Remember

Claire: It's suspended there to remind us before we pop the champagne and celebrate the New Year, to stop and reflect on the year that has gone by. To remember both our triumphs and our missteps - our promises made, and broken. The times we opened ourselves up to great adventures - or closed ourselves down, for fear of getting hurt. Because that's what New Year's is all about: getting another chance. A chance to forgive, to do better, to do more, to give more, to love more. And stop worrying about 'what if' and start embracing what would be. So when that ball drops at midnight - and it will drop - let's remember to be nice to each other, kind to each other. And not just tonight but all year long.

Hope

Sam: Sometimes it feels like there are so many things in this world we can't control. Earthquakes, floods, reality shows... But it's important to remember the things that we can. Like forgiveness, second chances, fresh starts... Because the one thing that turns the world from the longing place to a beautiful place... is love. Love and any of its forms. Love gives us hope... Hope for the New Year. That's what New Year's Eve is to me. Hope and a great party!

New Year's Eve follows several interconnected stories of people experiencing various problems on New Year's Eve.

Vice-President of the Times Square Alliance Claire Morgan is making the final arrangements for the ball drop with the help of her friend, police officer Brendan. Meanwhile, after being nearly run over by a car and denied a vacation, Ahern Records secretary Ingrid Withers quits her job and offers deliveryman Paul Doyle tickets for the Ahern Records Masquerade Ball if he helps her complete her New Year's resolutions before midnight, and he accepts.

Paul's older sister Kim Doyle is having trouble with her teenage daughter Hailey, who wants to spend New Year's Eve with her friends and her boyfriend Seth Anderson in Times Square, though Kim wants to spend the New Year with her after her divorce. Paul's best friend, comic book illustrator Randy, hates New Year's Eve as his girlfriend left him on a date, gets stuck in an elevator with Elise, an aspiring singer providing back-up for musician Daniel Jensen at his Times Square show. Jensen is also preparing to perform at the Ahern Records ball while attempting to rekindle his relationship with his ex-fiancée, Laura.

At a nearby hospital, Claire's father Stan Harris, in the final stages of cancer who refuses chemotherapy and wishes only to see the ball drop one last time, is kept company by Nurses Aimee and Mindy after his doctor reveals he will not last much longer. In the same hospital, a young couple (Griffin and Tess Byrne) are about to have their first child, and compete with another couple, James and Grace Schwab, for a bonus offered to the family of the first child born in the New Year.

Elsewhere, Sam Ahern, Jr., a businessman and son of the late founder Sam Ahern, Sr. of Ahern Records, attempts to go to the Ahern Records Ball to deliver an important speech. After his car malfunctions in nearby Connecticut, all the while wondering if he should reunite with a mysterious woman he met and fell in love with on the previous New Year's Eve. Failing to find a mechanic or tow truck, Sam is able to get a ride from a cheerful family in an RV.

Later that evening, one of the LED panels on the Times Square Ball malfunctions, jamming the ball and forcing Claire to call “Kominsky”, a disgruntled electrician whom the company had fired a few weeks prior. He repairs the ball before midnight, and, in gratitude, she leaves him in charge of the operation as she rushes to see the ball drop with her father, Stan. Meanwhile, Nurse Aimee has a video conference with her husband Chino, a soldier deployed in Afghanistan. Stan passes away just minutes after Claire snuck him up to the roof of the hospital to watch the ball drop, amid a chorus of "Auld Lang Syne", with Claire weeping beside him, holding his hand.

Paul helps Ingrid complete all the items on her list, and she gives him the tickets. They later say goodbye, but Paul decides to take her to the Ahern Records ball as his date. Meanwhile, Randy and Elise bond in the elevator as they share their lives and problems. Just as they are about to kiss, the elevator is repaired by the building superintendent and Elise rushes to Jensen's show. Randy notices she forgot her rubber bracelet and rushes to give it to her, still in pajamas. At Times Square, Jensen leaves midway through his show to return to the Ahern Ball to apologize to Laura, who takes him back and leaving with Sam's approval. With Jensen gone, Elise replaces him and attracts the attention of the crowd. She kisses Randy, and they start a romantic relationship.

