I am planning to pursue a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) which requires a registered nurse to complete 1,800 hours of clinical pediatric care for two consecutive years after which he/she is eligible to undertake the examination. Many nurses have informed me, the ICU can take a personal toll on a nurse because not every patient may survive while others are blessed with life. However, I do not see ICU as a place full of illness and pain.  I see it as a place that I can make someone is last moments the best or make their recovery as relaxed as possible.  This leads to my personal nursing goal to spend my nursing career giving every patient quality care, my personal time, and my personal commitment to ensure their visit is one of compassionate care.

I intend to apply myself diligently to my studies because I am passionate about education. The more I learn about nursing during my years of medical studies, the more equipped I will be to help my patients. This is one the reasons for choosing the nursing profession.  I want to go to work every day knowing that I can help somebody who could be going through the worst day of his or her life.  I want to be able to hold patients hands and assure them that everything is going to be all right, even when it is not going to be.

At my tender of 50, I believe my years of professional experience combined with the BSN curriculum will provide me the perfect foundation to becoming a nurse while venturing into the nursing educational career path. The entry into the nursing industry should be an easy transition with the must documented future nursing shortages.  According to National Academy of Sciences (2008),” Our most conservative estimates say that by 2020 we will be short about 340,000 nurses. The Bureau of Labor Statistics thinks that the number will be 1.4 million” (pg.22).  One of my professional goals is to be among the many potential nurses that can help fill the void of the future nursing shortages.

Personal Definition of Nursing

My definition of nursing is to educate people about a healthy lifestyle that can reduce the number and seriousness of preventative illnesses and accidents. However, when people become ill regardless of the reason, diagnosis, or anticipated prognosis—a nurse must give the best possible care, comfort, and protection.  Variables such as the patients, race, SES, and religion must not affect the nursing care a patient receives.  Nursing care is not always provided in a state-of-the-art hospital:  It may take place in a remote nursing station, in a private home, a prison, or in a third-world country where there would be a definite lack of our modern day medical technology.  A good nurse remains positive under these conditions so as not to worry her patients and improvises as much as possible.  An easy work situation is a rarity for nurses.  Therefore, they should be prepared to work hard and smart.  A nurse must be committed to her profession, whatever that may require at any given time.

Concept of Career Opportunities in the Nursing Field

There are an overwhelming number of opportunities in the nursing field.  Depending upon the size of the hospital, one can find staff nurses, nurses in charge of a ward, nurses with specialties such as ICU nurses, operating room nurses, recovery room nurses, geriatric nurses, pediatric nurses, oncology nurses, orthopedic nurses, director of nurses, nurse practitioners, and others.  The higher positions, obviously, require more education.  I believe that once I have more-than-satisfactorily completed my BSN and performed well as a nurse, if I wanted to advance to my goal of an ICU nurse and facilitator of patient post op care, I would, in due course, be given any required specialty education and subsequent placements. On the other hand, I may, eventually, wish to obtain my MSN or NP.  Again, I believe that if I have performed well in all areas of my responsibilities, including ethical behaviour with patients and their families as well as working within the line of authority as delineated in the organizational chart, I could count on my hospital to give me the necessary opportunity and support.

The opportunities that exist for nurses are almost without limits.  Nurses can work in nursing stations in remote communities and on reserves.  In these places, their scope of nursing duties is usually greater than it would be in a city, and so is their pay.  In some cases, nurses can live in these locations, while in other cases they just travel (usually by plane) in for a couple of days.  Nurses can also work for the Red Cross in the USA and Canada as well as in third-world countries where the work is varied and the scope of duties greatly increased. Nurses are also employed in doctors’ offices; in industry; in various public health functions; and in education, the latter being an area into which it is currently my goal to enter when I am around 50 years of age.  Here there also exist various venues.  I could go into teaching nursing at universities here or abroad.  I cannot think of another career that offers the many opportunities that nursing does.

Nursing has become particularly important in recent years and became especially important to the clinical system during the COVID-19 pandemic. By now, there are over 4.2 million registered nurses in the United States (USAHS). This large number represents about 1.3 percent of the nation’s total population, which means about one in 100 Americans is a registered nurse. This data shows how critical this role is to society, as a large number of people from various states would not choose the profession if it were not in demand. The Rafferty study indicates that “nurses can realise their potential as change agents in building a better future for health care” (Rafferty 475). Additionally, USAHS reports that the number of male nurses has tripled over the past 50 years, which also reflects a positive trend in this professional role and rapid removal of stigma.

