cost $19.99.
Attribute: Best App for Multi-Lingual Essays
This is another excellent alternative to Grammarly.
“Sire, we have found you another worthy adversary!”
Not only is this app good for proofreading English texts, but it also excels at translating texts in Spanish, French, German, and many other supported languages.
As a grammar checker, the tool focuses on things like verbs, adverbs, confused phrases, frequently misspelled words, and so on. It also has a customizable dictionary, a text-speech feature, and a personal trainer.
Whether you’re a freelancer, a small company, an organization, or an educational institution, there’s a Ginger package for you. Ginger also offers a free plan that is pretty decent.
Ginger is available as a plugin for MS Word, MS Outlook, and Google Chrome.
Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, iOS, and Android.
Pricing : Ginger has both free and premium plans. Its monthly plan is $9.99, while the yearly and two-year plans are $74.88 and $119.76, respectively.
Attribute: Best Book Formatting Software.
As far as book formatting goes, Vellum is king. This is the go-to app for book formatting, especially for Mac users.
Vellum’s motto is “create beautiful books.”
Yep! That’s what Vellum really does; it creates beautiful eBooks and manuscripts ready for printing.
Vellum helps you turn a simple Word document into a professionally formatted eBook or book material ready for paperback or hardcover printing.
For eBooks, Vellum lets you add an already-made book cover directly to your eBook.
But it is a bit different when creating book files for printing. If you are creating a book for printing, you have to design the cover separately and add it using another tool because Vellum can only be used to create your book’s interior file, not the book cover.
Supported Systems : macOS
Pricing : Vellum offers a free plan (which doesn’t allow formatting) and two paid plans. Vellum eBooks, which is the unlimited package for creating eBooks only, costs $199.99. Vellum Press. Vellum’s package for creating both books for printing and eBooks is at $249.99.
10. Google Docs
Attribute: Top-notch Word Processor.
For basic word processors, the battle for the throne is usually between MS Word and Google Docs.
When I discovered Google Docs, I was like, “thank God I don’t have to worry about losing my unsaved work!”
The instant saving feature was and still is a huge plus for most people because accidents happen, and in a split second, you can lose work because you forgot to save.
Plus, Google Docs is an incredible collaborative tool. If you work with teams, then you can have all your work shared using Google drive and work in the same place, at the same time, even though you live in two different worlds.
And that’s not all! It’s a free tool; imagine the sugariness of that fact.
Google Docs comes with features for tracking changes and progress, commenting for revision and group working purposes, styles templates, and other word processing features.
Supported Systems : Android, iOS, macOS, Windows.
Pricing : Free
11. Final Draft
Attribute: Best app for screenwriters
If I were a screenwriter, Final Draft would be my favorite app.
The Final draft guys even go as far as claiming their app is the app of choice for big companies like BBC, Netflix, Walt Disney, SONY, ABC, and many others.
I would be lying if I said anything other than that for Final Draft, a powerful screenwriting tool.
Final Draft comes with over 100 templates for TV, film, and playwriting, which are very useful when you want to format your script in line with industry standards.
Expectedly, Final Draft comes with index cards. It also has character features and stats for tracking your progress.
Pricing : Final Draft offers a handsome 60-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. For existing subscribers who have older versions than Final Draft 11, upgrading costs only $79.99, and for new customers, the app costs $249.99 (currently at $199.99 due to a massive discount).
12. Ulysses
Attribute: Best Writing Software for Apple Products
Ulysses is a path-breaking tool for writing apps. In fact, Scrivener was modeled after Ulysses when it was developed back then.
It has sufficient features for word processing that can help write incredible essays and large academic assignments. It comes with a Markup-Based Text Editor, a library for organizing notes and documents, features for setting writing goals, publishing capabilities, and many others.
Ulysses is a good word processing app, but to be honest, I’m not a huge fan. Not because of its features and lack thereof, but because it’s just available on macOS.
Supported Systems : macOS, iPadOS, and iOS.
Pricing : Ulysses offers a variety of pricing options for different regions of the world. The US plan costs $5.99 per month and $49.99 per year. Then there are plans for other regions (Europe, China, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia), which are priced using the local currencies’ USD equivalent of the US plan.
13. The Novel Factory
Attribute: Excellent App for Novelists
There’s no shortcut to writing a good novel. Novel writing software is designed to help you write faster and tidier, but it does take you through all the necessary stages.
This is a fabulous app with a lot of practical features for almost every step in your novel building process.
The Novel Factory takes your novel from the creation of a premise, plotting, creating characters, up to the last word in the story plot’s resolution.
With the Novel Factory, you can create the synopsis, create scenes that fulfill the intended narrative, sketch your characters, create the story’s settings, plot your story, et cetera.
You can write anywhere; using the web version of The Novel Factory, you can write on any internet-enabled device, from anywhere, whether it’s your favorite café, the train station, in your van, park, etc.
Supported Systems : Windows
Pricing : The Novel Factory is a paid tool but it offers a 30-day free trial. Its basic plan costs $7.50/month and is billed $75 annually. The standard package is at $20/month and is billed $198 annually.
14. Write Or Die
Attribute: Best for Productivity Purposes.
I always say that, for me, the name of this app encapsulates my life.
It’s either I write or die!
When you set goals in Write Or Die, you receive incentives, stimuli, or penalties depending on your performance. If you’re a sloth like me, you really need this.
It gives you the extra push since the penalties—which include erasing current texts—are designed to help you pick up speed and increase productivity. At times, those punishments can trigger the Usain Bolt in your fingers and make you go into overdrive.
Supported Systems : macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Pricing : Write or Die has free and paid plans. It costs $10 for macOS and Windows and $1 for iOS.
15. IA Writer
Attribute: Simplest Writing App
IA Writer is a distraction-free writing tool that’s ideal for short essays.
It has a very simple user interface that only uses plain text. To help you eliminate distractions, IA writer has a full-screen mode that fades out everything but the line you are typing.
Supported Systems : This IA Writer app is available on Windows, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
Pricing : IA Writer is a Paid tool (apps for each supported system are purchased separately.), and there are free trials for some plans.
The desktop app for macOS costs $29.99 (has a 14-day trial), apps for iOS & iPadOS are at $29.99 (there is no free trial offered), the Android app costs $4.99 /year or $29.99 one-time payment with a 30-day trial, and the Windows desktop app is at $29.99 & comes with a 14-day trial.
16. Write! App
Attribute: Distraction-Free Word Processor
Write! App is another minimalistic word processing app that is sleek and practical at the same time.
It’s an app tailor-made for distraction-free writing.
There’s no denying that Write! has a good-looking UI and works well, but it’s the distraction-free writing features that convinced me to add it to this list.
And it comes with other features that help in formatting your document, spell checking, Autocomplete, publishing, syncing, and other important tasks.
Plus, it won’t cost you an arm.
Pricing : Write! has simple pricing plans. Apart from the cloud access fee, there’s just one plan. Write! App only offers a lifetime plan which involves a one-time payment of $24.95. For students, Write! offers a discounted price of $9.95 for students. Then there’s that optional fee for cloud access which is $4.95/year after the first year of purchase.
17. Freedom
Attribute: An Incredible Tool for Focused Writing
Freedom wants the best for you as a writer. So Freedom, on your behalf, blocks distracting sites and applications to let you focus on the most important thing—writing.