Griffin and Tess have their baby and, although it is born first, they lie to allow James and Grace to have the $25,000 bonus after discovering they already have two other children to provide for. Meanwhile, after being forbidden from attending the celebration, Hailey runs away to Times Square, where she sees Seth being kissed by another girl, Lily, unaware that it was a kiss against his will. Heartbroken, she meets and is comforted by her mother. Kim finally realizes that she was too selfish for not allowing Hailey to spend the New Year with them. Seth finds them and apologizes, revealing Lily had stolen the kiss. Hailey forgives him and kisses him back. Her mother allows her to go to an after-party.

Kim then rushes to a restaurant to reunite with Sam, who had succeeded in delivering his speech. She is revealed to be the mysterious woman whom he met one year prior, and they finally share their names with each other. The film ends with Paul and Ingrid having fun at the Ahern Records ball party. As the credits roll, a series of bloopers and blunders are shared with the audience.

As the clock strikes midnight, let’s envision our lives as a blockbuster hit, filled with action, drama, and plenty of laughter.

On new year’s eve, the curtains close on the old year, leaving us with curiosity and excitement for the opening scene of the new one.

New year’s eve is like the climax of a suspenseful movie, as we eagerly anticipate the reveal of what the next year holds for us.

Just like in the movies, new year’s eve is a time to reflect on our character arcs, celebrate our growth, and set new goals for the upcoming year.

As the credits roll on the old year, we can’t help but feel grateful for the role it played in shaping our lives and preparing us for the next big blockbuster – the new year.

On new year’s eve, let’s make resolutions that are bolder than any movie plot, and let’s bring them to life throughout the year like never before.

New year’s eve reminds us that life is not a movie to be watched; it’s a movie to be lived, with our own scripts, characters, and plotlines.

Just like the best movie sequels, a new year is an opportunity to build upon the success of the previous year and take our lives to new heights.

As the clock strikes midnight and the year comes to an end, let’s leave behind the scenes that no longer serve us and embrace the new ones that await us.

On new year’s eve, let’s take a moment to appreciate all the moments that made us smile, laugh, and cry throughout the year, just like a good movie.

New year’s eve is a reminder that life is filled with unexpected plot twists, but with resilience, determination, and a touch of hope, we can overcome any challenge and create our own happy ending.

Just like a great movie, new year’s eve has the power to captivate, inspire, and leave us in awe of the magic that life has to offer.

Top 10 New Year’s Eve Movie Scenes of All Time

Get a compelling long read and must-have lifestyle tips in your inbox every sunday morning — great with coffee.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by the number of iconic movie scenes with New Year’s Eve as a backdrop. The night offers directors and screenwriters the rich dichotomy of celebration and sadness. The end of the year is the perfect opportunity for a movie or a character to make a dramatic change or pronouncement. The relationship between two characters can either end or begin anew in the midst of a sea of humanity, or above or apart from it.

I found well over 50 movies with iconic New Year’s Eve scenes in my search for a top 10. Whittling them down was not easy and I’m certain film aficionados will cry foul at the omission of classics like Holiday  with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant or An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, or the strangely wonderful Hudsucker Proxy  by the Coen Brothers or Strange Days  written by James Cameron and directed by Katherine Bigelow, or the never-ending array of romantic comedies like Sex and The City , About a Boy  and Bridget Jones’s Diary .

There are so many great movies and great scenes that I left off the top 10 list. You know it’s a tough cut when a movie entitled New Year’s Eve  by Gary Marshall doesn’t make the cut. Please make the case in the comment section for your favorites. My criteria was simple:

1. The NYE scene’s importance to the movie

2. Popularity of the movie

3. The iconic X factor of the scene and

4. If I could find a clip

So without further ado, here are the top 10 New Year’s Eve Movie Scenes of All Time.

1. When Harry Met Sally  (1989)

It is easily the greatest New Year’s Eve scene of all time. After a lifetime of being friends with benefits, Harry (Billy Crystal) finally professes his love to Sally (Meg Ryan) in Manhattan on New Year’s Eve. “It’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve,” he tells her. “I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” The classic party crashing, love-awakening scene that is the culmination of a classic movie in a classic setting.

2. The Godfather: Part II (1974)

You don’t want to get a kiss from a Corleone at Midnight in Havana. Michael (Al Pacino) has been trying to weed out the traitor in the family. Fredo (John Cazale) made a fatal slip of the tongue during some New Year’s Eve debauchery that exposed himself as the rat. At midnight came, so too did the kiss of death from Michael when he grabs Fredo’s face, kisses him on the lips and says, “I know it was you Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart.”