There has historically been a bias against nurses regarding their importance. Although the nurse’s role is not controversial for patients who frequently encounter clinics and other stakeholders, healthy people can provoke stigma toward such staff. This prejudice has nothing to do with the current level of medical development since the nurse has long since ceased to be an adjunct to the physician but has been given a separate role, a theoretical foundation, and new functions. Opportunities for continual growth and helping sick people are features of today’s RNs that appeal to my career choice. Thus, my altruistic nature and desire to overcome stigma motivate me to continue my BSN training.

Since my chosen career is feasible, I have to think about the organizational details of professional development. I have to spend at least four years to get my BSN, which is the standard time frame for an undergraduate degree. However, it is likely that I will want to continue my studies after the BSN, in which case I will need additional time. To be specific, I will say that four years is the minimum I wish to cover, to begin with. The cost also depends on the state and university, but the average cost is about $40,000 (NJ). Hence, my plan is to continue to make savings at a compound interest rate that will help me have financial protection. I plan to study all four years carefully and do my homework and tests to get the solid knowledge I will need in the future.

To emphasize the bottom line, my central career goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in registered nursing. This is the most specific and pressing goal I have set for myself in terms of career advancement. However, once I receive my BSN, I have no plans to graduate, as I want to advance my knowledge continually. Professional development requires careful academic work on myself, but in addition, I will also need to save up some money. To put it another way, in the next four years, I plan to work hard on my education in order to fulfill my personal career goal.

Introduction

I have to say that the decision of my nursing career has been largely the product of my past practice, which has helped me enjoy the profession over a period of time. Being the first child in my family, I was brought up by being encouraged to be responsible not only to myself but also to others. For a period of time, my mother expected to look after my younger siblings and manage the house while she worked shift after shift to provide financial help for the household. It is, however, important to note that this did not affect me in any wrong way possible, in fact, it made me more determined to work hard so that I may thrive financially in the future. I began to notice that I had qualities that would perfectly suit me into the nursing profession from my early years in high school. I have not only upheld endurance and strong grades but have always had an enduring personality. Because my mother could not afford to push me through to college as she had to support both my siblings and me. I choose to join the army and slowly and slowly I would save enough money sponsor my own nursing educational career, as well as, help her financially support the family. In the army, I have also gained new experience and that experience has molded me especially in stress management, as well as, effectively dealing with both intense and rigorous situations. I have been taking online courses last semester and I’m currently preparing for a bachelor in science of nursing. This particular paper is a clear statement of the 3 goals of my educational career at the Colorado Christian University.

Attaining the principle characteristics that determine a successful nurse

Nursing is the act of protecting, promoting, as well as, preventing injury and illness. Nursing does this by making sure that suffering is alleviated through the process of diagnosis and treatment of the human symptoms and responses. It can also be acknowledged that nurses act as advocates for families, individuals, communities, as well as, bigger human populations (American Nurses Association, 2001). A nurse should make sure that he/she is fully capable of influencing his/her career path. Personally, I believe that nursing engages an individual holistically, that is, the mind, body, and the soul. It is known to be a physically demanding job, however, it should also be widely acknowledged that as a job it also demands a lot of emotional input from an individual. I believe that my academic performance in high Scholl, as well as, the experiences I have gained in school and in the army lay a perfect foundation for this educational career. One of the major core characteristics I need to gain I hope to attain is the ability to work effectively with a team of nurses. In the army, I have been trained to work with a team in the most life threatening situations, however, in nursing is quite different and I’m willing to seek out for help when necessary. The other fundamental quality is learning to understand and appreciate diversity, thus, to always understand and appreciate the differences in people.

To be committed to lifelong learning

Education never ends, thus, people continue to learn despite their age. I know that my education in nursing will not stop at graduation, however, it will continue throughout my nursing profession. Becoming a nurse is applying the knowledge already acquired and in the process acquiring the knowledge that had not previously been acquired.

To provide my nursing services to the less fortunate and those in need of medical assistance

One of my wishes has been to give back to the community. There are very many ways through which a nurse can give back to the community. Personally, after I have acquired enough skills in the nursing profession, I plan to volunteer in disaster organizations to help people across the globe that have been hit by various disasters, for example, earthquakes and pandemics.

