Rothschild online application

You can search for all of the vacancies at Rothschild & Co, and submit an online application, via its careers website . The application consists of your CV and a cover letter, which should highlight your relevant skills and experience. For the graduate scheme, the minimum academic requirement is 340 UCAS points or a 2:1 degree equivalent.

Rothschild & Co lists the following as key qualities it seeks in a candidate:

It is a good idea to cover as many of these key points as possible in your application, to make it immediately clear to the hiring manager that you understand the expectations of the company and that you are what they are looking for.

The ideal application will be short, clear, and concise. Use bullet points to keep it simple and aim to have your CV fit on one page (two is the maximum permitted). Remember to push your achievements and explain any career/academic gaps.

If your online application is successful, you will be contacted by someone from HR and asked to do a telephone interview. This will be a mix of personal and technical questions to assess your compatibility with the role and the company.

You should familiarise yourself with Rothschild & Co’s history, recent business transactions, and core values, to show why you want to work for them and they might want to work with you.

Rothschild Aptitude Tests

Rothschild numerical reasoning tests.

Rothschild & Co puts strong numeracy skills as one of its core requirements for employees, which should come as no surprise in the finance industry.

Numerical reasoning tests differ from standard maths tests because they assess your ability to analyse and interpret numerical data. This type of online psychometric test is usually presented in a way which is similar to the actual work you will be doing, so that your employer can get a sense of how you will perform in the role.

Rothschild & Co uses SHL numerical reasoning tests , which are tailored to Rothschild’s specifications and tend to be 20 to 25 minutes long. They focus on statistical, graphical, and financial data interpretation , testing the key workplace skills that Rothschild & Co looks for.

It is important to practice numerical reasoning tests before you take your real assessment, so that you can work on your skills and improve your score as much as possible. The aptitude tests are often used as a determiner between stages or similar candidates, so your chances of advancing in the process is often reliant on how well you do here.

Rothschild mechanical reasoning tests

Depending on the position you apply for, you may be asked to complete a mechanical reasoning test . These assess your ability to put theoretical mechanical principles into practice and show your level of technical knowledge .

Typically, these tests are presented as a series of images depicting a mechanical scenario or problem and ask you to find the right solution. They are tailored to the position and level of skill expected from the job, so make sure that you are very familiar with the job specifications and required skills.

You can and should practice mechanical reasoning tests to become familiar with their structure and the type of questions asked. Rothschild & Co use mechanical reasoning tests from SHL , which produces specialised tests based on the company’s requirements.

Successful candidates may be invited to Rothschild & Co to participate in an assessment day at an assessment center near them.

For the assessment center you may be invited to participate in a number of group activities including:

Final interviews

Eight deadly sins to avoid when creating a banking cover letter

Cover letters need to do three things: prove you can do the job, differentiate you from other candidates and not attach a red flag to your application. Sadly, the third component is just as critical as the first two.

When it comes to cover letters, there are catastrophic errors, like the student who spent his few paragraphs quantifying his ability to bench press while applying to the wrong firm, and then there are your smaller mistakes, which won’t embarrass you publicly but will still not earn you an interview. These are the ones we’ve detailed below. Avoid them and you’ve bettered your chances.

1. It’s too long

Length is the first thing recruiters and hiring managers mention when it comes to cover letter errors. Decision-makers don’t have the time or patience to read a novel.

One hiring manager at Barclays said that he spends between 15 and 30 seconds reviewing a cover letter, and will completely ignore those that look are too long. Mostly, he spends the time scanning for obvious errors that help him shorten his stack of applicants.

A good cover letter should be made up of three fairly short paragraphs containing between 300 and 500 words, according to experts we talked to.

2. It’s littered with typos

It's doubtful that the position to which you’re applying will place an emphasis on optimal sentence structure and superior grammar, but avoiding typos and mistakes are something on which every recruiter and hiring manager focuses.

“If your cover letter has mistakes, then it shows that you may not care how you present yourself and therefore may not care how you present yourself when representing the investment bank, PE firm, hedge fund, family office or insurance company either,” said Alyssa Gelbard, the founder and president of Resume Strategists.