3. The Gold Rush  (1925)

Charlie Chaplin falls in love with a dance-hall girl (Georgia Hale). She accepts his invitation to New Year’s Eve dinner, but alas, she never intended to show up. That sets up a fantasy sequence by Chaplain when he imagines a room full of dinner guests and entertains them with the dinner roll dance that he improvised into immortality. You’ll remember that Johnny Depp paid homage to the scene in “Benny and Joon.”

4. Poseidon Adventure (1972)

Should auld acquaintance be forgot and swept away by a rogue tidal wave. It is the most memorable New Year’s Eve party of all time, mainly because of the death, destruction and Gene Hackman using a Christmas tree to lead an all-star cast to survival. Or at least most of them — Leslie Nielsen wasn’t so lucky. The very serious captain went down with the ship only to be resurrected as a great comedic actor.

5. Trading Places (1983)

Ah, the Philadelphia-based movie with Eddie Murphy, Dan Akroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis ended with a ride on a New Year’s Eve party train to Manhattan. All of the main players took on alternate identities to fool a private detective who was after them. The scene is memorable for beef jerky, cleavage and a man in a gorilla suit being raped by a Gorilla. That’s right, a man is raped by a gorilla and it was witnessed by now Senator Al Franken. Merry New Year!

6. The Apartment  (1960)

“Ring out the New Year, ring in the new, ring-a-ding-ding,” Shirley MacLaine says to no one in particular at a New Year’s Eve party. She then leaves the party and her married boyfriend to run to Jack Lemmon with a freshly opened and frothing champagne bottle (calling Dr. Freud). Lemmon declares his undying love for her and is met with the now immortal line, “Shut up and deal.” End scene. Credit roll. Perfect.

7. Holiday Inn (1942)

The movie is best remembered for introducing the world to the best selling song of all time, “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby. But the New Year’s Eve dance by co-star Fred Astaire, whose character showed up to the party drunk, is one of the best New Year’s Eve scenes of all time for its choreography of acting and dance. Dancing with the Stars fans, enjoy, The Drunk Dance with Fred Astaire .

8. Boogie Nights ( 1997)

Nothing brings down a New Year’s Eve party more than a murder-suicide. The great William H. Macy plays Little Bill, an assistant director of porn films, who is looking for his porn star wife at a New Year’s Eve party. When he finds her once again having sex with another man, the relationship is over. The music, the continuous shots and the little smile on Macy’s face before he pulls the trigger makes this scene a New Year’s Eve classic.

9. Radio Days (1987)

“Only creeps and crazy people go out on New Year’s Eve,” one in a spray of great lines in the New Year’s Eve scene that contrasts the two New Yorks, Manhattan, with the rich and famous, and Rockaway, Queens, with Woody Allen’s beautiful tribute to his childhood. The scene and the movie end on a Times Square rooftop, where partygoers gather to ring in 1944. Allen delivers the closing narration about the voices of his past and finishes with a line that is true for us all, “Although, the truth is, with the passing of every New Year’s Eve, those voices do seem to grow dimmer and dimmer.”

10. Sunset Boulevard (1950)

I can’t ignore 11 Oscar Nominations. Another Billy Wilder classic, the film stars Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, an aging movie star, who sees failed screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) as her way back to stardom. Desmond lives in a world of delusion and invites Gillis to a New Year’s Eve party that doesn’t turn out to be much of a party. The movie ends with Desmond killing Gillis and when the news cameras show up at her home, she imagines she is on the set of a Cecil B. DeMille movie starring her. The movie ends with the line that lives in Hollywood infamy, “Alright, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.”

Movie Review

“Some people swear there’s no beauty left in the world, no magic,” Claire Morgan announces as New Year’s Eve begins, “Then how do you explain the entire world coming together on one night to celebrate the hope of a new year?” And, indeed, New Year’s Eve is all about hope—mostly of the relational kind.

The exception, actually, might be Claire herself. The vice president of Times Square Alliance (the organization responsible for making sure a certain legendary, lit-up ball comes down precisely at midnight) isn’t worried about having someone to smooch at midnight. No, she’s worried about making sure her first stint as the person responsible for dropping the ball goes off without a hitch. And it is all going swimmingly … right up until the moment the ball comes to a screeching halt on the way up its pole.

Meanwhile, bike courier Paul wants to go to the biggest party of the night at Ahern Records. It’s an impossible wish, except that his last delivery of the day goes to Ingrid, a mousy middle-aged secretary at that very company. She has at her disposal four tickets to the party that she doesn’t really want. What Ingrid does want is to find some purpose in life after a near-miss with a car … purpose that’s captured on her list of New Year’s resolutions. So she makes Paul a deal: If he helps her fulfill her list by midnight, the tickets are his.

