టాలీవుడ్‌లో క్రైమ్, థ్రిల్లర్ చిత్రాలకు ఎప్పుడూ ఆదరణ ఉంటుంది. మంచి కంటెంట్‌తో వచ్చిన చిత్రాలు మంచి విజయాన్ని అందుకొన్న దాఖలాలు ఉన్నాయి. సరైన ప్రేమ కథకు మంచి థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ జోడిస్తే.. ప్రేక్షకులు పొందే అనుభూతి వేరే లెవెల్‌లో ఉంటుంది. అలాంటి కోవలో వచ్చిన చిత్రమే ఐరావతం మూవీ. కొత్త నటీనటులతో, దర్శకుడితో వచ్చిన ఐరావతం చిత్రం ప్రేక్షకులను ఏ మేరకు మెప్పించిందనే విషయాన్ని తెలుసుకొందాం..

బ్యూటీషియన్‌గా పనిచేసే శ్లోక (తన్వీ నేగి), చిక్కు (అమర్ దీప్ చౌదరీ) మధ్య అఫైర్ ఉంటుంది. తన ప్రియురాలు శ్లోక బర్త్ డే రోజున ఓ వైట్ కెమెరాను చిక్కు బహుమతిగా ఇస్తాడు. ప్రియుడు ఇచ్చిన కెమెరాతో తన వీడియోను తీసుకొంటుంది.

అయితే కెమెరాతో తీసుకొన్న వీడియో తర్వాత శ్లోక జీవితంలో ఎలాంటి సంఘటనలు చోటు చేసుకొన్నాయి. ఈ కథలో ప్రిన్సీ అనే అమ్మాయి ఎవరు? శ్లోకకు ప్రిన్సీ జీవితం గురించి ఎలా తెలిసింది. ఈ కథలో మాయా (ఏస్తెర్) ఎవరు? శ్లోక, ప్రిన్సీలో ఎవరో ఒకరు చనిపోతారని మాయ ఎందుకు చెప్పింది? శ్లోక, ప్రిన్సీని చంపాల్సిన అవసరం ఎవరికి ఉంది? శ్లోక, ప్రిన్సీ ప్రాణాలకు సైకో కిల్లర్ వల్ల ఎందుకు ముప్పు ఏర్పడింది? ఇంతకు ఈ కథలో సన్నీ (అరుణ్ జాన్) ఎవరు? చివరకు శ్లోక, ప్రిన్సీలకు ఎలాంటి పరిస్థితి ఎదురైంది? వారు ఈ ముప్పును బయటపడ్డారా అనే ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానమే ఐరావతం.

శ్లోక, చిక్కు మధ్య ప్రేమ కథతో ఫీల్‌గుడ్ నోట్‌తో కథ మొదలవుతుంది. ఎప్పుడైతే వైట్ కెమెరా గిఫ్టుగా ఇస్తాడో అప్పుడే అసలు కథ మొదలవుతుంది. ఆ తర్వాత వచ్చే ట్విస్టులు, సన్నివేశాలు కొత్త అనుభూతిని పంచుతూ కథ అనేక మలుపులు తిరుగుతుంది. పక్కా స్క్రిప్టుతో కథను నడిపించిన విధానం సినిమాపై ప్రేక్షకుడి పట్టు బిగించేలా చేస్తుంది. అక్రమ సంబంధాలు పెట్టుకొంటే ఎలాంటి సమస్యలు ఎదురువుతాయి అనే మెసేజ్‌తో దర్శకుడు సుహాస్ మంచి ట్రీట్‌మెంట్‌తో సినిమాను అందించాడు.