I choose nurse as a career due to previous experiences and it is this experiences that laid a foundation for the nursing career. I have established important goals in my nursing career and hey include, to provide my nursing services to the less fortunate and those in need of medical assistance, to be committed to lifelong learning, and to attain the principle characteristics that determine a successful nurse.

The healthcare industry is one career field that has some of the best minds working together for the betterment of the medical industry, as well as the lives of millions of people. Apart from working in a diverse and challenging work environment, medical practitioners are guaranteed a financially stable life. To be able to manage patients’ needs properly, nurse practitioners are encouraged to have specific specializations and develop expertise on that specific field. In my case, I have come up with specific short-term and long-term goals that will guide me through my journey in becoming one of the bust nurse practitioners and educators in America. My goals include finishing my BS Nursing degree, work as a professional nurse, complete a Masters Degree in adult/geriatric nursing, and become an educator. Just like the thousands of students enrolled in medical schools, my short-term goals include completing my BSN and start working as a professional nurse. Although I still have a couple more years before I finish my degree, I can already see myself receiving my diploma that represents four-years of preparation for the career I am passionate about. After completing my degree, I will then prepare myself for the National Council Licensure Examination for nurses, a state licensing exam that will prove I am fit and certified to work as a nurse. After passing the exam, I will then begin my career in the medical and service industry. There are many avenues for advancement in nursing. Experience, excellent performance, and continuous education can help individuals move up from being a nurse assistant to supervisor to directorship level. After spending years as a regular nurse, as well as gaining the necessary experience in the field of nursing, my next plan is to obtain a Master’s Degree in adult/geriatric nursing, which would help me become proficient in this field. I chose this field because I recognize that there are many opportunities in adult care, including assisting adult patients in understanding, maintaining, and promoting their health. With this advanced experience, I will be able to touch more lives and attend to people who are already in the latter years of their lives. Somehow, I would like to be part of a group that would make things easier and lighter for these adults. I would like to be able to focus on helping adults manage and assess their health, illnesses, and other chronic diseases that they may have, and stress the importance of prevention and wellness especially considering their ages. Thus, I would expect that I will also learn how to care for adults in various clinical settings, such as nursing homes and home settings. Finally, I also intend to go into teaching and become a nursing educator. With my years of experience as a nurse, I foresee that I will go into teaching to educate future nurses. By then, I will be able to share my knowledge and practical skills to the next generation nurses for them to become effective in their roles in the nursing field. I would love to develop lesson plans, teach various nursing subjects, and oversee students during their clinical practice to ensure that they are performing their roles correctly. Hopefully, with the many years I will spend in school as a student and at the hospital as a nurse, I can share many instructive, positive, and interesting knowledge and experiences to would-be nurses. I can also serve as a good role model for my students. With the many opportunities that the nursing industry offers, I only have to focus on these goals to become successful in this field. My short-term and long-term goals will serve as my guiding force that will lead me to the career path I want. Therefore, for now, I will do everything to become a nurse even if I have to do things one step at a time.

It’s impossible to become a nurse without having some strong nursing career goals. Nursing education has two-levels: you can complete your studies by obtaining a bachelor’s degree, or you can continue your education in the magistracy.

The goals of nursing covers the various skills necessary for the proper performance of the profession: the planning and implementation of nursing supervision, the ability to be a member of a team, adherence to the principles of professional ethics, the implementation of preventive, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation measures in compliance with the existing rules, comprehensive and individualized care for the sick, disabled or dying, initiating and supporting local activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, the practical application of knowledge of the theoretic nursing, medical and social sciences, as well as legislation relating to the profession, skillful communication with the patient, his family and other members of the team medical staff.

One of the undoubted advantages of choosing this nursing direction is almost absolute confidence in future employment. In addition, the market is quite large and diverse. In each locality, its specificity may look something different, and we are given the opportunity to choose from among the different types of places of employment.

Graduation in the direction of the “nursing business” doesn’t mean that you will be “doomed” to work in a hospital: you can successfully realize yourself, for example, in polyclinics, private medical offices, social welfare institutions, various types of daycare or ambulance departments. There are a lot of opportunities, which allows you to adapt the specifics of duties to your own preferences. In addition, foreign languages should be taught – many graduates of the “nursing” direction are judged to go abroad, where they can count on a much higher salary in short-term than at home.

It’s difficult to imagine a hospital or a clinic without nurses, which ensure the order in the institution and strictly fulfil the orders of the doctor. They can not only provide physical help but also reassure the patient, give him/her attention.