Oh, you want to know what’s on the list? Well, easy, simple stuff, really, like … “go to Bali,” “save a life” and “be amazed.”

Now, in most movies, that would be enough fodder for maybe even three hours of storytelling. But in Garry Marshall’s plot-hungry hands that’s just one of many hope-filled tales.

There’s also …

… pop idol Daniel Jensen’s determination to win back the heart of a top-flight caterer named Laura after ditching her the year before;

… backup singer Elise’s thrilling shot at stardom as a part of Jensen’s band—until she gets stuck in her apartment elevator with a cynical, pajama-wearing, New Year’s Eve-hating comic book artist named Randy;

… a terminally ill older man named Stan who just wants his kind nurse, Aimee, to take him to the roof of the hospital so he can watch the ball drop;

… a 15-year-old named Hailey who hopes to rendezvous with a cute boy named Seth at Times Square … if only her clingy mother, Kim, will let her go;

… and two pregnant couples (Tess and Griffin, James and Grace), who hope to claim $25,000 for being the first to deliver a baby in the new year.

Finally, there’s Sam. Stranded in Connecticut after a car wreck, Sam needs to get back to the Big Apple to deliver an important speech … and maybe, just maybe, reconnect with a woman who kissed him last year and told him to meet her at the same spot if he was still interested one year later.

Oh, and did I mention that Ryan Seacrest shows up too? He’s hoping his live New Year’s Eve show will be as good as Dick Clark’s always were.

Positive Elements

If there’s one thing almost everyone needs from time to time, it’s a fresh start, a second chance at pursuing what’s most important in life. For some people in this film, like dowdy Ingrid, that means taking risks for the first time ever. For others, like Jensen, it means admitting that you’ve made some pretty massive blunders. Still others, like hardhearted Randy, begin to realize that hardheartedness isn’t something that just happens to you. Rather, it’s a choice.

Throughout each of the intertwined stories, the consistent message is this: It’s not too late to start over or to start for the very first time … even when it looks as if failure is already destined to rule the day.

Claire seizes her moment when she’s forced to go on TV and talk about why the ball has stopped and whether it will be able to be moved any farther up … or down by midnight. She tells people the frozen ball offers a chance to reflect on the year that’s gone by, to remember what really matters most: forgiveness, love and making the world a better place. Letting go of the previous 12 months’ failures and embracing the possibilities of the new year. It’s a new chance, she says, to commit to kindness—not just on New Year’s Eve, but all year long.

Though no one ever uses the word grace , that’s really the point. There’s grace to get up, grace to try again, grace to strive for a better outcome than the ones we’ve known in the past.

Accordingly, we get lots of little glimpses of grace in action. When Hailey sneaks out her bedroom window and defies her mom by going to Times Square, her very un-positive actions are met with both consequences and love. A former ladies’ man realizes that he wants a real relationship, not the life of empty sex he’s apparently had up to that point. A kind bike courier realizes he can creatively help someone’s dreams come true. A couple “competing” fiercely for the prize of delivering the year’s first baby realizes that their rivals need the money more than they do. An old man longs to apologize for a lifetime of self-centered choices as he stands on the brink of death.

Spiritual Elements

Tess and Griffin’s doctor, who’s named in the credits as “Spiritual Dr. Morriset,” dispenses mysticism-tinged childbirth counsel. We hear mentions of yoga, “hypno-birth” and seeing with our “third eye.”

Sexual Content

Sam is the best man at a friend’s wedding, and the couple talks about how the groom’s casual sex days are over while Sam’s are not. Two admiring women sidle up to Sam at a party, one suggesting she wants to be the woman behind him, the other adding she wants to be the woman in front. (He ultimately brushes off their threesome-minded advances to pursue the woman he met the year before.) Ava practically throws herself at Jensen. She talks about wanting to make love to him and flirts suggestively and repeatedly. Outtakes show Elise leaving Randy’s apartment, with him following her out sans shirt saying things were just getting hot.

We hear a guy say, “Me and my girl are gonna crush a 12-pack and watch porn.” Laura talks of having “years of make-up sex” with Jensen. When Randy and Elise get out of the elevator they’re trapped in, the building supervisor is convinced they had sex (they didn’t) and says he plans to watch the elevator’s video tape. A guy is asked if he “boinked” a particular woman.