తెలుగు బుల్లితెరపై అత్యంత ప్రేక్షకాదరణ పొందిన జానకి కలగనలేదు సీరియల్ ఫేమ్ అమర్ దీప్ చౌదరీ ఐరావతం చిత్రంలో హీరోగా నటించాడు. సిల్వర్ స్క్రిన్‌కు కొత్తైనప్పటికి.. ఫీల్‌గుడ్ ఫెర్ఫార్మెన్స్‌తో ఆకట్టుకొన్నాడు. చిక్కు పాత్రలో అమర్ దీప్ బాయ్ నెక్ట్స్ డోర్ క్యారెక్టర్‌లో ఆకట్టుకొన్నాడు.

ఇక శ్లోకగా నటించిన తన్వీ నేగి ఈ సినిమాలో కీలకమైన పాత్రను పోషించడమే కాకుండా గ్లామర్‌పరంగా, నటన పరంగా మంచి మార్కులే కొట్టేసింది. మాయగా ఎస్తేర్, అరున్ జాను, ఇతర నటీనటులు తమ పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు ఆకట్టుకొన్నారు. ఈ చిత్రంలో సప్తగిరి పాత్ర కొసమెరుపుగా ఉంటుంది. చర్చి ఫాదర్ క్యారెక్టర్‌లో కనిపించి మంచి హాస్యాన్ని పంచేందుకు ప్రయత్నించారు.

దర్శకుడు సుహాస్ మేరా లవ్, క్రైమ్, థ్రిల్లర్ అంశాలను మేలవించి ఐరావతాన్ని సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్‌గా మార్చాడు. ట్విస్టులు, స్క్రీన్ ప్లేతో కథను నడిపిన విధానం తన టాలెంట్‌కు అద్దం పెట్టింది. పక్కా స్క్రిప్టుతో అద్యంతం వినోదాన్ని అందించడంలో సక్సెస్ అయ్యాడు.

సాంకేతిక విభాగాల విషయానికి వస్తే.. కార్తీక్ కడగండ్ల మ్యూజిక్ ప్రత్యేక ఆకర్షణ. బ్యాక్‌గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్‌తో ఆకట్టుకొన్నాడు. సస్పెన్స్, థ్రిల్లర్, క్రైమ్ సినిమాకు కావాల్సిన మ్యూజిక్‌ను అందించడంలో సఫలమయ్యాడు. ఈ సినిమాకు మరో ఆకర్షణ ఆర్కే వల్లెపు సినిమాటోగ్రఫి. సన్నివేశాల చిత్రీకరణ, లైటింగ్ బాగుంది. సురేష్ దుర్గం ఎడిటింగ్ బాగుంది.

నిర్మాతలు రాంకీ పలగని, లలిత కుమారి, బాలయ్య చౌదరి పాటించిన నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి. కథను ఎంచుకొన్న తీరు సినిమాపై వారికి ఉన్న అభిరుచిని తెలియజేసింది. కథను ఎలివేట్ చేయడానికి ఎలాంటి రాజీ పడలేదనే విషయం స్క్రీన్ మీద ప్రతీ ఫ్రేమ్ తెలియజేసింది.

ఫైనల్‌గా ఐరావతం ఓ మంచి అనుభూతిని పంచే సస్పెన్స్, క్రైమ్, థ్రిల్లర్. క్రైమ్, థ్రిల్లర్ సినిమాలను ఇష్టపడే వారికి ఈ సినిమా తప్పకుండా నచ్చుతుంది. విభిన్నమైన, విలక్షణతో కూడిన సినిమాలను ఆదరించే వారికి వీకెండ్‌లో ఐరావతం చక్కటి ఆప్షన్. ఎలాంటి అంచనాలు లేకుండా వెళితే.. ఐరావతం ఎక్కడా మిమ్మల్ని నిరుత్సాహానికి గురిచేయదు.

