In the United States, a person can be found not guilty of a crime because of insanity. This means that the person accused of a crime isn’t found innocent—the court has decided that they could not understand the severity of the crime. Some people argue that people should not be able to plead insanity after committing a crime, as the crime occurred whether they understood their actions or not. Others argue that the insanity defense is necessary to protect people who do not understand the consequences of their actions.

When writing a research paper on the insanity defense, it’s key to include examples from real-life legal cases, such as the Steven Steinberg case (1981) . Mr. Steinberg claimed he was sleepwalking and dreaming about a break-in to his home when he stabbed and killed his wife. You’ll want to be sure you’re basing your opinion on the most up-to-date information from the medical community.

In most US schools, school uniforms aren’t mandatory; instead, the school enforces a dress code. Dress codes define the clothing the school board finds acceptable for students. The dress code can vary from school to school, but for the most part, it requires students to wear appropriate clothing that is not overly short, formal, or dressy. Some argue that allowing students to choose their clothing for school promotes individuality and confidence. In other countries in the world, a school uniform is mandatory. The purpose of a school uniform is to eliminate any class issues where some children may be able to afford more fashionable clothes than others. Violent TV shows can have positive and negative impacts on teens worldwide. In this report discuss the pros and cons of violent TV shows. Some pros include reinforcing morals and prior beliefs that violence is wrong and has negative consequences. However, some argue that violent TV shows can justify violence in the viewer’s mind. 

In your report, analyze both sides of this argument and conclude by discussing your views. Include studies and data to support your arguments, looking at how violence can be perceived.

Peer pressure is one of the biggest challenges that teens face. Peer pressure can be severe, such as peer pressure to drink alcohol underage. However, it can also show up in milder ways, such as pressure to dress a certain way, listen to specific music, or follow the crowd. In your report, discuss the impact of peer pressure on teenagers’ self-esteem and examine how individuality can be challenging to achieve. Discuss factors contributing to peer pressure, like social media, bullying, etc. 

Music is argued to be a healing power for mental health, physical conditions and can even help plants grow. Study this theory and use research data to determine whether this is true. In your report, describe how music can be healing, but also look at the limitations. To create a compelling report, source real data on how music has been used to heal a health condition and discuss how much it can help.

Wildfires are becoming increasingly common all around the world. In particular, the US sees a high number of wildfires every year. In August 2002, devastating wildfires across California left many people without homes. 

In this report, discuss the causes and effects of wildfires across the globe. Use this report as an opportunity to bring attention to the noticeable effects of global warming and include ways in which governments can work to reduce wildfires.

Global warming is becoming increasingly common, making it an essential topic for argumentative and analytical reports. In your report, discuss the climate changes and how they have impacted the environment. 

For example, examine the glaciers and ice sheets shrinking, wildfires across the globe and the overall temperature increase in countries worldwide. Use scientific data to back up your report, keeping it factual and informative.

Parenting is a common topic for research reports, examining how upbringing and circumstance can help or hinder a child’s development and well-being. Study the effects of living in a single-parent household versus a joint-parent household on the well-being and success of children. There are many arguments both for and against single parenting. 

Some pros include that the child creates an excellent bond with the parent or the absent parent could negatively affect the child, so they shouldn’t be within the household. However, some cons can include the single parent becoming dependent on childcare. Discuss the effects of single parenting and look at both the positive and negative effects.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world; with it, social issues have come into focus. Some of the most impactful social challenges of the pandemic are the increasing rates of anxiety and depression . In your report, research and identify the main social challenges that we have faced since the pandemic and discuss the steps that can be taken to recover. Report-Writing: Some Questions And Answers

Is the report really necessary?

Not always. Could the report be replaced by a long-ish but informal email, by a phone conversation followed by a summary email, or by a short oral presentation at a departmental meeting, recorded by ‘bullet points’ in the meeting minutes?

You may not have the luxury of choice, especially if a project report is required as a condition of funding. But if you don’t need to write a report, don’t write it.

Who are the main readers of your report?

Are they subject specialists, university managers, members of a funding body, people with knowledge of business, or laypeople? Choose the style and language to suit. If you are writing for non-specialists, go easy on the jargon. And if you are writing a report for sponsors – or for your own university management – do comment on the costs and benefits of the research to the sponsors or the university as well as noting the academic challenge of your work.

How long should the report be?

It depends, but the ideal length may well be less than you think. Have you been given an expected word count or similar guidance? If not, remember that an eight-page report is more likely to be read than an eighty-page report. Unless you are writing for a PhD examiner, the reader doesn’t need to know all the details of your research methods, especially if you are using the standard techniques for your research area. Cut and summarise where possible.

With a mixed readership, one option is to produce a short report, with additional details in appendices. Specialist readers can read the whole document, whilst others can focus on the key results. Another option is to provide an ‘executive summary’, a one-to-two page extended abstract, with the report.

Is the report for information or does it seek action?

Make it clear to the reader if you want him or her to take action after reading the report. This is especially important if you are seeking additional funding, approval for a project extension, or permission to recruit an extra research assistant for example.

So don’t bury any requests in the body of the report. Make them clear in the opening paragraph and again in the concluding section.

Are there particularly effective ways to do the writing?

Even experienced authors sometimes have trouble starting to write. There are always more interesting things to do, even if it just means putting the kettle on for another coffee.