3. You’re too egotistical

Conceivably the most difficult part of crafting a good cover letter is touting your own accomplishments while not appearing arrogant and narcissistic.

“Typically, it’s guys, and that is a major turn-off to investment banks,” said Heather Katsonga-Woodward, a former banker and author of To Become an Investment Banker . “Banks love themselves and people that stroke their ego by showing they have read their annual report and found out how well they are doing,” she said.

So, summarize your competencies but also direct attention to the bank and the division and explain how you’d fit in.

4. It’s too generic

A boilerplate cover letter filled with clichéd language – like “hardworking,” “self-starter” and “dedicated” – is another sure way to limit your chances of a callback.

A cover letter shouldn’t talk about you and your background – that’s what a resume is for. Rather, it should focus on why you fit the job in question, with specific examples of how you can provide unique value to the firm in question, said Jesse Marrus, founder of search firm StreetID.

Mention the company in the cover letter and include a tidbit of recent news that affects them, showing you pay attention to the market, Marrus added. Focus on results and outcomes as much as possible.

While you may have customized your letter for a particular role, it’s also important to state why you’re interested in that specific bank, PE firm or hedge fund, Gelbard said. Why that firm specifically – how do you connect with the person who’s interviewing you?

“This goes beyond saying you like their mission, philosophy, overall business or investment strategy, Gelbard said.

A cookie-cutter cover letter may cause hiring managers to assume that this job wasn’t even important enough for you to take the time to write a personalized note .

5. Not having a name

“To Whom it May Concern” and “Dear Sir or Madam” are lazy greetings, experts say.

“In this digital age, a minimal amount of research can tell you who to address your letter to – use this information and what you can gather about the resume reviewer to garner interest,” said Suzanne Havranek, senior recruiter at headhunter Wall Street Services.

6. You fail to mention a referral in the beginning of the letter

Referrals get you noticed and can help you stand out. Omitting the name of the contact who led you to the position, and whose name can be helpful and influential, can result in a lost opportunity to get your resume to the top of the pile, Gelbard said.

Plus, if your contact is in touch with the hiring manager, either at your request or on their own, you can appear ungrateful if you haven’t acknowledged their role in bringing the position to your attention or recommending you. Worse, you may blindside the hiring manager that a third party is involved, Gelbard said.

7. Your claims aren’t backed up on your resume

Few recruiters would recommend purely functional resumes, but spinning it to prominently display your skills over experience is a good tactic .

If you claim an important role in a transaction but can’t talk through the strategy or many specifics, then you will be found out in the phone screening or in-person interview , if you do eventually make it that far.

“No one cares about unverified skills,” said Katsonga-Woodward. “If you say you’re great at something, you have to identify something on your CV that validates the claim.”

There’s a delicate balance though. While you shouldn’t talk about your valuation skills if there’s nothing pertinent on your resume, you also don’t want your cover letter to be a carbon copy of your CV. Refine the information in your resume and explain how it fits their job, at their company.

It's great that you designed a new cost model for a project or structured a specific deal, but it’s important to start with relevant overall contributions and value first, Gelbard said. For example, mention that you drove market share growth], increased profitability, streamlined trading processes and spearheaded entrée into new sectors or geographies – and include figures.

“Hiring managers in most areas of financial services first want to know about your overall attention to the bottom line and relevant experience driving revenue growth, profit, risk mitigation and cost reduction,” Gelbard said. “Then they’d like to know some specifics that contribute to the value you bring to the role.”

8. You sent it via snail mail

This one is actually up for debate, so you’ll have to make your own choice, depending on the situation. Recruiters say that formal cover letters aimed at specific jobs should always be sent via email. But the Barclays banker believes a hard copy cover letter can be beneficial when it comes to networking.

He and his colleagues have mailed signed cover letters to smaller companies – newly launch hedge funds or private equity firms – to stay on their radar.

“Do some research, tell them you’re interested in what they’re doing and toss in a business card,” he said.

While a named letter is ideal, how can I be certain that it WILL be that person who I researched is the ONE handling my letter?