Women sport tight dresses or outfits that display cleavage, especially Laura’s randy sous chef, Ava. In a misguided attempt to convince her mother of her maturity, Hailey lifts up her shirt in public, very briefly revealing a bra and exclaiming, “This isn’t a training bra.” Her shocked mother retorts, “And this isn’t Girls Gone Wild .” Hailey and the boy she’s crushing on, Seth, eventually kiss (actress Abigail Breslin’s first onscreen smooch). Likewise, many of the film’s couples share stroke-of-midnight kisses.

Violent Content

Absentmindedly wandering into an intersection, Ingrid is nearly hit by a car; she falls backward into a pile of garbage. Sam drives off the road, resulting in a fender bender. Laura slaps Jensen in the face twice. There’s a moment of peril when the giant ball in Times Square starts ascending with a worker still on top.

Crude or Profane Language

One fully uttered f-word and another partially spoken. Likewise, we hear one s-word (in an outtake during the credits), and another abbreviated use. There are three or four uses each of “a‑‑” and “h‑‑‑”; one use each of “p‑‑‑” and “b‑‑ch.” Someone uses the vulgar acronym “S.O.L.,” which he then says means “Something Out of Luck,” because, he insists, “I don’t swear.” The tow truck driver warns Sam not to say “h‑‑‑” when talking to a pastor.

Drug and Alcohol Content

Lots of folks are shown in bars or at parties with champagne or other alcoholic beverages in hand, ready to toast the new year. An obviously drunken man repeatedly (and accidentally) nods forward into Kim’s lap as she sits on the bar.

Other Negative Elements

Several anatomy-related jokes are connected to Tess’ impending delivery. Among other things, she says that for $25,000, someone could “put a camera in my woohoo, and it would be worth it.” And at the onset of both women’s labor, a nurse jokes, “Ladies, may the best vajajay win.” Tess and Griffin offer their doctor 70% of the prize money if she’ll perform a C-section on Tess; the doctor refuses (and threatens to give Griffin a rectal exam). Tess vomits into a bucket.

According to unapologetically sentimental director Garry Marshall, New Year’s Eve—the holiday—offers “the perfect opportunity to take stock of things, to think about the mistakes of the past year and about how maybe you can do better. [It’s] a time to be thankful for what you have. But it’s also a fun, exciting, wonderful time, full of anticipation—and yes, some craziness. Mostly, it’s about hope, when everything you want seems possible again, if you’re willing to take another chance.”

That statement exactly matches New Year’s Eve —the movie—which dives headfirst into those optimistic ideals. Sure, it’s a sappy and sometimes sudsy affair, full of predictably happy endings. But Marshall’s buoyant take is a refreshing contrast to the many dark and cynical attitudes on “reality” that Hollywood has been enamored of in the last decade or so.

And while the film never really deals with what’s essentially a message of grace in any substantive spiritual sense, the stories Marshall has woven together still offer a secular echo of the truth that God, too, is in the business of second chances and fresh starts.

The only paper cuts this confetti inflict is occasionally bawdy humor, some gratuitous cleavage shots and a couple of harsh profanities—no doubt tossed in to ensure the film secured the slightly edgier and therefore more “marketable” PG-13 rating. For comparison’s sake, think of New Year’s Eve as a 2-hour TV sitcom: In its 117 minutes, it contains about the same amount of negative content that the majority of prime-time shows routinely pack into 22. That doesn’t make it OK, but it does help put it in an understandable box. I should also note that Marshall has admirably cleaned things up a bit compared to his last holiday-themed romantic ensemble, 2010’s Valentine’s Day .

Quotes

Claire Morgan : And as you all can see, the ball has stopped half way to its perch. it's suspended there to remind us before we pop the champagne and celebrate the new year, to stop, and reflect on the year that has gone by, to remember both our triumphs and our missteps, our promises made and broken, the times we opened ourselves up to great adventures... or closed ourselves down for fear of getting hurt, because that's what new year's all about , getting another chance, a chance to forgive. to do better, to do more, to give more, to love more, and to stop worrying about what if... and start embracing what will be. so when that ball drops at midnight, and it will drop, let's remember to be nice to each other, kind to each other, and not just tonight but all year long.

Claire Morgan : [voice over, opening lines]  Some people swear there's no beauty left in the world, no magic. Then, how do you explain the entire world coming together on one night to celebrate the hope of a new year?
