My Christmas Holiday

Christmas is a time for gifting and sharing, but for me, the main focus is on having fun. I really enjoy myself at this time of year. Family is important to me, therefore I try to spend as much time with them as I can. The highlight of the holiday season is food, including candies, tamales, doughnuts, pastries, cake, rice, beans, and the gifts that we all get. Family, close friends, and holiday gatherings are some of the things that I enjoy the most.

On Christmas Eve, I get up early and get ready to clean the house. My relatives then begin to visit once the house is clean. We discuss old stories that have occurred in our lives over the course of the year during the time I spend with my family. Tamales are a significant Christmas tradition; it's a long process to make tamales, so it's the greatest time for my mother and aunts to catch up.

We assemble in the living room to open our presents at midnight. Afterwards, I tidy up the mess left by all the gifts. My friends visit the next day to wish Merry Christmas. We usually do secret santa so no one has to buy presents for everyone, instead everyone gets one friend for whom they have to buy a gift. This year, I got a heart shaped pendant from my friend along with socks that had Santa and his reindeers printed on it. We all clicked many pictures wearing red and white christmas sweaters and scarves. We usually end our day watching christmas movies till late at night and eating the leftovers from dinner.

Christmas is a symbol of merry-making and is celebrated on the 25th of December every year. The festival falls in winter and a few days before the New Year. It is dedicated to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. The celebration is conducted with great adulation and respect to honour the Lord. People all across the world celebrate it with great fun and enthusiasm. The festival is secular to all, and any community can celebrate it with the family members and friends.

The celebration is observed to regard the birth of Jesus Christ. The story of His birth is narrated in the Holy Bible into parts known as Gospels. The first Gospel tells about the birth, the second tells about the other part, and the last two parts explains that He is the messenger of God. Christians believe that Jesus is the holy teacher and the Messiah of God. The earliest word for Christmas was ‘Yule’ derived from the German language which means the feast of the winter solstice.

In other languages, the corresponding terms include- Navidad in Spanish, Weihnachten in German meaning hallowed night and Noel in French. Since ancient times, Christmas has been a family holiday celebrated both by Christians and Non-Christians. Most Christians celebrate the festival on 25th December as per the Gregorian calendar. But some Christians like Jehovah’s Witnesses do not observe and indulge in the celebration because they believe that Jesus has not instructed in the Bible to celebrate Christmas or his birth.

The church is lit with candles, and a lot of Bible reading is done. A crib is set up in the church and houses of people which depicts the scene of the birth of Jesus. A Christmas tree is installed in the church and home, which is further decorated with colourful lights, shiny coloured balls, and sparkly ornaments. The Christmas tree is set up generally in the house. It is a custom to give presents and cards to the near and dear ones. Moreover, it is also given to the poor and needy people. Santa Claus, a mystic figure is prominent in the celebration. He is also named as the Father of Christmas. According to the age-old tradition, Santa Claus arrives in a sledge driven by reindeer’s and places the gifts under the Christmas tree. In order to see him, the children must behave appropriately as he loves well-behaved children.

Children in Europe hung up stockings in front of the fireplace so that Santa Claus fills the stockings with nuts, raisins, chocolates and candies. In the evening a huge feast is made containing dishes like roasted meat and vegetables.

The meal may differ depending upon the family. A particular type of bread and cake is served on the table. A pastry biscuit called shortbread is popular and prepared on the eve of Christmas. People forget their worries and enjoy the festival with a cheerful mood.