This means that you’re done—temporarily—with detours from apps, websites, and social media.
If you’re like me, you really need this app. Don’t you hate it when a 2-minute scroll on Twitter turns into 2 hours of surfing the internet?
If you’re worried about how such distractions affect your focus and productivity, then you have to start using Freedom.
It’s not an expensive tool; in fact, the “cost of freedom” has never been lower, literally.
Supported Systems : Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, ChromeOS.
Pricing : Freedom costs $6.99 per month, $29 per year, and also offers a $129-lifetime plan which can get as low as $64.50 when discounts are offered.
18. Manuscripts
Best App for Academic Assignments
Manuscript is a tool that is perfect for students and academics.
And the good thing is that it works with popular word processing apps, including Microsoft Word.
Whether it’s an essay, lab report, dissertation, or a literature review, Manuscript will take you from the planning stage to the last page.
One of the reasons why Manuscript is an excellent tool for academic writing is its citation features. The tool allows you to import your reference library from reference management software such as Zotero and Mendeley. You can also cite directly with popular reference management systems, including Bookends and F1000Workspace.
It also has essential writing features like the outliner, the inspectors, focus mode, and you also have an option of switching to a full-screen mode.
Even with all these capabilities, Manuscript has a simple UI and is very easy to use.
19. Storyist
Attribute Affordable screenwriting software for macOS.
Writing is a vast theater. We have novelists, academic writers, journos, bloggers, and many other kinds.
As the name suggests, storyist is an app tailor-made for storytellers; it has features for creating, organizing, and tracking your plot, characters, and settings.
Storyist allows you to set comments, insert images, create headers and footers, and style sheets. If you’re not really good at formatting manuscripts and screenplays, Storyist comes with manuscript and screenplay templates to help you write using a proper format.
Your story can be sketched using index cards that are attached to your manuscript and can be displayed as you write. Storyist recognize that story writing is a flexible process, so it lets you customize and refine your story’s plot, character, and setting sheets.
Storyist is pretty basic and affordable, so it’s a perfect tool for newbie screenwriters.
Supported Systems: macOS and iOS.
Price: Storyist is a paid tool but offers a 15-day free trial. Its license costs $59.99.
20. Day One
Attribute: Excellent Journaling Software
Journaling is an important element of a writer’s life. Writing down random ideas is a proven way of increasing creativity and beating writer’s block .
With the Day One writing app, you write short story ideas, blog post titles, or record your day-to-day writing activities.
You can add photos, audio clips, drawings, or videos to your journal to capture memories and make your journal beautiful.
The tool also lets you sync your journal entries so that you can easily access them across all of your devices.
If you’re not sold on journaling because notebook journals aren’t your cup of tea, this app will change your perception.
Supported Systems : macOS and iOS.
Pricing : Day one offers a free plan and a paid plan that costs $2.92 per month.
21. yWriter
Attribute: For Authors Who Like Crafting their Novel Scene by Scene
yWriter used to be an exclusive Windows book writing app, but they have made it available on almost all the major platforms—Windows, Android, iOS, and macOS (which is still a beta version).
yWriter is similar to Scrivener and I remember back then, some people said it was “a Scrivener for Windows.” But unlike Scrivener, yWriter focuses on chapters and separates them as if they were different books.
In those chapters, you can then set up scenes. So, each chapter is treated as an independent section, and the scenes can be sorted separately in different windows.
Once you hit a dead end, you can mark the scene as unused and it won’t be included in the final word count.
yWriter has features for adding scenes, characters, locations, etc.
The app also helps you track your progress by displaying word counts (per file and the total) and keeping everyday log files.
Supported Systems : Windows, Android, iOS, & macOS.
Price: Free
22. Bibisco
Attribute: Excellent Tool for Planning a Novel.
I think of a novelist as an architect who also has to handle everything else after designing his building.
They have to design and build the whole novel—create a novel structure, come up with and explain the premise, create and define the and settings, set up the narrative, design characters, determine and add images & objects essential for the story, write & organize chapters and scenes, et cetera.
Bibisco handles all these tasks.
Bibisco lets you export your word using pdf, Docx, epub file type. Plus, Bibisco is a multilingual app; it supports a lot of languages including Czech, French, German, English, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish.
Supported Systems : Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Pricing : Bibisco is an open-source software program. You pay what you think is the right price.
Deciding on a Writing Software
Free writing software vs paid software.
It is wrong to generalize that all paid writing software tools are better than their free counterparts.
In some cases, though, that assertion does hold. Some tools are paid software for good reason—they come with incredible features and offer great customer service.
And… Some free services come with ads (which can be a source of annoyance and distractions) that are a source of revenue for the developers.
All in all, it’s good to give a writing app a try before making any decision. The price tag alone isn’t sufficient for determining good writing software.
Things to Consider When Choosing Writing Software
1. supported systems.
I find it unnecessary for apps to restrict themselves to a single OS. Unless you tell me that Apple or Microsoft are paying you, it doesn’t make sense to me.
In fact, it feels like some childish ego.
A good writing tool needs to support major operating systems, at least both macOS and Windows. Having desktop apps for these systems is a convenience on its own. But the tool can also have apps for mobile systems (Android, iPadOS & iOS).
2. Usefulness and Ease of Use
Nobody purchases writing software to make their lives harder. NO!
A tool with lots of features does make writing a bit easier. But if those features are more intricate than what they’re supposed to be, then you’re better off without that writing app.
Good writing software is tailor-made for writers and, preferably, made by or with the help of writers. Such software has little to no whistles and bells and is very intuitive.
3. Distraction-Free Writing
When a writer gets their act together and starts writing, there must be no distractions.
Detours that arise from other apps and activities are bad enough, nobody needs more distractions from a writing app. In this regard, a writing tool needs to be tidy and free of unnecessary widgets that can only delay the writing process.
Besides that, good writing software programs also come with focus modes and full-screen writing which help get rid of additional widgets and inessential features.
4. Specificity
Diversity and versatility is a good thing for a writing tool to have. A writing app with so many capabilities makes it easier and cheaper for a writer to handle different projects.
However, good software needs to have some particularity. It needs to be a perfect tool for a specific project or type of writing.
For example, scrivener doesn’t strive to be the jack of all trades. Instead, it tried and has successfully become the best book writing software. This means that authors know that they won’t get any grammar checks, but it will efficiently handle the creative and organizing elements of their book writing process.
5. Cost of Software
Sometimes, fussing over the price tag isn’t necessary. If the tool can give value for money, then you just have to close your eyes and authorize that payment.
But in some rare instances, high cost doesn’t always reflect the quality of the writing software. Take Google Docs for example, it’s free but better than a couple of paid tools.
If there’s a paid tool that someone recommended to you or you find on your own, always look for trial periods and free versions. Use them to test the tool and if you’re convinced that the price tag doesn’t match the quality, DUMP IT.
What Writing App Do Professional Writers Use?
MS Word and Scrivener are the most popular apps among famous authors. Best-selling authors like J.K Rowling, Steven Kotler, and Stephen King have used or still use MS word.
Todd Henry, Jeff Goins, and Sabba Tahir have all used or still use Scrivener. Todd Henry and Sabba Tahir use Scrivener for drafting but use Word to write.