Many people feel it helps to just take a single sheet of paper and write ‘bullet points’, which provide a framework for the detailed text.

Others draw rough ‘storyboard’ diagrams to illustrate the main points they wish to include. This can help to develop a different perspective on the subject, and the diagrams themselves can be used as a framework for the writing.

Mind maps or spider diagrams – where the main theme forms the body of the ‘spider’, with subsidiary topics forming the legs – may also help. Find a method that works for you.

Once you have a framework of some sort, write the draft text without trying for perfection at this stage. Think of the writing process as equivalent to painting a room, with the first draft being the quickly-applied undercoat and the final draft the more-carefully-applied glossy layer.

Edit and simplify once you have a full first draft. Sometimes major changes will occur to you at this stage. That’s fine; one reason for writing the first draft quickly is that it is psychologically easier to make major changes a rough version than to a ‘near-final’ version.

Once you are happy with the ‘final’ draft, do proof-read it carefully. Ask a colleague to check it for you before sending it out; authors can become blind to typing errors after working for a while on a document. If English isn’t your first language, and sometimes even if it is, asking a native speaker to check the grammar can also help to improve the document.

Any other tips?

Include your contact details in the document. This can be done either on a front sheet or at the end, or both.

Think about a distribution list for the report. There may be people who aren’t necessarily in the target readership who nevertheless would be interested in the report.

If appropriate, phone or email the main recipients a few days after they have received the report, to ask if they have had chance to read it and if they have any comments or things they’d like to discuss with you.

Most assignments require either an essay or report. Essays and reports differ from one another in both their purpose and the information they contain.

Essay writing

While there are some basic steps for writing an essay, it is not always a straight forward process. You might like to work through the different stages a number of times. You may need to return to your reading and notetaking as you realise you are missing pieces of information. 

General layout and presentation of an essay

The essay is generally organised into three broad sections - introduction, body, conclusion. 

The introduction for the essay provides an overview of your assignment question and the arguments that you will make in this essay to answer it. The introduction captures the reader's interest and prepares the reader for what is to come The introduction is usually one paragraph in length.

The body of the essay uses ideas set out in the introduction, and expands on them to convince the reader of the argument or position of the author. The body is the largest section of the essay, with a number of paragraphs outlining a number of ideas or arguments related to the assignment question. 

You should focus on one idea or argument in each paragraph. Each paragraph should logically follow on from the one that precedes it to make sure that the essay is presenting a clear and connected argument throughout. Paragraphs should be at least three sentences in length (mirroring the introduction, body and conclusion of an essay). 

The conclusion bring together the ideas for the body of the assignment. It will sum up you ideas/arguments so the reader can understand in full the final position you are taking. The conclusion is only restating arguments that have been mad, and should not introduce new ideas or facts.   

Your teacher will instruct you on margins, spacing, font and paragraph formatting for your assignments.

R eport writing

A report provides an account of research or an investigation. It clearly describes, in logical sequence the steps that have been followed. Reports can be any length and can be:

Informational - contain facts/figures, e.g. sales, production or accident reports. Analytical - written to solve problems/situations, contain recommendations.

Report structures include numbered sections and have:

Major headings in upper case letters. They can be underlined. Minor headings indented from the left margin and in lower case letters. They can be underlined also.

These headings distinguish major ideas from minor ones, help to organise your material and enable you to maintain a consistent layout throughout the report.

Remember: Write your report to get your message across - above all, your report should provide a clear and concise analysis of the work undertaken with no unfinished work apparent.

Example of a report format:

Cover page (Name of the report, your name, date, course name/no.)

Executive summary or abstract: short summary of the report containing all the most important information such as the purpose, methods, findings, any recommendations and conclusion. Write this summary after you have finished the rest of the report.

Table of contents : list of all headings and corresponding page numbers in the report

Body of report: 1. INTRODUCTION (an example of a major heading)

1.1 Aim of the report (an example of a minor heading) Describe the aim or scope of the report. 1.2 Authorisation Why the report was requested and by whom. 1.3 Sources of information List interviews, laboratory procedure manuals consulted and so on.

2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

2.1 Information available A statement on the present situation.

3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

3.1 Summary of data 3.2 Explanation of tables and graphs 3.3 Analysis of data 3.4 Observation of results

4. CONCLUSION/S State what the results have proved or suggested. Do not introduce any new information at this stage of the report.

5. RECOMMENDATIONS (if required) It is recommended that: (action to be/not to be taken, or a choice can/cannot be made)

5.1 First recommendation 5.2 Second recommendation

Bibliography/Reference List

An essay usually consists of an introduction, the body, a conclusion and a reference list or bibliography. The assignment question will contain instruction or direction words.

Helpful Tips

• Use plain English: use familiar words rather than foreign phrases or scientific jargon.
• Don't use slang – try a dictionary or thesaurus to find a better word or term.
• Don’t use abbreviations such as “Aust”, “Qld”, “don’t” and “&” in essays.
• Be precise: use enough words to achieve clarity but avoid unnecessary words that can distract from the main point
• Acronyms: write the full name followed by the acronym in brackets, e.g. Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE). “DETE” can then be used throughout the rest of the essay.
• Word length – stay on target to avoid writing too much or too little.
• You must include in-text referencing within the body of the assignment.
• The reference list, works cited list, or bibliography must be included at the end of the essay. Your teacher will determine which list is appropriate for your assignment.
