In their spare time, teenagers LOVE doing extra research , by investigating the facts of a certain subject and studying and recording what they learn. And if you believe that, you need to do more research on the habits of teenagers.

Research comes from the Old French word recercher , meaning "seek out," or "search closely." When you do research, you are searching for knowledge and facts. Although you write plenty of research papers in college, on anything from the Industrial Revolution to the meaning behind a fur-lined teacup, the term is often used when talking about science, because scientists use step-by-step research to prove what is true, or not true, in their line of work.

50 Useful Academic Words & Phrases for Research

Like all good writing, writing an academic paper takes a certain level of skill to express your ideas and arguments in a way that is natural and that meets a level of academic sophistication. The terms, expressions, and phrases you use in your research paper must be of an appropriate level to be submitted to academic journals.

Therefore, authors need to know which verbs , nouns , and phrases to apply to create a paper that is not only easy to understand, but which conveys an understanding of academic conventions. Using the correct terminology and usage shows journal editors and fellow researchers that you are a competent writer and thinker, while using non-academic language might make them question your writing ability, as well as your critical reasoning skills.

What are academic words and phrases?

One way to understand what constitutes good academic writing is to read a lot of published research to find patterns of usage in different contexts. However, it may take an author countless hours of reading and might not be the most helpful advice when faced with an upcoming deadline on a manuscript draft.

Briefly, “academic” language includes terms, phrases, expressions, transitions, and sometimes symbols and abbreviations that help the pieces of an academic text fit together. When writing an academic text–whether it is a book report, annotated bibliography, research paper, research poster, lab report, research proposal, thesis, or manuscript for publication–authors must follow academic writing conventions. You can often find handy academic writing tips and guidelines by consulting the style manual of the text you are writing (i.e., APA Style , MLA Style , or Chicago Style ).

However, sometimes it can be helpful to have a list of academic words and expressions like the ones in this article to use as a “cheat sheet” for substituting the better term in a given context.

How to Choose the Best Academic Terms

You can think of writing “academically” as writing in a way that conveys one’s meaning effectively but concisely. For instance, while the term “take a look at” is a perfectly fine way to express an action in everyday English, a term like “analyze” would certainly be more suitable in most academic contexts. It takes up fewer words on the page and is used much more often in published academic papers.

You can use one handy guideline when choosing the most academic term: When faced with a choice between two different terms, use the Latinate version of the term. Here is a brief list of common verbs versus their academic counterparts:

)
add up calculate
carry out execute
find out discover
pass out distribute
ask questions about interrogate
make sense of interpret
pass on distribute

Although this can be a useful tip to help academic authors, it can be difficult to memorize dozens of Latinate verbs. Using an AI paraphrasing tool or proofreading tool can help you instantly find more appropriate academic terms, so consider using such revision tools while you draft to improve your writing.

An Easy-to-Understand Clinical Research Glossary to Support Participants and Professionals

Blog June 18, 2024

synonym for research on

Research assistants, clinical research coordinators, and other clinical research professionals are often the study team members with whom participants (and potential participants) interact the most when joining or learning about a research study, throughout their participation, and whenever they have questions. During the recruitment and consent process, as well as during the study, participants should be supported with clear explanations of what specific clinical research terms mean.

To that end, The Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center ( MRCT Center ) of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard has introduced the Clinical Research Glossary (CRG) , which offers plain language definitions along with additional contextual information that research professionals can use to empower participants and their families.

The availability of these definitions for all sites and sponsors to use allows for a harmonized approach across the research ecosystem, increasing the likelihood of consistency in terminology across the study life cycle itself, and even between studies. This supports participants and the research enterprise, countering research misinformation and increasing researcher trustworthiness.