కథ (Iravatham Story) : శ్లోక (తన్వి నేగి) బ్యూటీషియన్. తాను పని చేసే బ్యూటీ పార్లర్ యజమాని కనకం ఆంటీ కుమారుడు (అమర్‌దీప్ చౌదరి)తో ఆమె ప్రేమలో ఉంటుంది. శ్లోక పుట్టినరోజుకు ఒక కెమెరా గిఫ్ట్ ఇస్తాడు. అందులో వీడియో రికార్డ్ చేసి చూస్తే... శ్లోక బదులు అచ్చంగా ఆమె పోలికలతో ఉన్న ప్రిన్సి వీడియో ప్లే అవుతాయి. ఎందుకలా జరుగుతోంది? శ్లోక, ప్రిన్సిలో ఎవరో ఒకరు మరణిస్తారని చెప్పిన ఫేస్ రీడర్ మాయ (ఎస్తేర్) ఎవరు? నగరంలో వరుస హత్యలతో కలకలం సృష్టిస్తున్న సైకో కిల్లర్ ఎవరు? శ్లోక మీద ఎటాక్ చేసిందెవరు? అనేది సినిమా చూసి తెలుసుకోవాలి. 

విశ్లేషణ (Iravatham Telugu Review) : 'విడిపోదామనే ఆడవాళ్ళ మాటకు బెంగపడొద్దు, కృంగిపోవద్దు. కలిసుందామని ముందుకు వచ్చే వాళ్ళ మాట పూర్తిగా నమ్మేయవద్దు' - తల్లి తమను విడిచి వెళ్ళిపోయిందని ఓ కుమారుడు బాధ పడుతుంటే... అతడికి తండ్రి చెప్పే మాట. ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్‌లో వస్తుంది. ఆ మాటల్లో అర్థమే లేదు. అలాగే, సినిమాలో కూడా! భార్య వదిలివెళ్ళిన బాధలో ఉన్న భర్త ఆత్మహత్య చేసుకుంటే... ఆ తర్వాత కుమారుడు సైకోగా మారి హత్యలు చేస్తే అనేది కథ. 

జస్ట్ సైకో కిల్లర్ పాయింట్‌తో దర్శకుడు ఆగలేదు. హారర్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ యాడ్ చేశాడు. ఆత్మలను తీసుకొచ్చాడు. కథగా చూస్తే... 'ఐరావతం'లో కాన్సెప్ట్ బావుంది. కానీ, తెరపైకి తీసుకు రావడంలో ఫెయిల్ అయ్యాడు. పతాక సన్నివేశాల్లో వచ్చే టైటిల్ సాంగ్ మినహా ఏదీ ఆకట్టుకోదు. ప్రొడక్షన్ వేల్యూస్ సోసోగా ఉన్నాయి. కొంత మంది యాక్టింగ్ చేయలేదు. మరికొంత మంది ఓవర్ యాక్టింగ్ చేశారు. ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్స్ గురించి ఎంత తక్కువ మాట్లాడుకుంటే అంత మంచిది. 

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : సినిమాలో తన్వి నేగి డ్యూయల్ రోల్ చేశారు. కథలో ఆమెది కీలక పాత్ర. యాక్టింగ్‌లో ఆమె ఏబీసీడీ దగ్గర ఉన్నారు. స్క్రీన్ మీద బొమ్మ కనిపించినట్టు ఉంటుంది తప్ప... ఆమె బేసిక్ యాక్టింగ్ కూడా చేయలేదు. దాంతో ఏ సన్నివేశంలోనూ ఎమోషన్‌తో కనెక్ట్ కాలేం. అమర్‌దీప్ చౌదరి నటన ఓకే. ఎస్తేర్‌కు కొన్ని సినిమాల వల్ల గ్లామర్ ఇమేజ్ వచ్చింది. అయితే... అందుకు భిన్నమైన పాత్రను చేశారు. మిగతా ఆర్టిస్టుల్లో ఎవరూ చెప్పుకోదగ్గ యాక్టింగ్ చేయలేదు. ఆఖరికి సప్తగిరి కూడా నవ్వించలేకపోయారు.