Final Draft is the most famous screenwriting software that I know. Ben Stiller, James Cameron, Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis are just a few of the many famous names in Hollywood that use Final Draft to write scripts.
What Is the Best Writing App for Longer-Form Works?
Scrivener, without a doubt. Scrivener is perfect for long-form works. It helps you put all your researched content, references, notes, and your unique content in one place.
For Novelists, plotting, adding notes, creating characters, fleshing the story, and revisions can all be done inside Scrivener.
Final Words On the Best Writing Software
As I said at the beginning of this read, you have to put effort into finding the best writing software. Don’t just listen to what other people or bloggers are saying.
The writing app has to be tailored for your needs; otherwise, you’ll end up with a white elephant.
Obviously, there are apps other than – Grammarly and Scrivener that are actually good. Go out there and find your writing app!

17+ Writing Apps to Brainstorm, Draft, Edit, and Publish Your Work
C.I.G. is supported in part by its readers. If you buy through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission. Read more here.
For most of human history, writing tools were pretty basic. While there were important advances in technology such as the invention of paper, the printing press, and later the typewriter, it was all just physical marks on a physical medium at the end of the day.
Word processing software was a huge leap forward, forever changing the process of drafting and archiving. The core technology of word processing has remained more or less the same even into the 21st century, but we have seen major advances in the organizational and brainstorming tools available to writers.
The result is our current landscape, in which hundreds (if not thousands) of writing apps compete for your attention, all claiming to revolutionize the way you write.
Which apps are worth your time? This article will help you decide, exploring a variety of writing apps to improve the way you brainstorm, draft, edit, and publish your work.
Whether you’re a student, knowledge worker, or professional writer, you’ll find something useful below.
Overview: A digital mind-mapping tool that’s great for brainstorming.
Mind-mapping is a powerful tool for brainstorming writing and drawing connections between ideas. Traditionally, the technique involves drawing shapes on paper and connecting those shapes with branching lines.
These days, however, you aren’t confined to making paper mind maps. Coggle lets you create digital mind maps that are saved to the cloud and accessible across devices. And unlike on paper, you can edit and rearrange the mind maps as much as you want without worrying about running out of space.
If you’re struggling to come up with writing ideas, then Coggle could be the creative boost you need.
Price: A free version is available with up to 3 private mind maps (and unlimited public ones). The paid version starts at $5 / month and includes unlimited private mind maps, extra shapes, and additional formatting options.
Platforms: Web
Overview: A long-standing writing and note-taking tool that’s still valuable today.
Evernote was the first note-taking and personal knowledge management app I ever used. I recall how mind-blowing it was at the time to create a searchable archive of notes, articles, PDFs, and whatever else I found interesting.
Since then, Evernote has exploded in popularity. While many other apps have emerged that claim to replace or surpass it, it remains a powerful tool for writers.
You can use it to take notes, write outlines, or even produce full drafts of essays or articles. You can also use Evernote’s Web Clipper to quickly save articles and other web pages to read later or access offline.
If you’re looking to create a “digital notebook” to hold your ideas and fuel your creativity, Evernote is an excellent choice.
Price: Most features are free. Evernote Premium is $7.99 / month and includes additional features for searching, sharing, and organizing your notes. Students can get 50% off their first year of Evernote Premium .
Platforms: Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Web
Looking for more tools to take notes? Check out our guide to the best note-taking apps .
Google Docs
Overview: The original collaborative, cloud-based writing app remains an invaluable part of many writers’ workflows.
Google Docs needs no introduction. When it was released, its collaborative, real-time writing and editing features were revolutionary. Now, such features are commonplace (even expected) in most cloud-based writing and note-taking tools.
Despite this, I’ve continued to use Google Docs for all of my professional writing, and it’s still the tool I recommend for everyday writing work.
The interface is clean, it automatically saves your work to the cloud, and the backing of Google means it’s unlikely to disappear (something you can’t say about the latest and greatest writing apps).
If you want a writing tool that just works, Google Docs is the app to use.
Price: Free
Platforms: Android, iOS, Web
Cold Turkey Writer
Overview: If you’re procrastinating on a writing project, Cold Turkey Writer will force you to focus.
Your computer is a powerful tool for writing, but it also includes lots of potential distractions such as social media, video games, Netflix, and Wikipedia rabbit holes. Cold Turkey Writer eliminates these distractions.
When you launch the app, you tell it your writing goal. This goal can be either a number of words or an amount of time spent writing. After you’ve done that, Cold Turkey will block every app on your computer (internet included) until you’ve met your writing goal.
This might seem extreme, but that’s why it’s so effective. When you remove other options, you’ll be amazed how much writing you produce.
Note that while Cold Turkey Writer is an excellent tool for producing distraction-free drafts, it doesn’t include many formatting options. So you’ll need to use it in conjunction with an app like Google Docs or Microsoft Word if you plan to print or publish your writing.
Price: Most features are free. A one-time payment of $9 (CAD) will get you additional formatting and theming features.
Platforms: Mac, Windows
Overview: A popular tool for long-form writing projects such as novels, screenplays, and dissertations.
Long-form writing presents unique challenges compared to writing essays, blog posts, or other short pieces. One of the main challenges is organization. How do you keep track of what you’ve written? And how do you arrange your writing into a cohesive whole?
Scrivener aims to solve these problems. It includes all the standard word processing features you’d find in an app like Word or Docs, but it also includes features for organizing, navigating, and editing your writing projects.
You can quickly see all your project’s chapters, sections, or scenes at a glance. And you can quickly rearrange these items to help you put together your final manuscript.
Other handy features include:
- A virtual “corkboard” to help you plan your writing structure
- The ability to split documents into smaller chapters or sections
- Tools for displaying reference material such as images, PDFs, or web pages (without having to leave the Scrivener app).
- Options for exporting your work as a PDF, Word Doc, or even a Kindle ebook.
Price: One-time purchase of $49 for a single desktop license (Mac or Windows). Students and academics can receive a discounted license for $41.65. The iOS app requires a separate purchase of $19.99. A 30-day free trial is also available.
Platforms: Mac, Windows, iOS
Overview: Aimed at novel writers, Novlr includes extensive tools to organize and track your long-form writing projects.
At first glance, Novlr seems similar to Scrivener. And while the two apps do share a lot of features in common, Novlr is different enough that it’s also worth considering.
To start, there’s the Novlr interface. Compared to Scrivener, it’s much more minimalist. However, don’t mistake this minimalism for a lack of features and power.
Novlr lets you see an overview of your writing sections and chapters as you work, and it constantly saves your writing (much like Google Docs). There’s also a “Focus Mode” that hides the interface so you can concentrate on the current chapter or section.
Most of the above features are available in Scrivener. Where Novlr really stands out is in its style and grammar checking features.
As you write, Novlr will show you suggestions for fixing grammar, spelling, and even making your writing more concise. And unlike a lot of writing apps that only mark errors or suggest corrections, Novlr includes explanations for each of its suggestions. This way, you can learn to be a better writer as you use the app.
Overall, I think Novlr is a better tool if you’re focused on novel or fiction writing, while Scrivener is better if you plan to write nonfiction. Scrivener’s tools for organization and research material are superior to Novlr’s, while Novlr is hyper-focused on being the best tool for novelists (and no one else).
