EVERY GOOD STORY BEGINS SOMEWHERE

A fun and informative creative writing course suited to people interested in writing but unsure how to get started. In a relaxed and encouraging environment, you’ll talk, workshop and complete exercises with like-minded people, gaining the confidence and ability to express yourself through words. This course has a focus on generic writing skills without focusing on any one particular genre. Those skills can then be applied to a range of styles, from poetry and short stories to personal narratives, while having lots of fun along the way.

During the course you will cover the following topics; and more:

• Finding Inspiration
• Character voice, creation and development
• Settings, description, atmosphere and mood.
• Plotting and structure.
• Dialogue, point of view
• Rewriting and editing
• Recognizing and avoiding clichés
• Showing not telling

Each class includes workshopping, exercises and homework, aimed at developing each student’s individual writing style.

What should I bring?

Please bring a pen and paper to each session for taking notes and completing writing exercises.

Who is this course for?

This course is perfect for anyone wishing to explore creative writing but are unsure where to start. The course does not focus on any one particular genre or style allowing you the freedom to guide your writing into an area that interests you.

Megan Waters has been teaching at the CAE for close to 20 years. Her passion for writing has been life-long, ever since she wrote her first published story at age 10. She loves sharing her experience with new and advanced writers, both in creative ways, and in non-fiction, and hearing the diverse stories of Melbourne’s inhabitants.

What is this subject about?

Do you love words, stories and poems? Do you love reading fiction, autobiography, poetry and newspapers?

In Creative writing you will be studying and writing different forms of poetry, short stories and non-fiction.  You will have a chance to write and workshop your own creative ideas writing with classmates and receive important feedback on developing and extending your writing skills.  There will be a number of writers studied throughout the course for both their writing styles and their ideas. What are we going to be doing?

* We will write poetry, stories and non- fiction * We will workshop different exciting texts * We will study a range of authors, poets and playwrights * We will learn to develop our writing as a craft through the drafting process * We will review our favourite authors * We will create our own texts

Scribes Writers is a small group based in Geelong. We are a group of writers with varying experience who share a common love of words and the joy of the creative writing process. We meet to broaden our knowledge, help each other in creative problem solving, engage in constructive critiquing across all genres and use our meetings to encourage each other and improve our skills.

Scribes Writers meets weekly on Monday mornings between 9.30 and 12pm, at the South Barwon Community Centre , 33 Mt Pleasant Road Belmont.

Writers Victoria runs a year-round program of writing courses, workshops and literary events. These writing courses take place in Melbourne, regional Victoria and online.

Our workshop program is developed in response to the needs and aspirations of our members, participants and community. The workshop program includes a range of different courses offered at many different prices. We run entry-level seminars and one-day workshops as well as longer courses and online clinics. Our courses aim to support writers at all stages of their careers, in all genres and in all parts of the state.

Stanford Continuing Studies' online creative writing courses make it easy to take courses taught by instructors from Stanford’s writing community. Thanks to the flexibility of the online format, these courses can be taken anywhere, anytime—a plus for students who lead busy lives or for whom regular travel to the Stanford campus is not possible. These courses are open to all adults, and we encourage all levels of writers to enroll.

Creative writing is a crucial skill that increases critical thinking and empathy. With creative writing classes for primary and high school-aged kids, your child can hone this skill! Your young people will learn how to nurture their ideas and gain the skills to turn them into great stories. From how to form characters, to descriptive language and world-building—your child will learn it all.

Catherine Pelosi

Facilitator – grades 4-6.

Catherine is the Sydney-based author of middle-grade novel, Quark’s Academy and picture book, Something for Fleur. Both books are being released in Turkey and are available online in the USA and Canada. Both books were selected for 2019 NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge. Quark’s Academy was also one of the few selected texts for the CBCA Readers Cup for 2019 and shortlisted for the 2019 Western Australian Young Reader’s Book Award.

She adores teaching writing to young people and is available for school visits. Catherine has been a speaker at several events including the Sharjah Children’s Festival – twice, CBCA events, as well as writing festivals including Writers, Unleashed. Children’s books, in Catherine’s opinion, are the best. They are the ones that shape us, give us hope, help us find our place in the world…and, take us away to wonderful places. They can also be read by everyone, which she loves.