Some key facts about the MRCT Center’s Clinical Research Glossary:

  • The CRG is freely available and aims to provide clear definitions in plain language and helpful extra content (e.g., graphics and additional information for potential participants to consider when joining a study), so each concept is easier for every person to understand.
  • The CRG definitions have been included by the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium  (CDISC) in its global clinical research standards, so more and more research leaders are turning to these definitions.
  • Every definition was co-created by the MRCT Center and a workgroup made up of volunteers with expertise across the clinical research ecosystem. We prioritize the patient voice and research advocates, while also drawing on the experience of medical writers, librarians, other nonprofit professionals, and sponsor representatives. Some of these definitions were even reviewed by fifth graders to ensure clarity of information.
  • Most terms found in the CRG have a bespoke image designed by the MRCT Center team, produced by graphic designers, and reviewed by the team of volunteers. The extra information goes through a similar process of multiple reviews before it is published on the website.
  • The MRCT Center will update the CRG over time, adding new words and refreshing old content as needed.

This tool can be implemented in various ways:

  • Use the CRG for onboarding to familiarize new staff with key clinical research terminology.
  • Print the CRG as a PDF for use during recruitment, consent, and study visits.
  • Incorporate CRG information into educational materials to aid participants in following study instructions and facilitate conversations.
  • Download the CRG as an Excel file to integrate with other site lexicons.
  • Provide the CRG to participants as an educational resource, either via link or on a study-specific website.

As long as the Creative Commons license is followed, anyone can reuse the content and graphics.

While we welcome all participation, we are especially grateful for the perspective of research professionals with direct, frequent participant engagement. Specifically, please share with us terms that need to be clarified or added to the CRG.

What Makes the MRCT Center’s Clinical Research Glossary Different

synonym for research on

A problem is a situation, condition, or issue that creates difficulty or presents an obstacle to achieving a desired goal or outcome. Problems can be identified in various contexts, including personal, professional, social, and technical environments. They require resolution to improve circumstances, processes, or performance. A solution is a method, process, or action taken to resolve a problem or address an issue.

Writing a short problem statement can help clearly define the issue at hand. For instance, a business problem solving proposal outlines the steps and strategies needed to tackle specific business challenges. In academic settings, a thesis problem statement articulates the research problem and its significance. Crafting a comprehensive problem statement is essential for setting the stage for finding effective solutions. Addressing a communication problem involves identifying barriers to effective communication and implementing strategies to overcome them.

Supply Chain Attack on WordPress.org Plugins Leads to 5 Maliciously Compromised WordPress Plugins

On Monday June 24th, 2024 the Wordfence Threat Intelligence team became aware of a plugin, Social Warfare, that was injected with malicious code on June 22, 2024 based on a forum post by the WordPress.org Plugin Review team. We immediately checked the malicious file and uploaded it to our internal Threat Intelligence platform, which identified four additional plugins that were infected with similar code. We then reached out to the WordPress plugins team to alert them about the four additional plugins but have not yet received a response, though it appears the plugins have been delisted.

As of this moment, we know that the following plugins are infected:

  • Patched Version: 4.4.7.3
  • Patched Version: None
  • Patched Version: It appears that someone removed the malicious code, however, the latest version is tagged as 1.0.0 which is lower than the infected versions. This means it may be difficult to update to the latest version, so we recommend removing the plugin until a properly tagged version is released.
  • Patched Version None

At this stage, we know that the injected malware attempts to create a new administrative user account and then sends those details back to the attacker-controlled server. In addition, it appears the threat actor also injected malicious JavaScript into the footer of websites that appears to add SEO spam throughout the website. The injected malicious code is not very sophisticated or heavily obfuscated and contains comments throughout making it easy to follow. The earliest injection appears to date back to June 21st, 2024, and the threat actor was still actively making updates to plugins as recently as 5 hours ago. At this point we do not know exactly how the threat actor was able to infect these plugins.

Currently, the Wordfence Threat Intelligence team is performing a deeper analysis and will provide more information as it becomes available. We are actively working on a set of malware signatures to provide detection for these compromised plugins, however, if you are running a malicious version of one of the plugins, you will be notified by the Wordfence Vulnerability Scanner that you have a vulnerability on your site and you should update the plugin where available or remove it ASAP.

Indicators of Compromise

  • 94.156.79.8

If you have any of these plugins installed, you should consider your installation compromised and immediately go into incident response mode. We recommend checking your WordPress administrative user accounts and deleting any that are unauthorized, along with running a complete malware scan with the Wordfence plugin or Wordfence CLI and removing any malicious code.