Ultimately, both apps have free trials, so I encourage you to test out each and see which is better for your long-form writing needs.
Price: $100 per year or $10 month-to-month. A 2-week free trial is also available.
Platforms: Web (also works offline and on mobile devices)
Overview: A simple Markdown writing app.
Byword is a Markdown text editor that aims to help you write faster. If you’re not familiar with Markdown, here’s a good explanation . Basically, it’s a way to write plain text that you can then quickly convert into HTML (saving you the hassle of manually writing HTML).
If that last paragraph made your eyes glaze over, don’t worry; there are plenty of other apps in this article for your needs. But if you regularly write for the web, learning Markdown (and using a Markdown editor such as Byword) can save you a lot of time.
Byword lets you write documents in Markdown and then export them as HTML, Rich Text, or a PDF. You can also export your writing directly to a publishing platform such as WordPress, Medium, Blogger, or Tumblr. If you already use Markdown (or want to learn it), then Byword is a tool you should look into.
Price: One-time purchase of $10.99 (Mac app) or $5.99 (iPhone and iPad app)
Platforms: Mac, iOS
Written? Kitten!
Overview: Get some extra writing motivation with pictures of kittens, puppies, or bunnies.
Writing the first draft is always the hardest part. If you need some motivation to get those words onto the page, then check out Written? Kitten!
This web app shows you a picture of a cute animal of your choice (kitten, puppy, or bunny) every time you write a certain number of words.
It’s a great tool if you need to write an essay of a certain length or if you have a goal to write a set number of words each day.
Overview: A private, online journal that helps you build a daily writing habit.
“Write every day” is a common New Year’s Resolution, but it can be tricky to stick to. If you’re looking for an app to help motivate you, check out 750 Words .
As the name implies, 750 Words is an app that helps you build a habit of writing at least 750 words (about 3 pages) per day. When you log in to the app, you’ll see nothing but a place to write. As you type, the app keeps track of your progress and lets you know when you’ve passed 750 words. The app also saves your work so you can review it later, and everything is completely private.
In addition to the writing features, 750 Words shows you insights about your writing such as how many days in a row you’ve written, your average words per minute, and the mood you were in (based on the words you use).
Whether you’re looking to write as a creative exercise, to learn more about yourself, or because some stranger on the internet like me told you to, 750 Words is a great way to get your thoughts onto the page.
Price: Free for 30 days, then $5 / month.
Overview: Daily Page sends you a new writing prompt each day and gives you a distraction-free space to write.
Don’t know what to write about? Daily Page provides a solution.
Each day, the app emails you a different creative writing prompt. Just click the link in the email, sign in to the app, and write your entry. If you prefer free writing, the app gives you the option to do that as well.
In addition to the writing prompts and motivation, a subscription to Daily Page also gives you access to several writing courses on topics such as screenwriting, blogging, and storytelling. While I can’t vouch for the quality of the courses, it’s an interesting feature that you don’t see in a lot of other writing apps.
Price: $4.99 month-to-month or $47.88 / year.
Overview: An app that checks (and automatically corrects) your grammar, spelling, and more.
The school system generally does a terrible job of teaching grammar. Combine that with the fact that English spelling is an illogical disaster, and it’s no wonder that we all struggle with writing “mechanics” to one degree or another.
The grammar and spell check tools in your word processor can help, but they still miss a lot of mistakes. This is where Grammarly comes in.
Grammarly checks your writing for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and usage. When it finds a mistake, it will highlight it and explain what’s wrong. You can then choose to accept the correction or ignore it.
To get the most out of Grammarly, I recommend installing the browser extension . With this, Grammarly will automatically check your writing everywhere from your email to Google Docs to online forms. Prefer to write offline? Grammarly also has standalone apps that you can paste your writing into, as well as extensions for Microsoft Word.
Even as a professional writer and editor with a degree in English, I use Grammarly every day. It speeds up the editing process and finds mistakes that spell check tends to miss. While its suggestions aren’t correct 100% of the time, it’s still a valuable tool for any kind of writing (except maybe poetry).
Price: All the features I described above are free. You can upgrade to Premium for $29.95 / month to get additional features such as vocabulary suggestions, plagiarism checks, and readability suggestions.
Platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Web. Browser extensions are available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. A Microsoft Word extension is also available.
Overview: An app that helps you make your writing easier to read.
When you’re writing a draft, the thoughts often come out of your head in a jumble. During the editing process, it’s your job to make this jumble understandable. To help you out, I recommend the Hemingway app .
Hemingway’s goal is to remove anything unnecessary from your writing. This could be complex sentences, passive voice, adverbs, or big words. While none of these are “wrong” to use, removing them often makes your writing easier to read.
Whenever Hemingway encounters something it thinks you should remove, it will highlight it. Next to each highlight, you’ll see a suggestion for improvement. This could be anything from using a simpler word to shortening a lengthy sentence.
In addition to stylistic suggestions, Hemingway also displays some useful statistics about your writing, including readability, word count, and estimated reading time.
If you purchase the desktop version of Hemingway, you’ll get additional features such as the ability to publish directly to WordPress or Medium and the option to export your writing as HTML, Markdown, Word Doc, or PDF.
For maximum editing power, combine Hemingway with Grammarly.
Price: Web version is free. Desktop versions (Mac and Windows) are each $19.99.
Platforms: Mac, Windows, Web
Overview: Blurt helps you build a daily writing habit while removing distractions and teaching you to be a better writer.
Do you love the writing experience of Medium, but are looking for some additional tools to help you focus? Then Blurt could be the app you’re looking for.
To start, Blurt asks you to define the project you’re working on. Options include a journal, blog post, book, newsletter, or essays. After you’ve defined your project, Blurt prompts you to set a daily writing goal for it. You can even specify the time of day you want to write, and Blurt will send you an email reminder to do it.
Once you’ve set your goals, it’s time to write. The Blurt editor is very minimal, with most formatting options hidden by default. As you write, Blurt offers spelling and readability suggestions. The readability suggestions are similar to those in Hemingway, including adverbs, difficult to read sentences, and even cliches.
If you find yourself getting distracted while writing, Blurt lets you launch a “Writing Session.” This session will challenge you to write for a set amount of time or to write a certain number of words. And if you struggle with self-editing, Blurt can blur your words as you type. This helps keep drafting and editing separate.
Finally, Blurt gives you the option to export your work to Medium, Twitter, Facebook, or Markdown (and it also supports Markdown syntax while writing).
Price: 15-day free trial, then $14.99 / month.
Overview: A free, web-based plagiarism checker.
Plagiarism is a serious offense both in school and the professional world. Not only is it wrong, but it could damage your grade (or even get you expelled or fired in extreme cases).
Luckily, plagiarism is easy to avoid if you properly cite your sources and use a plagiarism checking tool like Quetext . Quetext uses advanced natural language processing to compare your writing to billions of documents across the internet. If the app detects any potential plagiarism, it will highlight it in your document.
Even if you don’t think your document contains plagiarism, it can’t hurt to check (particularly when there’s an app to make it so easy).
Price: The Free plan includes 5 plagiarism checks per month (enough for most students). For unlimited plagiarism checks, citation suggestions, and priority support, you can upgrade to the Pro plan for $9.99 / month.