Using a mix of video and written content , this online course will guide young writers through the fundamental techniques of writing. HOW DOES YOUR QUEST WORK?

The Creative Writing Quest consists of 12 online modules which your child logs in and completes at their own pace (we recommend one a week, but it's up to you – you have a full year to complete them all). As well as a video from Allison , each module will include practical exercises and a story challenge, with a larger story challenge at the end. The course is hosted in an enclosed online learning space , with no interaction from strangers, so it's completely safe – and lots of fun!

What young writers will learn in this course

This Creative Writing Quest guides young writers through the basics of creative writing to end up with a polished story of around 800 words. Along the way, they’ll learn the processes that go into creating a story and complete a series of creative challenges that will build their knowledge of story craft.

The course is split into 12 modules – each a step towards expanding their knowledge of creative writing and also to writing one full story. When one module is completed, the next unlocks, with each designed to teach young writers about writing and inspire them to write.

Young writers will discover:

• how to find an idea for a story
• writing prompts that they can use all the time
• creative challenges to keep them inspired and motivated
• the essential ingredients for any story
• how to create a great character , including checklists
• how to build a world for their story
• the story formula (which can be applied to any type of story)
• the basics of story structure

• writing techniques such as sub-plots, outlining and dialogue
• the basics of editing a story

Simply completing the adventure is an amazing achievement – and the glowing treasure at the end of the quest is a lifelong love of writing!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My child is 8 but loves to write. Can he/she do the course? Absolutely. We’ve given 9-14 as a fairly wide range, but if you think your child is at this level, then go for it.

Will there be homework? At the end of each module, Allison gives participants a story challenge – to help them flex their newfound skills. These are helpful exercises which will make learning faster and more fun. The course also offers a series of OPTIONAL EXERCISES for those children who require additional creative stimulation. Children do not receive feedback on the story challenges and exercises – but if they complete them, they'll be building their skills to help them with their final story that they submit at the end for Allison's feedback.

When will my child receive feedback on their writing? At the end of the course, your child can submit an 800-word story and Allison Tait will provide them with personalised feedback – via a special video message, just for them!

Why can't Allison provide feedback after every module? Due to the numbers participating and the self-paced nature of the course, this is not possible. However, the course has been designed so that Allison provides personalised feedback on the completed story at the end – and that's pretty cool!

How much time should I set aside for my child to complete each module? Most tasks can be completed in 30 minutes or less. Of course, your child may take more or less time depending on their level of enthusiasm – one thing we know about young writers is that once they start, it can be difficult to stop them.

I’m worried about my child interacting online. In each module, children watch a video and read materials from course creator Allison Tait. Only AWC team members and Allison Tait can access the course and all have undergone “Working with Children” checks. There is no interaction with anyone outside the course or other children.

Does my child receive their own login details? No. You need to login using the email address provided when enrolling. You're responsible for when your child has access to the course.

Does my child need to log in at a set time each week? Not at all. We all lead busy lives, so you can complete the course at your own pace. While we recommend completing a new module each week, you could instead choose to knock all 12 over on a rainy weekend! Alternatively, space them out longer – as you actually have a FULL 12 MONTHS access, so there's no pressure whatsoever.

Are there further courses my child can do? We also have a  Teenage Creative Writers’ Program designed for high school students who want to improve their short story skills. It's the perfect course to continue with after Creative Writing Quest for Kids.

Creative Writing Degrees  Degrees Also known as an undergraduate or bachelors degree. Internationally respected, universally understood. An essential requirement for many high-level jobs. Gain a thorough understanding of your subject – and the tools to investigate, think critically, form reasoned arguments, solve problems and communicate effectively in new contexts. Progress to higher level study, such as a postgraduate diploma or masters degree.

List of All U.S. Colleges with a Creative Writing Major

Writing has been my passion practically since I learned to read in kindergarten. I would write stories about princesses and my family dog, Gansett. When it came time to look at colleges, I was set on attending one with a strong creative writing program. Ultimately, I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in Writing Seminars.

Today, colleges across the country offer creative writing as a major. Because writing skills are essential for a wide range of careers, and because most curricula emphasize broad liberal arts competencies, a degree in creative writing can set you up for success in numerous fields, whether you want to be an editor or a lawyer.