You can view our full guide to cleaning your WordPress site here , or you can sign up for Wordfence Care or Wordfence Response where we offer complete incident response services for an entire year 24/7/365.

I upgraded to the patched version of Social warfare but my Wordfence scan is telling me to remove that plugin completely. Should I be worried?

' src=

Hi Irene, it sounds like you're likely getting a warning because the plugin is currently delisted in the repository. We generally recommend removing any plugins that have been closed or delisted in the repository. However, if you are running Social Warfare on version 4.4.7.3, then you should be able to safely disregard the notice as that version is "patched."

' src=

Do you think we need to be worried about other plug-in updates? Or was this limited to these 5 plug-ins.

Hi Elizabeth, at this point it appears to be isolated to just those 5 plugins so I wouldn't worry too much about other plugin updates. However, out of extra caution, I would recommend reviewing the change-sets of any plugin updates prior to updating them on any sites you run to make sure no malicious code is present.

Global Growth Is Stabilizing for the First Time in Three Years

But 80% of world population will experience slower growth than in pre-COVID decade

WASHINGTON, June 11, 2024 — The global economy is expected to stabilize for the first time in three years in 2024—but at a level that is weak by recent historical standards, according to the World Bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects report.

Global growth is projected to hold steady at 2.6% in 2024 before edging up to an average of 2.7% in 2025-26. That is well below the 3.1% average in the decade before COVID-19. The forecast implies that over the course of 2024-26 countries that collectively account for more than 80% of the world’s population and global GDP would still be growing more slowly than they did in the decade before COVID-19.

Overall, developing economies are projected to grow 4% on average over 2024-25, slightly slower than in 2023. Growth in low-income economies is expected to accelerate to 5% in 2024 from 3.8% in 2023. However, the forecasts for 2024 growth reflect downgrades in three out of every four low-income economies since January. In advanced economies, growth is set to remain steady at 1.5% in 2024 before rising to 1.7% in 2025.

“Four years after the upheavals caused by the pandemic, conflicts, inflation, and monetary tightening, it appears that global economic growth is steadying,” said Indermit Gill, the World Bank Group’s Chief Economist and Senior Vice President. “ However, growth is at lower levels than before 2020. Prospects for the world’s poorest economies are even more worrisome. They face punishing levels of debt service, constricting trade possibilities, and costly climate events. Developing economies will have to find ways to encourage private investment, reduce public debt, and improve education, health, and basic infrastructure. The poorest among them—especially the 75 countries eligible for concessional assistance from the International Development Association—will not be able to do this without international support.”

This year, one in four developing economies is expected to remain poorer than it was on the eve of the pandemic in 2019. This proportion is twice as high for countries in fragile- and conflict-affected situations. Moreover, the income gap between developing economies and advanced economies is set to widen in nearly half of developing economies over 2020-24 —the highest share since the 1990s. Per capita income in these economies—an important indicator of living standards—is expected to grow by 3.0% on average through 2026, well below the average of 3.8% in the decade before COVID-19.

Global inflation is expected to moderate to 3.5% in 2024 and 2.9% in 2025, but the pace of decline is slower than was projected just six months ago. Many central banks, as a result, are expected to remain cautious in lowering policy interest rates. Global interest rates are likely to remain high by the standards of recent decades—averaging about 4% over 2025-26, roughly double the 2000-19 average.

“Although food and energy prices have moderated across the world, core inflation remains relatively high—and could stay that way,” said Ayhan Kose, the World Bank’s Deputy Chief Economist and Director of the Prospects Group . “That could prompt central banks in major advanced economies to delay interest-rate cuts. An environment of ‘higher-for-longer’ rates would mean tighter global financial conditions and much weaker growth in developing economies.”

The latest Global Economic Prospects report also features two analytical chapters of topical importance. The first outlines how public investment can be used to accelerate private investment and promote economic growth. It finds that public investment growth in developing economies has halved since the global financial crisis, dropping to an annual average of 5% in the past decade. Yet public investment can be a powerful policy lever. For developing economies with ample fiscal space and efficient government spending practices, scaling up public investment by 1% of GDP can increase the level of output by up to 1.6% over the medium term.

