The Simple Homeschooler

15+ Letter V Worksheets: Free & Easy Print!

Looking for some free letter V worksheets for your kindergarten kids or preschool students?

Well, I’m back with another letter of the week pack!

Last week we dove into the letter U , and this week we are going to be doing all things letter V!

These printable worksheets are full of coloring pages, letter recognition worksheets, a printable book, a play dough mat, and more educational activities!

They will fit into any and all lesson plans as you teach the letters of the alphabet to your younger children.

I include easy step-by-step instructions for teaching each of the pages. You may think that it is a cut-and-dry thing to teach, but there are always twists and turns when teaching little ones.

At the bottom of this post, you will find an instant download page for all the alphabet worksheets.

Check Out Your Amazing Letter V Worksheet Printable Pack!

The first thing you will find is an awesome letter V coloring page!

This fun coloring page is perfect for teaching the sound of the letter v.

See if your student can correctly identify each of the images. No worries, if you have to jump in and help.

Your student should see a volcano, volleyball, vulture, van, violin, vase, and Valentine card.

Do they hear the same sound repeated over and over again?

Can they guess what makes the V sound?

Letter V Worksheet 2

This is the first time I’ve included a playdough mat in my alphabet worksheets, and I’m kind of obsessed with it!

It is such a fun, hands-on approach to introduce the letter V before diving into a tracing worksheet.

Work with your student to roll playdough out into a “rope” and fill in the blank letter V.

Point out to your early learners that the V has a point at the bottom, which is what makes it different from the letter U.

****That will be an important distinction to remember as they work on letter identification skills later in the packet!

Another activity you could do is glue popsicle sticks to the mat and decorate them!

Thirdly, you can use do-a-dot markers to “trace” the V shape.

Letter V Worksheet 3

Alrighty, now it’s time for the dotted lines!

Help your younger kids follow the numbers and trace the uppercase V. As with all the letters of the English alphabet, be sure to gently stress the importance of stroke order.

Also encourage them to really focus on making that point at the bottom.

Being intentional about this will help them so much to avoid making a sloppy upper case letter V that really looks like a U.

Letter V Worksheet 4

This page looks familiar, right?!

Well, the lowercase letter v looks a lot like the uppercase version.

Your child might struggle a little with the fine motor skills to make this small letter. Encourage all progress and just make sure they understand that this v needs a sharp point.

It is a lot like the letter k in that way. Sharp angles make all the difference with handwriting.

As the student moves from tracing letter v to writing letter v, allow for different levels of difficulty. Some kids will transition easily, but others will be overwhelmed by the blank lines.

Encourage the struggling student to only make 3-4 good letters /v/s on each line. At this stage, quality does trump quantity.

Letter V Worksheet 5

These do-a-dot pages a great way to work on letter identification.

On this sheet it seems that all the letters have spilled out of the v-v-vase.

Help your child hunt for the uppercase letter /V/ with her do-a-dot marker.

You can also use crayons, markers, pieces of construction paper or whatever you have on hand to make a polka dot!

Letter V Worksheet 6

It seems a volcano has exploded lava and letters!

Can your child go through all the lowercase letters to find the lowercase v?

Letter V Worksheet 7

This fun coloring page is the perfect way to see if your child is retaining the letter v sound.

Go through each image and make sure they understand what each one is.

They should color van, vase, vulture, volcano, volleyball, vacuum, and vest.

Letter V Worksheet 8

This kindergarten worksheet is a break from tracing and a chance to be creative! There is no answer key and many different “right answers.”

Your kid will likely dive right in with this drawing activity, but if not, challenge them with a few riddles!

My favorite kid of ice cream is white. It’s…v-v-vanilla!

If a snake is poisonous, that means it has…v-v-venom!

When my dog is sick, I take it to the…v-v-vet!

As always, your child shouldn’t stress about their art skills. Tell them that just need to make their best effort. Professional artist-level skills are not required.