ఫైనల్‌గా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : ఐరావతం అంటే ఇంద్రుడి ఏనుగు. ఈ సినిమాకు ఆ టైటిల్ ఎందుకు పెట్టారో అర్థం కాదు. సినిమా చూసిన తర్వాత అసలు ఇందులో ఏముందో అర్థం కాదు. ఎంటర్‌టైన్‌మెంట్ లేదంటే థ్రిల్ కోసం ఎవరైనా సినిమాలు చూస్తారు. ఈ సినిమాలో థ్రిల్స్ లేవు. కానీ, చూసిన వాళ్ళకు టార్చర్ ఉంటుంది. స్కిప్ కొట్టేయడం బెటర్. ఇందులో మిస్టరీ లేదు, థ్రిల్లు లేదు.

 ఐరావతం ఓ మంచి ఎంగేజింగ్ థ్రిల్లర్..!!!

నూజివీడు టాకీస్ బ్యానర్ పై నిర్మించిన ఐరవతం సినిమా ప్రేక్షకుల ముందు కి వచ్చింది థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ తో వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమా  ఎలా వుందో ఇప్పుడు చూద్దాం 

కథ: శ్లోక (తన్వీ నేగి) ఓ బ్యూటీషియన్. ఆమెకు చిక్కు (అమర్ దీప్ చౌదరి) బాయ్ ఫ్రెండ్. శ్లోకకి పుట్టినరోజు కానుకగా ఓ వైట్ కెమెరాను బహుమతిగా ఇస్తాడు.  ఆ కెమెరా ప్రత్యేకత ఏమిటి అంటే... శ్లోక తన వీడియో తీసుకుంటే... తనను పోలిన మరో అమ్మాయి ప్రిన్సీ అనే అమ్మాయి వీడియో ప్లే అవుతుంది. ఇలా ప్లే అయిన ప్రతి సారి ఒక ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ క్రైం థ్రిల్లర్ స్టోరీ ప్లే అవుతుంది. ఇంతకీ ఆ కెమెరా కి కధ కి ఏంటి సంబంధం

 శ్లోక, ప్రిన్సీ ల స్టోరీ ఏంటి ? ఇవ్వని తెలియాలి అంటే సినిమా చూడాలి 

కథ.. కథనం విశ్లేషణ: సస్పెన్స్ క్రైం థ్రిల్లర్ మూవీస్ ని ఆడియన్స్ బాగా ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తారనడంలో సందేహం లేదు. ఇది న్యూ ఎజ్ థ్రిల్లర్.  కానీ ఐరావతం సినిమాని మాత్రం ప్రేక్షకులు తెగ ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తారు. ఎందుకంటే సినీమా మొదలైనప్పటి నుంచి చివరి క్షణం వరకూ సస్పెన్స్ ట్విస్టులతో అలరిస్తుంది. ఓ వైపు స్టోరీ నెరేషన్ సగటు ప్రేక్షకుడికి కొంత కన్ఫ్యూషన్ కలిగించినా.. చివరకు క్లైమాక్స్ లో ఓ క్లారిటీ వస్తుంది. అక్రమ సంబంధాలతో నిర్లక్ష్యానికి గురైన ఓ అబ్బాయి... చివరకు ఎలా మారాడు అనేది చూపించి మెసేజ్ కూడా ఇచ్చాడు. తాను బాగా ఇష్టపడే అమ్మాయి ఇతరులతో చనువుగా వుండటం భరించలేక... ఎలా హంతకునిగా మారినాడు అనేది ఎంతో థ్రిల్లింగ్ గా చూపించాడు దర్శకుడు. ఐరావతం ఓ మంచి ఎంగేజింగ్ థ్రిల్లర్. ఇలాంటి జోనర్స్ ఇష్టపడే వారు ఈ సినిమాని బాగా ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తారు. ఈ వీకెండ్ లో డిఫరెంట్ మూవీస్ ఇష్టపడే వారికి ఐరావతం మూవీ ఓ మంచి చాయిస్.