Platforms: Web
Coffitivity
Overview: Recreate the sounds of a coffee shop in the comfort of your home.
If you enjoy writing in coffee shops, then you should give Coffitivity a look. The app recreates the sounds of a coffee shop within your web browser. This allows you to feel like you’re in a coffee shop (and potentially focus better) without leaving your house.
In a time when many coffee shops are closed to the public, this is an especially valuable service. I like to mix the app’s sounds with instrumental music to create a more immersive experience, but that’s up to you.
And, of course, you’ll need to provide your own coffee.
Price: Free. For $9 / year you can get access to additional coffee shop sounds.
Overview: An app that uses specially-designed music to help you focus.
Listening to music is a common way to focus on all kinds of projects, writing and otherwise. However, listening to music while writing can be distracting, particularly if the music contains lyrics or interesting melodies.
Brain.fm solves this problem. The app uses a variety of compositional and sound design techniques ( backed by science ) to create music specifically for focusing.
When you sign in to the app, you tell it what your goal is: focus, relax, or sleep. Once you select your goal (which would typically be “Focus” for writing), you tell the app how long you want to focus. Brain.fm will then start playing music designed to help your brain enter a flow state .
I find Brain.fm to be especially helpful if I’m procrastinating or struggling to finish a difficult project. I recommend combining it with the Pomodoro technique for the ultimate focused writing experience.
Price: $6.99 / month or $49.99 / year. A free, 3-day trial is also available.
For more music to help you focus, listen to our study playlist .
Overview: A free tool for organizing academic sources and generating citations.
When you’re writing a thesis, dissertation, or research paper , it can be tricky to keep track of your sources. You could keep a list of them in a text document, but that relies on you remembering to update it. And when it’s time to cite your sources, it could take hours to assemble that list into a properly formatted bibliography.
To make it easier to manage your research, use Zotero . Zotero is an open-source app for collecting, organizing, and citing sources of all kinds.
Once you’ve installed the Zotero browser extension , you can quickly pull citation information from library pages, JSTOR, online journals, and just about any other digital source you can think of. The result is a database of sources that you can quickly search and reference.
And when it’s time to submit your final draft, Zotero can generate a bibliography or references section in the citation format of your choice (APA, Chicago, MLA, and thousands more ). The app also includes tools for collaborating on papers with other researchers, and you have the option to store all your Zotero data in the cloud.
Platforms: Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Safari
Honorable Mentions
Below, you’ll find a few other apps that I use regularly in my writing work. I didn’t give these their own sections because they’re either too specific to my work or have a waitlist. But I still think they’re super useful and worth a look:
- Capitalize My Title – A web app that converts your titles to the proper “title case.” I use it to check the title and subheadings of my articles, but you can also use it to properly capitalize the titles of essays or research papers.
- Roam Research – The app I use to take notes, journal, and record article ideas. While extremely powerful, I didn’t give Roam its own section because there’s currently a waiting list to access the app. You can learn more about Roam in our full review .
- Docs to Markdown – This Google Docs add-on lets you export your work as HTML or Markdown. I use it when I’m transferring an article from Google Docs to WordPress. But it could also be a useful tool for copywriters or web designers.
Your Brain Is the Ultimate Writing App
I hope this article has helped you find an app to make your writing process more efficient, pleasant, or focused.
Ultimately, writing apps are just there to enable you as a writer. To get better at writing, you need to practice it, get feedback, learn, and repeat.

I Tested Three AI Essay-writing Tools, and Here’s What I Found
Writing essays can be draining, tedious, and difficult, even for me—and I write all day long for a living. If writing isn’t your special skill, it’s even harder, which is why there are so many sites and products out there that are designed to help you get your homework done. Some of them are pretty unethical, and I’m not going to recommend hiring someone else to write your papers for you, but there are some cool AI tools that can give you a hand that are worth considering. (The essay-writing businesspeople are probably using these, too, so you’re better off eliminating the middleman and using them on your own.)
The best AI essay-helper tools
I have an essay due next week on the history and impact of a federal law, 21 U.S.C. S856, which outlaws the operation of any building where drugs are made or used. I won’t lie: I’m excited to work on it this weekend, but that’s just me. I tested out a few of the more popular AI essay-helper tools, pretending I wasn’t excited about it, to see how they worked. Here’s my assessment.
First up was Grammarly , which prompted me to fill out a personalization quiz before I could use it. I told the site I was a grad student, interested in improving the vocabulary I use in my work, and looking to brainstorm topics for my essay. I used the text-input section to type a quick introductory paragraph and selected “Generative AI” from the list of options. When I hit the “Improve It” button, Grammarly showed me a revised version that added a bunch of words, but still said the same thing as my more concise entry. To me, that’s annoying, but if you’re trying to hit a word count, this could be useful. I was also given options like “Make it assertive,” “Make it persuasive,” and “Make it confident.” When I selected “Make it more detailed,” the generative AI did expand the information pretty significantly, but it didn’t add any citations and I’m not convinced it drew on material outside of what I inputted. When I hit “Make it persuasive,” the AI automatically assumed the bias should fall in favor of the law, but when I added more detail to my original paragraph, suggesting for argument’s sake that the law has curtailed efforts to reduce drug overdoses throughout the country, the AI assistant said, “Grammarly assistance is unavailable for this prompt because it may result in sensitive content.”
Overall, this wasn’t great for my needs, as my topic's content was too “sensitive” and the generative AI really only added a bunch of words. This one would be most useful for someone trying to hit a word count.
Next I tested Cramly , which I hadn’t heard of before. Before upgrading to a $4/month plan, you do get to try five free prompts, so I pasted my basic intro paragraph in there and, after a few seconds, got five paragraphs in return. It was obvious the AI was pulling from external sources somehow, as it mentioned fines and prison sentences associated with the law that I hadn’t specified, but it didn’t actually cite those sources. Still, the information it provided was helpful, so this one would be great if you’re not sure how to frame or expand on a topic and need a general idea of what your essay could look like. You’ll just have to go through everything it spits back at you and look it up independently, finding solid sourcing.
EssayGenius
EssayGenius is extremely easy to use. It asked me to type what I’m writing about into a box. I simply inputted the name of the law and, about 10 seconds later, got 10 paragraphs back, some with subheadings like “historical background” and “implications in criminal law and public policy.” Again, there were no citations here, but the service provided not only a lot of details that could be used as a springboard to find more, but a solid outline for what the paper could look like. The AI played both sides, objectively presenting the cases for and against the law, then provided a conclusion that made it easy to narrow down where to go with the topic. Impressively, I was able to generate all that for free, but if you want to write up to 10 essays per month, it’ll cost you $9.99 a month.
Finally, I tried out JotBot , which I have seen advertised on social media. It asked me what I was writing about, plus if I wanted an outline, but also gave me an opportunity to upload my old essays so it could replicate my writing style. As scary as it was, the paragraphs it generated after reading some of my older work did sound more like me than standard AI does. It give me subtopic suggestions, like “impact,” “historical background,” and “controversies,” which I could select from a sidebar and, if I liked the paragraph it wrote, drag into the essay itself. From there, I could accept or reject sentences one by one as it generated new ones. I could write in the essay editing section, too, and it generated more suggestions based on what I was typing. Frankly, this one was really cool and I can see how it would help beat writer’s block with ease, since you can type and get suggestions as you go. There was a learning curve, though, and I didn’t realize how quickly I was blowing through my 10 free daily “credits,” since it’s unclear what, exactly, costs credits and how many it costs to, say, accept one suggestion. You can unlock unlimited credits, unlimited autocomplete, unlimited sources, and more for $14 per month.