The second analytical chapter explores why small states—those with a population of around 1.5 million or less—suffer chronic fiscal difficulties. Two-fifths of the 35 developing economies that are small states are at high risk of debt distress or already in it. That’s roughly twice the share for other developing economies. Comprehensive reforms are needed to address the fiscal challenges of small states. Revenues could be drawn from a more stable and secure tax base. Spending efficiency could be improved —especially in health, education, and infrastructure. Fiscal frameworks could be adopted to manage the higher frequency of natural disasters and other shocks. Targeted and coordinated global policies can also help put these countries on a more sustainable fiscal path.

5 Free and Easy Ways to Draw New Customers to Your Side Hustle

Published on June 22, 2024

Kailey Hagen

By: Kailey Hagen

  • Targeted apps can easily connect people in certain types of businesses to customers seeking those services.
  • Social media is one of the best ways to get the word out about your new business for free.
  • Tried-and-true methods like word of mouth and putting up flyers still work today.

Check out our pick for the best cash back credit card of 2024

There are a lot of hurdles to starting a side hustle, but one of the biggest is learning how to draw in new customers. Paid advertising is one option, but it's not feasible for all new business owners. If you've spent a lot on inventory getting your business up and running or it's just a part-time venture you're using to bring in a little extra cash, spending money on advertising might not feel like a good investment right now.

1. Targeted apps

Apps built to connect certain types of business providers with customers can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. For example, if you want to start working as a dog walker, you could join a dog-walking app that can connect you to people looking for someone to walk their dogs.

Help choosing the right CRM software for your business

Finding the perfect CRM software can really make a difference in how you connect with your customers, streamline your sales, and uncover valuable insights. It’s all about choosing a system that feels like a natural extension of your business, growing with you and fitting seamlessly with your other tools.

Below are some of our current favorite options for CRM software that combine value with features we expect to see in a top notch CRM system.

2. Social media

Practically everyone is on social media these days, so it's a great place to get the word out about your business. You can even make a dedicated page for your company and invite your friends to like and share it.

Doing this is free, though you'll still have to do the work of creating posts and responding to questions from potential customers. It takes a bit of practice, but for many, it's time well spent. Be careful about posting in social media groups, though. Some have rules that prohibit members from advertising goods and services.

3. Word of mouth

Perhaps the oldest form of advertising, word of mouth also remains one of the most powerful. It's tough to beat a great testimonial from a satisfied customer. Plus, when others spread the word about your business, it can help you reach a much larger audience than you could on your own.

If they're willing, encourage family and friends to pass your name along to anyone who might be interested in the goods or services you have to offer. You could even offer referral bonuses to existing customers who send you new customers as a way to incentivize getting the word out.

A lot of businesses have bulletin boards that advertise other businesses and upcoming local events. They might be willing to help you advertise your side hustle as well. Technically, this one isn't free, but the cost of printing flyers shouldn't be too hard on your bank account .

Go around to local businesses and ask if you can advertise your services. Remember to always be polite and make sure your flyers have all the information a potential customer would need to know what your business does and how they can contact you.

5. Local events

Depending on the type of side hustle you have, local events can provide an opportunity to meet with new potential customers. For example, if you make jewelry, you could participate in local craft fairs that get your pieces in front of new faces.

Scout your neighborhood events calendar and check out the calendars for other nearby towns as well. If there's anything that seems as if it might be a good fit for you, reach out to the organizers to figure out how you can get involved.

Choose one or two of these strategies and give them a shot for a little while. Once you see the effect they have, you can decide whether they're worth continuing or whether you want to try a different approach to finding new customers.

Juneteenth: What to know about the historical celebration that's now a federal holiday

On june 19, 1865 slaves in galveston, texas were given the news that they were freed by president abraham lincoln. now, the day is a holiday that celebrates the "second independence day" in america..

Three years after it was made a federal holiday , Juneteenth 2024 marks a day of celebration as well as education.

The federal holiday known as “Second Independence Day,” marks the day the last African American slaves were notified that they had been freed from their masters, the National Museum of African American History and Culture said.