హీరో పాత్ర పోషించిన అమర్ దీప్ చౌదరి ఇప్పటికే సీరియల్స్ లో మంచి క్రేజ్ ని సంపాదించుకున్నాడు. సోషల్ మీడియాలో కూడా మంచి ఫాలోయంగ్ వుంది. అందుకే ఈ సినిమాని మాంచి ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ ప్రమోషన్స్ అండ్ కంటెంట్ తో పబ్లిసటీ పీక్స్ కి తీసుకెళ్లారు. చిక్కు పాత్రలో పక్కింటి అబ్బాయిలా నటించి మెప్పించాడు. హీరోయిన్ ద్విపాత్రాభినయంలో బాగా గుర్తుండి పోయే పాత్రను పోషించింది. ఓ వైపు బ్యుటీషియన్ గా... మరోవైపు మోడల్ గా మోడ్రన్ పాత్రను పోషించి మంచి మార్కులే కొట్టేసింది. సైకో కిల్లర్ పాత్రలో సన్నీగా నటించిన అరుణ్ జాను నటన బాగుంది  అతనికి జోడీగా నటించిన ఎస్తర్ మాయగా మరోవైపు వేద పాత్రలో చాలా డీసెంట్ పాత్ర పోషించి ఆకట్టుకుంది. చివర్లో చర్చి ఫాదర్ క్యారెక్టర్ లో సప్తగిరి కనిపించి ప్రేక్షకులను కాసేపు నవ్వించారు. మిగతా పాత్రన్నీ తమ తమ పరిధిలో నటించి తమ పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు.

డైరెక్టర్ సుహాస్ ఎంచుకున్న కథ, కథనాలు మంచి డ్రైవింగ్ పాయింట్స్. ఆద్యంతం ట్విస్టులతో స్క్రీన్ ప్లేని నడిపిన తీరు ఉత్కంఠను రేపుతుంది. చివరి వరకు సస్పెన్స్ ని కొనసాగించిన తీరు ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. పెద్దగా ప్యాడింగ్ కి ప్రాధాన్యత ఇవ్వకపోయినా.. కథ కథనాలను నమ్ముకుని ఎక్కడా బోరింగ్ అనిపించకుండా సినిమాని తెరకెక్కించి సక్సెస్ అయ్యారు. సత్య కశ్యప్ అందించిన రెండు పాటలు బాగున్నాయి. కార్తీక్ కడగండ్ల అందించిన బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ ఓ థ్రిల్లర్ మూవీకి ఎలా వుండాలో అలానే ఉంది. ఆడియన్స్ ను విపరీతంగా ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. ఆర్.కె.వల్లెపు సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ రిచ్ గా వుంది. ఆర్టిస్టుల ను చాలా అందగా చూపించారు. విజువల్స్ బాగున్నాయి. ఎడిటింగ్ క్రిస్పీగా వుంది. ఎడిటర్ సురేష్ దుర్గం సీన్స్ ని... ఏర్చి కూర్చడంలో తన ప్రతిభను చూపించాడు. నిర్మాతలు రాంకీ పలగని, లలిత కుమారి, బాలయ్య చౌదరి సినిమాను మంచి అత్యుత్తమ నిర్మాణ విలువలతో నిర్మించారు. ఖర్చుకి ఎక్కడా వెనుకాడలేదు. గో అండ్ వాచ్ ఇట్..!!!

Kalki 2898 AD movie review: Prabhas overshadowed by towering Amitabh Bachchan in Nag Ashwin’s ambitious, star-studded spectacle

Kalki 2898 ad movie review: kalki may have prabhas as the headliner, but it is amitabh bachchan all the way -- his ashwatthama is suitably gravelly and towers over the film. kamal haasan comes on sparingly but does leave an impact..