@tlbxxx Bentopia is correct in his assessment. Many of these characteristics lead to cover letters being passed over. I have seen it many times. Unfortunately, many people are afraid of competition. One feels that another should not be able to "pass judgment" on them, or stand on a "higher pedestal." This line of thought is dangerous in our field. People work to get where they are. Do not attack those who you don't know.

Also, "egocentrical" is not a word. Use "egocentric" or "egotistical"....not both. I would pass over your cover letter.

Dear Bentopia, what's the best way to impress a hiring manager if you're trying to take a new career path and believe you have what it takes but lack the relevant job experience? Any advice on how to get past the gates to an interview?

We recently caught up with Sophie who discusses securing her role at Rothschild & Co. Sophie divulges why she decided on a role with Rothschild & Co, how she built some commercial awareness before the interview and some top tips for fellow members to follow in her footsteps.

Why a role in Rothschild & Co?

I applied for the role of Global Advisory Summer Analyst at Rothschild & Co. There are many reasons why Rothschild & Co appealed to me, but the most important two are: the regional presence with offices in Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham, and the friendly and welcoming culture.

To begin with, I liked the fact that Rothschild & Co had regional offices as I would have been working in an office near my hometown rather than having to find accommodation in London. This really appealed to me as it took away some of the stresses involved with planning a summer internship for people, like myself, living outside of London. Additionally, I liked how this showed that Rothschild & Co valued workers in other parts of the UK. The regional offices are also much smaller teams, which means that you were able to build up a strong relationship with everyone in the office.

Perhaps more importantly is the culture at Rothschild & Co. Having already spoken to someone who had completed the summer internship the previous year, I knew that Rothschild & Co was a very friendly place to work, and that I would feel welcome. Every single colleague that I met throughout my internship was always willing to help with work, or give my advice and this made my whole experienced (from interview, all the way to the completion of the internship) thoroughly happy and enjoyable.

How did you build your commercial awareness before the interview?

I read Economics & Management which means that my degree requires a lot of outside reading about business and banking, so I spend a lot of time reading different financial/business newspapers anyway. However, before the interview I made sure to research specific Rothschild deals so that I had company specific commercial awareness.

How did Bright Network help you secure this role?

Bright Network was a very helpful resource as it allowed me to read about other people’s experiences at Rothschild & Co, and other investment banks. As well as my own research into different banks, Bright Network’s Success Stories allowed me to read about first-hand experiences. This allowed me to gain an insight into the culture at different banks, and so help me to narrow down the number of programs that I wanted to apply to.  

Furthermore, I found the CV advice extremely useful. Although I already had a CV, Bright Network’s advice helped me to make small changes to make it even better. 

What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps.

  • Before applying to a summer internship, make sure to do a lot of research into the company that you are applying to. Not only does this ensure that you want to work there, but it is useful when writing cover letters, and answering interview questions to have in-depth knowledge about the firm.  
  • Try to go to as many networking sessions as you can. Especially smaller events, such as networking brunches or dinners, as this gives you lots of opportunities to ask questions that you may not be able to find the answers to online. This adds to the personal research that you have already found with first-hand experiences and insider knowledge from people that actually work there.  
  • In an interview, take the time to think about your response before answering a tough question. You do not have to answer every question instantaneously, it is much better to think about your answer first so that your response will be sensible, concise, and easy to understand.

What has been the toughest interview question you faced?

Although this is not really a question, for my second Rothschild & Co interview, I was asked to prepare a presentation on a recent deal of my choice. I initially found this very difficult as I had never prepared something like this before, and I struggled to decide what to include and how to set out my presentation. However, I took the time to make a few PowerPoint slides, make notes on what I was going to say, and try to prepare for questions that I may be asked. It was scary presenting when I knew that the people, I was presenting to would have much more knowledge in the field than I do, but my interviewers put my mind at ease. Although I was asked challenging questions in response to the presentation, this just made the whole experience more enjoyable! It is important to remember that the interviewers are not looking to trip you up, they just want to get the very best out of you!