Letter V Worksheet 9

Kids always love making these fun alphabet books!

Older children may be able to complete it in one day, but most kids at the kindergarten/preschool level will need to do this a bit at a time over several days to do their best work.

Two staples should hold it together with no problem.

Keep in mind that some of these might be new vocabulary words for young students. So be prepared to explain the less commonly used words.

Letter V Worksheet 15

Yep, there’s another fun coloring picture! Children of all ages will enjoy coloring Victor the Vulture!

For an added touch, make it a glue activity by gluing googly eyes on the bird. This will create a fun, silly effect for your young learners.

If you have some scraps of fabric and a creative streak, you could also glue a little v-v-vest onto him!

Letter V Worksheet 16

Tracing pages are usually not the favorite of most kids, but it is such helpful review and extra practice for little hands.

This sheet is printed large enough that they should not struggle too much with the tracing.

If your child is still a little shaky with the letter sound – which would be understandable now that we’re towards the end of the alphabet – have them name each of the pictures while stressing the first sound.

For example, v-v-violin, v-v-vest, v-v-vase. You could also have your child hold their hands in a “v-shape” while saying each word.

Letter V Worksheet 17

This is the last of my printable alphabet worksheets for letter v.

It gives a nice review of the concepts that we have covered.

Your kindergarten children or 1st grade students can color in the van and then practice tracing the capital letter and lower case letter v.

There is a chance to draw something that starts with /v/. Be ready with another riddle for them!

Lastly, your child can enjoy the letter mazes and more handwriting practice.

And that’s a wrap for the alphabet letter V!

Tips for Teaching Letter V to Preschoolers & Kindergarteners

The nice thing about the letter v is that it does not have a ton of sounds associated with it like other letters of the alphabet do. The sound of v is /v/ as in vacation, vacuum, and vet.

When spoken, the /v/ sound is formed in the mouth in the same way that the /f/ sound is formed, the only difference is, that the /v/ sound is voiced and the /f/ is not (its just air).

With that being said, it might be a helpful exercise to practice flipping between the /v/ and /f/ sound to hear and feel the difference between voiced and unvoiced.

Another thing to keep in mind for younger children, is visual letter confusion OR letter reversal . This confusion is very common as kids are learning their alphabet, but with a little bit of practice, can easily be straightened out. The letter V can sometimes be confused with the letter U. (Try different  strategies for learning letters and sounds  to help with these common mixups.)

Teaching Letter Vv

Are you looking for letter Vv activities to use with your preschooler or kindergartner? Maybe you’re a classroom teacher browsing for more ideas.

Research tells us that a direct, explicit approach to teaching the alphabet is more effective than indirect teaching. Enjoy the crafts, art ideas, and book list, but know that using a scripted routine like the one below is the most efficient way to teach letters and sounds. Make it your own!

How to introduce letter Vv

  • Say words that begin with Vv: Say each word after me. (Emphasize the /v/ at the beginning of each word as you say it.) Vase. Van. Violin. Vole. What sound do you hear at the beginning of each word? The sound is /v/.
  • Talk about what your mouth is doing as you say the sound: Look at what my mouth is doing as I say /v/. Now you try. What are teeth and lips doing when you say /v/? Put your hand on your throat as you say /v/. Is it a quiet or noisy sound? (noisy)
  • Introduce the letter on a flash card: (Hold up the letter V card in uppercase or lowercase.) This is the letter V. When we see this card, we say “V spells /v/.” Your turn. (Students: “V spells /v/.”)

How to practice writing uppercase letter V

  • Sky-write the letter: To make the letter V, we start at the top. Then we slant down and up. Watch me put my hand in the air and write a V in the sky. I start at the top. I slant down and up. Now you try. Start at the top. Slant down and up.
  • Have students finger-write the letter:  Make a V by moving your finger on the table. Start at the top. Slant down and up. (Other options: sand or salt tray, shaving cream, etc.) Now do the same thing while saying “V spells /v/.” Remember to underline the V when you say /v/. (Practice multiple times.)