Overview of the Creative Writing Major

Creative writing is about more than spinning tales. For your major, you’ll generally need to pursue a curriculum grounded in literature, history, foreign language, and other humanities courses, along with distribution courses, if the college requires them.

Most creative writing majors must participate in workshops, in which students present their work and listen to peer critiques, usually with a certain number of advanced courses in the mix. In some cases, colleges will ask you to specialize in a particular genre, such as fiction, poetry, or playwriting. 

To succeed in creative writing, you’ll need to have a tough spine, in order to open yourself up to feedback from your classmates and instructors. You may need to give readings in public — if not as an undergraduate, certainly during your career. Of course, a passion for creating is essential, too, as is a willingness to revise your work and learn from the greats and your peers.

A creative writing major opens up doors to many careers, including journalism, content marketing, copywriting, teaching, and others. Even careers that don’t center around writing often have a strong writing component: you’ll need to write reports, deliver presentations, and so on.

Some writers go on to earn an MFA, which will help you hone your craft. It’s also often a prerequisite for teaching creative writing at the college level.

What to Look for in a College as a Creative Writing Major

Many world-renowned authors have another claim to fame: professorships. Writers who have taught their craft include (among many others):

• Colson Whitehead (many colleges, including Vassar College and Columbia University)
• Stephen Dixon (Johns Hopkins University)
• Viet Thanh Nguyen (University of Southern California)
• Eula Biss (Northwestern University)
• Toni Morrison (Princeton University)

Be aware that as an undergraduate, you may not be able to learn from the greats. That’s why it’s important to look into which courses these faculty teach before you have dreams of being mentored by Salman Rushdie — who is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at NYU.

Genres Offered

While many schools that have creative writing majors offer fiction and poetry courses and tracks, there are some niche genres that could be more difficult to find. If you’re interested in playwriting, for example, you won’t find that at every school. Before you decide on a program, be sure it includes the genres you’d like to explore further, whether that’s flash fiction, creative nonfiction, or something else.

Workshopping Opportunities

The core of most quality creative writing curriculum is workshopping. This means sharing your work in your classes and listening to your peers discuss and critique it. While this may sound intimidating, it can do a lot to help you hone your work and become a better writer. Look for colleges that make this the bedrock of their curriculum.

Showcasing Opportunities

Are there opportunities to present your work, such as college-sponsored readings where undergraduates can participate? Or, perhaps the school has a great literary journal. At my school, students could submit their plays and have them performed by fellow students.

What Are Your Chances of Acceptance?

No matter what major you’re considering, the first step is ensuring you’re academically comparable to students who were previously accepted to the college or university. Most selective schools use the Academic Index to filter out applicants who aren’t up to their standards.

You’ll also want to demonstrate your fit with the school and specific major with the qualitative components of your application, like your extracurriculars and essays. For a prospective creative writing major, the essay is particularly important because this is a way to demonstrate your writing prowess. Activities might include editing your school’s newspaper or literary journal, publishing your work, and participating in pre-college writing workshops.

Annual Events

The department hosts several annual events including an ambitious Spring Literary Festival that brings five nationally distinguished writers to campus for three-days of readings, craft talks, and student discussion. Recent visitors have included Tony Hoagland, Kathryn Harrison, Barry Lopez, Francine Prose, Peter Ho Davies, Kim Addonizio, David Shields, Robert Hass, Charles Simic, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Marilynne Robinson.

Visiting writers engage with our program year-round as well, appearing in both undergraduate and graduate classes, meeting one-on-one with select students, and offering evening readings in the intimate Galbreath Chapel.

Creative Writing Circle

The Creative Writing Circle is a student-run group that meets once a week. During Creative Writing Circle meetings, students come together to write creatively and to share their works in progress for feedback. All student writers are welcome to participate! Genres explored include (but are not limited to!) fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.

Meetings are 4 - 5:30 p.m. every Friday, on the second floor of the Library. Feel free to come by!

Our first meeting will be at 4 p.m. on August 30.

Writing (Bachelor of Creative Arts)

Gain expertise, practical experience, and develop creative skills in writing. The emphasis in this major is on publication or the achievement of professional standards in writing. After undertaking introductory units on writing fundamentals, you will progress to specific forms and genres in writing (including fiction, creative nonfiction, scriptwriting, life writing, and writing for games). The major concludes with a unit in which you can develop a writing project of a commercially viable length.