Conclusions
Overall, EssayGenius and JotBot were the best AI tools I tested. I was impressed by EssayGenius’s ability to research the topic on its own and JotBot’s mimicry of my own writing style. They do cost money, but that might be worth it if you’re someone who struggles with idea generation, outline creation, or getting into the flow of writing overall.
Bear in mind these are not meant to churn out entire essays for you and you shouldn’t use them to do that. I don’t mean because it’s unethical, but I mean because it’s pretty easy for professors to catch you doing it . Even if you do use an AI tool to generate a whole paragraph or more, try to write it in your own voice and think of it more as a way to study and learn about your topic than have the writing done for you.
Or, pay nothing and just use ChatGPT to generate outline ideas. I do that all the time and never have to worry about getting in trouble, cheating myself out of an education, or paying for anything. I just asked ChatGPT to generate an outline for an essay on 21 U.S.C. §856 and its impact on American harm reduction efforts and got eight sections, each with three subsections, and an easy roadmap I could follow to write my paper on my own. Doing it this way ensures I’ll actually research and learn about the topic, which is important to me, but also avoid the risk of going down for plagiarism or cheating, which is probably important to you.
No matter what you end up doing, always run your work through a plagiarism checker (like Grammarly’s , which is better than its AI essay-writing tools) and ZeroGPT to make sure you’re not turning in something that’s going to get you in trouble.

Writing the Personal Statement for the Common Application
Today, the Common Application opens for the 2024–25 application cycle. As the platform opens, officially signaling the start of the college admissions season, many students are starting the daunting process of crafting their personal statements. The personal statement is a crucial opportunity to showcase individuality, character, and intellectual depth. In only 650 words, students should seek to encapsulate their authentic voice and perspective through a compelling and creative narrative. The process requires thorough brainstorming, strategy, and editing in order to produce an essay that is distinct from those of thousands of other applicants vying for seats at top colleges.
As students choose a prompt and begin brainstorming essays, here are the key points to consider in order to create a stellar essay for each prompt:
1. The Meaningful Background Prompt
Prompt: Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
This prompt invites you to share an aspect of your identity or experience that is central to who you are. Start by thoughtfully considering aspects of your identity that are unique to you; then, try to think of a specific anecdote or experience that provides a portrait of those qualities. While detail and specificity are critical for all engaging essays, they are particularly important in this one, as you should show (rather than tell ) admissions committees the things that are quintessential to who you are.
Your essay should also have a takeaway—aside from just telling admissions officers what the background, identity, interest, or talent is, you should also focus on what you’ve learned from this piece of your identity, how it has developed over time, and how you will apply it in college and beyond.
Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024
Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, 2. the overcoming obstacles prompt.
Prompt: The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
This prompt is an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and the capacity to learn from adversity—qualities that elite universities value highly. Begin by choosing a specific incident where you faced a significant challenge or failure—this could be an academic setback, a personal loss, or a time when you were out of your comfort zone. Students often fall into one of two common mistakes when tackling this question. First, many students rely on cliches and overused tropes. Keep in mind that admissions officers will likely read hundreds of essays recounting stories of students missing the game-winning goal or flunking a test in sophomore English. Try to select a story that only you can tell, and if you choose a topic you worry might be popular among other students, consider how you might recount it in a unique and unexpected way. On the other hand, some students fall into the opposite problem, sharing about a particularly personal, traumatic, or triggering experience that impacted them. Though it should convey personal insights, the personal statement is still a professional document, and you should not make your reader uncomfortable or unsettled by the information you share.
Finally, note that admissions officers are not primarily interested in the challenge itself, but in how you responded to the challenge. Focus on the steps you took to overcome the obstacle, what you learned about yourself in the process, and how this experience has shaped your future actions and mindset. Highlight any new skills, perspectives, or motivations that emerged from this experience, demonstrating your ability to grow and adapt in the face of adversity.
3. The Changed Perspective Prompt
Prompt: Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
Top colleges seek to admit students who are willing to engage in critical thinking and who possess the intellectual courage to question norms or ideas. For this essay, consider beginning with an anecdote—starting the essay in media res can be an engaging way to catch the reader’s attention and quickly establish the stakes of your narrative. As you share your story, remember that the essay’s focus is to demonstrate your open-mindedness, your commitment to seeking the truth, and your willingness to engage deeply with complex issues. It also shows your ability to respect differing viewpoints while developing your own reasoned stance. As such, you should take the admissions committee through your process of growth and change step-by-step, clearly articulating how the experience impacted you and how your changed perspective will enhance their campus community should you enroll.
4. The Gratitude Prompt
Prompt: Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
Like the two prior prompts, this prompt requires students to share a particular anecdote, and students should consider beginning with their narrative before zooming out to explore the broader theme of gratitude. Start by recounting a specific instance where someone did something for you that made you feel unexpectedly grateful. This could be a small act of kindness, a significant gesture, or a moment of support that made a lasting impression on you. Then, explore how this experience of gratitude has affected your actions or attitude. As you do so, be sure to avoid platitudes or vapid buzzwords—rather than expressing that the experience made you feel “good” or “appreciated” or the equivalent, share how it has affected your perspective or actions going forward. The best responses are those that illustrate actionable change rather than fuzzy feelings.
5. The Personal Growth Prompt
Prompt: Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
A student’s college years are all about growth and transformation, and this prompt invites students to demonstrate their capacity for self-reflection and teachability. Thus, while this prompt might invite you to describe a major event or accomplishment, what you really want to show is a transformative period and the resulting reflection. Don’t feel as though the accomplishment, event, or realization needs to be especially earth-shattering or ground-breaking—sometimes the small things can make an impression in a big way. Finally, if you do choose to write about an accomplishment, be sure that you are not bragging. The prompt is an opportunity to show self-awareness, rather than to tout your achievements.
6. The Captivating Concept Prompt
Prompt: Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
Intellectual curiosity and authentic passion are distinguishing characteristics in the landscape of top college admissions. For this prompt, zoom in on a particular topic that genuinely fascinates you, whether it’s a specific academic subject, a philosophical idea, or a creative pursuit. Many students manufacture a response to this prompt based on what they assume will impress admissions officers—but if you aren’t truly interested in Kantian ethics, an admissions officer will be able to tell. However silly, mundane, quirky, or bizarre your “captivating concept” may be, if it’s true to you—write about it!
While your response should describe how a specific aspect of this topic captivates your interest and why it resonates with you on a deeper level, it should also demonstrate how you have taken the initiative to explore this topic in unique ways. Have you sought out books on the topic? Taken an online course to elevate your knowledge? Started a club to connect with others who share your interest? Developed a passion project that mobilized your interest in service of your community?
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
If none of the above prompts allow you to effectively express yourself, remember that the Common App includes an open prompt, wherein you can write on a topic of your choice! This is an excellent opportunity to share a story that doesn’t fit neatly into the other prompts but is crucial to understanding who you are. If you choose to pursue this prompt, make sure your essay is well-structured and cohesive, with a clear theme or message that ties everything together.