A couple of things wrestled for front-of-cortex space while I was watching ‘Kalki 2898 AD’: this Telugu language sci-fi film, set in, what else, 2898 AD, is the first comprehensive pan-Indian film. The trend which has been gathering force in the last few years has resulted in a cast which is drawn, literally, from all the major filmmaking centres in India, straddling Bengal and Kerala, and everything in between.

And the other was just how hard it is for Indian tent poles to have a screenplay which is tight and gripping all the way through. I can’t remember a recent film of this staggering size and scale, mounted with such ambition, being such a plod to begin with.

Pre-interval, Kalki , which happily borrows its aesthetics from all kinds of futuristic films (with flashes of Mad Max, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Lord of The Rings, and even, yes, a glimpse of the godawful Adipurush, and, of course, the Bahubali-RRR slate, showing major indebtedness to the Amar Chitra Katha universe) meanders, stops and starts, remembers that it needs to bung in a set piece here and a set piece there, and then slumps back again. Oh, and how did I forget Bladerunner, and Dune in terms of influences? The latter is an ‘inspiration’ for the film’s posters, in both image and font. Hard to believe? Check it out for yourself.

The second half, which is clearly reserved for the big-hero-villain-confrontations, shakes things up somewhat, and saves the film from being a total snoozefest. And it redeems itself, just in the nick of time, by a rousing climax, where everyone comes out, literally, all guns blazing.

As it goes about setting the scene, doing the world-building thing, introducing us to its myriad characters, it is a hard sell. Yes, there’s Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama, the mighty saviour, who has survived several ‘sadis’, from the age of the Mahabharat to ‘kaliyuga’, and the time that it is set in, where the last avatar of Vishnu is meant to appear to save the world. Talk to the hand, and also, read the Puranas, where this is a much-beloved prophecy. Of course, it is a Hindu rashtra (but then the film does say that it is inspired by the Hindu scriptures), and set in Kashi, ‘where Ma Ganga has dried up washing away our sins’, as a character puts it, so maybe that’s why there’s so much Hindu iconography, just like in the Baahubali-RRR films. But those were period films. Is this what the future holds? Ooh.

And yes, there’s Kamal Hassan as the evil Supreme Yaskin, who lords over the ‘Complex’, a utopian city which hovers over Kashi, the only liveable city left in a world gone desiccated and dry. His entourage includes Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee, trying hard to muster up adequate menace, and managing to hit the mark once or twice), and a curly-haired soothsayer (Anil George) who talks darkly about divine intervention and ancient weapons (behold the ‘Gandeeva dhanush ’) being supercharged again.

And, of course, there’s Prabhas, as bounty hunter Bhairava, who is meant to be headlining this movie, but is to be found clowning around much more than flexing his muscles. He makes us wait, and wait, and wait, to actually hit his stride, in which he finally turns business-like, smiting the ungodly hip and thigh. Sigh.

There’s Deepika Padukone as the lab-lady SUM-80 or Sumati, in whose ‘kokh’ nestles the The One, waiting to come out and take charge. Outfitted in a very chic shaggy haircut, and a toga-like thing, she is referred to as Ma. There’s Disha Patani, who shows up to do god only knows what, and then disappears, and we forget about her even when she is on screen. There’s Shobhana as the Senior Mother, who presides over a Utopian land across the high mountains called Shambhala, where green leaves still grow. This is where the resistance to the all-powerful Supreme hides out, and this is where all roads lead to, when a rescue posse, accompanied by the spirited Kyra (Anna Ben, who lifts things up nicely even if briefly), who along with her compatriots (Pasupathy and Pasha) shows up just at the right time.