How to practice writing lowercase letter v

  • Sky-write the letter: To make the letter v, we start in the middle. Then we slant down and up. Watch me put my hand in the air and write a v in the sky. I slant down and up. Now you try. Put your finger in the air. Start in the middle. Slant down and up.
  • Have students finger-write the letter:  Make a v by moving your finger on the table. Start in the middle. Slant down and up. (Other options: sand or salt tray, shaving cream, etc.) Now do the same thing while saying “v spells /v/.” Remember to underline the v when you say /v/. (Practice multiple times.)

Teaching preschoolers the letter V can be really fun, and a great way to foster their early literacy skills and fine-motor skills.

how to teach letter v to preschool kindergarten

Letter V is For

Letter sounds are an important part of phonemic awareness, which is essential for early reading success.

The letter V is an easier letter of the alphabet to sound out.

The “vivid” letter v makes only ONE sound.

To begin teaching your child to make the sound, encourage them to place the tips of their top teeth on the outside of their lower lip and push out a puff of air.

You can help your preschooler learn how to make the /v/ sound by using these word examples:

Likewise you can help your preschooler make connections between the letter V and words that begin with this specific letter by pointing out items in their environment that start with the letter V or asking them questions about objects.

free letter v worksheet letter sounds

One of the benefits of the letter v is the lower case v and the uppercase v are nearly identical (except for their size).

This makes it easier for preschoolers to recognize and write the letter.

To practice writing the letter V have your child trace a large uppercase V as well as lowercase letter v.

As they become more comfortable, let them try to write it on their own using smaller line sizes.

You can also use the free alphabet printables on this page for creative activities like making letter V art or decorating the letter with stickers or other decorations.

free letter v worksheet fine motor skills

Whether your preschooler or kindergarten kids are tracing lowercase letters or uppercase letters, these tracing worksheets will keep them engaged in learning the letter V.

This letter has only two lines and no curves, making it simpler to draw than other letters.

My own preschoolers love the fun coloring pages in this workbook.

They love learning how to recognize this letter and find the letter v in the world around them.

If you’re wanting to help your child recognize the letter v in a fun way, then these coloring pages are perfect.

free letter v worksheet uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet

Each page is filled with graphics of things that start with this letter including vultures, volcanos and more.

Your children can even practice writing the letter v within the coloring sheet as well!

One of the best things I did for my preschooler was print the dotted letter v worksheet on construction paper and laminate it.

This way, we could keep reusing the same page and use everyday items to make fun letter v crafts.

Ignite your early learners curiosity and spark their creativity by engaging them in any of these hands-on activities listed below!

  • Place pom poms in the center of a lowercase v
  • Use play dough and shape inside the dotted lines
  • Color the capital letter V brown and create a volcano

One glue activity you can also make with the fun letter v is cut out flowers and place them inside the “vase”.

You can use a lower case letter v for this craft and a capital letter v for the volcano craft to reinforce the difference between the lower case and upper case letter v.

While you’re considering what type of activities to try, I recommend reading this fine motor skills checklist to keep in mind for your child’s developmental stage.