The Common App essay is more than just a component of your application; it’s a chance to speak directly to admissions officers and present your authentic self. Taking the time to brainstorm and edit will allow you to submit an essay that showcases your unique voice and original perspective to admissions officers at top colleges.

Plus, you want to impress everyone and stand out from other students. It's what drives hundreds of students towards BestEssay with the request: I want a professional essay writer to research and write my essay!
Our professional essay writing service caters to each customer!
What Makes Our Essay Writing Service Different?
You'll get thousands of results if you ask Google: "Who can write my essay? " Many paper writing services promise to provide the highest quality for cheap essay prices. But BestEssay doesn't just promise. We guarantee! Our essay service is better than most competitors, mainly because of our writer team. All essay writers from our company earned their MA or/and PhD degrees. Our best essay writers have been through all stages of education, and they know how to help a customer overcome common difficulties.
A professional essay writer understands students. They have studied the educational system, and they understand that it's disproportionate to a learner's capacity. Each writer who works for us developed a career out of their talent for academic writing. They use it to help others to overcome difficulties with lack of time, skills, and anything else that prevents them from completing content.
The excellence of our academic writers is only one of the factors that make us a better choice than other companies. There are other things the customer should consider:
- Our essay writing service gives more affordable prices to a customer when compared to other academic writing services. An essay starts with a price of $21.99 per page, and the customer gets a discount on that!
- You shouldn't worry about plagiarism when you hire a writer on our website. We know the rules of essay writing. An original paper is a high priority for each academic writer!
- We're so confident in the results our professional writers deliver that we guarantee refunds and revisions. If anything goes wrong with your order, you can ask for your money back. - Each customer can get fast essay help on BestEssay! They set the deadline, and our company respects it! Thanks to the capacity of the writer, we can reach deadlines of 3 hours for essays! If the customer orders a larger project, the deadline options in the form will be more limited. For example, we can complete a 10-page essay within 24 hours.
- We build trust through communication. The customer can always reach our team of representatives with any questions, queries, or complaints.
- Each user can rely on an order tracking system. You'll keep track of the paper's progress, knowing that the delivery is on the right track.

Benefits of Our Paper Writing Service
- As any other student, you must be wondering: How do I benefit from hiring someone to write my essay online? Our experts recommend learners to complete their own article. It's how they develop academic writing skills, which they benefit from in the future. But when that's impossible due to some obstacles, the grade depends on hiring an expert essay writer online . When you make that decision, you'll benefit in many ways:
- Your teachers aren't providing sufficient instructions on essay writing, so our customer needs someone to replace them in that role. An essay writer can give them instructions. They don't give general guidelines that are hard to follow in practice. On the contrary; a writer teaches by giving the customer an example. They will get a sample of a high-quality essay, which they can use to create an outline for their future assignments.
- Most students hire an essay writing service because they don't have enough time to write. With so many responsibilities around classes, extracurriculars, work, and friends, you find it impossible to plan some time for homework.
- You'll start meeting deadlines. Our writers know how hard it is for you to deal with all those requirements. They cause stress, which accumulates over time. When you outsource a part of your responsibilities to a writer, you can relax. The deadlines will be met, the academic record will be saved, and your peace of mind will become possible.
You Have a Close Deadline? Our Essay Service Can Handle It!
All students ask the same questions: "Why do my professors assign such fast deadlines? Why don’t they give me more time to write my essay? "
They have a reason for assigning a timeframe for each assignment. If they don’t give you the deadline, you would keep procrastinating. That often happens with dissertations and other major projects. For essays, it’s important for students to focus and start the process as early as possible.
There’s a problem that all customers of BestEssay indicate: the deadlines are fine, but teachers assign too many projects at the same time. Without the help of essay writers, it’s impossible to achieve everything.
In addition to the issue of having too many assignments within the same period of time, there’s another problem. It’s called procrastination. We always recommend starting the research and writing process as soon as possible. But your tendency towards procrastination gives you excuses: “There’s plenty of time to do research. I’ll start working on my essay next week.” Next week comes, but you fail to research even then.
You shouldn’t blame yourself for procrastinating. Everyone does it. When you’re young, rebellious and free, you want to spend time with your friends. You’ ll always choose them over essay writing. The idea that you can always hire a paper writer for a cheap price gives you peace of mind. No matter how fast we should be, we can do it! All the customer needs to do is set the date and time when they want the paper to be delivered. We’ll make sure to respect that requirement!
Guarantees to Look for in Essay Writing Services
If this is your first time hiring an essay writing service, you should get informed. Experienced customers know what they are looking for. If you’re new to the process, you’ll appreciate these guidelines:
Hire an essay writer with experience and appropriate education
Who can complete a better paper: a random freelancer or a writer with experience in the area of study? The answer is obvious. When you pay for a paper, you want it to be completed by writers. A custom essay writing service must guarantee to assign a writer with relevant knowledge to your assignment. Their expertise is guaranteed by an MA or PhD degree in the appropriate field of study.
The company’s terms and conditions have to protect users
Most essay writing services try to protect themselves with the terms. A legitimate essay service will protect its users from any potential scams. A customer should get guarantees for privacy protection, timely delivery, a unique paper, and everything else that concerns them. The terms should cover all aspects. You should have access to clear policies, which indicate your rights as a user. With such a foundation, you can be sure that the outcome will be positive.
A personalized approach is essential
A reliable essay writing service will never sell a pre-written article to multiple users. It should guarantee you personalized research. The essay writer will first analyze your requirements and start writing an academic paper from scratch. Their ultimate goal? It’s to reflect your style and your arguments through the writing. You should get a paper that you’ll be proud to present as your own.
You want NO plagiarism in your academic paper
Essay service can never guarantee specific grades when you send the requirement: “I need you to write my essay!” However, it will guarantee the best conditions that lead to high grades. First and foremost, plagiarism is not allowed in essay writing. It’s one of the most serious violations of all college/university rules. Each student is required to submit a unique essay. That’s why a legit essay paper writing service must guarantee the delivery of a plagiarism-free piece, which will be based on your personal guidelines.
Privacy protection makes all the difference
Our writers know this for sure: no professor would be happy to find out that you ordered a paper. You’re not forbidden to use essay writing help. You just don’t want anyone to find out about it. You have to make sure that the chosen paper writing service will never share your information with third parties. The paper must be delivered solely to you, and it must never be published. Check the privacy policies, so you’ll know you’re hiring the right writing company.
You want the best quality for an affordable price
Finally, let’s talk about a major matter of interest: cost-effectiveness. It means finding the perfect balance between quality and price. Don’t fall for the trick that you have to pay a lot to get an assignment of the best quality. Affordable essay writing services, such as BestEssay, will give you a low quote for top-notch results. That’s because they have fair terms towards their writers. When a writer gets most of what the customer pays, the writing service can afford to charge less.
Why Is Uniqueness So Important in a Paper Writing Service?
What’s the point of these assignments if plagiarism was allowed? Any student would copy or paraphrase the content in a matter of minutes. They wouldn’t conduct any research. They wouldn’t bother coming up with their own arguments. They wouldn’t learn anything through the process. That’s why all professors set the no plagiarism rule. Their goal is to push you to research and express your own arguments.