The thing is, a film of this order of magnitude, will be a sprawl. It will have a whole array of characters. That’s a given. It also has an entire phalanx of celebrity cameos which makes for several fan moments, and not much else. The challenge is to keep everything up and running, while keeping us suitably engaged. ‘Kalki’ manages to do this only post-interval, after getting us all bored and impatient in the first. The worst part are the laugh tracks– large tracts of which are given to Prabhas to shoulder– which just don’t land. I can’t say if it’s the same in the Telugu or Tamil versions, but in the Hindi version that I watched, most of the attempted humour comes off unfunny, and slows the film down. The only exception is a robot called Bujji (voiced by Keerthy Suresh), fashioned as Bhairava’s cutesy, smart-mouthed side-kick, who induces a smile.

And yes, this may have Prabhas as the headliner, but it is Amitabh Bachchan all the way: his Ashwatthama is suitably gravelly and epic-like, as he sets about roundly bashing and punching poor Bhairava, in one of the best set-pieces in the film. He towers over the film, both literally and metaphorically, reminding you of the Bachchan of yore, who ‘made the line begin where he stood’. As to Kamal Haasan , he comes on sparingly, and saves his best for the last, but being Kamal Haasan, does leave an impact.

So who’s up for the next instalment? The question is: will it waste less of our time, and commit more to its undeniable comic-book appeal?

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ Review: Lavish Tollywood Sci-Fi Epic Is an Unabashedly Derivative Spectacle

With “ Kalki 2898 AD ,” Telugu cinema filmmaker Nag Ashwin rifles through a century of sci-fi and fantasy extravaganzas to create a wildly uneven mashup of everything from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” to Marvel Comics movies, underpinned by elements from the Hindu epic poem “Mahabharata.” It’s billed, perhaps optimistically, as the first chapter of the Kalki Cinematic Universe franchise — which makes it part of a larger trend, since it launches the same weekend that Kevin Costner’s multi-film “Horizon” saga does in the U.S.

Bhairava (Telugu superstar Prabhas ), a roguish bounty hunter who rolls in a tricked-out faux Batmobile equipped with a robotic co-pilot, yearns to earn enough “credits” to buy his way into the Complex, where he can crash the best parties, ride horses through open fields and avoid all the debt collectors hounding him in Kasi. He seizes on the opportunity to make his dreams come true when a colossal reward is posted for the capture of SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), an escapee from the Complex’s Project K lab, where pregnant women are routinely incinerated after being drained of fluids that can ensure Yaskin’s longevity.

While on the run through a desert wasteland, en route to the rebel enclave known as Shambala, SUM-80 is renamed Sumati by newfound allies and, more important, protected by the now-ancient Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), who has evolved into an 8-foot-tall sage with superhuman strength, kinda-sorta like Obi-Wan Kenobi on steroids, and a sharp eye for any woman who might qualify as the Mother, the long-prophesized parent of — yes, you guessed it — Kalki.

Bhairava and his droid sidekick Bujji (voiced by Shambala Keerthy Suresh) follow in hot pursuit, and are in turn pursued by an army of storm troopers led by Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee), a cherubic-faced Yaskin factotum who always seems to be trying a shade too hard to exude intimidating, butch-level authority. Ashwatthama swats away the storm troopers and their flying vehicles like so many bothersome flies, and exerts only slightly more effort by warding off Bhairava and his high-tech weaponry. (Shoes that enable you to fly do qualify as weaponry, right?)

For his own part, Bhairava has a few magical powers of his own, though it’s never entirely clear what he can or cannot do with them. After a while, it’s tempting to simply assume that, in any given scene, the bounty hunter can do whatever the script requires him to do.

But never mind: He and Ashwatthama do their respective things excitingly well during the marathon of mortal combat that ensues when just about everybody (including Manas and his heavily armed goons) get ready to rumble in Shambala for the climactic clash.

All of which may make “Kalki 2898 AD” sound a great deal more coherent than it actually is. Truth to tell, this is a movie that can easily lead you at some point to just throw up your hands and go with the flow. Or enjoy the rollercoaster ride. And if this really is, as reported, the most expensive motion picture ever produced in India, at least it looks like every penny and more is right there up on the screen.