Letter V Preschool Activities

  • Use these free vehicle pattern block printables to build different types of vehicles and work on fine motor skills.
  • Introduce various vegetables of different colors and types so children can sort them by characteristics. Try this Farmer’s Market sorting set by Learning Resources.
  • Have a sorting activity where children categorize vegetables based on their initial letter sound.
  • Create a volcano-themed art project. Provide materials like paper, glue, and colored tissue paper to make a vibrant volcano. Try this volcano science experiment , too!
  • Use green paint to create vine-like patterns on paper. Children can dip their fingers or paintbrushes in paint and make winding vines across the paper.
  • Go on a “V” word hunt around your house or neighborhood. Encourage children to find and collect items that start with the letter “V.”
  • Provide plain vests or large paper cutouts of vests. Let children decorate their vests using various materials such as markers, stickers, and cut-out shapes.
  • Fill clear containers with water and add a few drops of different food coloring. Place a white flower (such as a carnation) in the water and observe how the color travels up the stem, creating a “vanishing” effect.
  • Prepare cut-out letter “V” shapes from magazines or colored paper. Have children create collages using these cut-outs, gluing them onto a larger sheet of paper.
  • Fill a sensory bin with items that start with “V” (e.g., velvet, vinyl, vegetables). Let children explore and feel the different textures.
  • Create a vulture craft using a paper plate as the body and construction paper for the wings and beak. Add googly eyes for a fun touch.
  • Cut vegetables such as celery, bell peppers, and okra in half and use them as stamps. Dip them in paint and let the children create colorful prints on paper, similar to this apple stamp painting .
  • Create a word wall dedicated to “V” words. Add pictures and words related to the letter “V” to expand the children’s vocabulary.
  • Let your child gather his or her toy vehicles (cars, trucks, airplanes). Have a “Vehicle Parade” where they can line up and march around with their favorites.
  • Introduce the concept of Venn diagrams using circles. Have pictures or cards representing items starting with “V” and guide children in sorting them based on commonalities and differences.
  • Take a virtual field trip to an aquarium or zoo. Explore and discuss various animals whose names start with the letter “V,” such as vultures or vervet monkeys.
  • Incorporate the letter “V” into a Valentine’s Day craft . Create heart-shaped cards or crafts with “V” words like “Valentine” or “Love.”
  • Model the concept of vital organs using playdough . Create simple shapes representing the heart, lungs, and other organs that are essential for life.
  • Engage in vocal play by exploring various sounds and pitches. Use musical instruments or simply experiment with the pitch of their voices to distinguish between high and low sounds.
  • Provide children with small viewfinders or cut a “V” shape in a piece of cardboard. Go on a nature hunt and encourage them to look for items in the environment that fit within the “V.”
  • Set up a pretend kitchen and let children “cook” vegetable soup using plastic or wooden vegetables . This hands-on activity combines imaginative play with letter “V” learning.
  • Create a catchy song that emphasizes vowel sounds, including the letter “V.” Incorporate simple dance moves or hand gestures to make it a fun and interactive learning experience.
  • Provide a variety of vibrant colored materials and encourage children to create an art project focusing on vivid colors that start with the letter “V.”
  • Set up a veterinary clinic pretend play area with stuffed animals. Children can play the role of veterinarians, caring for their “patients” and learning about the responsibilities of vets.
  • Use a balloon as a “volleyball” and encourage children to practice hitting it back and forth. This activity helps with hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills.
  • Let children create Viking helmets using paper, markers, and other craft materials. Discuss a little about Vikings and their association with the letter “V.”
  • Focus on vowel recognition by hiding objects that start with different vowels around the room. Children can go on a scavenger hunt , finding items that match each vowel sound.
  • Explore the concept of vibrations by using different items (such as rubber bands, tuning forks, or strings) to create sounds. Discuss how vibrations are related to sound.
  • See if you can schedule a tour of the local vet hospital for a fun field trip. The veterinarian can share information about their job, show some basic tools they use, and discuss how they care for animals.
  • Create a mini volcano using baking soda, vinegar, and red food coloring. Watch the “volcano” erupt and discuss the science behind it. Check out our volcano science experiment here.
  • Introduce a variety of vegetables for a tasting session. Discuss their colors, textures, and flavors.
  • Create a memory game with cards featuring pictures and words that start with the letter “V.” Children can take turns flipping cards and matching pairs.
  • Make vulture feather crafts using real or craft feathers. Discuss the characteristics of vultures and how they use their feathers.
  • Teach the concepts of vertical and horizontal by having children create art using lines in different directions.
  • Provide a variety of objects and have children sort them based on visual characteristics, emphasizing discrimination between similar-looking items.