BestEssay is a paper writing service with long-term experience in the industry. No writer from our team has ever delivered a plagiarized paper. We established strict rules for a 100% unique paper and a personalized approach to each customer’s order. When you buy an essay from us, the essay writer will adjust their tone and style to fit your personality. That’s why the form is so detailed. We give you a chance to list all requirements, so we can assign the perfect writer and deliver essays of good quality to you.
Although the customer will hire a paper writer, they are still learning through this process. They will observe the process of developing a unique paper under specific requirements. They witness a writer’s creativity to come up with original arguments. Our customer also learns about the paper’s format, tone, and proper syntax structure.
The overall experience with a custom essay writing service depends on its capacity to deliver a plagiarism-free paper.
Guide Our Professional Essay Writers with Your Requirements!
What instructions should a customer provide when they hire a writer online? We’ll give you brief guidelines that make the writing process more effective:
What’s the topic?
When you come to BestEssay with the request "I want you to write my essay for me", this is the first question we’ll ask: what’s your topic?
The order form requires the customer to set a theme for the writer. If you don’t have a specific topic, you can write it in general. The writer will narrow it down. You’ll also choose the subject area during this step. We have writers covering the areas of literature, nursing, social studies, healthcare writing, science, economics, and many other niches.
What type of work do you need?
We usually get a request for academic essays, but our offer is much broader. You can also hire a writer to complete your research paper, case study, term paper, thesis, reaction paper, reflective thinking paper, and many other types of documents.
What if you don’t see the type of paper in the order form? We have agents attending the live chat 24/7. Contact them with your request, and they will do everything to find a writer who’s qualified to complete your specific project.
What’s your deadline?
This is one of the most important adjustments you’ll need to make in the order form. We’ll allow you to set a deadline that we can and we will meet. If you need a two-page essay for nursing or any other subject area, the shortest deadline available will be 3 hours. But if you hire a writer for a more complex paper that’s also longer, the fast essay options will be adjusted.
Our writers recommend you leave space before this deadline and the actual due date for your project. That gives you the time to ask for revisions and learn from the paper before submitting it.
Set the Other Parameters
The order form also asks for instructions on spacing, quality level, academic level, number of needed references, preferred language style, and more. If you already had a good experience with a writer from our team, you can indicate their ID. We’ll make sure to assign the same writer.
We also let you choose additional services when you hire BestEssay: proofreading by a pro editor, order completed by one of the top 10 writers from the niche, VIP customer support, one-page summary of your paper, and a VIP service package. These add-ons boost the value of writing.
The Importance of Revisions when Hiring an Essay Writing Service
If you hire professional writers, you can feel calm. The results will be brilliant when you deal with a service like BestEssay.
What if you don’t like something in the paper? Maybe it’s a single sentence that sounds unclear. Maybe it’s a gap in the logical flow, which needs to be fixed before you submit the assignment. You hire a writer for writing, and you don’t want to do the editing by yourself.
Don’t worry; we will never ask you to pay for additional editing when you buy an essay from us. If you have any remarks on the writer’s work, they will immediately act upon them.
We ask you to check the paper for any mistakes. It doesn’t matter what element of writing you want us to improve; just send us a request and we’ll cover the revisions for free.
You should analyze our terms and conditions before placing the order. They cover your rights to free revisions. As long as you provide detailed instructions for our writers, you can ask for amendments based on those requirements.
Even the best writers can make mistakes. Misunderstandings happen, too. Maybe they will do their best work, but the customer won’t like parts of it. We don’t suffer from a big ego. As our customer, you deserve to be 100% satisfied with the work you receive.
We Understand Your Need for an Affordable Price!
Affordability is of essential importance for each customer. They pay thousands of dollars for their education each year. Even if they earned a scholarship, they still have to cover the expenses for accommodation, books, bills, and everything else you need to support your lifestyle. They deserve to have a decent social life, too. It’s okay to have a share of the partying experience.
Do you have the budget to hire essay writers with all those expenses on your shoulders? You may have a job, but it doesn’t provide a good income. That’s why you need cheap quotes. Even if it’s a larger project, it should still fit in your budget.
Our pricing system is flexible. It’s based on these factors:
- Type of content (term paper, speech, reaction paper, or anything else)
- Quality level
- Number of pages
We’ll give you great discounts when you hire a writer. You’ll always save money when working with BestEssay. 15% off is a massive price reduction for all new customers. Our loyal users get up to 15% off, too!
The price calculator will give you an estimation for your project. In the order form, you’ll see a final price that doesn’t come with any hidden costs. If you have any questions, you can contact a customer service agent. We’ll immediately answer!
You Can Learn from Your Professional Paper Writer
What will you gain by collaborating with a pro essay writer?
- Let’s say you’re working on a science project and you don’t have experience with it. The research sources are confusing. You need someone to clarify the concept and develop strong arguments. When you hire our essay writing service, we offer professional writing assistance. We write an elaborate essay that explains the concept from a knowledgeable point of view. If your professor asks a question, you’ll be able to answer it just by reading the content.
- The writer won’t provide broad instructions. You could easily get such guidelines online. They are meaningless, since they aren’t tailored to your paper writing assignments. For example, a healthcare project requires a unique structure, which differs from the one you construct for a research paper. The writer you hire knows how to handle different types of projects.
- Our writers teach about the proper tone used in academics, too. When a professor requires you to complete essays, they don’t want something that looks like blogging. They want you to show your capacity for critical thinking and reflective thinking. They need to see strong arguments based on facts. That’s how you earn a good grade.
Do you Have More Questions? Talk to Us
BestEssay is non-stop available to offer professional essay writing services to any customer who needs them. You can talk to the representatives of our essay writer service at any moment. Use the live chat, send us an email, or call us by phone. We’ll be happy to attend to you.
And if you’re wondering when to place an order, remember: the sooner the better! That’s how you get the cheapest price!
What services do you offer?
Our professional academic writers offer assistance with college papers, article completion, critical thinking, speech writing, case study, research paper, thesis, term papers, reaction essays, reflective thinking, nursing essays, social studies and science projects, healthcare papers, and more. A writer can complete a dissertation of the finest quality for you. But if the customer only hired us for a college paper, that’s what they get!
Why should I choose BestEssay.co?
Our essay writing service is special because it delivers the best quality. A customer always works with the writer when they choose us. Each paper writer has a personalized approach to each user. How can I be sure the right writer is writing my paper?
You want to count on legitimate essay writing services, which assign pro writers to your fast essay order. Hiring writers online is not easy. Not everyone has the skill and experience to work on your topic. We formed the best paper writer team in the industry. Our writers complete good papers that impress professors. Remember this fact: your professional writer will have a graduate degree in the topic’s field of study. That makes all the difference.
How fast can you write an essay?
You can get a cheap essay in a matter of hours. 3 hours is our shortest deadline. It’s only available for simple assignments. But we make it possible for you to set short deadlines even for the most complex projects. We guarantee that when you use BestEssay to hire writers online, the assignment will be completed on time. Our online essay writing service has experience with fast orders.
What if I am not happy with my paper?
Even though we hired the most professional paper writers on the market, misunderstandings still happen. Whatever their remarks are, a customer can submit a requirement for revisions to our paper writing service. The amendments are already included in the price you paid. We will not charge any extra fees to the customer.