Dr. Tim Goler, a professor of urban affairs and sociology courses and director of research for the Center for African American Public Policy at Norfolk State University, told USA TODAY that Juneteenth or "Freedom Day" is a day that shows the "beauty of our culture" that everyone should participate in.

The origins of Juneteenth date back to June 19, 1865 – more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation - when the Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, Goler said.

“This delay and the enforcement of the emancipation in Texas was due to a lack of enforcement until this general arrived," Goler said. "Then Juneteenth thus became this kind of powerful symbol of freedom and the long struggle for civil rights."

The Juneteenth National Independence Day A ct was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate in June 2021. The bill was signed by President Joe Biden on June 17, 2021, which officially made the day a federal holiday.

Here's what you need to know about Juneteenth.

An African American holiday: Predating Juneteenth was nearly lost to history. It's back.

Black History, Juneteenth becoming more cemented in fabric of US

Although Juneteenth is now becoming a part of the conversation regarding Black History, there was a time when Black History was not widely discussed within the educational system, especially for historians, said Dr. Alan Singer, a professor of teaching, learning and technology at Hofstra University who writes about the history of slavery and racism.

“I didn't learn it (until) I was an adult, really (in the) 1990s, when as a teacher, I started studying more, so I (could) incorporate it into my lessons,” he said. “I went to City College in the 1960s and they had first introduced a course called ‘American Negro History’ and that was the first time I had learned about any of these things. I took the course because I became a political activist while at City College and I needed to know more about the African American civil rights struggles.”

Singer also adds that he attended high school during the Civil Rights Movement and was never taught about Black History. To change that, he decided to educate himself more to properly teach his students.

“I just felt a heavy responsibility as a teacher to really present a much more accurate picture of the history of the United States,” he said.

Goler adds that Juneteenth has been recognized for years within the Black community and history. Now, the day has become more publicly known.

"In recent years, Juneteenth has gained a much wider recognition. It's only been since 2021 that it became that designated as a federal holiday," he said. "Many Black people and Black communities around the country have celebrated Juneteenth. It's just becoming much more wider and much more visible now."

Commercialization of Juneteenth

Since Juneteenth has been declared a federal holiday, many retailers have unveiled Juneteenth attire through clothing, footwear, hats and other merchandise.

"The question is, 'who benefits from the commercialization of Juneteenth?' I’d definitely like to see more African American (and) more Black businesses benefit," Goler said. "The trend of commercialization, we risk the overshadowing of the historical context, and the ongoing struggle for racial equality that Juneteenth represents."

Singer hopes that companies that are selling Juneteenth products are also advocating for more inclusivity.

“What I'm arguing is that what we need to do is to use a day like Juneteenth as a launching pad to build a more just society,” he said. “It should not just be about the past, it has to be about the future.”

Goler hopes that the holiday will bring everyone together but also educate them about this important day in Black History.

"I think as we observe Juneteenth, it's important to focus on the education, reflection, the community engagement aspect and really ensure that the day remains of a pungent reminder of our continued and enduring fight for freedom and justice," he said.

In this study, we investigated the properties of exosomal miRNAs to identify potential biomarkers for liquid biopsy. We collected 956 exosomal and 956 non-exosomal miRNA sequences from RNALocate and miRBase to develop predictive models. Our initial analysis reveals that specific nucleotides are preferred at certain positions in miRNAs associated with exosomes. We employed an alignment-based approach, artificial intelligence (AI) models, and ensemble methods for predicting exosomal miRNAs. For the alignment-based approach, we used a motif-based method with MERCI and a similarity-based method with BLAST, achieving high precision but low coverage of about 29%. The AI models, developed using machine learning, deep learning techniques, and large language models, achieved a maximum AUC of 0.707 and an MCC of 0.268 on an independent dataset. Finally, our ensemble method, combining alignment-based and AI-based models, reached a maximum AUC of 0.73 and an MCC of 0.352 on an independent dataset. We have developed a web server, EmiRPred, to assist the scientific community in predicting and designing exosomal miRNAs and identifying associated motifs ( https://webs.iiitd.edu.in/raghava/emirpred/ ).
